An interesting point… a google search takes almost no compute time once the data has been crawled. Whereas a plagiarism script response will always generate a new answer every time – requiring exponentially more power – compute – externalities than a google search. All of which costs more and therefor lowers profits.
For decades, the holy grail of software was its scalability. Once the code for Excel or Windows was written, the cost of delivering it to the billionth customer was effectively the cost of a few megabytes of bandwidth. This allowed Microsoft to enjoy an “Infinite Leverage” model.
In the plagiarism script era, this leverage evaporates. Every time a user asks Copilot to summarize a meeting or generate a line of code, it triggers a physical event. A cluster of H100 GPUs must draw hundreds of watts of power to run trillions of calculations. You cannot “patch” your way out of the cost of electricity. As usage scales, costs scale linearly—a nightmare for a company used to exponential profit decoupling.
