Join us at the Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally for an evening of politics under the influence. We meet at 8:00 pm at the Montlake Ale House, 2307 24th Avenue E—some of us show up a little early to sample from the terrific menu.
For tonight’s theme song, we’ll all shuffle up to the roof, look up to the stars and hum Also sprach Zarathustra.
If you find yourself in the Tri-Cities area this evening, check out McCranium for the local Drinking Liberally . Otherwise, check out the Drinking Liberally web site for dates and times of a chapter near you.
Hell of a speech by Obama today. I hope we take advantage of the opportunity he’s provided to us to have a mature discussion of race in America (and gender and class and all the other things that have been used for too long to divide us).
I’m not optimistic we’ll have that discussion – there are too many people with too many incentives to avoid an honest discussion and instead pander to the worst impulses of some.
But, even if we don’t have an honest discussion, on the bright side, at least I’ve found someone worthy of the presidency. Obama today demonstrated how a president behaves.
Hell of a speech indeed. Obama took the adversity thrown at him and turned it into a chance to come to bring people together, rather than divide us. This was the speech of a leader. He demonstrated both his great intellect, but his absolute resolve to not be distracted and drawn into a fight that no one can win, but everyone can lose.
If I harbored any doubts about Sen. Obama, this dismissed them all. This is the person we need to lead us through the bad times ahead. And Lord, are we going to have bad times ahead with the mess left us by the gang of foolish, greedy, hateful neoconservative thugs in power now.
I’m hoping this Obama thing will get over quickly and Obama gets the Democratic nomination. I want to see Hillary return to New York with nothing.
PS – I won’t be voting for McCain either.
PPS – Watch the consumption of alcohol tonight. Cops would love to make a DUI bust on one of the DL participants.
# 3 too bad for you. Sen. Clinton will return to NY to take a leadership role in a super majority in the Senate.
Sorry, but there is just no way you can win.
Sucks to be you.
I was astounded and amazed by Obama’s speech today! It was rejunvenating to hear him speak today! There is still hope for our great country! GO OBAMA!
For a good take on the Obama speech and the reaction of the lowest (un)common denominators, try:

Don’t be so sure Obama is over this. This guilt by association ploy is as vicious an attack as the swift-boating was in 2004.
A lot of Wright’s remarks can be understood in the context of Black Liberation Theology – but hardly anybody in the greater society understands it. I just found out a bit about it today.
The worst attack came from Shelby Steele in the WSJ. As ugly and reprehensible a piece of writing as I have ever seen.
This man, Steele, is so resentful of Obama’s politics and political gifts, he’ll stop at nothing to prevent Obama’s rise.
Ugly fear may still win on this. I hope it doesn’t but it just might.
Roger Rabbit is ill and cannot attend tonight.
Sometimes the power of speeches like that works slowly. Obama may not win this year. We may not win this year. But the hatemongers and fear peddlers had better start packing because the tide of righteous anger beginning to swell across our nation will not be stopped until justice has been satisfied.
@ 9 We can’t let that happen. This is too important, and the risks are too grave.
We must not let this opportunity pass with no challenge to those who would defeat the future that we have to embrace, or America will wither and die.
We cannot allow this opportunity to be smashed under the heels of those who gain only through hate and fear.
It is far too important.
@ 11 I really don’t think we will get another chance. I don’t think we can survive Bush term #3 as carried out by McCain.
Come on Roger and BO, what are you talking about? You seriously have any doubts Obama will not make it all the way???? No chance in hell that will happen!
@ 14 No.
@ 15 – Whew…you had me worried that you were losing hope…thought I may have missed something today in the news. Obama will take it all the way, just time for Hilary to step aside and get the party to work together.
@14 “Come on Roger and BO, what are you talking about?”
I have no idea, but it sounds good.
I don’t think a Democratic victory in 2008 is a sure thing, and Democrats should not get complacent or overconfident. The rethugs will come at us with everything they’ve got. We’ve got to be ready for their whole litany of smears, lies, and hate.
TJ@1 YEA BY THROWING HIS WHITE GRANDMOTHER UNDER THE BUS.FUCK HIM AND THE STREET CAR HE RODE IN ON.AND ONE MORE THING BRING THAT BITCH HE CALLS A WIFE HIM.HE IS TOAST.
@ 18 Democrats should not get complacent or overconfident
That is the only way my confidence expressed in @ 15 will not be in vain.
@ 19, go fuck yourself. No one else is gonna do it for you.
BTW, did anyone else see how McCain remark that “Iran is training Al Queda and sending them into Iraq”?
And then Lieberman correcting McCain. Iran is Shia, Al Queda and Shia are mortal enemies.
And anyone believes this senile man will become our next president?
One could also propose that pigs can fly.
Only in wingnut world do such fantasies give wing.
Also only in Diebold land, do such sick world views exist.
WARNING: Diebold land does exist. And it can change election results.
@20 I dislike being a wet blanket but I survive and thrive by being a realist. I remember Ms. Gregoire telling me and Mrs. Rabbit two weeks before the election that she wasn’t worried because she was up 12% in the polls. I’m just a little 33# rabbit without inside information but KING 5 was reporting at the time that her lead had evaporated and the race was a dead heat. Her campaign manager was also way too confident in light of the polls being reported in the media and it struck me that these people were asleep. They damn near blew the election and put Rossi in power. There’s too much at stake in these elections for candidates and campaign managers to get a bad case of Ostrich Syndrome at the wrong time. As a little 33# rabbit all I can do is tell my friends at the grass-roots level to never take anything for granted or get complacent or overconfident because it’s never over until the election is certified.
@ 22 I agree.
Roger, we are so far, and too close, to the real election campaign.
Forgive me if I am just enjoying a moment of reality of a well spoken, realistic and honest moment.
Tomorrow we fight for freedom and America.
The struggle of true patriots never ends.
Last year it was $3 gas. This year it’s $4 gas. Next year it will be $5 gas and the year after that $6 gas. People are stuck driving to work because there’s no room on the bus and light rail is still years away. It’s easy to feel trapped and helpless in such a situation.
So how does one control his fate when we’re all glass bottles bobbing on a vast economic ocean?
There’s no sure way, of course. All I can tell you is, don’t live on the edge. Buy less house and car than you can afford. Use the extra money to prepay loans. Stash away some rainy day cash. Develop sources of income besides your job, because jobs don’t last. Learn how to live simply and frugally. A public park is a great place to live because you’re never alone and grass tastes okay after you get used to it although lettuce is better and carrots … well … YUMMY!!!! I LOVE CARROTS!!! So find out where the carrot farms are …
Of course, the best way to cope with the daily commute and office rat race is to retire so you don’t have to. I never really appreciated how much it sucks until I didn’t have to do it anymore.
Roger, ILY, I really do, but this was meant for one blog post up.
