Kharg Island, like Hormuz Strait, is important for the transport of oil out of the Gulf. Seizing it merely keeps Iran from sending oil out of the Gulf, while Iran keeping Hormuz closed keeps everyone else from sending oil out of the Gulf. What you achieve by sending Marines to Kharg Island is that nobody sends any oil out of the Gulf, pushing global oil prices even higher.
