Our sage friend Stefan lays into The Stranger‘s Eli Sanders for repeating a blog report stating that Karl Rove would be indicted.

Hmm. Since Stefan has such a low tolerance for faulty predictions, I was wondering when he might get around to apologizing for this doozy…?

As I’m trying to predict how Judge Bridges might rule on Monday morning, I’m going to make a call that is contrary to the MSM. He will either use the proportional analysis as proposed by the Republicans or punt on the issue by using an even more generous standard for tossing out illegal votes that will help the Republicans.

Or perhaps, this one…?

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m predicting that Judge Bridges will set aside the election.

Just curious.

    More GOP scandals…

    14. Gone to Taiwan

The scandal: Missed this one? A high-ranking State Department official, Donald Keyser, was arrested and charged in September with making a secret trip to Taiwan and was observed by the FBI passing documents to Taiwanese intelligence agents in Washington-area meetings.

The problem: Such unauthorized trips are illegal. And we don’t have diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

The outcome: The case is in the courts.

    15. Wiretapping the United Nations

The scandal: Before the United Nations’ vote on the Iraq war, the United States and Great Britain developed an eavesdropping operation targeting diplomats from several countries.

The problem: U.N. officials say the practice is illegal and undermines honest diplomacy, although some observers claim it is business as usual on East 42nd Street.

The outcome: Little fuss here, but a major British scandal erupted after U.K. intelligence translator Katherine Gun leaked a U.S. National Security Agency memo requesting British help in the spying scheme, in early 2003. Initially charged under Britain’s Official Secrets Act for leaking classified information, Gun was cleared in 2004 — seemingly to avoid hearings questioning the legality of Britain’s war participation.

    More GOP scandals…

    16. The Boeing Boondoggle

The scandal: In 2003, the Air Force contracted with Boeing to lease a fleet of refueling tanker planes at an inflated price: $23 billion.

The problem: The deal was put together by a government procurement official, Darleen Druyun, who promptly joined Boeing. Beats using a headhunter.

The outcome: In November 2003, Boeing fired both Druyun and CFO Michael Sears. In April 2004, Druyun pled guilty to a conspiracy charge in the case. In November 2004, Sears copped to a conflict-of-interest charge, and company CEO Phil Condit resigned. The government is reviewing its need for the tankers.

    17. The Medicare Bribe Scandal

The scandal: According to former Rep. Nick Smith (R-Mich.), on Nov. 21, 2003, with the vote on the administration’s Medicare bill hanging in the balance, someone offered to contribute $100,000 to his son’s forthcoming congressional campaign, if Smith would support the bill.

The problem: Federal law prohibits the bribery of elected officials.

The outcome: In September 2004, the House Ethics Committee concluded an inquiry by fingering House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas), saying he deserved “public admonishment” for offering to endorse Smith’s son in return for Smith’s vote. DeLay has claimed Smith initiated talks about a quid pro quo. The matter of the $100,000 is unresolved; soon after his original allegations, Smith suddenly claimed he had not been offered any money. Smith’s son Brad lost his GOP primary in August 2004.

    by Goldy, 11/02/2004, 10:57 AM

Still waiting for some definitive exit polling leaks, but Norm Ornstein just reported on the Al Franken Show that “we have never seen turnout like this before.” He refused to reveal more than that, but past experience would say that is good news for Kerry.

Early exit polls favor Kerry… Virginia in play
    by Goldy, 11/02/2004, 11:43 AM

Early exit poll numbers from MyDD via dailyKOS:

AZ CO LA PA OH FL MI NM MN WI IA NH
    Kerry 45 48 42 60 52 51 51 50 58 52 49 57
    Bush 55 51 57 40 48 48 47 48 40 43 49 41
I can’t vouch for their accuracy, or meaning. But I’d rather have meaningless, inaccurate data in Kerry’s favor than in Bush’s. History shows that early numbers tend to favor Republicans, but clearly, Kerry is not going to win PA by 20 points, so take these numbers with a grain of salt. And a couple aspirin.

One other interesting thing to note is that Zogby now shows Virginia a dead heat!

    All this bodes well.

    Goldy,

Not defending Stefan, but he was making predictions. Jason Leopold was supposedly reporting facts from ‘multiple’ sources. Big difference. It would have been one thing if Stefan would had said “I have sources that say Bridges will overturn the election”.

    Leopold said on Friday:

“Within the last week, Karl Rove told President Bush and Chief of Staff Joshua Bolten, as well as a few other high level administration officials, that he will be indicted in the CIA leak case and will immediately resign his White House job when the special counsel publicly announces the charges against him, according to sources.”

Again, not a prediction, but reported as fact. What I don’t understand is why everyone in certain quarters of the blogosphere ran with this in the first place. Leopold been reporting “Rove indicted” for months, and also called it wrong about ’22 indictments’ coming down in October. I’m not saying it can’t or won’t happen, but news that big will be plastered all over the place.

Sorry, but I disagree. Unless you are suggesting that Leopold was making up things (doubtful), then it means his sources were speculating or somebody mislead them intentionally, or…just maybe the reports are accurate (I believe there is some time left on the clock for empirically testing the hypothesis….).

I think the point about Stefan is that his predictions were about six standard deviations removed from reality–he could not have been more wrong. Goldy’s points is about being embarassingly wrong. Stefan was embarassingly wrong during the election contest. Leopold might be embarassingly wrong. We’ll see!

Rove may or may not be indicted in the near future. It’s pretty hard to tell the future on this one. But who is the anonymous source for this story? Apparantly somebody in the White House? Why in the world would they want to leak a story like this? Unless….

    (a) it is true, and they wanted to get it out early so it doesn’t have as much of a “surprise” impact.

    (b) Dick Cheany (or his minions) leaked it, because there is a power struggle going on in the White House, and Cheany thought he could get some advantage if people thought Rove would soon be powerless. It is quite possible that Cheaney and Rove are pointing fingers at each other in the investigation, and one or the other will eventually be indicted.

    (c) Rove himself leaked it. Why? because if he leaks it and the report doesn’t pan out in the near future, then subsequent reports about him will be less likely to be published. It’s pretty much the same tactic I believe he used in the Bush/Guard/60 Minute Memo caper. By “leaking” a seemingly damaging memo to the press, and then quickly proving it to be a forgery, he gets the press to back off the issue entirely, while the press gets all the blame. With respect to the Rove Indictment leak, he gets the additional benefit of keeping the Democrats and press distracted, waiting for the announcement, while he prepares the hammer blows of lies and innuendo in time for his regularly scheduled pre-election cycle.

Why be so snide? Common political sense would tell you that if somebody as high up as Rove is about to indicted, you would not see or hear anything from him, period. Rove may good/evil/whatever, but he’s not that dumb. (Well, unless he lied to the grand jury)

When I you the following on Daily Kos: “Does this mean Jason Leopold is wrong in his claims regarding the Plame investigation leading to an indictment of Karl Rove? No. Does it mean that he’s a reliable source, and someone from whom one should expect credibility, integrity, and care with sources? I think that answer is obvious, but again, I’ll let you draw your own conclusion.”

What conclusion would you make about Leopold and his stories?

This is just such a classic example of Goldy. Leopold has advanced this “Onion” like story something like 12 times in the past year. Every time it’s been Leopold’s own little fantasy. Goldy hears the clicking of thousands of good little Moonbat party members using their BlackBerrys to spread the gospel from the MTLA and he regurgitates the story here at HA.

Then, when Leopold is exposed as a liar yet again, rather than admit that he bought the story hook, line and sinker, Goldy tries to divert attention to one of his detractors. And the reason for Goldy’s rage against Sound Politics is that by comparison, Horses Ass has far less readership. Envy.

Goldy is pathetically transparent and consumed by his own narcissism. Need another example? Look a few posts back. The newspapers run a story about Goldy’s cheerleading efforts for Darcy Burner, and the first thing he mentions is that he got his daughter’s teddy bear in the picture.

No, common sense wouldn’t tell you that. Rove’s actions provide no information either way, since there are numerous competing explanations for why Rove would make an appearance with our without certainty over a potential indictment.

“What conclusion would you make about Leopold and his stories?”

I draw no conclusions about Leopold. Goldy’s post was not really about Leopold. It was about Sharkansky posting embarassing statements on his blog.

Here’s what KKK said. My source? KKK’s own big mouth.

Perhaps in your childhood you were never spanked or ridiculed. Your parents likely isolated you from all criticism and sarcasm…hence, you morphed into the LIBERAL PINHEAD you are today.

Commentby Mr. Cynical— 5/10/06@ 9:49 pm

So, by the Konservative Krime Klowns analogy, the way to raise a republican is to: Spank, ridicule, criticize, and project sarcasm on your children.

Well, that explains everything about Bush, Cheney, JCH, Mr Cynical, Rufus, Janet S. and the rest of the conservatives. They were humiliated children who grew up to be angry, spiteful, anti-social, hateful adults.

This statement certainly validates the study done in Berkeley that well adjusted children grow up to be Liberals, while whiny, snot-nosed, piss-ant kids grow up to be Konservative Krime Klowns.

    Thanks, Mr Cynical.

“Goldy hears the clicking of thousands of good little Moonbat party members using their BlackBerrys to spread the gospel from the MTLA and he regurgitates the story here at HA.”

Goldy regurgitates the story? Huh? Where? You mean a one-sentence factual statement with a link to the story is “regurgitating?” Come on, Classic…put your fucking brain cells to work (all 6 of them) and THINK, THINK, THINK, before you spew.

“Then, when Leopold is exposed as a liar yet again, rather than admit that he bought the story hook, line and sinker, Goldy tries to divert attention to one of his detractors.”

What the fuck???? You sure read a lot into one factual sentence that Goldy posted. I don’t find any evidence that (1) Goldy represented the content of the Truthout stroy as fact or (2) that Goldy is trying to divert anything. Here is a clue for ya, Classic Idiot, Goldy’s post was entirely intended to be a cheap shot at Sharkansky.

“And the reason for Goldy’s rage against Sound Politics is that by comparison, Horses Ass has far less readership. Envy.”

Nope…seen him live. He is opaque. No smoke and mirrors, no makeup. Just opaque.

“and consumed by his own narcissism.”

Leaving aside the mix metaphor, what are you really getting at here? You mean, Goldy has the audacity to write about himself in his own on-line journal? How dare he!

“Need another example? Look a few posts back. The newspapers run a story about Goldy’s cheerleading efforts for Darcy Burner, and the first thing he mentions is that he got his daughter’s teddy bear in the picture.”

The scandal: Bush and many officials in his administration made false statements about Iraq’s military capabilities, in the months before the United States’ March 2003 invasion of the country.

The problem: For one thing, it is a crime to lie to Congress, although Bush backers claim the president did not knowingly make false assertions.

The outcome: A war spun out of control with unknowable long-term consequences. The Iraq Survey Group has stopped looking for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

So, there must be some other reason why uSP will not mention the Presidente’s crackpot speech.
