Man, there’s a lot of stuff to write about. Good thing thing I’m not the only one writing.

  • Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and his staff have a sense of humor. Who knew? Read about it in the P-I, or watch their video “The Committee to Save Big Ugly Things.”
  • Andrew and the folks at NPI don’t normally show much of a sense of humor, but they do have a new version of the Pacific Northwest Portal, the largest compilation of regional liberal blogs. Read about it here, or take a peek here.
  • Betcha former Enron exectives Ken Lay and Jeffery Skilling aren’t laughing, now that they’ve been convicted of conspiracy.
  • Mollie, our Liberal Girl Next Door, joins the fray attacking the Seattle School District’s deeply flawed school closure process. Nothing funny about that.
  • I’m heading off to Town Hall tonight to meet President Jimmy Carter, First Lady Rosilyn Carter, and their son Jack Carter, who is running for US Senate from Nevada. Stop by, tell me a joke to cheer me up, and help Jack Carter help the Dems retake the senate.

Laugh amongst yourselves.

UPDATE:
Oh… and last I checked the Seattle Times editorial board still hasn’t apologized to Ron Sims. Or acknowledge he was a local visionary on global warming. I’ll accept either.

Ethiopian cabdrivers face fine for election donations
    By Bob Young
    Seattle Times staff reporter

A group of Ethiopian cabdrivers has agreed to pay a fine for violating Seattle election laws when they contributed $5,000 last year to the City Council campaign of Dwight Pelz, now chairman of the state Democratic Party.

A taxi association formed by the drivers wrote checks to seven of its members, who then wrote $650 checks to Pelz last October. Such a transaction concealed the source of the contributions, and, in effect, skirted the city’s $650 limit on campaign contributions from individuals and organizations, said Wayne Barnett, executive director of the Seattle Ethics and Elections Commission.

Drivers say they funded the American Taxi Association with their own money in 2003 in order to get more cab licenses, and the association was merely giving them some of their own money to give to Pelz, who was then a member of the King County Council.

Still, the association of 25 Ethiopian drivers has agreed to pay a $4,550 fine.

The ethics commission will consider the proposed settlement Thursday.

The contributions to Pelz were not the largest made last year by the Ethiopian drivers. They gave $14,000 to King County Executive Ron Sims and $5,750 to King County Councilman Pete von Reichbauer for their re-election campaigns. They also paid $5,000 to Sims’ former aide Tim Hatley to lobby the County Council last year.

Those donations are out of the Seattle Ethics Commission’s jurisdiction.

The council and Sims laid out a process last year for issuing more county cab licenses, something the Ethiopian drivers wanted. The drivers hired Hatley and lobbied the County Council after they failed to force the city of Seattle to issue more licenses through a lawsuit.

Sims denied that the drivers’ contributions or Hatley’s lobbying influenced any of his actions. “There is no linkage, no connection at all in any way,” he said.

Sims said he proposed a process for issuing more licenses — which the council approved unanimously last October — because the council requested it.
And, when the county awarded eight new licenses on Wednesday to serve passengers in wheelchairs, the American Taxi Association did not get any of the licenses doled out through a competitive process.
Pelz said he met with drivers last year but that their contributions did not influence his support for issuing more licenses.
“I thought they made a good case for changing the current system,” he said.

The ethics commission did not implicate Pelz in any wrongdoing.

Tigabie Tekeba, president of the American Taxi Association, said his group contributed to Pelz, Sims and von Reichbauer not to gain cab licenses but because they liked the three politicians and found them sympathetic on issues important to immigrants.

Tekeba insisted that no one suggested his group contribute to the three politicians or hire Hatley. Tekeba said he did not expect his group’s contributions would buy any political favors, in part because the competition for new licenses is so intense that no group could get away with such a scheme.

“Never did anybody promise us anything,” said Tekeba, who fled Ethiopia’s communist regime in 1989, after he and other student protesters narrowly escaped being shot by troops.

“We didn’t like the one-party system. We were for free-market economics,” he added. “We came here for opportunity. Hopefully for some people the American Dream is a reality.”

Upon arriving in Seattle, Tekeba drove a cab while he earned two degrees at the University of Washington, he said.

Now a full-time employee at the Seattle Housing Authority and a part-time driver, Tekeba is determined to improve taxi-driving opportunities for other Ethiopian immigrants who have few other job options when they first come to Seattle.

The current taxi system is unfair, he maintains. Most drivers don’t own licenses and instead lease them from those who hold the 831 licenses that allow drivers to pick up fares in Seattle and King County.

The city and county have capped the number of available licenses in an effort to promote reliable service and good wages. Too many cabs on the streets might lead to lower wages, poorer service and less-safe cars, according to city and county regulators.

Tekeba says most drivers pay about $192 a day, on average, to lease and operate a cab and must work long hours to make minimum wage. They receive no health-care or retirement benefits, no vacation time and no job protection, he said.

“The current system exploits new immigrants. All we’re asking for is open competition,” he said.

So, it’s going to be Black November for the Republicans, right? Well, not really.

The Democrats are acting like it is going to be their version of 1994: Then, Republicans made a 54-seat gain in the House and netted 8-seats in the Senate to take control of Congress. But their confidence is also their error. If the Democrats fail to recapture either chamber, which is the most likely scenario, then what does that say about the future of a party that cannot win when its opponent is at its worst? If Democrats manage to stay in minority status after November it says far more about Democrats than it does about Republicans. If they manage to take control it’s no big deal; after all, they are supposed to win, right?

In the senate, Democrats would have to take all five of the “contentious” Republican seats and manage to pick-up a sixth seat elsewhere while avoiding losing any incumbents of their own.

Prospects for the House aren’t much brighter for Democrats. The Congressional Quarterly projects that only 24 seats currently held by Republicans are competitive and 16 of those still favor the Republican incumbents. Again, with just 8 toss-ups, and needing a net gain of twice that, things aren’t looking all that good for the Democrats. The Quarterly also lists 11 competitive Democratic seats

Michael Barone of U.S. News and World Report rightly points out, “In the five House elections from 1996 to 2004, there has been very little variation in the popular vote percentages for both parties. The Republican percentage of the popular vote for the House has fluctuated between 49 and 51 percent, the Democratic percentage between 46 and 48.5 percent. This has been true despite great differences in the job ratings of the parties’ leading figures.”

While only 23 percent of Americans approved of how Congress was doing its job, Americans still approved of how their congressional representative was handling his or her job by a margin of 53 percent to 31 percent… which bodes well for the incumbents and the majority party.

Taking all of us to the cleaners?? Puhhhhh-leaase!!!!!

From 1913 to 2001 the national debt limit was only raised twice. As soon as George W Bush and the Bush Republicans gained total control they’ve raised the national debt limit 5 times in 5 years from $6 trillion to an astonishing $$$9 TRILLION DOLLARS!!!

And he just signed another $70 Billion dollars of tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires.

Do you have any idea how large of a number just 1 billion is?

Here’s a way for you to think of it. Suppose you borrow 1 Billion dollars and you get an interest free loan. ZERO interest. The only thing you have to do is start paying it back in one year. After one year you pay 1 dollar every second. How long would it take you to pay back 1 billion dollars?

    I’ll do the math for you 60 seconds x 60 minutes x 24 hours x 365 days x 31.7 years = approx 1 billion.

So 1 Trillion dollars at the same rate of 1 dollar per second = 317 years and the 3 trillion dollars would take almost 1,000 years to pay back at the rate of $1 dollar per second — interest FREE.

Of course the Red Chinese, Japanese and Koreans are not going to wait 1,000 years to get paid back, nor are they loaning us interest free money that the Bush Republicans are borrowing.

And the fucking retard Mr. Cynical thinks William Jefferson is “taking ALL of us to the cleaners” over $100,000?!?!?

They day $100,000 will be taking us to the cleaners will be a GREAT day for America. Because right now, the Bush Republicans are taking us to the Poor House.

If we leave the crooks in charge until 2008, then it will be that much easier to take the White House and BOTH houses in 2008. It’s a good strategy.

Their talking point on corruption now is a black Louisiana legislator who votes with the Republicans, William Jefferson

    A) It’s not about “Hating Bush” it’s about disagreeing his political agenda for America.
    B) Yes, they are criminals.
    C) The polling suggest Republicans will not turn out the base as strongly as previous election cycles and swing voters, independents and moderate conservatives WANT change and will not vote for Republican candidates. The staggering majority of Iraq War veterans are running as Democrats, the military is vote will not be secure in the Republican camp. All those factors combined spells Democratic control in November.

Admittedly, this is all looking into the crystal ball speculation, but none the less, the mood of the country is for change.

And, if we don’t change our direction then how far in debt can we go, how much crime can we sustain in political office, how much global warming can the Earth tolerate, how long can we stay in Iraq, how many CIA covert operations can be destroyed, how much can the NSA spy on Americans, how many reporters will be prosecuted for exercising Freedom of the Press, before it’s too late?

The polling “suggests” that a generic democrat may beat a generic Republican, but when push comes to shove, conservatives will not sit home to punish a party with whom they may be angry by allowing a party with whom they totally disagree get into power.

Furthermore, polling “suggests” there are not enough ‘mushy can’t make up my mind’ types to add to the democrat votes that would give them enough votes to beat the Republicans…. especially the incumbents.

Your party cannot rely on ‘one thing is bad so the other must be better’, because Conservatives simply don’t think that way and definitely won’t vote that way.

GBS, occasionally we have rational discussions. I hope this is one. But I think you need to understand that mainstream, middle America does not view politics through the same lens that a Seattle liberal does. And those are the voters who will not choose a democrat simply because they may be unhappy with the republican party at the moment.

Al Gore parades around the United States telling students that global warming is the direst threat humanity faces, and the scion of the Democratic Party Bill Clinton backs him up, stating, “Climate change is more remote than terror, but a more profound threat to the future of the children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren I hope all of you have.” This is the height of absurdity, and Americans will recognize it as such. “

The sad irony about the Enron convictions is that these guys’ crime in the eyes of the law was tarnishing the image of Wall Street and making the investment “sages” who played into their con look like idiots. Not for building an entire company based on a business model of government-sanctioned extortion pretending to perform a “service” that nobody wanted or needed and wrecking a vital infrastructure that worked pretty damned well before they got their fingers into it. Sure, a lot of this got set up during the Clinton years, but that, folks is because in spite of what the right-wing trolls may claim, Clinton was a CONSERVATIVE DEMOCRAT. In fact, the whole Enron collapse is one of several painful demonstrations we’ve had of the total folly of “deregulation” of vital infrastructure. It was wrong when the right first started pushing it, and it was just as wrong when the Democrats got cowed into going along.

    Reasoned conversation, you bet.

No question you and I are reading the tea leaves trying to decipher the polls, news stories, etc. I completely understand and respect your opinion regarding the incumbancy issue. Here’s where I also see a difference. It may surprise you to know I have close Republican friends that we socialize with frequently. One particular couple thinks that Ronald Reagan was the greatest president this country has ever known. While I disagree with them sharply, I do respect their opinion. I say that because just recently they were over at the house for dinner and as it always happens we discuss politics. Both of them voted for Bush twice, both of them are not going to vote for ANY Republican candidate on a national level. For all the reasons you could imagine why a conservative voter would feel betrayed by the Bush Republicans.

What’s even more illuminating is that their circle of Republican friends and family have all said privately that they are either going to cast a blank ballot on the national offices and a few have expressed a desire to vote Democrat as a protest vote.

Now, I know that’s an extremely small sampling, but I wonder if that is the mindset of some conservatives.

Either way the way I see it is this. About 30% of the population is hardcore Repub, another 30% is hardcore Dem. They will never vote for the other party.

Another 15% are either “Reagan Democrats” or a “Clinton Republicans.” That leaves about 10% independent, non-partisan or other party affiliation. I feel it’s undefined 10% and elements of the crossover voters, i.e. Reagan Democrats, that sway elections.

In today’s political environment, I see the the majority of the independent/undefined voters going Dem, say 6 out of 10 of them. The Reagan Democrats will come back to the Democrats very strongly maybe 7 out of 10.

This is just how I see it.

Over the next 5 months there will be a flurry of bad news for Republican congressmen as the Jack Abramoff cooperation continues. I have heard numbers as high as 90 Republicans in congress are potentially going to be investigated.

This negative news will continue to weigh on voters minds. Iraq cannot be solved in 5 months, Bush pulling the trigger on Iran will probably not play well given the country’s mistrust of his military leadership in Iraq, $3/gallon gas won’t help, less and less voters going without healthcare. . . I dunno, I just don’t see it happening.

However, if you are right, it is my opinion it spells the end of the Democratic party if they lose net seats in both houses. Even having a net gain won’t mean much if they cannot control at least one of the bodies of congress.

The same is true for the Republicans and in actuality they stand to lose just as badly if the Dems do control. Here’s the reason why. Congerssional investigations with subpeona powers.

Gotta run. Have a good night.

It’s not only going to take a long time time to fix the messes they’ve gotten us into, but it may take even longer to restore the trust in good government institutions administered by dedicated folks committed to public service.

Fuck, your starting to lie like JCH. Do you want me to drag up the old posts where I can show how much I made on RHAT. We can compare those time date stamps to the actual market conditions.

    Fuck head.

To prove my point further, I even told you, BEFORE IT HAPPENED, how you could have purchased NOV, made 10% and got out. I even went so far as to give you the SELL price.

Look, just because you let stocks in your portfolio tank and take your profits down the drain to a meager 8% return is not my fault. Just because your not smart enough to manage your own stocks that is your problem not mine.

The stock I’m in right now SKX.Purchased on 4/25/06 at $26.18. Almost sold for a loss last week but opted to hold on based on volume, MACD indicator. Saw it as profit taking not dumping of the stock.

You still have a chance to get in for around $27 tomorrow and ride it to $30 in the next 90 days.

Maybe a 11% gain isn’t good enough for you.

You never said YOU sold RedHat….but I told you I did @ $30.
    As for Skechers….
I bought 2,000 shares back in December of 2004 for $13.02.
I agree it will probably go to $30.
Unlike you, I rarely sell anything for a short-term capital gain. Sometimes waiting for the 1 year holding period has cost me some gains…..but the difference between paying 15% Capital Gains Tax and 37% makes it an overall No Brainer.
You may be a dickhead….but at least you are investing & risking capital.

    @ 51

I certainly did state that I sold RHAT and at how much. You know what’s interesting is that when I said I bought RHAT you said you bought it way back before I did. Now I said I bought SKX and low and behold you bought it way back when, too. Along with your oil stocks like NOV and ExxonMobil. All of those were 100+ % gains and you only manage to make 8% on your portfolio?

I call bullshit on you. You’re numbers just don’t add up.

I tell you what I’m buying right now. How about you disclose what you’re buying right NOW?

Plus, as I’ve said before, I’m in a Roth IRA, so capital gains taxes are of no consequences for my portfolio. But, you holding on to stocks that tank so you don’t have to pay a capital gains tax shows exactly how STUPID you are. Instead of paying 37% of your profit, and putting 63% of rest in your pocket you let it turn into a loss of your principle!!!

    THAT IS FUCKING STUPID!!!!

    Mr. Cynical,

as I recall, Jefferson was fingered by a neo-con who were themselves under investigation. Isn’t it convenient how in the face of all of the neo-con scandal going on in DC, one of them outs a democrat in a very conveniently timed manner (neos have mastered the art of distraction).. If he’s guilty he deserves the same justice that will be doled out to DeLay, Abramhoff, et al.

The jury is still out on that one anyway. But when the dust settles and everyone is tried, you and I can sit down together I can compare the final score (number of convictions of dems vs. neocons)… Hell, I’ll even buy you a round if the dems have HALF AS MANY convictions leveled at them.

    Regards.
