Drinking Liberally — Seattle

DLBottle

Please join us tonight for an evening of politics and conversation over a pint at the Seattle Chapter of Drinking Liberally. Material for tonight’s discussions: The hurricane that is the G.O.P. convention, Rob McKenna’s refusal to release his tax returns, and, perhaps, today’s Arizona, Vermont, Alaska and Oklahoma elections ….

We meet every Tuesday at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E. Starting time is 8:00pm. Some people show up earlier for Dinner.

Can’t make it to Seattle’s DL tonight? Check out one of the other DL meetings over the next week. The Tri-Cities chapter also meets tonight. And on Monday, the Yakima, South Bellevue and Olympia chapters meet.

With 235 chapters of Living Liberally, including thirteen in Washington state four in Oregon and three more in Idaho, chances are excellent there’s a chapter near you.

    Dang.

    Obama lead declining in Iowa

“PPP’s newest Iowa poll finds Barack Obama’s lead in the state declining all the way to two points. He’s at 47% to 45% for Mitt Romney. In July we found Obama ahead 48-43 and in May it was 51-41.”

    http://www.publicpolicypolling.....-iowa.html

Down from 8 to 2 in two months. Evidence of a Ryan bump. Proximity to WI. Obama approval significantly under water.

    Don’t miss the last sentences:

There’s not much doubt at this point- Iowa’s a swing state and the landscape there looks a whole lot more like 2000 or 2004 than it does 2008. Obama’s unpopularity gives the GOP a great chance at reclaiming the state.

    That’s from a left-leaning pollster.

@11 Not anymore. They’re kicking the Paulistas to the curb! First day of the convention and the GOP is already tearing itself apart! har har har!!!

At one point, delegates from Maine walked off the convention floor in protest of a Republican National Committee decision to replace 10 of the 20 delegates Paul had secured in the state. That move prevented Maine from submitting Paul’s name for nomination. … Bronza said the treatment from national Republicans toward Paul supporters had him seriously weighing whether he would vote for Mitt Romney in November.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Looks like the GOP’s new leaders can’t stand criticism or competition.

    Big tent my ass.

When their candidate received any delegates in the state-by-state roll call, Paul’s supporters delivered loud cheers. However, convention organizers ultimately made a decision to stop calling out the Paul delegates.

That decision was met with furious cries from Paul’s supporters, who said their voices weren’t being heard at the Republican Party’s official gathering. When states listed delegate votes for both Romney and Paul, party officials at the podium listed only the votes assigned to Romney, who secured enough delegates Tuesday to officially clinch the GOP nomination.

At one point, delegates from Maine walked off the convention floor in protest of a Republican National Committee decision to replace 10 of the 20 delegates Paul had secured in the state. That move prevented Maine from submitting Paul’s name for nomination.

Fliers passed out by conservative activists in Florida:

“Over the past year Voter Fraud has become an important issue in Florida. Governor Rick Scott has spearheaded the issue by creating new Voter ID laws to curb illegal voting. But the fear remains that it may be too little too late. Florida gun owners are uniting to bring a new law to the table called Protect the Polls. The logic behind Protect the Polls is simple. If you are a legal gun owner in the state of Florida and you suspect someone on Election Day is committing voter fraud you can shoot him or her with your licensed weapon and not be charged with a crime. Precedents have already been set allowing these rights, like the important Stand Your Ground law, and in this case, there is more at stake than just one person’s life; this is for the life of this great country.”

Hey, RR, this is good stuff.

Why is NJ’s unemployment rate higher?

Maybe it’s because more of their citizens are actually still out there trying to find jobs:

For starters, the state has a higher labor force participation rate than the rest of the United States. About 66 percent of Garden State residents are part of the workforce, compared to 63.7 percent nationwide. A similar labor force participation rate would push unemployment across the country to about 8.8 percent.

    Read more at http://www.thefiscaltimes.com/.....FYqIymU.99

What do you think Obama’s chances would be if the US unemployment rate was at 8.8%, RR?

Would you still be as much of a jerk about NJ’s problems?

I tried to listen to NPR live broadcast of the convention on my way to my business dinner last night. Getting stuck in lots of detours and one-lane traffic between Mercer and Denny gave me lots of time to do so.

So I listened to one speaker (name unkown) compare Obama to Mao, saying that Obama lifted his re-election slogan from Mao. I turned it off, I couldn’t take any more of that sort of garbage. I turned it back on, only to hear another speaker saying that liberals were like bad dogs, sometimes you have to beat them.

That pretty much did it for me listening to the convention speeches. I plugged in a classic rock CD for the next half-hour.

So while the Republicans were trying to convince viewers that the Democrates were the party of hate and division, and the Republicans were the party of God, hope, and diversity, Rush Limbaugh was editorializing on the hurricane making landfall in along the Lousianna coast.

Look folks, I can’t make this stuff up, so I will have to quote it….

“It’s the Democrats’ wet dream that [Isaac] hit New Orleans…The Republicans ought to…send bags of money instead of sand. Bags full of money to shore up the levees of New Orleans…The poor of New Orleans will storm the levees and steal the bags, thereby putting themselves at risk for the eventual flooding that will happen once they remove the bags of money. And that way the Republicans can get rid of even more Democrats in Louisiana and shore up the state for themselves.”

An unemployed bitter whitey atheist labels Jesus Christ a “white persons” God?? Good luck with that. I have attended many black churches in my life. We worship the same God. You speak from pure ignorance and bitterness. You are precisely where you deserve to be you racist bastard. You think any black person who worships Jesus Christ is a fool just because you are trapped in your own bitterness about getting screwed in this life. Your perspective is narrow and short-term. It’s also arrogant and ignorant.
you deserve your station in life.

I looked back and saw where deathfrogg poured his heart out about being treated unfairly. He is quite bitter. Hopefully he can rid himself of that baggage and move forward. Sounds like deathfrogg believes he was created randomly, has no soul and a short hopeless life. I suspect that is precisely what he is going to get unless he changes his belief system
    Sucks to be deathfrogg.

    Bank Regulation, Rmoney-Style

“Romney may give the financial industry … a revamped Dodd-Frank that would accommodate … the most profitable and riskiest activities while preserving a patina of protection for investors and consumers. …

“‘There’s this perception that banks hate everything in Dodd-Frank, and that’s just not true,’ said Mark Calabria, a former top Republican aide on the Senate Banking Committee. ‘From a bank’s perspective, you’d rather have … control over the process.'”

    http://www.businessweek.com/ne.....=bloomberg

Roger Rabbit Commentary: I suspect there’ll be something in R-Money’s regulation reforms that says if a crooked banker steals your home you can’t sue. To Republicans, “reform” always means taking away your right to sue people who hurt you (physically or financially).

This is just horrifying. Watch the video.

Child was bullied by students, teacher, say Kopachuck parents
The video footage is six months old, captured from multiple angles by teens with mobile phones in a Kopachuck Middle School classroom. In the images, more than a dozen students drag a smaller boy around the room, holding him like a hammock, peeling off his socks, writing on his feet, stuffing a sock in his mouth, holding a pillow over his face and covering him with chairs.

    Read more here: http://www.thenewstribune.com/.....rylink=cpy

The teacher who helped make this happen has been transfered to a job at the district office, not fired. Reading through the comments at the article there’s statements from his former students saying this was right in line with how this guy acts.

    Unreal.
