6:11 PM: The Montlake Alehouse is packed with debate gawkers. I cannot connect to the wireless right now so I’m using my cell phone as a modem. Slow, slow, slow.
6:13 PM: Sarah Palin unleashes her first lie about Obama raising taxes!
6:16 PM: Has anybody figured out yet whether Sarah’s lip coloring is a tattoo? Hey…I’m not knocking it. Decorative scarification is cool…in some parts of the world.
6:23 PM: When Sarah Palin says she had to “take on those oil companies in Alaska”…does she mean that in the Biblical sense?
6:26 PM: Joe Biden agrees with Sarah’s windfall profit tax (and he points out that McCain would never go for such nonsense). Now, I suppose, the “hard left” will be slamming Biden for saying he “agrees with Sarah” too often.
6:31 PM: I think she just said, “How are we going to get there to positively affect the impacts.” But maybe she was just speaking in tongues or something.
6:33 PM: I’m watching this on CNN and they have some sort of attitudimeter on uncommitted Ohio voters, broken down by sex. (Although I though Ohioans were mostly broken down by drinking….) Anyway, women go positive when Joe starts talking, and then after a brief lag, men tag along with the women. When Sarah starts talking, women go negative and men go positive. Then the moderator interrupts. I think there is going to be an epidemic of blue-balls in Ohio tonight.
6:49 PM: I think Sarah just gave a treatise on “Diplomacy” citing her one-hour Evelyn Wood course by Henry Kissinger.
6:51 PM: Biden just mentioned McCain’s gaffe on Spanish radio, where he suggested he would not sit down with the leadership of Spain. And Sarah didn’t utter “Horseshit! Horseshit!” Man…Sarah is disappointing me here.
7:16 PM: On VP authority: Sarah says she agrees with VP Cheney. Biden says Cheney has been the most dangerous VP ever. Certainly this is true with respect to his hunting buddies!
7:28 PM: Sarah will change the tone in Washington “as [she] did in Alaska” by “appointing people regardless of party.” But, how many high-school friends does she have????
7:somethingortheother: Sarah parrots McCain in jabbing at the media (at least as I experienced it through the filter of CNN). While that kind of thing may work well for rousing the base, it seems like a really, really stupid strategy in every other way.
Post Debate: I was hoping Sarah would get asked to name the media she consumes. I’m thinking she reads both the Alaska Free Press and the Free Alaska Press.
7:45: The television screen says that CNN is going to report on the focus group reactions and result of a national debate poll soon. But they have turned down the volume and the Montlake Alehouse has erupted into a sea of boisterous conversations. So, I’ll just have to wing it and give my opinion without help from a focus group and a poll.
Basically, Biden did exactly what he needed to do. He attacked McCain without attacking Palin. He looked at her, he showed her respect, he displayed confidence and sincerity. He committed no blunders that I noticed. He was composed.
Palin? She did pretty well given her “relative youth and inexperience.” There were a few awkward moments (as one would expect for a novice). As I watched the debate, two “issues” with Palin kept gnawing at me. First, she smiled way too much and at inappropriate times. That shit doesn’t even cut it on the high school debate team (yep…I was there). It made me feel like she didn’t really understand the gravity of the moment and the position for which she has been selected.
Secondly, her answers frequently seemed canned. She had carefully prepared talking points ready to go, and she had them down pat—even when they didn’t quite fit the questions being asked. Sure…Biden was guilty of the same thing at times. But on a scale of genuineness from 1 to 10, Biden scored an 8 and Palen, a 4. But I’m a dirty fucking hippie, so what do I know.
Roger Rabbit spews:
This is disastrous for Palin. Biden is slaughtering her. And she’s doing everything wrong. She’s being hurt most of all by her snarky, grinning, patronizing, snide, little-girl-squeaky-voice hey-look-at-me playacting.
She had a few good moments when she looked serious and sincere, but unfortunately for her, that lasted only a few seconds. She can’t help herself.
The Republicans were crazy to think she could debate Biden without self-destructing.

What’s your basis for this assertion, stupid dog? Ifill is merely asking questions. She’s asking both candidates the same questions, so how can that be biased? Biden, on the other hand, made it clear and simple: “Dick Cheney is the most dangerous vice president in our nation’s history.”
michael spews:

Biden’s rebuttal of McCain’s “maverick” claims was deadly. The “kitchen table” imagery is a stroke of genius. He has done a masterful job tonight of being succinct, staying on point, and explaining complex things in simple and understandable terms. Palin is outclassed. Biden won this debate hands-down.
michael spews:
@51
Come on admit it, you live in a group-home and wear a diaper.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Palin’s little speech about “working together” and “bringing both sides together” “up there in Alaska” is a crock. Alaska is a one-party state.
Roger Rabbit spews:

Roger Rabbit spews:
@67 No. It reflects poorly on her, though. And that’s my point.
I don’t want to dwell on this too much, but the media is foundation of our democracy. It is through them that we get the information we need to make responsible judgments as citizens. An independent press is the ordinary citizen’s only way to know what’s going on in the world. When Republicans act like they hate the media, which is all the time, they send a message that says, “you don’t have a right to know.” And that’s the wrong message for a free society. Without the media, we would lose our freedom.
The Real Puddybud spews:

Um, I was watching the ladies respond on television and they all said Sarah wiped the floor with Joe. Now, I wouldn’t go that far, but she certainly held her own. Which really gives the HA crowd fits.
Just look around you. Based on the posts alone, you know Biden just didn’t get the job done.
Biden just didn’t get the job done.
Say it isn’t so Joe!
(But it is)

Face it Republi-twats, you love Palin because when she is on TV reading the teleprompter, you can pretend a hot chick gives a shit about you.
None of them ever have, or will.

I had to laugh when Palin made false claims as to experience with bi-partisanship in …ALASKA! As if there is anything more than varying shades of conservatism and back-assed syndrome.

Yes, the Fox news whores thought Palin was the second coming of Churchill.
What a shocker!

@135 I wondered what she was doing on her knees at Joe’s podium. Thanks for letting me know!

@137 The only “bipartisanship” they have in Alaska is between the Republican factions, and then only occasionally.

But the two votes she gained from Wassila ain’t going to change a thing.

The real question is will Palin lose the election before she is forced to wear a prison jump suit?
Mr. Cynical spews:
Will be interesting to look at the polls on Monday morning. Many reliable pollsters, like Rasmussen, use a 3-day rolling average.
So Monday will be the 1st poll where this debate is 100% included.
I expect you will be seeing Palin campaigning aggressively thru Election Day. I think one of the strategies (although not sure I agree) was to put her on the sidelines for a couple of weeks to allow the ambush onslaught to run it’s course and become old news..then trot her out again.
Say what you will, she connects well with average Americans. You KLOWNS are not average Americans!! The Leftist Highbrow’s who like to waste time trying to out-enlighten each other are NOT her target….
In other words, Palin doesn’t really give a shit what KLOWNS think!

The AOL straw poll, mentioned earlier, made me laugh. I tried to log onto AOL last night several times, and the servers wouldn’t let me in. My guess was that they were overwhelmed because of the debate, but it didn’t occur to me that there was a straw poll in progress.
Mostly I think straw polls were a waste of time, but one time a few months ago I decided to click on a straw poll (“who should be the next President?”)just out of curiousity. After recording my vote for Obama, it gave me the the results. It said McCain was leading by some 56% – IN EVERY STATE, BY THE SAME PERCENTAGE. Obviously, someone in the McCain camp had the job of hitting straw polls with multiple entries in order to give the perception that he was ahead.

As usual comments from the left are rude, ill considered, mostly mean spirited and often vulgar. Also just plain wrong. Good move by the way to attack Palin’s sexual morals and those of her daughter. Isn’t the liberal cant that women can advance without sleeping their way up? I guess you lefties don’t really believe that or anything else you profess really. Like party leaders like party followers I suppose…
Here’s the thing; we have a basically sound economy and fundamentally good country.
6% unemployment, 4-5% inflation and the majority of people working and paying their bills is a good thing. I know that basic economics is something most progressive/liberals don’t understand but for goodness sake educate yourselves.
Are there bad home loans out there? Sure. About half of the unemployment rate is people who simply won’t work. Why would they when money is stolen from me to pay for them and their kids? By the same token, some percentage of home loans will fail. There are people who just won’t pay their bills. They are called ‘bad risks’, and banks used not to lend to them. That is until Barney Frank, Acorn and that ilk forced them to do so. This problem is a liberal one, not a conservative one. Economics 101 folks, educate yourselves.
The rest of the world hates us? Who cares? When I lived in Italy they could have cared less what Americans thought of them. The Engligh and French don’t even consider what we might think when they hold elections or conduct foreign policy. I simply don’t believe that leaders here should be working for Europe or Asia. They don’t have to like us, but they do have to deal with us. Our leaders should be representing our interests and the rest of the world can eat cake. I know that, again, progressives don’t bother to study basic civics, or if they do it is to lay false blame for ancient history on current generations. (Just so you know, I never participated in Indian wars, slavery or segregation. Leave everyone alone about it already!)
How do you stand being in a political ideology that hates your own country? If it’s that bad here, emigrate. Europe would love your pessimistic socialism, as would most of Latin America. Why don’t you get out and leave this country to people who love it and believe in it? By the way take the damn unions with you. Do that, and block all Chinese industrial trash made from toxic waste from being imported, and this country would again be an economic powerhouse.
It looks like your hack politician will win the presidency. God help us all because that unqualified man will do more damage than any 10 Bush’s to real Americans. Just to spike the guns, I would have voted for Colin Powell, so don’t bother playing the rascist angle. Martin Luther King wanted men judged by the character rather than the color, and Obama is 9 parts ambition to one part greed. Again, God help us all.

I thought Palin was great. She missed a few opprotunities to nail them on education. Like why Obama says he is all about public education but is against giving vouchers. But if you ask Obama where his kids go to school here is his answer.
No!!!!
The Chicago Tribune sums up some of their answers:
“My kids have gone to the University of Chicago Lab School, a private school, because I taught there,” Obama responded. “It was five minutes from our house. So it was the best option for our kids.”
Well there is your answer folks. Obama sends his kids to private school. Not only that he chose to teach in a private school. What about doing all you can for public schools. Obama has not done crap on education for children except to vote to teach sex education. PUBLIC SCHOOL is good enough for our kids but NO PUBLIC SCHOOL FOR OBAMA’S KIDS.

Michelle Obama on how we should work for our communities; Like our public schools and how she understands the plight of low income families.
There’s not a lot of money in Zanesville. Nearly a quarter of the Ohio town’s population, 22.4 percent, is living below the poverty line, including 32.3 percent of those under 18 years of age.
That’s nearly double the national poverty rate, officially reported by the Census Bureau last August as 12.3 percent overall, nationwide, and 17.4 percent for those under 18.
Still, Michelle Obama stopped by the other day during a campaign visit and warned the locals to not go for the big money.
“We left corporate America, which is a lot of what we’re asking young people to do,” she told a group of women at a day-care center. “Don’t go into corporate America. You know, become teachers. Work for the community. Be social workers. Be a nurse. Those are the careers that we need, and we’re encouraging our young people to do that. But if you make that choice, as we did, to move out of the money-making industry into the helping industry, then your salaries respond.”
Faced with allegedly skimpy paychecks in the “helping industry,” Mrs. Obama complained that “many of our bright stars are going into corporate law or hedge-fund management.”
Rather than an honest attempt at providing career advice for the women in Zanesville, few of whom in all likelihood had ever thought about getting a job in hedge funds, it seems that Michelle Obama was simply interested in taking a cheap political shot.
It just so happens that two of the people who took the exact path that Mrs. Obama was railing against — i.e., choosing jobs in corporate law and hedge-fund management over working in the “helping industry” — are Hillary Clinton and her daughter.
Hillary spent 15 years at the Rose Law Firm, one of the most prestigious corporate law offices in Arkansas, where she represented large companies and served on corporate boards, including Wal-Mart’s.
In 2006, Chelsea Clinton started working for Avenue Capital Group, a hedge fund that manages approximately $12 billion in assets, specializing in trading in distressed and undervalued credit-related securities and the debt of companies that are nearing or have filed for bankruptcy.
The New York Daily News estimated the former first daughter’s salary at Avenue Capital to be in the range of $100,000 to $150,000.
What Michelle Obama didn’t mention during the Zanesville visit is that she’s done pretty well by helping herself to a sizeable slice of “helping industry” money at the University of Chicago Hospital.
Employed as vice president for community affairs, Mrs. Obama’s annual compensation jumped from $121,910 in 2004, just before her husband was elected to the Senate, to $316,962 in 2005, just after he took office.
That’s a $195,052 raise — not bad for someone who looks down her nose at the “money-making industry.”
All told, the total income declared by the Obama household on the couple’s 2006 income tax return, figuring his Senate salary, book royalties and her compensation from sitting on corporate boards, was $991,296 — again, not bad for sacrificing themselves in the “helping industry.”
Still, Mrs. Obama complained about the amount of money she has to spend on piano, dance and other lessons for her two children and the burden of paying back student loans from her time at Princeton and Harvard.
“The salaries don’t keep up with the cost of paying off the debt,” she said, referring to the student loans, “so you’re in your 40s, still paying off your debt at a time when you have to save for your kids.”
It’s doubtful that many in the audience could feel Mrs. Obama’s pain. The median income for female workers in Zanesville last year was $20,142. In surrounding Muskingum County, 88 percent of adults don’t have a college degree and an estimated 20 percent don’t have high school diplomas.
“Barack and I were in that position,” continued Michelle Obama, complaining about the college loans. “Up until a few years ago, we were struggling to figure out how we would save for our kids.”
And then, Shazam!, capitalism saved the day.
“The only reason we’re not in that position is that Barack wrote two best-selling books,” she explained. “It was like Jack and his magic beans.”
And the truckers in the “money-making industry” who delivered the books? They’re not in a “helping industry”? And they’re more greedy than a community affairs coordinator at a hospital, pocketing $316,962?

Surprisingly when Michelle sympathized with these women about how her and Barak have had to scrimp and save their pennies to send their girls to summer camp, piano lessons ect. She forgot to mention that it was like only 1/16 of 1% of her income that she had to worry about.
Yes I think maybe you should help out your communities like the Obama’s have; you know giving back to your communities like they have.
Give me a break.

The 10,000.00 She mentioned that she had a hard time paying was a drop in the bucket to the Obama family. Those people must have thought she was nuts. Like they take 10,000.00 worth of their 35,000.00 salary to pay for summer camp and piano lessons for their kids. I think that they might be a little more interested in how they are paying the bills, buying the food and paying for housing and medical care. I am sure that Michelle Obama would like us all to believe how hard she has it and how she can sympathize with all the little people. How stupid must we appear to believe she understands the issues facing families. She knows nothing about how tough life can be reading about it in the news is not like experiencing it. When she walks out of her mansion after eating her organic breakfast, recommended by her expensive pediatrician, and takes her kids off to their private school, to learn how to help out in their community and all, she must be thinking I am so in touch with the little people.
