Tune in for another jam-packed “The David Goldstein Show” — Newsradio 710-KIRO, from 7PM to 10PM. Here’s the line-up, but as always, things could change depending on breaking news and guest availability.
7PM: Can Democrats win big in red state America? Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer of Montana joins me to discuss his own successful efforts to lead Democrats into the majority… and govern. With one of the highest net approval ratings in the nation, I’m guessing we have something to learn from Gov. Schweitzer. I particularly want to talk to Gov. Schweitzer about how he got out in front of state Republicans in issues of taxation, instead of just being reactive like WA Dems tend to be.
8PM: When the state Supreme Court upheld Washington’s Defense of Marriage Act this week, who exactly were they defending marriage from? Why, the gays, of course, especially The Stranger’s Dan Savage, who joins me in the studio to discuss the impact and fallout from the court’s decision. Is Dan’s long term, loving relationship and happy, healthy son a threat to your marriage? If so, give us a call and let him know.
9PM: Was Friday’s shooting at the Jewish Federation of Seattle a hate crime? An act of terrorism? Or just another example of a centuries old history of Islamic Christian violence? I’m opening the lines to discuss this and other current events. (Whad’ya bet I talk a little bit about Tim Eyman failing to qualify I-917 for the ballot?)
Tune in tonight (or listen to the live stream) and give me a call: 1-877-710-KIRO (5476).
oh boy here read this http://www.sp-usa.org/
I like that Montana Gov. Dude he’s groovy man

A day after the mayor begged gun-toting thugs of all ages to “take a deep breath” before squeezing another trigger, three more people were shot to death in the city. The murders brought the city’s homicide total to 229 for the year, compared to 208 at this same point last year. [Philly, The Perfect Democrat City!! Not a Republican around for miles!! hehe, JCH]

Somehow you found a way to blame christians for the Islamo-hatred of Jews violence this past week?
Why are libs constantly excusing Islamofascist terrorism??
Re: the shooting incident…
I had a history teacher in high school who told us that there are three categories of people who make history: the strong, the brave and the sick.
I don’t see that Mr. Haq belongs to either of the first two.
He is not sick. He needs to be punished to the full extent of the law. I realize that is a stretch for the nannies in this state who will bust their asses trying to heal him, but leave him alone and let him stand trial. It is time for him to find out if Allah really has 72 virgins waiting for his dumb ass.

Los Angeles – Jewish groups have demanded Mel Gibson be investigated for hate crimes after the Hollywood star allegedly made anti-Semitic comments to US police officers when he was stopped on suspicion of drink-driving and speeding. /break/ Calling for a criminal investigation into the Oscar-winning actor and director’s remarks, Abraham Foxman, the national director of the US Jewish Anti-Defamation League, said: ”We believe there should be consequences to bigots and bigotry.” […………………………………………………………………………………..Fair enoungh, but I must have missed the “hate crime” investigation of Hillary against Dick Morris. Nice show Goldy. I know you are busy but any progress on moving over to a system that can improve the signal noise?
I wonder what the Anti-Defamation League would say about the thread below this one. You know the one that trivilizes the Terrorist Attack in Seattle by claiming the shooter was a Christian instead of a Muslim……….
sgmmac @ 25
Consider reading the previous post again…read it very slowly. There is nothing trivialized about the killing in it. I sincerely doubt the Anti-Defamation League would have any problems with my post. (I mean, they probably have a reading comprehension beyond the sixth grade….)
You are correct in that the killer was culturally Muslim. But he was spiritually Christian as witnessed by the fact that he had convert to Christianity last year and was baptized last December. Those are undisputable facts.
The post was almost entirely a satirical mocking of the Wingnut reaction to this incident, even before anyone knew anything about the spiritual life of Mr. Haq. It was not a reaction to the incident itself. And, in case it was not obvious from your second reading of the post, I reject the notion that this was either an act of Islamic or Christian terrorism.
I hope this little guided tour helps!
#29: It seems Mr. Haq did a lot of back-and-forth. His father helped found an Islamic center in Kennewick, at one point last year Haq converted to Christianity, but several months ago appeared to drop away from the church. He was an engineer who couldn’t keep a job. Sounds to me like a very troubled man – at the same time rebelling from his father and trying to please him, too.
I sincerely doubt religion, of any stripe, explains or motivates his actions. It sounds like a fundamentally troubled man who was trying to get attention from his father. If convicted, he will probably spend the rest of his life in jail trying to sort himself out.
Darryl,
Haq was NOT a Christian. Because he got baptized and attended a Christian Church doesn’t make him a Christian. He said he was a Muslim. To assume that he was trying to blame it on Muslims is stretching it a bit. He was raised Muslim and he is what he believes he is, not what you, me, or anyone believes he is.
Does he have troubles – probably. The same problems that you, me and Boo across the street have. It is not uncommon for people who are unhappy with their lives to look for God, sex, or anything that they think will make their lives complete. Some people are totally compulsive with buying new “toys.”
There are many Christian Terrorists in the world today, this guy just isn’t one of them. I consider some of the extreme far-right guys potential terrorists. There isn’t any difference in a far-right Christian screaming looney and a screaming looney Imam preaching death and destruction to anyone who isn’t converted to their “brand” of religion. The Irish have Christian terrorists.
When you use the fact that he was exploring Christianity as a point to “slam” the religious right to get in your political points, you are in fact trivalizing the fact that Jewish people have been persecuted and targeted for extermination for centuries. It also glosses over the hatred that the Jewish people have to put up with on a DAILY basis.
Look at what Mel Gibson did, he is a fundamentalist Catholic and many of them blame the Jewish people for the death of Jesus. We are talking right now, today, 21st Century , those ideas are still out there……….lurking. Your story fed into those basic beliefs and attitudes, rather than expose them for what they are.
Have a Great Day!
Why the christian backlash here? In fact why can’t people call this what it really was: a mentally ill guy who snapped. Yes I agree that the media sometimes generalizes when Muslims are involved, but how does casting this guy as a “Christian” work?
If you believe that the media made a mistake in calling Haq a “Muslim American” and you suggest we should smear him as a “Christian American” instead, then you’ve descended into a pit of hypocrisy that you’re in danger of never climbing out of. If as a “progressive” you want to seize the moral high ground, this really is not the way to go about it. I’m all for calling a spade a spade with respect to Christians in America and their foibles, but I’m not ready to surrender my own morality to do so.
The Christians are all deciding for us who is Christian and who is not when their own God clearly states it’s not up to them. More Christian hypocrisy.
Haq was NOT a Christian. Because he got baptized and attended a Christian Church doesn’t make him a Christian. He said he was a Muslim.”
Yes…in fact, he is a Christian. Last December he publicly affirmed that fact through renouncing Islam and being Baptized in a community ceremony. A witness reported that Haq said he was Muslim-American, but…um…he was also shooting people at the time!
To assume that he was trying to blame it on Muslims is stretching it a bit.
Rrrright. But I wasn’t seriously proposing that he was trying to blaspheme Islam. The fact that you even suggest this indicates that you didn’t understand the post. (I blame myself—the satire is presented somewhat dead-pan; I usually write this type of material for my own blog or Jesus’ General where readers expect satire.)
Does he have troubles – probably. The same problems that you, me and Boo across the street have.
Well, I don’t know about you, but Boo and I have not been treated for mental illness for 10 years; nor, medicated for mental illness. Additionally, Boo and I have yet to go to a mall, climb down into a coin fountain, and expose ourselves to young women.
There are many Christian Terrorists in the world today, this guy just isn’t one of them.
I completely agree with you. But, I would go farther and claim that he isn’t an Islamic Terrorist either.
When you use the fact that he was exploring Christianity as a point to “slam” the religious right to get in your political points, you are in fact trivalizing the fact that Jewish people have been persecuted and targeted for extermination for centuries.
Ummm…he wasn’t “exploring” Christianity. He, factually, was a Christian. But, in any case, my post was not a slam to the religious right, per se. It was a slam to the reaction in the right-leaning political blogosphere’s reaction. While it is possible that I am in some way trivializing the Jewish experience, I don’t really think you understand enough of what I wrote to be able to make a definitive statement about it.
Mel Gibson is a bigot (and possibly a drunk). I find it interesting that you could somehow read my post as feeding Jewish bigotry. After posting on HA, I wrote a non-satirical follow-up on my blog. That might help you understand the points I was making.
38 – You must be pretty new here. Darryl was satirizing the mentality of the wingnuts that come here to test their broken ideology.
The knee-jerk bigotry of the wingnuts came out clearly. When a crime is committed by person with a muslim background, first they shout “Terror” and then they shout “Arab”. They played according to their conditioning script.
The shooter was a Pakistani with not a drop of Arab blood and to top it all off he wasn’t even a muslim in a strict sense. No devout muslim would consider a person baptized in a Christian Church as muslim and many devout Christians would recognize that he took a crucial step in abandoning Islam by being baptized.
As you said the shooter was probably mentally ill and apparently had no ties to any organized terror group.
Cow @38 It was a satire. As Darryl says above he was making fun of those folks who were ready to jump up and down screaming about Muslims (see above) when the guy was actually a Christian.
You took him wrong – he was making fun of the reaction, not seriously suggesting anyone smear Christians.
Sorry sarge, but if being baptized a Christian and attending a Christian church does not make you a Christian, then either you have a direct line to God or you are talking out of your ass. I am leaning in one direction here….
Why are you going through such BS to try and prove that a baptized and church-going Christian was not a Christian? Maybe that simple little Fox News world isn’t so simple? Nah… that couldn’t be it.
Cowpitpi3
In fact why can’t people call this what it really was: a mentally ill guy who snapped.
That works for me!
Yes I agree that the media sometimes generalizes when Muslims are involved, but how does casting this guy as a “Christian” work?
There was no “casting” involved. He is a Christian. Not that I think that had anything to do with his actions directly, mind you…. I mean, renouncing Islam and adoption of Christianity probably contributed to his feelings of isolation from and diaappointment to his family. And, he may not have found in Christianity what he though he would find. That may have contributed dissonance to his life. But this guy had a lot of problems.
If you believe that the media made a mistake in calling Haq a “Muslim American” and you suggest we should smear him as a “Christian American” instead, then you’ve descended into a pit of hypocrisy that you’re in danger of never climbing out of.
Yes…indeed. But if I were seriously calling for suspicious Christians to be rounded up and put into internment camps in New Mexico, I would already be past that point, wouldn’t I?
If as a “progressive” you want to seize the moral high ground, this really is not the way to go about it.
Apparently, you did not catch the satirical nature of the post. I ask that you read the post again…carefully. Alternatively, check out my follow-up post (click on my name).
How could this possibly be? AQter all, the evil neocons are supposed to be suppressing dissent in every form according to the liberal intelligentsia. Yet this blog is still here, Goldstein is still on the radio.
Do you crazy liberals know how silly you look when you make such stupid accusations? You complain that free speech is being curtailed, yet Goldstein has his own radio show. Regular Americans see right through that hypocrisy.
I have a modest proposal. . . .
pbj
Just wondering: What do “regular Americans” make of the so-called “free-speech zones” that anti-Bush protesters are often shunted into when the President makes a public appearance? Pro-Bush supporters are not shunted into such zones, but dissenters often get fenced off in officially sanctioned protest areas that are usually a considerable distance from the actual appearance site? Does such inequality of access constitute a limiting of the right of assembly and freedom of expression?
I am so glad that I found you on KIRO. I gave up on them last January when all my fav hosts seem to disappear. Just by accident I heard you last night, and now they have me back for at least one night a week. Glad to find you and your blog. LOVE IT.
Nindid,
Haq is a Muslim and attended Friday prayers at his Mosque two weeks ago. Most Christians believe that you have to accept Jesus into your heart and accept him as your savior before you are considered a Christian. Being Baptized is merely a symbolic ritual of washing away one’s sins. It certainly doesn’t make you a Christian, unless you believe it. Normally you have also done other things for atonement before the Baptism.
I did read Darryl’s article on his blog and I liked it a lot better.
Right now, the minimum wage is $5.15 an hour. Except for workers who rely on tips, this is the least amount of money an employer is allowed to pay somebody they have employed legally. The argument that is always trotted out for raising it is that this is not a “living wage.” How is a single mother supposed to raise a family on $5.15 an hour? That’s what we always hear from politicians. With that in mind, it’s time for some insensitivity training when it comes to the minimum wage.
First of all, if you are trying to raise a family on $5.15 an hour, you are a loser. Entry-level jobs that pay minimum wage are not meant for somebody trying to raise a family. They’re meant for kids in school or adults with minimum job skills. Basically people trying to get out and earn a little extra money. It’s not meant to support a family. If you have kids and $5.15 an hour is the best you can do, it is your own fault that you brought those kids into this world without the means to provide for them.
It is not the job of an employer to step in and cover for the irresponsibility of some fool that thinks they can raise a family without any job skills.
Second, what happens when the minimum wage is raised? Prices for the goods and services provided by those workers rise right along with their wages. If a restaurant employs 10 people at $5.15 an hour and the minimum wage goes up to $6, then guess what? That means the hourly labor costs of that restaurant just went up $8.50. Either some people are fired or the prices go up. That’s how it works.
There is one more argument the left never seems to be able to counter. Why raise the minimum wage to only $6 or $7 an hour? Why not $10? $12? Surely it takes at least $20 an hour to raise a family, so why not make the minimum wage $20 an hour? Just think of all the people we could lift out of poverty if we were to raise the minimum wage to $20 … or even more? If any of you are successful in getting an answer to that question, let me know.
Another question — why won’t the media explain the union connection to all of this? Many union contracts out there have a clause in them that ties minimum union wages to an index based on the minimum wage. When the minimum wage goes up … so do these union wages. Now you understand why unions are behind this increase.
Oh .. one more thing. I’m still looking in our Constitution for some provision that allows the Imperial Federal Government to set wages between private employers and private employees. Can’t find it.
sgmmac @ 49
“Most Christians believe that you have to accept Jesus into your heart and accept him as your savior before you are considered a Christian. Being Baptized is merely a symbolic ritual of washing away one’s sins.”
Baptism is much more than a symbolic ritual….While the meaning and interpretation of Baptism differs among denominations, many denominations read literally Mark 16:16 quoting Jesus, “He who believes and is baptized will be saved.”
Typically, denominations that practice adult Baptism require some period of self-study, group study, meetings with a pastor, and some mastery of the principles of the religion and the denomination prior to the Baptism (not unlike the work required prior to “confirmation” in Catholic or mainstream Lutheran churches).
BTW: when I visit my parents, I sometimes visit their church with them. It doesn’t mean I embrace their particular religion/denomination. So I don’t take too much from the observation that Haq recently attended his parent’s Mosque once. His visit is even less surprising, given that he was rapidly reaching a crisis in his personal life. There is no evidence that he rescinded his renouncement Islam as his religion.
So, sgmmac, do you really believe that he was acting as an Islamic terrorist? Do you think he was part of a terrorist cell? Was he training for this as a mission? Was he studying Islamic extremism? Do you believe he premeditated his actions and systematically and calmly undertook his murder spree as a mission? Do you believe he was doing it in the name of Allah?
Or, were the injustices he perceived in the Middle East more akin to the straw that broke the camel’s back?
Darryl,
I’ve been to many different churches, but that doesn’t make me religious. It is what each individual feels. That said, this boy was raised Muslim. When you are raised in a very religious family, the religion molds you into who and what you are. It is very hard for people to break away from their culture, their environment, their family values, their history. It is worse with the more extreme religions. When the violence erupted, he took it personally because he identifies himself as a Muslim.
Do I think he is part of a group, no, I don’t think so. I don’t know about the training, that is a possibility. It is interesting that the pregnant woman was shot in the arm and the others in the stomach. It isn’t abnormal for people who own guns – to train with them.
If his father is/was involved, we might well be fucked, because he works at Hanford. Did he calmly plan this as a mission? Yes, he did. He went and got the guns, the ammo and searched for a site that would have a large congregation of Jewish people. How many days after Al Zawhiri’s tape was this? I have no idea if he was studying radical Islamic teachings, but it wouldn’t surprise me. He was obviously looking for something and to somehow fit into this big world of ours. He sounds like he fits the profile of a rampaging killer.
He is not crazy though, he needs to grow up and accept responsibility for his actions and his decisions. He highly deserves to be tried as a capital murderer.
Shorter sgmmac: You can take the man out of Islam, but you can never take Islam out of the man. So this dude is completely responsible for his actions as an individual, but we just have to take a shot at Islam while we’re at it? It would save a lot of time if you’d quit rationalizing and just come out and say it: “I am an anti-Islamic bigot.”
