    I don’t know why so many people think that corporations shouldn’t make profits or pay dividends to their shareholders. Thom Hartmann has a bee in his bonnet over this. He reminds me of a guy I used to know who felt that we all should be paid exactly the same regardless of what we do. Under this guy’s idea, the janitor would make as much as the CEO. I don’t see how this would work to the benefit of society. What’s wrong with working hard and making money?

    I love the Cenk clip of Ryan’s suggestion that Obama was somehow deigning to resist Ryan’s preposterous budget proposal, instead of “offering an olive branch.” WTF?!

    The Republicans have been so indulged for so long, it’s really breath-taking, the laziness and sense of entitlement. I hope that (untrue to form) there is some substance and real commitment behind Obama’s speech, and that this new stance isn’t all just part of his 2012 marketing plan, to bring the base back to heel.

    I guess it’s some sign of progress that Obama didn’t surrender everything from the outset.

There seems to be a nihilistic sense of entitlement in neo-conservatism, irresponsibility that of course government is corrupt, that of course politics is all lies; that since government is the problem, it should be mismanaged and exploited to achieve one’s personal, tactical ends, and to hell with the future.

    I’ve not been terribly optimistic about progress at the national level lately, but I guess at least I haven’t lost the expectation that things shouldn’t be as they are.

    29 – It’s only the country’s largest poverty reduction program. It costs maybe less than 50 billion a year which is a drop in the budget bucket and has a reasonable multiplier effect in poor communities everywhere. The working poor eking by on minimum wage jobs are really helped by it.

    What would be “cool” about ending this program? I hope you have something better in mind.

    It doesn’t reduce poverty, it perpetuates it. We’re rewarding people too have kids they can’t afford and not work. Poverty reduction is about a lot more than just money.

    I’d be perfectly happy for my tax dollars to be spent giving people that qualify for EITC a free ride at their local voc-tec or community college so they can get a living wage job and to help people who live in communities where there’s a high unemployment rate and little access to school or jobs* move somewhere with a lower unemployment rate and access to schools.

    *Get your head out of the inner city ghetto, a big chunk of these folks are rural.

    Voc-tec or CC is great, a free ride is even better. I mean going into 6 or 7 grand (at best) in debt to snag a 30k job can certainly be improved upon but over those two years you still have to eat and have a roof over your head and pay the utility bills.

    And to be rooted to where you live is a pretty human impulse just like having kids wouldn’t you say?

    I’d say alternatives are just fine but you need to improve upon the ones you’ve offered so far.

    No, it’s a shitty deal, but it’s still a “reward.” Most people get far below 5K. Not enough to get anyone out of poverty. What it is enough to do is to mess with your Medicaid, which has an income cap of $2K and get your food stamps (or whatever we’re calling that now) lowered for a month or two. That’s why you see poor people buying 42″ TV’s with their checks, they don’t want to be caught holding at the end of the month. The official term for it is a “spend down.”

    But, it’s a great deal for the share holders of H&R Block and other instant refund companies. ;->

    over those two years you still have to eat and have a roof over your head and pay the utility bills.

    A lot of programs are only one or two quarters and if you are in 2 year program I’d still be happy to help with the bills. Pell Grants used to cover more than just the cost of tuition and books.

    I’d say if you live somewhere where there are no jobs, you need to move somewhere where there are jobs. We should be making it easier for people to do this.

    I’ll point out only one. People from Mexico and within China relocate for jobs all the time. That’s a pretty shitty deal for them in general. It’d be a lot nicer if life weren’t so hard for them in the places where they’re from and they didn’t have to be separated from their families, their friends and their relations just so they could survive.

    But we’ll leave it there. I’ve got a load of dishes to wash and a movie I’d like to take in with my kids.

    @28 Most beef cattle are raised in feedlots, so you don’t need (or want) rangeland, what you need is a little bit of acreage somewhere with access to highway and/or rail transportation to bring in calves and feed and ship out cattle; and you also want to buy a frontloader or two to scoop up the shit and load it on trucks to sell as “garden manure”. Getting permits to stink up a whole county won’t be a problem in Florida; that state, after all, is run by Republicans.

    Unless I’m mistaken, Medicaid has a resource cap, not an income cap, of $2K. That means you can have $2,000 in a bank account or own a car worth $2,000 and still qualify for Medicaid. If the income cap were $2K almost no one would qualify for Medicaid. As I recall, the Medicaid income cap is a function of the Federal Poverty Level for a given household size.
