“The David Goldstein Show” tonight on Newsradio 710-KIRO

by Goldy — Sunday, 7/23/06, 4:24 pm

I can’t stand the heat so I’m getting into a cool, air-conditioned studio tonight on “The David Goldstein Show” — Newsradio 710-KIRO, from 7PM to 10PM. Here’s the line-up, but as always, things could change depending on breaking news and guest availability.

7PM: Hot enough for you? Sure feels like global warming. Is modern society to blame for our massive carbon emissions? Or perhaps “God has already started punishing us” for abandoning his ways? We’re gonna talk about the weather… and if that doesn’t get folks hot underneath the collar, perhaps we’ll spend a little time talking about the escalating war in Lebanon.

8PM: Is our democracy being undermined by greedy corporate interests? Political strategist, journalist and blogger David Sirota joins me to discuss his bestselling book HOSTILE TAKEOVER: How Big Money & Corruption Conquered Our Government — And How We take It Back. Sirota has served as a press secretary for Rep. Bernie Sanders, a fellow at the Center for American Progress and as a senior strategist to Gov. Brian Schweitzer of Montana. He is a frequent contributor to several national publications and a twice-weekly guest on The Al Franken Show. Sirota will be speaking and signing books Thursday, July 27, 7:30 PM at Seattle’s Town Hall.

9PM: Has the Republican Party abandoned its libertarian base? Are small “l” libertarians abandoning the Republican Party? Joining me to answer that question is local blogger Lee Rosenberg (Blog Reload,) a self-described libertarian and the co-host of the Seattle chapter of Drinking Liberally. Huh? How can he be both? In a lengthy and oddly titled post, Lee explores the inherent contradictions of economic libertarian absolutism, and describes how an increasingly authoritarian Republican Party is driving social libertarians to support Democrats. Also, be sure to check out Glenn Greenwald’s controversial post: Libertarians and the Republican Party — Irreconcilable Differences.

Tune in tonight (or listen to the live stream) and give me a call: 1-877-710-KIRO (5476).

Authoritarian personalities like MTR can’t grasp that life isn’t always white/black, either/or, good/evil. And as a narcissist, he assumes that everyone else thinks the same way he does (e.g., in No. 6 above).

Thus, MTR thinks he is saying something intelligent when he insists that all liberals (re: anyone who disagrees with him) believe that only corporate oppression should be fought.

It’s too bad that MTR’s brain operates with such simplistic dualities, because it keeps him from recognizing how much diversity of opinion there is on the “left” side of the political spectrum.

The result is that MTR’s comments have a stick-figure quality. Yet everyone who disagrees with him is a “pathetic fucking idiot.”

    Quite the intellectual achievement, MTR.

Instead, what you Murka Haters would like is for their to be a ruling class (which you would run according to moonbat religious doctrine) that would leave The People out of things.

I doubt anyone would be surprised if told that the military has an unusually large number of “conservatives” in its ranks. Why on earth would a pacifist join the Army?

The problem with Rufus’ argument is that it never rises above white/black, good/evil dualities.

For example, Rufus can’t acknowledge that a principled pacifist (as opposed to an opportunistic coward like Dick Cheney) can be as patriotic as an Army enlistee. The very idea would seem to make Rufus’ brain sputter like a defective fire cracker. Yet that equivalency is very much part of what it means to live in a nation built upon political pluralism. We have a right to disagree about war as much as anything else.

Rufus also doesn’t acknowledge that people in the military are not a monolithic beast lacking in independent thinking skills. There were a host of distinguished military leaders who argued against the Iraq invasion, and recent opinion polls of soldiers stationed in Iraq hardly show unanimous support for the continuation of the American occupation.

All wars are not created equal. One could go on and on quoting famous military leaders about the need for restraint in international relations. But such subtlety does not fit Rufus’ debating style, which has great similarities to MTR’s.

Roger and Gang now that we are building a tunnel to replace the Alaska Viaduct today according to the Mayor of Seattle. Would you feel very safe that it will be completed like the one in Boston? Would the vision be like the Seattle Monorail and the progress like the light rail to nowhere and the service like Metro Bus service? What would be the final cost (like the big dig in Boston) for this project and how much will the Taxpayers have to pay in hidden taxes? Will it have six lanes that merge into two in the middle of the tunnel and exits to nowhere? You know like I5 in Seattle that they have no expectation to fix due to lack of engineering skill sets for the leaders running the city of Seattle. Hell lets have Roger Rabbit do all the digging and save lots of money on the project.

    July 23, 2006
BOSTON –Only 4 percent of Massachusetts adults would feel “very” safe driving through the tunnels of the Big Dig, according to a poll taken in the aftermath of a collapse that killed a motorist. The poll, published in The Boston Sunday Globe, found that 68 percent would feel “not very” or “not at all” safe driving through the tunnels.

You are entitled to your own opinion GT but not to your own facts. In the military you will always have a small minority of people who are against war. That said the overwhelming majority is for it. We are not in a draft situation so there are plenty of republicans who are serving right now. The most important thing the average republican can do right now vote in large numbers to overcome those soldiers who vote will not count. The fight at home is just as important as the fight abroad.

The military may not be as Republican as MTR and Doofus would like to think it is. (But then, never having served, how would they know?)

    “Corps Voters”

“For over two decades, the bond between the GOP and the U.S. military has been getting stronger. Since the invasion of Iraq, that may be changing.”

    “By Benjamin Wallace-Wells

” … The American military is composed of thousands of men and women who have made … deeply personal … contracts with their friends and families: The soldiers promise to die, if needed, to defend your freedoms, and the civilians promise to honor them. … “Six months ago, that patriotic support extended to President Bush and the Republican Party. …

“But these attitudes have begun to change. … Soldiers’ wives ask reporters why their husbands are still being sent off to Iraq … months after the president said the war was over. Returned reservists, who saw their return dates pushed back again and again while they sat in a chaotic war zone, … say they didn’t sign up for this sort of treatment, and they won’t be reenlisting. …

“‘I’m a strong Republican, but the Republicans have been the problem; we’ve been treated like second-class citizens,’ a retired Vietnam Marine helicopter gunnery sergeant named Don Beaver told me in North Carolina.

“Elsie P. Smith, the town’s Republican mayor, says: ‘There’s a few people who have become very hostile [towards the Bush administration]. . . the longer the war goes on, the more of that subtle shift you’re going to see.’ … Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr. (R-N.C.) … said the administration treats vets like ‘second-class citizens.’ …

“A similar mood is emerging in small, patriotic towns around the country. According to a study … by Stars and Stripes, half of American soldiers in-country say their units have low morale, that they were insufficiently trained, and that they won’t reenlist. …

“Holly Rossi, whose husband, Rob, is an Army reserve engineer out of Londonderry, N.H., has watched the Family Support Group for his unit, wives who started the war as staunch pro-Bush patriots, come to doubt the political mission. ‘A lot of people feel tugged. We have built our lives around … patriotism no matter what, but we’re feeling very abandoned.’ Charles Carter, a retired Naval chief petty officer, told Knight Ridder: ‘I will vote non-Republican in a heartbeat if it continues as is.’ Carter’s opinion is representative. While the GOP hasn’t lost the military vote, if present trends continue, it could see substantial defections in one of its core constituencies. …

“Trying to suss out the voting patterns of the military, and the ways in which their professional frustrations and satisfactions spill over into politics, has always been a murky, Kremlinology-like game …. Scholars who study the politics of the military rely on what scraps of data they can assemble …. (T)he consensus view seems to be that the military as a whole votes Republican by a margin of slightly less than 2-to-1, with enlisted men and women Republican by 3-to-2, and Republicans outnumbering Democrats among officers by 8-to-1. …

“Historians think that during World War II, when most soldiers had grown up during the Roosevelt ’30s, the military was more Democratic than Republican. By the early ’60s, the ranks reflected the conservatism of the 1950s. Vietnam made the military even more conservative … (then) the all-volunteer military … gave the troops a different demographic cast. They were disproportionately Southern, rural, poor, and morally traditional – the cultural base which would drive Nixon’s Southern Majority and, 30 years later, Red America … perhaps more importantly, scholars say, men who had fought in Vietnam (felt) they had been abandoned by American liberals …. A profound cultural divide appeared to develop between civilians and the military …. Reagan’s … massaging of the military’s damaged, wound-licking ego, ‘gave the military back the respect it felt had been stripped from it by liberals after Vietnam,’ said David Segal of the University of Maryland, a sociologist who studies the American military. Soldiers became not only more Republican, but also more overtly political ….

“One important moderating influence, sociologists think, has been the presence of large numbers of uniformed African Americans and, later, Hispanics and women. … The blacks, Hispanics, and women in the military are less liberal and Democratic than blacks, Hispanics, and women in the general population, but they are also less conservative and Republican than white men in the Armed Forces.

    …

“The military’s gripes with the (Bush) administration didn’t grow widespread until after we’d conquered Iraq; the problems with planning … translated into unpleasant realities for soldiers in the field. Many officers have become disenchanted with the continuing chaos in Iraq, and with the lengthening of in-country stays and the changing rotation schedules.

“‘What I’ve seen throughout the officer corps is a real pendulum swing over the last three or four months, from being pro-Bush to anti-Bush,’ Vandergriff said. ‘The officers at the middle levels, who are traditionally the most Republican, are frustrated … that there’s no exit strategy,’ and worry that ‘this conflict could just drag on and on.’

“Retired Gen. Anthony Zinni, who had been friendly enough with the Bush administration that he was sent last year as the president’s special emissary to the Israelis and Palestinians, last month called the administration’s policy a ‘brain fart.’

“Says Richard Kohn, a professor of history at the University of North Carolina and a scholar of the military: ‘It is my belief that the Iraq war may be what forces the officer corps to return to the old George C. Marshall model of non-partisanship.’

“Discontented enlisted men and women have a separate set of provocations …. Chief among these complaints is … the military has fought this war with too few troops. The war in Iraq is … brutal … day-to-day …. They are facing an enemy who is not easily identifiable; when they are too aggressive, they are criticized by the press, and when they are not aggressive enough, they are reprimanded by their superiors, if they don’t end up dead. … (S)oldiers in-country live for the date on which they can return stateside. But many of them have seen that date pushed back, and then pushed back again, and then pushed back again … this … is crushing to morale. …

“Christopher Parker, a former Army captain and a political scientist at the University of California-Santa Barbara, put it … bluntly: ‘What we’re seeing now is … this widespread sense among people in the military that they’re being jacked around.’ … Troops have been charged a dollar a minute to call home …. Tens of thousands of troops have been sent to Iraq with flak jackets from the Vietnam era which … can’t stop rounds … fired by the Iraqi enemy. The Pentagon, looking to trim costs last spring, floated a plan to eliminate the pay benefits soldiers got for serving in so-called ‘hostile areas’ … injured reservists were billed for food they were served while in the hospital. And veterans’ groups are up in arms over … a military regulation … that no retired soldier receiving his pension from the Department of Defense can also qualify for disability. … ‘There are six hundred thousand disabled veterans, and they are furious,’ Joseph Galloway, Knight Ridder’s esteemed military reporter, told me.

“Reservists may be the tipping point. The reserves have been summoned nine times in the last 12 years, to meet American obligations around the world, after having previously been summoned only six times since World War II. Reservists who have been sent to Iraq recently have found themselves vastly under-equipped. Things have gone so badly for the reservists that many senior officers … expect a staffing crisis when the current tours are up.

“The effect of all of this, says Andrew Bacevich, a retired Army colonel and professor of political science at Boston University, is that ‘the soldier vote and the pro-military vote are in play.’ …”

His inference of her cheating on me is morally repugnant to her and is the fathest thing from the truth for these 26 years. He can attack me all he wants but she is FED UP with his crap!

This is not. “And veterans’ groups are up in arms over … a military regulation … that no retired soldier receiving his pension from the Department of Defense can also qualify for disability. … ‘There are six hundred thousand disabled veterans, and they are furious,’

A regulation existed for years that applied to retirees pay. When you received disability – your military retired pay was reduced and offset by the same amount, so the resulting payment was only a tax deduction. You pay taxes on retired pay, but not on disability payments.

President Bush changed that a couple of years ago and authorized concurrent receipt of both retired pay and disability pay.

    I get both………

The military has always charged everyone for meals in hospitals…. even if you don’t eat in the hospital. It always aggravates soldiers.

“The destruction of the infrastructure, the death of so many children and so many people: these have not been surgical strikes. If they are chasing Hizbollah, then go for Hizbollah. You don’t go for the entire Lebanese nation.”

    French Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie:
“One cannot ask the Lebanese national army to disarm the militias and at the same time bomb the main Lebanese barracks…And unfortunately, more and more, we are seeing a number of bombardments that are hitting civilians, even convoys of people who were simply seeking to reach Beirut to find shelter have been hit by bombs.”

As Gideon Levy puts it, Israel “claims it has declared war on Hezbollah but, in practice, it is destroying Lebanon.”

Mac — the concurrent pay issue may be resolved now, but Bush’s foot-dragging on the issue angered veterans groups, and you know as well as I these things are never forgotten.

The real question is the validity of the article’s premise that the GOP’s grip on the military vote is loosening. No one has good statistics on the military vote, because pollsters are denied access to soldiers; political scientists believe the military was more Democratic than Republican in WW2, but has became more southern and more Republican since then, especially after the draft ended in 1973.

Any time there’s a war, there’s a natural constituency for the the mission among the serving military. But losing a war can shatter a party’s grip on the military vote, and the Republicans will lose their war in Iraq. (And this war, unlike Vietnam, is clearly identifiable to one party.)

The article does not suggest military voters will suddenly switch to Democrats. The Democrats might get half the enlisted vote, but the officer and noncoms are Republican by an 8-to-1 margin. However, if career military people become disgusted with the GOP — as they should — they may return to the professional military’s historic detachment from politics and wariness of politicians from both parties.

Politics is visceral, not intellectual. For years, I corresponded with a man in Florida who had been an officer in my unit in Vietnam. He forwarded to me all the rightwing mass-circ e-mails. I would send him something from snopes.com or one of the other debunker web sites taking apart the rightwingers’ bullshit-of-the-day. It didn’t make a dent. He was like a cat caught with a bird in its mouth; he would drop the bird, then go catch another one. I ended my correspondence with him, because you can’t deal with dishonesty. First and foremost, he was dishonest with himself, because he insisted on believe things even after they were demonstrated to be false and the source was shown to have repeatedly lied.

Sure, there’s lots of veterans and military personnel who will believe what they want to, no matter what the truth is. Democrats will never sway these voters with arguments. But they know when they’re being fucked over by their chain of command, and they do respond to that. Not overtly, not right away, but human nature being what it is, once the GOP loses these folks they will never come back to the GOP.

The Democrats don’t have to do anything except wait for the GOP to self-destruct.

Whoa, man, we were talking about your personal slander lawsuit. Your attempt to put comments personal to you into a context of general comments about rightwingers is less than deft. Within the context of a slander claim, I will say that none of the comments you list fall into the category of legally slanderous. A public figure, such as GW, for all intents and purposes, cannot successfully sue for slander. The Supreme Court correctly determined in 1964 that an individual who willingly becomes a public figure should anticipate that, in a free society, some bad things are going to be said about him or her. With regard to many of your other listed comments, I would say that some are true and so not slanderous (truth is an absolute defense to slander), others are simply fair comment, others represent opinion (not actionable as slander), and a few might be a bit over the top, but hyperbole is not actionable. What is your point? That nothing disrespectful can be said about conservatives? What kind of nation is it that you want to live in? You confuse derogatory with defamatory. The marketplace of ideas sometimes involves bad things being said about people you respect. Get used to it, or move to a totalitarian country.

Of course, this also raises the question of the proper role of the military vote in American politics. The military should serve policy, not drive policy. For two centuries, this has been an axiomatic feature of American political life.

Should the military’s political views on issues of war and peace, or military spending, take precedence of those of civilian voters? No, absolutely not!! On spending issues, the military is a special interest group — of course they want more military spending. But military spending comes at the expense of the civilian economy, and also comes at the expense of social spending that benefits the citizens who do the nation’s work and pay its taxes. There needs to be a balance. The military can never have enough resources, so its demands for manpower and weaponry are infinite, and what is really needed is wise management of limited resources — as in any other enterprise.

But above all, military voters should not decide whether the nation goes to war. Comprising only a couple percent of the voting population, they can’t expect to overrule the civilian electorate in that regard. More importantly, they have to get pumped up for the mission, and can’t possibly bring to their voting decisions the detachment or objectivity needed to decide whether a given war is necessary, or a bad idea. You can always get soldiers to support a war, even a wrongful war; the decision to go to war is for the nation as a whole (98% of which is comprised of civilians) to decide, using its collective conscience as a guide. Any argument that soldiers know better than the rest of us, and their opinion should take precedence over our individual consciences, is false.

The opinion of military voters, of course, has influence far beyond military personnel. It not only influences their families and veterans, but also voters without direct connections to the military who are sympathetic to, and supportive of, the military — including many Democrats.

But we, as a nation, must guard against the militarism and nationalism that has led so many other nations into aggressive wars, to mankind’s incalculable grief. Americans do not possess a different human nature than people elsewhere; but unfortunately, legitimate liberal concerns about excessive militarism and nationalism in our own society has been misinterpreted by some military voters and veterans, and has been exploited by rightwing propagandists.

What wingers call “unpatriotic” is, in fact, profoundly patriotic. Liberals want what is best for our country, and for humankind as a whole. War is an unmitigated evil, so it is understandable that we have pacifists among us, who oppose war under all circumstances. Human nature being what it is, realistic liberals will understand the need to maintain a strong defense — not only for deterrence, but for defense, when needed.

Yes, there are times when we have to fight; and 9/11 is one of those times. Our country was attacked. It is proper, and patriotic, to ask why we were attacked and — being a superpower with global reach and perhaps a tendency to get overbearing in our dealings with other countries and cultures — whether some of our own policies should be re-examined. But the 9/11 attacks were an act of war that called for a military response against the perpetrators.

There are many things about Bush’s response to 9/11 that make no sense to us. His willful ignoring of warnings leading up to 9/11 is deeply troubling. After what appeared to be a brilliant start, the Afghanistan campaign bogged down because it was starved of military manpower and resources that were diverted to an unnecessary — and miscarried — adventure in Iraq that we know now was on the drawing board before the 2000 election and would have occurred even if 9/11 had not. And the Iraq campaign has been conducted with a sheer incompetence for which it is hard to find any modern precedent; you have to go back to the Union side of the Civil War to find a comparable level of stupidity and civilian interference. It is inexplicable to us liberals that our Republican brethren continue to assign their blind faith and votes to politicians who have served them, and our nation, so badly as Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Perle and Wolfowitz have. They are the McClellans and Butlers of our time, and history will not be kind to them.

Nor will history be kind to the unthinking voters who gave them a blank check.

“Whatsamatter, is the $7.36 an hour BIAW pays” Wrong idiot. You called me Kevin Cairns. Wrong there too!

“Hey Puddy, did you have a bad experience with a priest when you were an alter boy?” You know my religion. Never been Catholic. And after reading Koxes Book of Martyrs I don’t plan to.

“By the way, Puddybutt, were you and MTR married to his dead crack-whore wife at the same time?” No but if she was a rabbit you’d hump her right?

I would just like to say that with a part-time job and the generous tithes Pud gives at temple, I am impressed he has the fiscal wherewithal to consider a libel suit.

Pud, take it from someone in your economic class who has the benefit of partying with lawyers as well. You just ain’t that rich.

HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
