    A little background thanks to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    A year ago there were 153,690,000 in the workforce, this January 153,186,000.
    A year ago there were 15,061,000 unemployed, this January 13,786,000 – source of the 1.3 million Obama cites.
    A year ago 138,628,000 working, this January its 139,399,000 – a gain of 771,000 for the year. Whoops Obama exaggeration number one.

    Exaggeration # 2 and its a doozy.

    According to Bureau of Labor Statistics data 2.3 million people “left the workforce” over the last 12 months ( a million in the last three). for 2009 that number is 1.5 million. That’s 3.8 million missing employable people?
    Other data sources indicate some of them are in school, or university whose institutions are seeing a jump in enrollment.
    A symptom of a bad job market.
    This doesn’t change the bottom line:
    Today the workforce should be 156, 886,000 with 17,586,000 unemployed for an unemployment rate of 11.2% and that’s seasonally adjusted. We should be adding about 190,000 new workers per month instead of losing them.

    Obama replaced the bureaucrat in charge of the BLS in April 2009. Suddenly numbers began to skew, although this is the first instance it’s been so obvious.

    (CNSNews.com) – The federal debt increased by $105.8 billion ($105,835,837,302.32) in January, according to the the U.S. Treasury Department, jumping from $14.0252 trillion ($14,025,215,218,708.52) at the close of business on December 31 to $14.1311 trillion ($14,131,051,056,010.84) at the close of business on January 31.

    That means that in the first four months of fiscal 2011–which began on Oct. 1, 2010–the federal debt has increased by $569.4 billion ($569,428,025,119.05), keeping fiscal 2011 on track to be the second ranking year in U.S. history for an increase in the federal debt.

    So far this year, the government has borrowed an additional 1,844.33 for each of the 308,745,538 people in the United States as counted by the 2010 Census. At the current rate, the federal government this fiscal year would end up borrowing approximately an additional $5,532 for every man, woman and child in the country.

    I wonder what the diplomatic messages between Washington and Cairo look like now. If I were Mubarak, I would be ready to go, and I do not think the Egyptian public is going to have more use for his picked successor, the misnamed Suleiman, spymaster of the Mubarak regime.     There’s a good chance Israel may not survive once this reform movement sweeps through the Islamic World. That’s too bad for Israel, but I think the US should maintain total neutrality in any dispute between Israel and Islam. We’ve done enough damage in the Middle East to last several centuries. Islam, unfortunately, is stuck in the Seventh Century, and there’s nothing we can do to move them out of that time frame. Bad times are ahead for the region, but it’s up to the people that live there to solve their own problems.

    The broadcasters of that ilk are incoherent loons. They gibber, and whine. They wring their hands and make shit up, then argue when they are called on it, making more stories up to support their opinions.

    I came to a conclusion years ago about those folks. Who they appeal to. They preach to the alcoholic set. The elderly people who were told by their doctors to quit drinking or die when they were in their 40’s or 50’s. The folks who are now in their 70’s or 80’s who spent their entire young lives drinking heavily on a daily basis.

    Most folks, when they think about the 1960’s, they think of the hippies, the antiwar movements. Less often they think of the free speech movement or the environmental protection movements, when the Ohio River was catching fire on a weekly basis, and Los Angeles was blanketed in a pale blue haze that was literally so thick you couldn’t see across the street.

    What they don’t think of, is the young folks that came into their adulthood in the late 50’s or early 60’s. During the height of the cold war. The folks that were raised in segregated societies, where the consumption of booze was a major aspect of everything. Cigarettes were advertised on television, including by children’s cartoon characters on saturday morning TV. The daily afternoon cocktail hour was considered normal in the upper middle class. The lunchtime martini was considered normal and acceptable amongst the white collar middle class. It was normal to see dad with a beer in his hand all day during the weekend as he did his work around the house and yard. It was a reflection of their parents upbringing during prohibition, when the newspapers and radio broadcasts were full of stories about Tommy Reina and Al Capone, and later, Ben Moran, Ben Siegel, Jack McGurn, during the crackdowns of the mid and late 1930’s.

    I came to this conclusion on the basis of the fact that most of the teabagger types I’ve met, all seem to be “recovering” alcoholics. Folks in their late 50’s or early to mid 60’s, all hard core rightists who seem to be unable to cope with how the world changed. Their choice of self-medication was alcohol.

    The physical damage done by long-term overconsumption of alcohol is very well documented. What is less well documented and studied, is the psychological damage resulting from that physical damage. The abbreviated thought process that results from the incredible damage done to the synaptic nerves. Whether or not the individual themselves ever drank like that, they learned those thought patterns from their parents who did.

    I wonder what would happen if the entire human race was able to completely stay away from alcohol and chemical drugs for three generations.

    A controversial bill under consideration in Washington’s House of Representatives could roll back some rules designed to protect people from predatory payday lenders.

    House Bill 1678 would repeal a year-old rule that prevents people from taking out more than eight payday loans in 12 months, a move the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Steve Kirby, says is necessary to prevent flight to riskier Internet loans. But anti-poverty advocates say the bill would leave borrowers unprotected.

    @1 No, this isn’t the first time it’s been obvious, not by a longshot. These statistical games have been played by every administration of the last 40 years. Obama didn’t invent this, he’s merely carrying on what all his predecessors did.

    Have you heard of the birth-death index? This has nothing to do with people dying or being born. It refers to the formation (“birth”) and failure (“death”) of businesses. These statistics are extrapolated into employment estimates. Virtually all of the job gains of the Bush era resulted from the birth-death index, and nearly all of those “jobs” were fictional and existed only on paper.

    That’s not the only way BLS juices the employment (and unemployment) statistics. The official figures don’t count unemployed people who drop off unemployment benefits rolls because they’ve exhausted their benefits or stop looking for work because there isn’t any work to look for. These practices make huge numbers of unemployed workers “disappear.” The actual unemployment rate in America is a lot closer to 16% than 9%.

    The government plays similar games with inflation. They don’t even include energy and food prices, the two most inflationary components of the average family’s cost of lving. The statisticians’ argument is these prices are volatile. Yes, but mostly in an upward direction. The government, even as it pumps trainloads of funny money into circulation, tells us we don’t have inflation. They get there by using falling house prices, which for a typical family only serves to make you poorer, to offset increases in prices of things people actually have to buy. Housing prices usually affect you only a couple times during your lifetime; but gasoline and food prices affect you every day. In short, the government’s inflation statistics are as phony as its employment statistics.

    There are several reasons the government understates inflation. They don’t want people to think about how bad it is. They don’t want to attract attention to their inflationary policies. Another important reason for keeping the official inflation rate artificially low is they don’t want to trigger inflation-indexed increases in Social Security benefits that would increase government spending. They also don’t want to trigger inflation-indexed adjustments to tax exemptions and deductions that would decrease government revenues.

    When you say the official statistics are bullshit, I don’t disagree with you. They are bullshit and everybody knows it. But blaming this on Obama is bullshit, too. This is an entrenched and institutionalized system of government lying that has been around for decades. It doesn’t make any difference which party is in power, they all do it, and blaming it on lower-level bureaucrats also is wrong because it is the policymakers who keep this corrupt system in place because if the government told the truth about employment and inflation they would have to do something about it.
