MTR, among other pseudonmys, have been babbling a lot about what lefties like me think of the killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
Unlike the trolls, I decided to wait a few days before coming to any conclusion about what the death of this street thug would mean to the situation on the ground in Iraq.
al-Zarqawi had been another BushCo whipping boy, like Jose Padilla, that they trotted out to impress us all with how tough the chicken hawks are on terrorist. Zarqawi had a criminal record as a sex offender before going to Afghanistan. There began to follow the most extreme school of Salafism, closely akin to the puritanical Wahhabism. Basically, Salafists believe that anyone who doesn’t practice Islam as they do is and infidel and needs to be dead. That was the religion Zarqawi had always been looking for, and the Iraq war gave him his opportunity to become the psychotic killer he had been destined to become.
So he was a great target, you have to wonder what took us so long, but what has happened in Iraq since Zarqawi has been dead?
On Saturday, rebel forces foiled heightened security in Baghdad and killed more than two dozen people Saturday in an action meant to avenge the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, dealing a blow to the Iraqi government’s pledge to bring peace to the capital. Eleven more Iraqis died in shooting attacks across Iraq. And U.S. troops combed through the region south of the capital looking for two soldiers missing since an attack Friday that had also killed one of their comrades.

As a Jordanian intelligence officer said If Zarqawi is captured or killed tomorrow, the Iraqi insurgency will go on. There is no such thing as ‘Zarqawism.’
Just another Karl Rove stunt in an attempt to push up Bush’s poll numbers, and it worked. It worked every other time the Pentagon reported al Zarqawi’s death had been trotted out, and this was the last hurrah. The previous cries of wolf necessitated a body this time.
Bush had his photo op, another Mission Accomplished, but the spree of violence in Baghdad has been an embarrassment for Iraq Prime Minister al-Maliki, who ordered more police and army checkpoints to restore security for the 5 million Baghdad residents.
This stroll on the deck appears to be about as effective as the previous one. Of course, you righties don’t care about competence, bright shiny objects cause you to pounce at shadows. The Pentagon is looking for a new cat toy excuse for you to use in claiming that the violence in Iraq is imported. But when al-Maliki will forgive killing of Americans in amnesty negotiations, we know where he thinks the attacks are coming from.
MILITARY VOTERS WERE DISENFRANCHISED
For months, I’ve been posting that military voters weren’t disenfranchised. Now I’m forced to admit that I was wrong. They were — by the evil Republican election stealers!
In a previous thread, one of this blog’s foremost crusaders for truth and justice, Daddy Love, reported a bombshell:
GOP operatives targeted soldiers serving in Iraq for voter challenges that deprived them of their right to vote!!!
They employed the familiar GOP modus operandi of mailing certified letters to voters and then challenging those who did not sign for the letters. The challenged voters had to cast provisional ballots — and in the 2004 election, over a million provisional ballots plus another half million absentee ballots WERE NOT COUNTED.
The scheme leaked to the media when a careless GOP operative accidentally sent e-mails with internal documents attached to a non-party web site. These documents included what GOP operatives call “caging lists,” i.e., lists of voters targeted for challenges.
And there is no question that military personnel were deliberately targeted. “One target list was comprised exclusively of voters registered at the Jacksonville, Florida, Naval Air Station,” journalist Greg Palast reported.
Among those deliberately targeted were black soldiers serving in Iraq, whom the GOP strategists figured would vote predominantly Democratic. The GOP sent certified letters to the U.S. homes of soldiers deployed in Iraq, then challenged their registrations, and of course there was nothing the soldiers could do about it from half a world away. In fact, most didn’t even know about the letters or challenges, and don’t know their votes didn’t count.
“The BBC obtained several dozen confidential emails sent by the Republican’s national Research Director and Deputy Communications chief, Tim Griffin to GOP Florida campaign chairman Brett Doster and other party leaders. Attached were spreadsheets marked, ‘Caging.xls.’ Each of these contained several hundred to a few thousand voters and their addresses. A check of the demographics of the addresses on the ‘caging lists,’ as the GOP leaders called them indicated that most were in African-American majority zip codes,” Palast writes.
Of course, the GOP lied to the media about what the “caging lists” were. When questioned by reporters, a GOP official replied the lists were “potential donors” to the Bush campaign. But, confronted with the evidence of its voter suppression campaign, the GOP later backed off this absurd claim reluctantly acknowledged the lists would be used to block voters from voting if, the official asserted, it was “legal.”
For the entire article about this disgusting Republican conspiracy to keep American troops fighting to establish democracy in Iraq from voting in their own country, see http://www.gregpalast.com/mass.....o-soldiers
“Yo can’t spell his name right” Commentby rwb— 6/17/06@ 11:21 pm
True. “Yo” is a contraction of “yahoo” (as in “trailer park yahoo”) and is properly spelled “Y’o.” Like most wingfucks, Y’o is an illiterate who doesn’t use apostrophes when he’s supposed to, and uses them when he’s not supposed to.
For example, Y’o would write the above sentence as: Like most wingfucks, Yo is an illiterate who doesnt use apostrophe’s when hes supposed to, and use’s them when hes not suppose’d to.

You can always tell who the Republicans believe is practicing voter fraud. They have names like James Robinson, Willie McGee, Clarence Henderson, Johnny Jackson, etc.
These suspicious characters must be challenged, as Sheriff Bull Connor used to do in Alabama, but without the dogs and billy clubs.
The other day, “sillyguy” came up with the idea of amending the state constitution to require revotes in close elections. That’s as stupid as this idea: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I.....hopter.JPG
If we did that, they’d still be holding revotes of the 2004 governor’s election 1,000 years from now.
You know what they say — crackpots of a feather flock together. Hey “sillyguy” — how’s the weather up there at 10,000 feet?
I think YO is a liberal jerkin’ all your chains, trying to make you all think he’s a lib. He stole Yo’s handle and is being a faker.
oops—trying to make you all think he’s a conservative. (makes more sense, doesn’t it?_
BTW, if Iraq is a soverign country, what’s up with Bush flying to a foreign country without an announcement to that country’s government?
Oh yeah, General Casey must have known he was coming.
YO aint no fake, but hez god at jerkin my chain!!!

Yeah, put in a tight election race a democRAT has to do what they have to do.
You don’t have to worry about Bush’s tax increases, Dufus. You’ll never make enough to get hit with the alternative minimum tax. It only affects people making over $6 an hour.
Roger, what’s wrong with having sexual intercourse with a pig’s anus? Is your multicultural consciousness limited by your provincial upbringing? Personally, I find pig’s anuses quite enjoyable. Thank God I’m a country boy!
The Brookings Institution reports,
“Although the IRS’s National Taxpayer Advocate reported earlier this month (January 2004) that the AMT was the most serious problem faced by taxpayers, President Bush’s 2004 State of the Union address did not mention the AMT … the tax cuts that he has championed threaten to double the number of AMT taxpayers … and the President advocates making those tax cuts permanent, which will significantly increase the number of families subject to the AMT over the long term.
“Under current law, AMT coverage will skyrocket. By 2010, the AMT will affect 33 million taxpayers – about one-third of all tax returns — up from 1 million in 1999. This would make the AMT almost as common as the mortgage interest deduction is today. The AMT will be the de facto tax system for households with income between $100,000 and $500,000, 93 percent of whom will face the tax. It will encroach dramatically on the middle class, affecting 37 percent of households with income between $50,000 and $75,000 and 73 percent of households with income between $75,000 and $100,000 (compared to less than 3 percent for each group in 2002).”
http://www.brookings.edu/views.....121amt.htm
I wonder how many of the idiots who voted for Bush because they thought they’re getting a tax cut know the AMT will repeal ALL of the Bush tax cuts that went to the middle class, leaving only his tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy in place?
You can bet your ass Bush knew this.

You ever seen a rabig? or a piggit? I have an important ecological function to perform — namely, to make sure that after the human species kills itself off there’s enough rabbits to take over the planet! Even if fucking pigs produced offspring, they would be sterile hybrids. I don’t have time for recreational fucking. My job is procreational fucking!
The Brookings Institution is the nation’s oldest think tank, and has over 140 scholars who publish articles on issues of broad public interest.
To show how far right wing extremists will go, Charles Colson told the Watergate committee that Nixon seriously discussed firebombing the Brooking Institution’s building.
Roger, if you limit yourself to procreational sexual intercourse then you have found common ground with my esteemed fundamental Christian colleagues. This is a good sign, because it shows that we can work together to procreate a better America.
Alas, there is a downside here. I must admit to hoping that you and my esteemed colleagues do not succeed in outlawing sexual intercourse with pig anuses. A federal three-porks-you’re-out law could decimate rural economies.
It’s almost 1 AM and time for me to perform an important biological function — hop up the hill and graze in Stefan’s garden, turn his vegetables into compost in my fat furry tummy, and fertilize his lawn. We don’t want his grass to die for lack of nutrients, do we? Gotta go, kiddies — I work graveyard shift. I’ll see you unpatriotic America-hating fascist fuckwads again tomorrow. :D

I left you my legal question in other open thread.
Time for Beddie-bye. Get some sleep doofus, you’re running low on brain cells. Try to conserve your motor functions.

I answered your legal question in the other thread.
Republican news man Tony Snow shows that the KKK-lovin right can’t tell one black from another…
“I apologize for being an idiot,” Snow said Thursday during his daily briefing to the news media. “I misidentified Representative Sheila Jackson Lee as Cynthia McKinney.”
Last week, Snow gave reporters a routine account of a meeting President Bush conducted with members of Congress on Iraq. In the retelling, Snow confused one African-American Democratic female lawmaker for another.
“Cynthia McKinney made the point yesterday in the meeting with the president that the one thing they had gotten from generals there were thorough and honest assessments of what’s going on,” Snow said then.
OMG this IS funny. Ann Coulter gets what she deserves from actor Henry Rollins!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v.....t&f=b
Yeah, Rollins has it right. The transgender stuff is too easy. Henry get to the heart of the Coulter claptrap. She just needs to shut the fuck up.
Goldy,
You are on the worng side of history. When your grandchild asks you, “Grandpa, why didn’t you support the great visionary leader and world liberator George Bush?” you will simply hang your head in shame and reply, “I was blind, son, I was blind.”
Left Turn
The problem is that Henry Rollins is not as funny as he thinks he is and, worse, he is not as smart as he thinks he is. I give him credit for having read Henry Miller. Otherwise his snarly attitude of bad-boy outsider (while being a media insider) panders to his audience and makes them feel special; meanwhile snarly bad boy Henry takes his oh-so rebellious ass off whistling to the bank…

Hey, dude, now you have the satire thing starting to work for you.
“visionary leader?” “world liberator?” Those are good ‘uns! The Nazi imagery in your rhetoric really brings the satire home!
Georgia’s July 18 primary elections are less than a month away and still the state’s voter ID cards haven’t been issued. The state Board of Elections on Monday is expected to approve final rules governing the state’s new photo voter IDs. […….Funny how IDs for welfare and food stamps can be done quickly, but Democrat controlled cities and counties seem to have outrageous problems with voter ID. “Why, I think this is just toooooo big a problem to handle, so maybe we’ll just do without the IDs.” [hehe………JCH]
55.
Your satire quotient suffers though when you comment on things you haven’t witnessed.
But, not as funny as he thinks he is in relationship to Ann Coulter is ironic.
54
It’s not hard to be a “visionary” when your “vision” consists of returning your country to the social and economic creeds of 125 years ago.
You got that right, Roger, my grandfather was born in 1880, these punks have notions like his.
Right guys; love those antiquated notions like fighting to the death for the end of slavery; for freedom. Similar to what we are trying to do in Iraq. But, then, you guys like Saddam and the hellish slavery he imposed on his own people, the destruction to his neighbors…
I love anti-capitalists with capitalist bank accounts…
Fighting against slavery in Iraq? What set of talking points are you reading?
And one more thing Das Boot, are you willing to spend trillions removing “slavery” in the 23 other nations that have dictators?
Those of us who are opposed to the war in Iraq would love to see some good old fashioned democracy right here in America.

The guys at the 89th AW out of Andrews used to say Tom Foley (remember him?) used the Gulfstream so much the lads started calling it “Air Foley.” LeftTurn, ALL POLITICIANs, Demo-dunce or Repugnican, abuse the Air Force’s assets. They expect free Air Force flights and certainly don’t desreve them.
I know what you mean LeftTurn: there is no democracy in America; you wake up afraid of the police every day and at night you tremble waiting for the Cheka to knock on your door and drag you away; there is no democracy in America.
Now, what are you talking about?
I remember MTR’s obsession with teh Contract on America being the source of all things good in the USA, particularly as the reason why nothing good that happened between 1992 and 2000 was due to Bill Clinton (though, as we all know, anything good that has happened from 2000 to 2006 is due to GW Bush’s great ideas and strong leadership, but nothing bad that has is due to anythign he did). Anyway, here’s another take on the significance of the CoA, from Josh Marshall:
“The Contract [on] America is now judged a seminal political act whereas in fact, I would say, it had little if anything to do with the result of that watershed election. 1994 happened because Bill Clinton was very unpopular two years into his first term. A new wave of right-wing politics — bound up with but not limited to talk radio — had been building steam since the beginning of the Bush years. Clinton’s unpopularity both stemmed from that wave and helped crystallize it. Add to these factors the fact that redistricting, a wave of retirements and unified Democratic control in Washington for the first time in a generation all made the South ripe for finally flipping over into the hands of the Republican party at the Congressional level.”
Not that any of this could possibly be true, because Mark doesn’t think so.
I love this…
“…Saddam and the hellish slavery he imposed on his own people…”
Iraq before our disastrous invasion and occupation was a mostly prosperous nation with a large educated middle class, though a nation having considerable economic dislocation due to international economic sanctions. Iraq had probably the most female-friendly secular society in the Middle East outside of Israel, and in nearly any sphere of activity other than the political the Iraqis enjoyed considerable autonomy. Politically, of course, Saddam tolerated no opposition and brutally repressed perceived political challenges. But for the run-of-the-mill Iraqi without poitical aspirations or a strong desire to oppose the government (sort of like the half of Americans who don’t bother to vote), they were far from slaves, and in fact had jobs, money, eletricity, and water in quantities unknown to Iraqis today.
Let’s discuss, but let’s don’t tell tall tales.
I know what you mean Daddy Love life was beautiful and free under Saddam; repeat until the end and then start over…
