Wednesday Open Thread

by Carl Ballard — Wednesday, 9/3/25, 8:04 am

Almost called it Monday, but fortunately I corrected it before I hit post so Darryl didn’t have to fix my basic calendar mistake this time. Anyway:

– Trump repealing the roadless rule would be very bad indeed.

– Tacoma Children’s Hospital not doing gender affirming care is gross.

– Seattle can pump the breaks on more surveillance.

– I tried, but I can’t get into men’s soccer in the US. But congrats to the Sounders and booooooo to Inter Miami specifically.

– The people who had to be involved with ICE taking wildland firefighters off of an active fireshould all, at a minimum, lose their jobs.

And of course this is why the process is called Truth and Reconciliation.

When it comes to the sexual exploitation and violent rape of children the GOP buries the truth, leaving victims to suffer for all eternity, while carefully arranging club fed, community release, and pardons for the perpetrators.

I’ll always have this in mind whenever any smug, arrogant, asswipe of a Republican, like the Nazi Fucktard, presumes any kind of superiority, moral or otherwise. On the spectrum of human behavior there is literally nothing worse than the torture of children, morally, ethically, intellectually. And yet it is precisely this that they all now stand behind.

Taking firefighters off an active fire (they were, after all, illegals) is the least of our worries. 22,
While I certainly agree, my point is that with their latest open embrace of defending, protecting and enabling pedophilia they have obviously reached the absolute lowest point morally that is possible for a human being.

There is no more reprehensible conduct for any human than to torture a child in this way. I have a good friend who works closely with child sex offenders. He does the work because he possesses a truly unshakable faith in the basic humanity of every person. And like many of us he believes at least in the potential for our system of justice. But even he has concluded that pedophiles are essentially irredeemable.

And this is what Republicans are allowing themselves to become for the sake of that one man. It’s the worst, most godawful, evil thing a human being can do. And they surely know this. But for power and “winning” they are doing it.

    Great news for the kids:

So how will the national [housing] shortage end?

Right now, too many people are chasing too few homes occupied by the once-largest generation in American history. The “silver tsunami” — the gradual exit of baby boomers from the housing market via downsizing, relocation or death — could significantly narrow the national supply gap. According to a 2024 report from the Mortgage Bankers Association, more than 4 million owner-occupied homes will be vacated by 2030 because of aging. Freddie Mac estimates an even larger wave of 14 million units coming on the market over the next decade.

New construction will add to that. About 1.6 million homes were built last year in the U.S. — a 15.8 percent increase over the previous year. Even if that pace slows to 1.3 million homes annually, about 6.5 million new units could be completed by the end of 2030.

In response to Trump’s tariff escalations, the world’s second-biggest economy retaliated with tariffs on U.S. soybeans, of which last year it imported $13 billion—or about equal to the market cap of John Deere competitor Kubota. Soybean imports to China are down by 51% this year, and the country hasn’t made any advanced soybean purchases for the upcoming harvest, the NYT reported.

If John Deere customers make fewer equipment purchases, the cutback will hit the company’s domestic manufacturing, which makes up 80% of its U.S. sales and a quarter of its international sales.

Jesse Humpal is an Air Force officer and former director for resilience on the National Security Council staff.

Nearly four years ago, President Joe Biden signed the largest infrastructure bill in generations. Yet much of the money is still stuck on paper. Bridges, roads and transmission lines are waiting not on permits or politics but on people. The skilled workers needed to build them, from electricians to welders to dam inspectors, are retiring faster than replacements arrive. Projects are understaffed and over budget before they break ground.

We need a fast, pragmatic fix that honors American labor, protects wages and actually delivers. My proposal is the “iron card,” a “gold card” for the working class. It would be a targeted, service-based pathway that recruits and trains immigrants to fill critical infrastructure jobs while investing in American trainees alongside them. If immigrants swore an oath to serve where assigned, passed background and safety checks, completed five years of verified service on priority projects and kept taxes current, they would be fast-tracked to permanent residency and citizenship…

    Speaking of rights and injustice,

A Minnesota man wrongly convicted of murder who spent nearly three decades in prison after being falsely implicated by a woman who has since confessed to the crime was released Thursday. …

In 1998, a jury convicted Hooper of premeditated murder, felony murder while committing burglary and felony murder while committing kidnapping in connection with the death of 77-year-old Ann Prazniak. His conviction hinged largely on testimony from a woman who authorities say has since confessed to the crime.

    https://www.aol.com/man-freed-nearly-3-decades-191453904.html

It ought to be mind boggling that someone can have their entire life taken away in our courts based on the testimony of a single witness, with no corroborating evidence, but it isn’t because our justice system allows this and it happens all the time.

In this case the victim of wrongful incarceration is, as you might guess, black. That apparently makes it easier to tromp on their supposed rights, because black people are disproportionately on the getting end of these injustices.

There’s too much guesswork and quackery in criminal trials. Jurors need to be more demanding of what constitutes sufficient proof of guilt.

69)One short extension funded under ST3 already opened, another in the fall. Federal Way, at least Angle Lake to roughly S272nd St is ST2, Federal Way portion of the extension is ST3. Waiting to see how Sound Transit starts phasing out 570 and 590 series routes, although 595 should not exist, Gig Harbor isn’t in the district, ST only got it because 590, 592, and 594 had it as a package deal, acquired from Pierce Transit. 574 Sea Tac-Lakewood can be cut back to a Federal Way-Lakewood routing. 577 is a Federal Way-Seattle Express, it should be gone. 578 Puyallup-Federal Way-Seattle, could be a Puyallup-Federal Way routing. These bus routes under ST have always been place holders for future rail lines.

One debate I often see is the permanence of rail routes that survive. Some bus routes are unchanged from streetcar days in many cities, while other bus routes prove rail is better. Found this map of the old system, circa 1939, many of the routes are relatively the same, others not so much. Two South Seattle lines, both buses, are a good example. Empire Way Bus, started by Seattle Municipal Railway in the 1920s, became Seattle Transit’s 42-Empire Way, later Metro’s 42-Empire Way giving way to 42-MLK, the portion from Downtown remained the same until the route was discontinued in 2009 and replaced by a crosstown route, but a few lobbied Metro and forced them to re-route the 106, so it was still a loss for that group, they wanted the 42 restored. Now a route that changed multiple times is the Seward Park Bus, only thing consistent with it was the portion between 50th Ave S and the Park, that other line on 50th was a legacy of the Seattle and Rainier Valley’s branch line, called the Genessee Dinky. Separate operator, city took it over with a bus when SRV shut down in 1937.

Hoping Metro Employees Historic Vehicle Association has Metropolitan Transit Co 2962 at the opening for FWLE. Always think the past needs to be represented. Same coach was at the initial opening of LINK back in 2009. Same organization has a couple Seattle Municipal Vehicles, but low priority for restoration, 2 buses including a locally built Kenworth, and a Streetcar. The latter, nowhere to run, the buses, well the Kenworth needs a lot of work, after Seattle Transit withdrew it from revenue service, it became the vault at one of the bus barns, although the axles were re-installed to get it to Tukwilla.

They knew everything there was to know about Epstein, but now, years after his death, they, out of nowhere, are seeming to show such love and heartfelt concern for his victims. Does anybody really believe that? Where were they during his very public trials, and for all of those years before his death? The answer is, “nowhere to be found.” The now dying (after the DOJ gave thousands of pages of documents in full compliance with a very comprehensive and exacting Subpoena from Congress!) Epstein case was only brought back to life by the Radical Left Democrats because they are doing so poorly, with the lowest poll numbers in the history of the Party (16%), while the Republicans are doing so well, among the highest approval numbers the Party has ever had! The Dems don’t care about the victims, as proven by the fact that they never did before. This is merely another Democrat HOAX, just like Russia, Russia, Russia, and all of the others, in order to deflect and distract from the great success of a Republican President, and the record setting failure of the previous Administration, and the Democrat Party.

If the SEALs were unsure whether the mission had been compromised before they fired, they had no doubt afterward. The plan required the SEALs to abort immediately if they encountered anyone. North Korean security forces could be coming. There was no time to plant the device.
The shore team swam to the boat to make sure that all of the North Koreans were dead. They found no guns or uniforms. Evidence suggested that the crew, which people briefed on the mission said numbered two or three people, had been civilians diving for shellfish. All were dead, including the man in the water.
Officials familiar with the mission said the SEALs pulled the bodies into the water to hide them from the North Korean authorities. One added that the SEALs punctured the boat crew’s lungs with knives to make sure their bodies would sink.
