Rep. Tom DeLay has decided to step down from the House, rather than face an unwinnable reelection campaign.

The decision came just three days after his former deputy chief of staff, Tony C. Rudy, pleaded guilty to conspiracy and corruption charges, telling federal prosecutors of a criminal enterprise being run out of DeLay’s leadership offices.

  3. Even if he resigns, it could be difficult for him to get off the ballot as the GOP nominee:

  4. Ironically, DeLay had an extremely safe seat before he got the Texas legislature to redraw the U.S. House districts. Now it is just reasonably Republican leaning — not enough to re-elect a damaged Republican like himself.

  5. At least the House GOP was smart enough to replace DeLay — an alleged Republican criminal — with a victim of a Democrat criminal in the Majority Leader position. That post is now occupied by John Boehner, who has the $700,000 or so judgment against Jim McDermott related to illegal wiretapping.

    If by “they” you mean the House Ethics committe, “they” never investigated McDermott either. McDermott was found guilty in court. Delay’s case is still pending, so we’ll have to see where the comparison ends.

  61. McDermott is innocent of all charges and civil misdeeds. THat’s why he is being assessed a fine of $700,000. Might have been cheaper to go to court and gotten a real verdict, rather than going the civil route.

  62. The damages assessed against McDermott were about $60,000. The rest are statutory attorneys’ fees. They add up when you go up to the Court of Appeals a couple of times.

    I’m not very impressed with McDermott generally, as I think he is too much of a loose cannon, and not very effective. I much prefer my Congressman, Inslee. McDermott should have broadcast the tape on the floor of the House. He would probably be entitled to immunity for statements made there, and he would not have looked so sneaky.
