The Soviets called it “agitprop”. The purpose was to agitate people through sowing of doubt even amongst people who would normally be in a position to know otherwise. Geeks call it “FUD”; Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt. It creates a sense of distrust amongst the spectators in the argument and is aimed at the people most easily influenced by particular types of phraseology or media. This is it’s express purpose.
FOXNews has several specialists in these methods. As an example, Orly Taite was born into a KGB family, and raised in a KGB school. When she came into her 15 minutes here in the US, she was well-versed in the propaganda methods and supported by the individuals who would like to see nothing better than everyone wondering what the facts really are, even in the face of direct evidence that anyone is allowed to look at. she was very well paid for her knowledge, and became quite wealthy. When she’d used up her credibility, she faded off into the woodwork.
The Koch family, the Bush family, people like Sheldon Adelson and Ken Griffin et al, are heavily invested in Chinese manufacturing and property. Rupert Murdoch has apparently aquired several thousand acres of prime farmland in eastern China, as has Foster Friess and other hard core rightists. The Bush family is heavily invested in similar properties in Northern Brazil.
China is corrupt, everyone who has done business there knows that, and they know full well that, like Mexico, one must be willing to allow Government officials to chisel off parts of ones profit and take a piece of the pie for themselves. Thats just the reality of it. They are in a position to deny anyone seeking to do business there the ability to do so. In exchange for such payoffs of course, the businessman is shielded by the local officials from any real scrutiny by the law, including that of outsiders.
So you kick down a little cash for those folks. You have to, or you just don’t do business there. China is famous for this, as is Mexico, Brazil, Hong Kong, Taiwan, much of Africa etc. Florida and New Orleans and New York City too.
So what you are seeing now, is people like the Kochs and other mega-industrialists being supported in their propaganda efforts by agitprop specialists from the old Soviet Union and China, just as the CIA and FBI recruited former SS and Gestapo officials into their ranks after the second world war. Money talks, if one can create a private intelligence network working at the behest of, and for the interests of the largest corporations in the world or the wealthiest individuals, one not need even spend a whole lot of one’s own money to do so. Call it “consultation” or even build specialist companies that are entirely dedicated to investigating, gathering, consolidating and analyzing such intelligence and disseminating agitation propaganda to counter any opposition. Such expenses are even tax-deductible. It isn’t difficult when major shareholders are also the owners of the mass media. Most of those companies have internal operating budgets that exceed whole national outlays for some countries. You can do a hell of a lot of with a billion dollars if you place it in the right hands and hire the right people. Imagine what one could do with $100 Billion.
Psychologists, anthropologists, journalists, and the owners of media companies are just as corrupt as the rest of the population. More so if they are working for a company and their focus is on maintaining a political position for that company or industrial concern even if it means supporting the political positioning of a market competitor.
I can think of five such companies right off the bat. They are very well funded, being contracted to some of the wealthiest and most powerful mega-corporations in the world, and they work right out in the open. They’re even traded on the stock market.

Somehow this was missed by the Friday Night Funnies Purveyor… Remember Obummer was for the Egyptian Arab Spring, even though he was warned by others the Muslim Brotherhood would take over… So we have these two stories here and here skipped over by the thread creator…
Why? Maybe something about a “match made in heaven” was misconstrued as always…
Deathfrogg spews:
I don’t understand the point of your links there, Spudds. Not one mention of the Muslim Brotherhood, only another article on an example of the regular trade disputes that all countries trading in close quarters experience, and another on how Women are not being treated equally in countries that have culturally always treated their Women as property.
What do you propose we do? Give definitive answers, use factual information given the cultural norms of the nations involved. Make one single attempt to illustrate your point concerning each of the articles you’ve linked to here. Please be succinct.

Geeks call it “FUD”; Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.
I heard that on the two days I listened to conservative radio on my way in.
Day 1
On the one conservative station they were talking about the beating of Reginald Denny and the coming Race Riots and that all white people should be very afraid of the violent brown people.
On the other conservative station, they were talking about the dangers of Islamic terrorist and how they were hell bent on destroying Christian white Americans.
Day 2
On one Conservative talk radio station they were discussing that new labor rules would not allow Christians like Tim Tebow to work on small farms.
On the other Conservative talk radio station they were wondering if FARC (Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia) was behind the Secret Service scandal, or maybe it was the Russians. Either way, communists were some how involved.
See a theme?

Now that is big news, yet the Friday Night Funnies Purveyor chose not to trumpet that. I guess Obummer’s Sadministration received a red phone call that the jihadis (friends of many HA leftist peeps) stopped plotting mayhem against the western society!
Just read the National Journal article called “The Post Al Qaida Era”.
But others have claimed master bomb maker Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri has re-surfaced. Hmmm… And didn’t Iran recently announce it was building an army of computer hackers to attack American infrastructure, disabling our water supplies, knocking out our high power electrical grid, and causing great havoc to anything computers interact with. So, if we attack Iran, they still have no right whatsoever to attack us back? This is what I don’t understand, you Fascist folks seem to have no grasp whatsoever about how warfare actually works. I will spell it out for you real slow.
If the conservative pro-war corporatists succeed in creating the political atmosphere in which American citizens would be convinced to start a war with someone like Iran, do you think that we’d be left free, happy and clean here at home?
I would like you to seriously answer that question without hyperbole.
I would think that with the support of Russia and China, Iran would hardly be left as helpless in it’s own defense as Iraq was. We didn’t attack Iraq because they were strong and threatened us, we attacked them because they were weak and unable to defend themselves and they had something we wanted. Iran is NOT going to be such an easy pushover. Unlike Iraq, they have friends, friends with powerful and well-established military institutions. Iran has a very long and well-established military tradition. They are not stupid, nor are they weak.
It would seem to me that it would be better to not start a war in the first place. Iran is surrounded by hostile forces with political supporters that are actively and publicly promoting an attack on their nation. They are perfectly aware of that. How would you expect any nation to react under such circumstances?
If you think for one second, that we could launch a war against Iran and not suffer consequences here at home, even severe consequences such as the loss of several large population centers and critical industrial infrastructure, you’re even stupider than I thought you were.

Roger Rabbit’s Advice For Would-Be Survivalists
1. Fortifications are worse than useless, because they tie you down to a fixed location, so once you’re located, you’re as good as caught; and any fort, no matter how cleverly or strongly built, can be overcome by siege. All you have is a hole; they have backhoes, pneumatic drills, and explosives from C-4 all the way up to hydrogen bombs — one way or another they’re gonna dig you out of there.
2. If you gotta dig a hole, dig a little one, not a big one. Little holes are harder to find. But the problem is, snakes can crawl into even the smallest of holes.
3. If you’re being pursued, the best tactic is mobile warfare, not holing up. You’ll usually be okay if you run like hell through the densest brush in the woods, and keep moving because once they know where you are, it’s easy to surround you and wait for you to come out.
4. In a hot pursuit, it’s better to be a small rabbit than a large deer, because smaller is harder to see.
5. Living off the land is easier than trying to carry 30 years of food, lattes, and TP in a backpack. You can save a lot of weight by using leaves to wipe your ass. Weight slows you down, and a backpack tangles in brush.
6. If you have to flee from Seattle cops for some reason, North Bend isn’t as good a place to hide as Paraguay is.
7. You can save yourself all the trouble of building a hidey hole, stocking it with supplies, and fending off 100 cops by not doing anything to bring the cops looking for you in the first place.
Any questions?
No Time for Fascists spews:
And you dont think the progressive radio nerds use the same tactic?
No. They don’t.
Don’t try to play the false equivalency argument. It doesn’t work.
On those two days, the SINGLE liberal talk radio was talking about republicans making it harder to get a student loan.
On the second, they were discussing the consequences of the republican funding rules will require closing post offices in small rural communities.
(ohhhhh scary!)
Shorter Conservative radio: Brown people are going to kill you, be terrified.
Shorter Liberal radio: Republicans don’t want to pay their fair share of taxes so everyone suffers.
Different by a factor of a million. Liberals do not, on a regular basis, hate monger like that. We would shun that kind of idiocy. Conservatives cannot say the same.

We’ve got people like that in Gig Harbor, they try to start arguments with people who have bumper stickers they don’t like at the gas station, they cut in front of people in the self checkout at Costco (4 machines, one line), they blow through 4 way stops. They’re 40-60, male, overweight, and think people are afraid of them or that they can impose on people for some reason. I’m 6’2″ 190#. I ride a bike. I swim. I do some kick boxing. I spent 10 years at a job where I had to take a classes with names like “non-violent crises resolution” and “restraint & take down” for when the non-violent stuff didn’t work.
I don’t think there’s really any question of what would happen if they really did push things and I needed to use force. But, I wonder if what they really want IS for someone to kick their ass.
My favorite encounter with these types. Coming to a 4 way stop I guess the other guy thought he had the right of way. I stop. He stops. I start to go though the intersection. He shoots his car out into the intersection, stops and angrily waves his at me. His huge and expensive watch gleams on his wrist. He’s blocking my way, so I stop. He starts yelling at me, in his car, with the windows up. I have no idea what he’s saying. I back my car up 15′ or so. I drive around him and as I drive around him he’s again waving his fists at me. I stop. I reach down and pick up the axe that’s on the floor of my car and wave it at him. He gets a deer in the headlights look on his face, which goes pale and chirps his tires speeding away from me. I head over to my parents house and use the axe to help do some cleanup work in their yard.
The way that guy blew up, I could see the veins bulging in his neck and on his forehead. He probably took a year off of his life in that one little 20 second encounter. For me, I laughed my ass off though the whole thing.

Roger Rabbit spews:
Mitt Rmoney wants to cast the 2012 election as a referendum on how President Obama has managed the economy. I say go for it!
Here’s what voters should consider.
In the U.S., the banking crisis was promptly remediated by temporarily recapitalizing the banks with public funds while they rebuilt their private capital.
This policy — initiated by President Bush and continued by President Obama — “catalyzed a quick bounce-back from catastrophic financial failure.”
The result: “Two years after the fall of Lehman Brothers, the U.S. economy had already resumed economic growth. While the recovery is still tentative, fragile, and too slow, uemployment is falling consistently and even home sales and auto sales are advancing. Today, U.S. banks are lending again. The growth of credit is funding new investment by small businesses ….”
(Barron’s, 4/30/12, p. 33, http://online.barrons.com/arti.....OL_hpp_mag)
Meanwhile, in Europe, Germany is forcing the kind of policies favored by America’s conservatives — slashing budgets, cutting wages and pensions, and austerity — and it’s not working. The Continent is sinking deeper into recession. Economies are contracting. Unemployment is soaring. The European Union is falling apart.
Obama is right and Rmoney is wrong. The U.S. is on the right track. Yes, the recovery is slow, but the U.S. is recovering; and so is the U.S. job market, as the bikini graph shows:
http://thepoliticalcarnival.ne.....ps-to-8-2/
Sure, the recovery is slow, but that’s always the case with balance-sheet recessions and there’s no way to speed it up except with massive government spending (see, e.g., World War 2), which Republicans say they don’t want.
Today, we see the clear contrast between liberal economic policies that are working in the U.S. and conservative economic policies that aren’t working in Europe. So, yes, let the 2012 election be a referendum on liberal vs. conservative economic theory.
The latter, of course, is factionalized. Not content with merely mucking up the broad economy, conservatives are fighting among themselves.
So let the Rmoneyite One Percent Dead Enders and the Paulistas go their separate ways, splitting the GOP vote and re-electing Obama. That’s what’s best for America and the world.
And then, after Obama is ensconced in his second term and no longer needs Wall Street campaign money, let him throw all the Wall Streeters out of his administration. If you want to restore America to Main Streeters and working families, that’s how you do it.
Meanwhile, let Europe wallow in their own problems. They don’t need our help. They’re going to take care of it themselves. Next weekend French and Greek voters will give Angela Merkel the finger by electing socialist leaders in their countries. I’m not suggesting that’s the solution to their problems, it isn’t, but even socialists understand something that conservatives don’t: You can’t slash-and-burn your way to prosperity, and when the working and middle classes go under, the rich sink with them.

The GOP’s chances of strengthening its hand in Congress are deteriorating.
http://nbcpolitics.msnbc.msn.c.....rably?lite
Roger Rabbit Commentary: Democrats have to defend more Senate seats than Republicans do, but GOPers have hurt themselves with their outrageous antics, infighting, and radical policies; and Democrats are recruiting much higher quality candidates. This has put some races in play that previously were considered “safe” for Republicans, and is making Democrats more competitive in races where they were thought to be vulnerable.
Personally, I don’t see any reason for any voter to vote for any Republican given their awful record on 9/11 negligence, the Iraq war, torture, their inability to capture or kill Osama bin Laden, their catastrophic handling of the economy, their corruption and mismanagement, and the embarrassing antics of people like Rep. Joe “Deadbeat Dad” Walsh, Joe the Plumber, and the Arizona legislature. But there are still a lot of stupid, irrational, and low information voters in our country.
However, even Republicans know stupid voters aren’t the majority, so look for them to invest heavily in voter suppression and smear campaigns; and look for their candidates to lie, hide their true intentions, and try to deceive voters about what they’ll actually do in office.
The upcoming recall elections in Wisconsin may provide something of a litmus test on how willing voters are to buy GOP bullshit. Gov. Walker promised 250,000 jobs in 4 years; he actually delivered -23,900 jobs over the last 12 months. He’s running ads claiming he has created jobs; that’s a lie, and if Wisconsin voters realize it’s a lie, he may be gone by June. Let’s hope so, for Wisconsin’s sake.

The Huge Environmental Victory Nobody Knows About
The Koches of the world didn’t win the climate war when they defeated cap-and-trade in Congress. They lost that war to grassroots NIMBYs working at local government levels. Not a single new coal plant is being built in the U.S.
“Stopping new coal plants may be the most significant achievement of American environmentalists since the passage of the Clean Air Act and the Clean Water Act in the 1970s. As this article goes to press, 166 proposed coal-fired power plants have been cancelled, legally barred, or otherwise stopped. That means that each year … the equivalent of 9.5 percent of US emissions won’t be entering the atmosphere. The proposed cap-and-trade legislation wold, at best, … have achieved only a 5 percent reduction.”
That looks like victory, not defeat. How was it done?
“When cap-and-trade legislation failed, the conventional wisdom became that the US was simply incapable of taking meaningful action; corporate polluters were too strong, the political system too dominated by industry money, the public too confused and apathetic.”
But environmentalists simply went around industry’s Maginot Line of D.C. lobbyists and purchased congressmen.
“The moratorium on new coal [plants] shows that Americans don’t have to wait for Washington to get the country on the right climate track. This campaign has demonstrated we can do this state by state, plant by plant, town by town. Not just that we can do it, but we are doing it.”

Roger Rabbit Commentary: I’ll bet conservative climate-change deniers and coal plant-huggers don’t even know they lost this fight.
(Full Disclosure: Roger Rabbit owns coal stocks and will suffer financially from decreasing use of coal to generate electricity. Well screw Roger Rabbit! If he fails at profiteering from polluters, nobody should feel sorry for him! Public health is more important than his stock speculation profits.)

Ali Soufan, intoduced to us by dumbASS ylb who blew that ASSertion apart Lib the Moron! Feb 13, 1998, Aug 20, 1998 and May 1999 all passed up by Clinton to get bin laden.
From the 9/11 report which described the failings of Clinton people to capture bin laden: “He had been told, he wrote, that cabinet-level officials thought the risk of civilian casualties-“collateral damage”-was too high. They were concerned about the tribals’ safety, and had worried that “the purpose and nature of the operation would be subject to unavoidable misinterpretation and misrepresentation-and probably recriminations-in the event that Bin Ladin, despite our best intentions and efforts, did not survive.” The whole quote!
Another 9/11 Report assertion on Clinton’s bin laden failings: “If this intelligence was not ‘actionable,’ working-level officials said at the time and today, it was hard for them to imagine how any intelligence on Bin Laden in Afghanistan would meet the standard.”

Unfortunately, it costs much less to wage and win a state legislative race, giving the big money guys a lot of easy targets in the forums where many of these battles are waged.
I went to the 36th District Legislative caucus yesterday – even met McDermott! We elected delegates and argued over the platform. I learned that my district – QA, Ballard, Magnolia, Belltown – reliably has the highest or near-highest rates of voting and total votes cast statewide. In 2008 we had 81000+ votes (that went 84% Obama!).
Point is – get involved! Go door-to-door and talk to your neighbors. This is how money is countered – with people. We’ve got to slap down the gay-haters and the Eymans of the world and the other malefactors that puddles and the other trolls around here idolize.

For me there are three levels of wrong in the Trayvon case.
1. Zimmerman killed the kid for no reason.
2. The police department did not investigate because the kid wasn’t important.
3. Florida has a law that allows anyone to kill anyone unimportant and so long as there are not evidence to the contrary, claim self defense and be released scott free.
(4. I guess this will be good for gun sales, cause if a person lived in a kill at will state, they should kill the other person before they killed them, and claim self defense. It will come down to who’s a faster shot, kill first. Nice country the republicans are making. ).

Most government functions are not inherently profitable, and turning those functions over to for-profit companies perverts their basic purpose. There was a time in my life that I didn’t believe in reparations. But now I do. To the extreme!

And furthermore I believe that each black who moves to this new nation should be paid $50,000/year if they live and stay there. If they chose to move back to America, they will lose their yearly payment.
Now, is that racist of me? To want to give black people part of America to call their own, and to pay them yearly reparations?

The Seattle Times printed another of its snarky anti-state-worker editorials today. It’s not like state workers are overpaid — they don’t get to live in bankers’ mansions, drive Porsches, or take European vacations. They work hard at thankless jobs and they are not worth less to society simply because their salaries come from tax money … although the Seattle Times editorial staff seems to think so. I’d like to see Frank Blethen live on a state worker’s salary and benefits for a month. It’s easy for him to bash lowly public servants from the comfort of his den in his $4 million Lake Washington house. This is the same guy who went to the legislative with a tin cup asking to not pay taxes because he doesn’t know how to turn a profit from his own business. Since he doesn’t pay newspaper taxes anymore, why does he care whether state workers get paid a little bit more than minimum wage? Why shouldn’t they? After all, virtually all state jobs require at least a college degree. Blethen’s anti-worker rants make me puke. With regard to the economy – the government needs to spend. It is the buyer of last resort and the primary issue is lack of demand.
How does it get the money? It raises taxes on the wealthy, who are doing rather well right now.
It also borrows, and borrows BIG. Right now money is incredibly cheap, and the US Treasury securities are the most sought, safe instruments on the planet. We can borrow for almost nothing. We should borrow 2 Trillion dollars and BUILD BUILD BUILD.
Bridges, roads, libraries, schools, teachers, trains, wind farms, Solar PV farms. Fully fund schools – pre-K through college.
A $2T investment in both infrastructure, and education and research, would yield a commanding lead in competitiveness relative to our global competitors, and would pay dividends for decades.

Tariffs are attacks and you should only use them in retaliation for someone else’s attack on you and only as a last resort. The proper path is to negotiate fair trade – make deals, not war.
In the past wars have been waged over trade. It’s hard to imagine a shooting war over trade these days but resentment over unfair trade policies can still erupt into something like we saw in the 1930’s – everyone just shutting out our products.
Little maxie the moron asked if I’m for “free trade”. I’m for fair trade. China intervening in the currency markets to keep their currency low in comparison to ours is not free or fair trade. If they’re going to stop doing that, it has to be carefully negotiated away. It has to become apparent to them that it’s in their interest to STOP doing that. The carrots and sticks thing.

True enough. Military hardware, aircraft, cars, heavy equipment, foodstuffs and other sundry finished products. The value of the stuff may be high but the percentage of the work force making it is at its lowest. The growth in jobs over the years has NOT been in manufacturing.
Which happened when corporations picked up and moved out. Deliberate policy on their part to stay “competitive” while shooting their customers and working in this country in the back. Now we’re left with a rapidly aging workforce who might not pass on those skills in tooling and whatnot to a new generation. Just when wage inflation and other factors in Asian countries is driving more work here.
Oil is priced globally. Tariffs will not help this.
Again in many cases these are commodities and are priced globally. Protectionism will only encourage retaliation. By the way, many farm products in this country are subsidized in various ways and this gives our farmers an advantage when they sell into foreign markets. This does not go unnoticed abroad.

In the fifties corporations paid 30+ percent of the federal tax burden and today in good times they pay less than 10 percent and in bad times like now when people are losing jobs and income they pay a SLIGHTLY higher percentage. Not because they are taxed more. If anything they are taxed less.
Why can’t they pay what they paid in the fifties?
Because of their bought and paid for politicians and their lackeys like you.
Something like 45 million folks, 15 percent of people in this country, are on food stamps because their incomes have dropped and they qualify for the assistance.
Corporations moving more and more of their operations to low wage places had nothing to do with that?
Oh and before you blame Obama for the food stamp situation:

I’ll guess you’ll just blame 45 million “lazy” brown skinned people for not working enough of the jobs Obama isn’t creating. Or the jobs Bush didn’t create? Whatever…
Roger Rabbit spews:
Republicans want to cut corporate taxes, but two-thirds of U.S. corporations already pay no corporate income taxes, so how do they plan to cut taxes on companies that aren’t paying any taxes? See, e.g., General Electric …
(Full Disclosure: Roger Rabbit owns hundreds of shares of General Electric — Roger knows a good thing when he sees it. These shares, of course, are held in tax-sheltered accounts; so Roger doesn’t pay any taxes on his General Electric dividends, either. Do I need to explain why Uncle Sam is broke?)
Roger Rabbit spews:
@133 If you want to see freeloaders just go to any meeting of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce or your local Republican Party. Corporatists and their GOP lackeys are the biggest welfare titsuckers in the history of the cosmos.
No Time for Fascists spews:
I say bring on the Tariffs!
I’m in favor of targeted tariffs as part of our economic strategy. However, I see the argument of raising tariffs as a deflection, notice how conservative (some may object to being called a conservative, but until they actually stop posting only conservative thoughts, they are conservative) still cannot bring themselves to think about raise taxes on the wealthy? They are willing impose tariffs that will raise prices on everyone, hurting the low and middle class people the most. But raise taxes? on the wealthy? NEVER!
Bob spews:
@141
Gee, is the reason that so many US corporations pay no corporate tax because they are S Corporations, and the earnings and their tax bill flow through to their 1040, like mine?
Bob spews:
@142
Q: So, if corporations like Exxon and Ford (you don’t distinguish amongst them, so I assume all are similarly bad) are ‘welfare titsuckers’,
what does that make the 47% of the US population that pays no Federal income tax?
A: Obama voters.

– Not paid a living wage.
YLB spews:
I remember back in the day seeing Bob Packwood crow about how many people of limited income were going to be removed from the federal tax rolls with the 1986 tax reform.
And why shouldn’t they? Their payroll taxes had just gone way UP with the passage of the Greenspan commission reforms.
This was used to show how much Republicans cared about the well-being of people of modest income.
Now Republicans call people who are too poor to pay federal income tax (even though they most often pay payroll and many other taxes) “titsuckers” and worse names.
Anything to deflect from rich people paying a much lower rate than their hired help and giant corporations paying a zero or a negative rate.

YLB will do anything to avoid paying taxes, while grabbing all the “free stuff” he can.
