After interviewing former Harvard Dean Harry Lewis, here is what reporter Emily Heffter chose to print in the Seattle Times:
Harry Lewis, a Harvard computer science professor and former dean of the school, confirmed that Burner did study economics at Harvard.
“She doesn’t have a degree in economics,” he said. “It’s a specialty within the computer science degree that she has.”
And here is Dean Lewis in his own unexpurgated words (the emphasis is mine):
I’m the professor and ex-dean who was quoted in the story, and as it happens, also the guy who wrote the CS degree requirements. At the time Darcy was at Harvard, she would have needed, as part of her CS degree requirements, several courses in a technical specialization area related to CS. She fulfilled that CS degree requirement by specializing in Economics (which meant, by the way, that she couldn’t have taken just the easy, non-mathematical Ec courses). So it’s not exactly a minor (which we didn’t have then, though we do now), and it’s also not anything that the registrar would be able to certify (because it’s an internal requirement of the computer science faculty). But it’s something everyone getting a degree in CS had to do (though other students would have other specialties). The way Darcy is describing herself is accurate.
And here is Dean Lewis’ account of his interview with Heffter:
Talked to her and told her you had a degree in CS with a specialization in Ec. She said you were claiming to have a degree in Ec and I just repeated myself. She asked me what that consisted of and I said a block of Ec courses. She started to ask me if that would make you qualified … and I cut her off, saying I couldn’t judge economics qualifications. She thanked me and said that was helpful.
Darcy Burner does indeed have a degree from Harvard in computer science and economics, and it is utterly outrageous that the Times would choose to turn the NRCC’s parsing of the word “and” into a front page gotcha story defaming Darcy’s character.
They owe her an apology.

Burner said she has “a degree in computer science and economics.” Grammar clearly not being the long suit of conservatives, this means she has ONE degree in BOTH subjects. IF she had said “I have degreeS in computer science and economics” that would be claiming she has a degree in economics, along with one on in CS.

Based on what many people have said to journalists and pollsters, it seems likely that Nov. 4 will be a referendum on the GOP’s stewardship of their jobs, savings, retirement, and financial future.
At this moment the Dow is down over 175 points, and is moving clsoer to testing the 8,000 level. October 2008 continues to be the worst month for the stock market in decades.
401(k) statements come out at the end of the month. This means many voters will receive their October statements on Nov. 3 … the day before the election.

In today’s news, Alan Greenspan told the House Oversight Committee that he was “shocked” to discover that unregulated financial institutions operating in their self-interest failed to regulate themselves.
“Greenspan said he had made a ‘mistake’ in believing that banks in operating in their self-interest would be sufficient to protect their shareholders and the equity in their institutions. Greenspan called this ‘a flaw in the model that I perceived is the critical functioning structure that defines how the world works.’ … Greenspan said in his testimony to the committee that he and others who believed lending institutions would do a good job of protecting their shareholders are in a ‘state of shocked disbelief.'”

The victory of Clinton back in 92 produced strange waves of fear. We saw the rise of militia movements and heard strange tales of black helicopters and the Clinton “death squads”. It was totally weird.
History doesn’t often repeat but it usually rhymes. This time we’ll definitely see something different. At first the right will grasping at straws to express it. After all the defeat will stunning – strong landslides in the electoral college and a solid majority in the popular vote.
The loathing can’t be too overtly racist because that will only sink them further although surely that undercurrent will be there. So I predict a coupling of branding Obama as a “radical socialist” with some kind of quasi racist attack on Michelle Obama. As Obama consolidates his adminstration and his coalition in the Congress, I think we’ll see racist associations of Obama with truly dodgy characters like Robert Mugabe. We’re all too familiar with this already here in Seattle with the writing of the lunatic Minnow over Ron Sims.

And on the matter of incessant atrtacks on the Constitution and civil liberties, certainly there are far more coming from Democrats than Republicans: attacks on the Second Amendment, Tenth Amendment, Ninth Amendment, Fifth Amendment, Fourteenth Amendment.
You have a candidate for President who favors Supreme Court justices who write books explaining why they ignore the Constitution (that would be Justice Breyer’s book “Active Liberty”).

You’re being a dope, Goldy. In the debates Burner claimed to have an a degree in economics. Not a CS degree, not a CS and econ degree, but a degree in economics. This was a deliberation distortion because the audience had an acute focus on the economy, and the econ credential would make a better presentation. What the audience wasn’t told was the “econ degree” consisted of 5 classes – this is not what people have in mind when they hear the word “degree.” If it is then I imagine a lot of people would have much more impressive resumes.
