“The David Goldstein Show” tonight on Newsradio 710-KIRO

by Goldy — Sunday, 8/6/06, 5:04 pm

Are you feeling a bit dizzy from watching the hydroplanes spin round and round, or from craning your necks to catch a glimpse of the Blue Angels soaring by, or simply from a weekend of too much sun and too much beer? Then turn down the lights, turn up the radio and tune in to “The David Goldstein Show tonight on Newsradio 710-KIRO, from 7PM to 10PM.

7PM: Is centrism for suckers? That’s the opinion of New York Times columnist Paul Krugman who wrote this week that, in this age of ruthless partisanship, the most important thing you need to know about a candidate is whether there’s a “D” or an “R” next to their name. And speaking of partisanship, I’m going to talk a little bit about my role in the shareholder lawsuit against Mike!™ McGavick, and why it says absolutely nothing at all about the merits of the case itself.

8PM: Hey… there are a couple congressional races East of the mountains too. Who knew? Spokane blogger Gerald Toompas of EWpolitics.com joins me to talk about some surprising poll numbers in the 5th CD race between incumbent Republican Rep. Cathy McMorris and Democratic challenger Peter Goldmark, while Tri-Cities blogger Jim McCabe of McCranium.org calls in to complain about his local media’s refusal to admit that Rep. “Do Nothin’ Doc” Hastings even has a Democratic challenger. Then in the second half of the hour I’ll be heading back west with long time (and disgruntled) conservative Republican activist Phil Spackman, who’s gonna tell us exactly what’s wrong with the WA state and King County GOP.

9PM: What’s the right-wing, Christian Evangelical extremist perspective on state and national politics? Gen. JC Christian, Patriot, joins me to discuss the most important issues of the day, including Intelligent Design, stem cell research, the Iraq war and of course… The Passion of the Mel Gibson. “The General” blogs at the nationally renowned Jesus’ General, which bills itself as “The Official Online Organ of the Glorious Conservative Christian Cultural Revolution.” And a very manly organ it is.

Tune in tonight (or listen to the live stream) and give me a call: 1-877-710-KIRO (5476).

    Exclusive.

Was the Jew killer a conservative or liberal. In the Seattle Times we have the following quote:

Haq’s friend said he couldn’t believe the timid, “geeky” man he knew from the tutoring center was capable of such violence.

“Are you sure we’re talking about the same person?” he said Sunday………….

He said Haq was not a devout Muslim and often complained that the Tri-Cities were too politically conservative.

“I’m beginning to think I was his only friend in the Tri-Cities. I don’t recall him hanging out with anybody else.”

Now for the other side we turn to Goldy’s story from last week:

    Psssssssssstttttttt…….

Ah it looks like the story was all a bunch of hot air. Well there you have it. Enjoy all you Nazi Libs.

Hey Goldy are you going to talk about this on the air. Somehow I doubt it. Hehe

Goldy: You are right, your involvement has no bearing on the legal merits of the case aginst McGavick. But your radio listeners aren’t deciding the legal case against McGavick, so that doesn’t matter, now, does it?

Your radio listeners are deciding the merits of the political case that this lawsuit indicates McGavick wouldn’t be a good senator. Does the fact that the lawsuit was encouraged and shepherded along by a bunch of political hacks like yourself have any bearing on the merits of that case? Absolutely.

  4. Goldy spews:

David… the local media ignores the ethical and legal implications of McGavick’s compensation package, so is it wrong for partisans like me to want to draw some attention to it so that voters can be full informed? If I don’t do it, who will?

That said, my role was minor, but call in, and we’ll have a go at it: 877-710-KIRO

I’m not a fan of an “anything goes” comments section, but there is one way that it could be quite informative (and entertaining).

What if Goldy found a few psychologists, linguists, and logic experts to “deconstruct” some of the choice diatribes of the trolls who participate here. Various gambits and pathological patterns could be named. The resulting write-up could be kept posted in an accessible place, where it could be used as a handy reference guide for non-trolls.

Why bother? Sure, the regular “lefties” critique the trolls all the time, but the most powerful analysis tends to get lost amidst the cuss words and threats of adultery. Such taunts can be funny, but it does lack a certain air of sophistication. Adolescent attacks can be written off as, well, adolescent.

In the absence of ranked comments threads, it is time to fight fire with . . . knowledge.

SUSPECTED gunman William Edney picked the wrong vehicle to carjack Thursday morning, paying with his blood for the poor decision, police said.

Edney, 23, watched as his bounty, a wine-colored 2004 Ford Expedition, pulled up to a rowhouse on Larchwood Avenue near 58th Street, West Philadelphia, about 6:15 a.m.

A seemingly easy target, a senior citizen with a slow gait, climbed out of the SUV.

Edney clutched a 9 mm handgun and crept up to the senior, whispering, “Don’t do anything funny,” police later said.

The elderly man, George Newton, 78, unhesitatingly handed him the keys. Edney hopped into the driver’s seat still holding the gun in his right hand, Newton told the Daily News yesterday, while sitting on the stoop of his West Philadelphia rowhouse.

Newton said he watched as Edney struggled to hold the gun and shift gears with the same hand. Newton said he seized the opportunity, and pulled out his revolver, firing one shot into Edney’s jaw.

Edney drove off, but Newton “came around to the driver’s side and shot him again,” striking him in the shoulder, police said.

“Both windows were down so I didn’t mess up any of my glass,” Newton said. […………………………………………………………………….Looks like on less Democrat vote in Phiily, unless felons get to vote from prison.]

Saying that his accepting a $28M golden parachute should make voters look askance at McGavick is fine. Saying that the lawsuit should make voters look askance at McGavick, when you had a hand in bringing it, is not fine. (If you had given McGavick the $28M, and then complained about his having it, people wouldn’t regard that as a legitimate criticism either.)

To stay credible, I suggest you talk about the $28M, and how you think that is wrong regardless of its legality, instead of about the lawsuit you helped bring.

    Reuters admits altering Beirut photo

Reuters withdraws photograph of Beirut after Air Force attack after US blogs, photographers point out ‘blatant evidence of manipulation.’ Reuters’ head of PR says in response, ‘Reuters has suspended photographer until investigations are completed into changes made to photograph.’ Photographer who sent altered image is same Reuters photographer behind many of images from Qana, which have also been subject of suspicions for being staged
    Yaakov Lappin

A Reuters photograph of smoke rising from buildings in Beirut has been withdrawn after coming under attack by American web logs. The blogs accused Reuters of distorting the photograph to include more smoke and damage.

The photograph showed two very heavy plumes of black smoke billowing from buildings in Beirut after an Air Force attack on the Lebanese capital. Reuters has since withdrawn the photograph from its website, along a message admitting that the image was distorted, and an apology to editors.

You’re not a lawyer, are you? You don’t know a damn thing about shareholder suits. You only need to own 1 share in the company (during the relevant time period) to have standing to sue. WHY you sue is irrelevant, and any testimony to the effect the lawsuit is politically motivated wouldn’t even be admissible. The question is whether McGavick breached a fiduciary duty to the shareholders by sticking his hand in the till.

Not to be overlooked is the quintessential Republican, LOW TAX LOOPER:

“Looper … became a staunch conservative Republican. He lost a race for the state house in 1994, but in 1996 … was backed by the Tennessee Republican Party in a race for the technically nonpartisan post of Putnam County Tax Assessor, which he won.

“He was the first Republican elected official at any level in Putnam County in over a century. As tax assessor, Looper … failed repeatedly to file property tax valuations with the state government on time … charges were made that Looper offered reduced tax assessments to local businesses in exchange for large political contributions …. Later, an ex-girlfriend sued him for … fraud, charging he had used his official position to steal her house. In March of 1998, Looper was indicted on 14 counts of official misconduct, theft of services and official oppression. Looper claimed the charges were politically motivated ….

“The Tennessee Republican Party soon claimed no connection with Looper, though campaign contributions and lists of paid political consultants proved otherwise. In 1998, Looper sought the Republican nominations for the 6th Congressional District of Tennessee and the Tennessee State Senate in the same primary. He lost the Congressional nomination to a candidate who was not under indictment … finishing last in a field of four. He won the state senate nomination by default, however, as he was the only Republican candidate on the ballot. This set up his campaign against … incumbent Democratic state senator Tommy Burks.

“Burks had represented Putnam County in the state legislature for 28 years — eight in the State House and 20 in the State Senate. He was … a farmer who was popular in his district. The 1998 election looked to be as quiet as his previous nine. … On the morning of October 19, authorities were called to investigate a likely murder at the Burks farm. Tommy Burks’ body was found with his head resting on the steering wheel of his pickup truck … authorities immediately began a standard homicide investigation but could find no one with any plausible reason to murder Burks. Then (a witness) called Burks’ widow, Charlotte, after seeing a picture of Looper on television, and told her that Looper was the man he’d seen speeding away … the morning of the murder.

Looper … made it to Hot Springs, Arkansas, where he met with a friend, Marine recruiter Joe Bond … talking a great deal about how he had murdered his Senate opponent … Looper was arraigned at a hearing that featured Bond as a surprise witness for the state. … The trial finally occurred in 2000. By this time, inmate road crews had found the weapon apparently used by Looper to commit the murder … (and) two political consultants … reported having been contacted at various times by Looper, who told both of them that he … felt the surest way to win would be to murder the opponent. …

“Looper had done some homework. An obscure Tennessee state law required that a candidate’s name be removed from the ballot and not replaced if he died within 30 days of the election. … Looper’s name therefore was the only one listed on the ballot, and for a few days it looked like he would win by default. … On election day, Charlotte Burks, as a write-in candidate, won the seat with 30,252 votes compared to Looper’s 1,531 votes … Charlotte Burks remains a popular member of the State Senate.”

Note: Low Tax Looper is serving life without parole at Brushy Mountain Penitentiary. His defense attorney, in his opening statement, told the jury, “He was the first Republican elected in Putnam County, and he made quite a name for himself ….”

In the last year, 15 states have enacted laws that expand the right of self-defense, allowing crime victims to use deadly force in situations that might formerly have subjected them to prosecution for murder. Supporters call them ”stand your ground” laws. Opponents call them ”shoot first” laws. /break/ The Florida law, which served as a model for the others, gives people the right to use deadly force against intruders entering their homes. They no longer need to prove that they feared for their safety, only that the person they killed had intruded unlawfully and forcefully.

Personal crimes rise dramatically in areas that preclude self-defense (self-defense free zones).

Cities like Chicago, LA, Boston, Washington DC, Baltimore, etc are liberal cesspools that through failed anti-gun social engineering create safe operating environments for criminals.

Creating a safe operating environment for criminals breeds a constant crop of “victims” which in turn keeps the field of potential voters ripe for the democratic picking.

BREAKING NEWS: U.S. LOSES PRUDHOE BAY OIL PRODUCTION BECAUSE OF CORRODED PIPELINE

British Petroleum announced tonight it is shutting down Prudhoe Bay oil production because of pipeline corrosion. The U.S. is expected to lose 8% of domestic production indefinitely. A Japanese analyst said the shutdown could cause world oil prices to rise $10 a barrel.

  49. Roger Rabbit spews:

    The Associated Press reports tonight,

“In a sudden blow to the nation’s oil supply, half the production on Alaska’s North Slope was being shut down Sunday after BP Exploration Alaska, Inc. discovered severe corrosion in a Prudhoe Bay oil transit line.

“BP officials said they didn’t know how long the Prudhoe Bay field would be off line. ‘I don’t even know how long it’s going to take to shut it down,’ said Tom Williams, BP’s senior tax and royalty counsel.

“Once the field is shut down, in a process expected to take days, BP said oil production will be reduced by 400,000 barrels a day. That’s close to 8 percent of U.S. oil production as of May 2006 or about 2.6 percent of U.S. supply including imports, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

    …

“A 400,000-barrel per day reduction in output would have a major impact on oil prices, said Tetsu Emori, chief commodities strategist at Mitsui Bussan Futures in Tokyo. ‘Oil prices could increase by as much as $10 per barrel given the current environment,’ Emori said.”

Faced with having to put my own money into a race I was sure to lose, I’ll take “retirement” instead. I won’t resign, either, I still have a few months to sell my votes to special interest groups in order to guarantee my comfortable retirement, or my next career as an industry lobbyist”.

RR at 45: “Note: Low Tax Looper is serving life without parole at Brushy Mountain Penitentiary.”

I’ve visited quite a few prisons, and I once visited Brushy Mountain State Prison as part of a class project. It has to rank as the most depressing prison I ever saw. One side of the prison isn’t even a wall – it’s a high cliff which would be very difficult (but not impossible) to climb.

It wasn’t that big, but everyone there had life terms or its equivilent, so there was no attempt to “rehabilitate” the inmates. They were just warehoused there until they died. They got up, ate, spent a couple of hours in the central courtyard staring into space, maybe visited the law library, ate again, repeat process, then go to bed.

Gee, maybe its needed, maybe not, maybe they were negligent for allowing it to get so rusted before they did ongoing maintenance. But for some reason, all I can hear is that telephone recording of the Enron folks, telling the nuclear plant operators to find a reason to shut down for “maintenance” issues, in the midst of California brown-outs.

But as RR said, the problem is that although many may be damaged by the apparant Safeco political donation, only stockholders would have the legal standing to bring a lawsuit to compel the directors to answer the relevent question: “What, if anything, did Safeco buy from Mike McGavick for 28 million? This is similar to the problem faced for years by environmental groups, compelling Justice Douglas to ask whether trees were the only ones with legal standing to sue for pollution which threatens to kill them?

If not for the lawsuit, Safeco and McGavick could avoid answer this important question until long after the election. The stockholder derivative lawsuit may compel him to answer, under oath, in advance.

Mike? Who is the problem, not the solution. While putting $28 million of the shareholders’ money into his own pocket, as a US Senator, he would turn around and vote for the CHEAP LABOR CONSERVATIVE agenda to steal tips from $7.36-an-hour waitresses! He would vote to put unintelligent bullshit in our public schools. He would vote for the corruption and incompetence of the Bush administration. He would vote for government spying on citizens whose only “crime” is to oppose the criminal Bush administration. This guy would rubberstamp the neoCON fascist agenda all the way down the line.

    Here you go:

At least two non-citizens voted in King County in November, according to county records.

Chun C Chen of 7th Ave NE, Seattle
    and
Ming Y Anderson of 6th Ave S, Seattle

are listed in the Dec. 29 and Jan. 7 versions of the voter database as permanent absentee voters, credited with voting absentee in November 2004.

They are also listed in the cancelled registrations file (which I obtained today pursuant to my public records request) as having their registrations cancelled earlier in 2005 with reason code “NOT A US CITIZEN”. Two other individuals have had their registrations cancelled since Nov. 1, 2004 for the same reason, but were not credited with voting.

Ming Y Anderson is also credited with voting in the September 2004 primary, the February 2004 special election for the Seattle School District Levy and the November 2003 general election.

Non-citizens are even harder to identify than felons and dead people as there don’t seem to be readily accessible databases with citizenship or immigration status data. But one suspects these two cases are just the tiny tip of a large iceberg.

Yet another bit of Nazi liberal propaganda crushed.

The 2000 election marks the first time Asian exit polls are firmly on the side of the Democratic presidential candidate … Asians are generally the most Conservative …. It’s not a myth — even in cities where Asians are overwhelmingly Democratic, they are less so than whites ….
