DLBottle
Please join us tonight for drinks, conversation, and dinner at the Seattle Chapter of Drinking liberally.

We meet at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E. Starting time is 8:00 pm, but a few folks show up earlier for dinner.

Can’t make it tonight? The Tri-Cities chapter of Drinking liberally meets every Tuesday night as well. And Drinking Liberally Tacoma meets this Thursday at the Hub Restaurant at 7:00pm.

With 232 chapters of Living Liberally, including thirteen in Washington state and six more in Oregon, chances are excellent there’s one near you.

GOP Uses Disasters To Play Politics

With Irene’s ravages still fresh in the headlines, the House GOP — arguably the most dysfunctional political clique north of the equater — has taken their next hostage: Disaster aid.

At some point, you have to let hostage-takers shoot the hostage, then face the consequences. It’s always unfortunate to lose a hostage, but if you don’t, there will be many more.

In that case, it’s too bad you’re not the hostage in this particular instance!

Somehow, the equivalent of a SWAT team comes to mind. In this case, the question is whether there’s anyone with a steady enough aim, or the guts to pull the trigger.

On the other hand, in this case that what we’re watching may actually the hostage takers shooting holes in their own feet–or some other body parts.

It’s more than just hostage-taking. It’s an attempt to bog down the funding process right when FEMA has to respond quickly to an existing disaster.

The Republicans know that the failed emergency response to Katrina was the first time a lot of Americans saw that with Bush, “the emperor wore no clothes”. Even Nancy Grace was incredulous of the Bush administration’s excuse that they had “just heard” about the conditions at the Superdome and the convention center, even though it was being reported 24 hours a day on TV. After that, the Bush administration had no credibility.

So by handicapping FEMA right when it’s needed the most, they hope they can blame the President for the inability to deliver aid to Hurricane Irene victims. The most ardent tea-party supporters also hope that they can get FEMA abolished as well, killing two birds with one stone.

    LOL…
That initiative the governor is talking up was brought to the legislature and the governor a couple of times and they failed to support it. That’s why it was an initiative, because we couldn’t get it passed as a regular bill. After it passed the governor and the state legislature tried to torpedo it a couple of times.

Wow the NY Times is having a “special moment“.

And that may be the problem with Mr. Sharpton’s cable news pulpit: what he means to say is in lockstep with every other MSNBC evening program, making the stretch between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. a nonstop lecture on liberal values and what is wrong with the Republican Party.

MSNBC long ago cast itself as the liberal counterpoint to Fox News. Its star muckraker, Keith Olbermann, left MSNBC and took his show to Current TV in June, but other progressive hosts, particularly Rachel Maddow, have continued to attract viewers — not nearly as many as routinely watch Fox News, but more than for less partisan shows on CNN. MSNBC, which found success by preaching to the converted, has now hired an actual preacher.

And in the evening at least, MSNBC is less a news provider than a carousel of liberal opinion — potential conflicts of interest are swept aside in the swirl of excitable guests.

OMG, Spud is sure in a lather this morning. Our very own Young Earth Creationist (YEC!) is trying to tar the left with STREAKERS!

Yes, get the fainting couch ready – someone dropped their pants on TV!
Perhaps that guy was a Democrat – he was dropping his pants in public, not in a bathroom stall in some airport, or in a sleazy motel, or offering to blow an undercover cop – all the while maintaining their Bible-thumping bona fides in public – like a Republican closet-case would.

Personally, I prefer a party that welcomes streakers and free-spirits over a party of twisted prudes and self-loathers any day.

And on the topic of MSNBC – all this hub-bub must mean they’re hitting a nerve – eh?

So it’s OK in a society to have a huge and profitable criminal enterprise that masquerades as a news organization while pumping shameless lies and propaganda main-line into millions of homes across the nation (ie Fox), demonstrably worsening the nation’s collective intelligence, but it’s cause for hyperventilating and condemnation to have a media outlet trying to make a profit by airing opinion and analysis in an equally partisan but arguably more fact-oriented (reality-based?) posture from the Left?

Why, Spuds? After a decade or more of Murdoch/Ailes driven lies and political hatchet-jobs and relentless disinformation in the cause of the Right (I’d argue fascism), why is it not OK for another corporation to air opinion from the Left?
    Afraid of a little competition?

Bullies usually are revealed to be the cowards they are when someone decides to fight back. Just like the right starts yelling ‘class warfare’ and getting the vapors when working people engage in the battle that has been relentlessly waged against them.

    So fuck off, Spud.

By the way… why is Puddy’s friend Bill O’Reilly trying to have the authorities investigate his wife’s boyfriend? I’ve always known O’Reilly was a bully, he exhibits that behavior on TV regularly. So I guess it’s no surprise that his wife has a boyfriend, or that O’Reilly isn’t really man enough to confront the boyfriend himself, and wants to throw his political weight around to solve his personal problems.

For several days now, various media have been reporting a story that involves the Gadhafi regime’s clandestine lobbying of the White House, NATO, and Rep. Dennis Kucinich, who criticized the administration for getting involved in NATO’s bombing of Libya without congressional authorization.

The regime invited Kucinich to Tripoli, and offered to pay all his travel expense, but Kucinich declined.

n the last three general elections – 2004, 2006, and 2008 — young voters have given the Democratic Party a majority of their votes, and for all three cycles they have been the party’s most supportive age group. This year, 66% of those under age 30 voted for Barack Obama making the disparity between young voters and other age groups larger than in any presidential election since exit polling began in 1972.
