Last week, Justin reported on Rep. Jerry Lewis’s (R-CA) top aide at the House Appropriations Committee, Letitia White. The FBI’s investigation of Lewis is reportedly revolving around Lewis’ very close ties to lobbyist Bill Lowery, and Letitia White was one of a few aides who moved from Lewis’s office to Lowery’s. As Justin pointed out, she was flown to Italy for a 10-day all-expenses-paid trip by a defense contractor while with Lewis; a couple months thereafter, she left the Hill and registered to lobby for the company with Lowery’s firm.
White was about as powerful as an aide can be on Capitol Hill. And investigators are interested. As we noted yesterday, the FBI recently subpoenaed San Bernadino County, a client of Lowery’s firm. White was one of their lobbyists.
And The New York Times reports that “prosecutors are looking into” White’s ties to Lewis and Lowery.
According to the Times, White had a real hold on Lewis. And she got all sorts of special attention from lobbyists while she worked with him, including Brent “Boom shaka laka” Wilkes and Lowery

Another set of dumb decisions by the Seattle School District should not be a source of suprise or anger by those on the left, or glee by those on the right. It should be a case of concern by everyone.
Seems very fair when the fact is that the Montessori will be moved. The people of Seattle are over taxed and at least the School board shows it has the will to save the tax payers some money and move the regular program students to schools that are doing better by their students and have more stable leadership. For the Montessori parents it will be a loss of their private club house and some power. I wonder how much of a factor the Montessori parents control of the PTA led to the school having 9 principal in 6 years. What if the Montessori parents rent space in the building from the district if they are determined to not have the program relocated?
Maybe at some point the city will get some leadership on transportation issues in the same way we are seeing a glimmer of leadership coming from the education sector.
So far 70 federal – level republicans have been arrested, indicted, convicted or pled guilty to crimes since Bush took office. Compare this to only 38 during the entire eight years of Clinton in office and Bush has more than two years to go and lots more people under investigation. Yet another record for the culture of corruption.

Goldy — how did you stand on charter schools when that was voted on in 2004? Basically, your Montesorri program is a RICH WHITE charter school (without a charter of course).
The Montesorri program at Graham Hill is 62.5% non-Hispanic white, while the remainder of Graham Hill is only 5.5% non-Hispanic white.
Only 12.8% qualify for subsidized school lunches in Montesorri — not surprising, since tuition has to be paid. The remainder of Graham Hill has 67.8% qualify for subsidized school lunches.
Only 0.9% of Montesorri is “bilingual” — which I assume means immigrant students (mainly Hispanic and SE Asian in your neighborhood) who are still struggling with English. The remainder of Graham Hill is 28.8% “bilingual”.
Too bad Goldy’s RICH WHITE COUNTRY CLUB is being closed down.
Maybe if Democrats were willing to provide good education opportunities to everyone — including poor blacks, Hispanics, and SE Asians — and not just RICH WHITES — programs like Goldy’s Montesorri could not only stay open, but be available to all students in the Seattle school district.
If Goldy doesn’t like the idea of his daughter going to school with so many poor folks, black folks, Hispanic folks, and SE Asian folks, he can always move to Bellevue.

Graham Hill has a total of 353 students (including the Montesorri 3 year olds and 4 year olds). 268 or 75.9% are minorities and 85 or 24.1% are white.
Of the 85 white students, 72 or 84.7% attend Montesorri, and 13 or 15.3% attend the “Regular” program.
Of the 268 minority students, 45 or 16.8% attend Montesorri, and 223 or 83.2% attend the “Regular” program.
As for subsidized school lunches, for Graham Hill as a whole, 175 or 49.6% have subsidized lunches, and 178 or 50.4% do not.
Of the 178 students with non-subsidized lunches, 102 or 57.3% attend the Montesorri program, and 76 or 42.7% attend the “Regular” program.
Of the 175 students with subsidized lunches, 15 or 8.6% attend the Montesorri program, and 160 or 91.4% attend the “Regular” program.
So the Montesorri program is basically for RICH WHITE STUDENTS and the POOR MINORITY STUDENTS get stuck with the “Regular” program.
Some people are calling me a RACIST for pointing out these facts. In reality, someone who wants their daughter to get a public school education with RICH WHITES, instead of POOR MINORITIES, may very well be a RACIST.

I know it is a STUPID decision to close Graham Hill, since it is physically one of the newest buildings (2004 renovation) in terms of effective age in the SE sector of Seattle.
The REAL problem here is the Montesorri program for RICH WHITE students. That is why the school district wants to shut Graham Hill — the Montesorri parents will NOT relocate the program to the 94% black African American Academy. And that is also why Goldy is so upset about the Graham Hill closure.
Seattle schools need to start providing a real EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EDUCATION for all students, and not special privileges for RICH WHITES. They should shut down the Montesorri program — or truly “integrate” it — instead of shutting down Graham Hill.

Coerced into taking an art history course (yawn) by credit requirements, I had no idea what I was getting into, but it turned out the prof held all the classes on the lawn outside the classroom building and you never knew what would happen in his class. For example, one day he picked up a bum with a banjo … er, I mean, an itinerant minstrel … and the class that day consisted of this guy performing on his banjo for us under the shade of the old elm trees. I actually learned a lot about art in this class.

FACT: All King County military/overseas ballots were mailed on or before the federal deadline.
FACT: The percentage of military/overseas ballotgs that were returned and counted is nearly identical to the turnout in the general voting population.
FACT: King County counted over 14,000 military/overseas votes, and disqualified only 16 because they were received too late. It is unknown how many of these 16 ballots were cast by military personnel, possibly none. It is unknown why they were received too late to be counted, but voter procrastination is a possibility.
FACT: King County Elections has no control over the military mail system.
FACT: Any person in the armed forces who, for any reason, did not receive his/her ballot could have requested a Federal Write In Ballot from his/her Unit Voting Assistance Officer. A military voter did not have to be registered to vote, or know the name of the candidate(s) he/she wished to vote for. All a military voter had to do was indicate a party preference (R) or (D) for any office, e.g., president, governor, U.S. senator, state representative, etc. — and that vote would be counted. Overseas military voters did not have to put a stamp on their ballot.

The state comptroller, Alan Hevesi, is getting his race for re-election off to an unusual start by describing his own remarks as “remarkably stupid,” “incredibly moronic,” and “totally offensive.”
Mr. Hevesi was referring to a remark he had made when he described Senator Schumer as someone who would “put a bullet between the president’s eyes, if he could get away with it.”
“We really feel bad for poor Chuck – United States senator. The man who, uh, uh, how do I phrase this diplomatically, will put a bullet between the president’s eyes, if he could get away with it,” Mr. Hevesi told graduating students at Queens College.
Mr. Schumer had spoken a few moments earlier.
Mr. Hevesi held a news conference a few hours later where he apologized for the remark. He said the comment was “blurted out” and was meant to praise Mr. Schumer’s tenacity in standing up to the president on policy issues.
A spokesman for the Secret Service, Jonathan Cherry, would not comment. White House officials did not return calls.
The remark comes as Mr. Hevesi is gearing up for his re-election campaign. His Republican challenger, J. Christopher Callaghan, the treasurer of Saratoga County, called the comment “appalling.” He said: “It’s shocking. You can’t unring a bell. It’s horrid judgment.”
A spokesman for Mr. Schumer, Risa Heller, said, “Comptroller Hevesi was trying to make a point, he went way too far and it was inappropriate and wrong.” Ms. Heller said via e-mail that Mr. Hevesi “has apologized to both the Senator and the President and we believe that ends the matter.”

Who loses by having GH stay open? Here is an direct example of a “charter” program outperforming a “regular” program. That surely makes the teachers in the “regular” program look bad. And, if you have to pay extra tuition to get the Montessori teachers that you want, what does that imply for the teacher’s union?
Pope comes close to the right answer, but I don’t think this is a race/class issue. I think it is strictly a coup by the teacher’s union against any program that confronts their power base. If these rogue programs are allowed to live, and are proven to be successful, they (the SEA) might be seen for the obstructionist that they are.

The SEA and other powers that be might have been willing to tolerate a RACIALLY BIASED and CLASS BIASED Montesorri program, if its results were similar to the “Regular” students and/or this disparity was not widely publicized. After all, it is nice for Democrat elite — such as teachers, professionals, government powermakers, and liberal bloggers — to have an exclusive place to educate their children.
But the combination of (1) “charter” program vastly outperforming “regular” program, (2) racial bias, (3) class bias, and (4) having to pay extra for what should be a free public education? All these put together, and especially the first factor, and you have to eliminate the Montesorri program.
It is HILARIOUS that Seattle school district wants to move the Graham Hill Montesorri program to the African American Academy. The two locations are only 2.6 miles apart, according to Mapquest.
The Montesorri parents were willing to pay extra for an exclusive education at Graham Hill, since the Montesorri program was 1/3 of the total school enrollment. Of the remaining 2/3, just over 40% were black.
Presumably, not nearly as many will be interested in sending their children to Montesorri at AAA. Even if no parents pull their children, the Montesorri would only be 1/5 of the proposed total enrollment at AAA. And the remaining 4/5 (i.e. the current AAA enrollment) would be 94% black.

GRAHAM HILL MONTESSORI APPEARS EXPRESSLY RACIST
It would be implicitly racist simply by charging $290 per month tuition. Whites and richer minorities would tend to pay for this, while poorer minorities would tend not to. A mere tuition payment for everyone would tend to produce the race and class segregation that we see.
However, it is Seattle school policy not to charge any tuition to subsidized lunch students for Montesorri and other programs that normally require a payment.
Therefore, the tuition requirement should not impose any barrier to minorities. Most minority students at Graham Hill are on subsidized lunches, while very few white students are.
But the reality is extreme race and class segregation.
Graham Hill has a total of 353 students (including the Montesorri 3 year olds and 4 year olds). 268 or 75.9% are minorities and 85 or 24.1% are white.
Of the 85 white students, 72 or 84.7% attend Montesorri, and 13 or 15.3% attend the “Regular” program.
Of the 268 minority students, 45 or 16.8% attend Montesorri, and 223 or 83.2% attend the “Regular” program.
As for subsidized school lunches, for Graham Hill as a whole, 175 or 49.6% have subsidized lunches, and 178 or 50.4% do not.
Of the 178 students with non-subsidized lunches, 102 or 57.3% attend the Montesorri program, and 76 or 42.7% attend the “Regular” program.
Of the 175 students with subsidized lunches, 15 or 8.6% attend the Montesorri program, and 160 or 91.4% attend the “Regular” program.
The Montesorri program at Graham Hill is 62.5% non-Hispanic white, while the remainder of Graham Hill is only 5.5% non-Hispanic white.
Only 12.8% qualify for subsidized school lunches in Montesorri. The remainder of Graham Hill has 67.8% qualify for subsidized school lunches.
