  2. There were some pretty good comments about pensions in the previous thread. There have been and will be future collapses of pesnion plans as GM and Ford (just to name two) are about at the end of the line when it comes to meeting pension liabilities. Don’t count on the government’s Pension Benefit Guarantee Corporation to pick up the slack either. They’ve been decimated by United’s failure and others.

    If any of you aren’t doing IRAs, I urge you to get one started. Starting earlier, even with a small amount, is always waiting for later.

    Well, the “debate” with you has been revealing to say the least. I’ve asked extremely pointed questions of you, Mr. Cynical, and conservatives in general, about the SPECIFIC language used in the Constitution.

    The end result? You avoided giving the very pointed and specific answers dictated by the questions. There are only two conclusions that I can come to as to why answering the questions with facts were avoided.

    1) My first opinion is that they lack the knowledge base to answer the questions posed. In order to answer those kinds of pointed questions about the Constitution, it would require that the respondent to have spent some time reading and studying factually accurate books on the subject on the formation of the Constitutions and the political debates surrounding it. You’d also have to have an understanding of the Articles of Confederation and how the transition from the Articles of Confederation to the Constitution had inherent legal contradistinctions. It would also require you to understand the thinking of the era regarding religion and politics and how very different it is today. Whether or not our founding fathers were Christian or Deists or something else, none of them wanted an interaction between religion and government. A “wall of separation between church and state,” if you will.

    Or, the other reason:

    2) To answer the questions with truthfulness and fact would degrade their position in the debate, forcing them to acquiesce to the correct thinking of the political left. What reason would someone shun the truth in favor of their own ideological political beliefs? The answers can be found in the 7 Deadly Sins: Greed, Gluttony, Envy, Sloth, Lust, Wrath, and PRIDE. Especially, PRIDE. So full of PRIDE that you WILL NOT change your position, even though the facts of the matter are contrary to your beliefs.

    Mr. Cynical asked this question of me: “So GBS, you take these things oh so seriously that what you are doing about it is Blogging?? That you are wasting time and space in a petty argument with JCH???”

    First of all, Mr. Cynical, you may consider lying as a “petty argument,” but I see it as a far more serious matter. Particularly, when someone like JCH blatantly lies, and in so doing tries to make me out as the LIAR. I do take exception to the “politics of personal destruction.” Why should I stand idly by while JCH tries to convince others that I’m the LIAR, when clearly he is the culprit?

    Secondly, Mr. Cynical, when you are directly challenged to an intellectual debate you resort to the same, worn out, boring playbook: cut and paste from right-wing websites and dumb it down to hurling insults. When you can match the challenge of elevated debate and enter the arena of ideas, let me know, I’ll be more than willing to take you on. In the meantime, I’ll just continue having my fun by exposing the lies and the lying liars who tell them.

    Corporate pensions don’t have to collapse. This didn’t happen by itself. It’s not an Act of God, or anything. Corporations are welshing their pension obligations to workers because:

    1. Of permissive accounting rules that allowed them to underfund their pension funds, and to mislead investors about the real cost of their pension obligations,

    2. Of partisan manipulation of bankruptcy laws to encourage corporations to file bankruptcy to avoid their pension obligations and break their union contracts.

    Government regulators (including the Clinton administration) and FASB are responsible for (1); Bush and the GOP Congress are responsible for (2).

    The pension crisis is largely a made-in-GOP deal, although as I mentioned above, the Clinton folks were complicit in turning a blind eye to scammy accounting practices.

    I read somewhere that if corporations had honestly reported their pension costs, most of them would not have reported ANY profits during the 1990’s “economic boom.” Those profits were a chimera.

    I’m leaving on evening of the 24th on British Airways to London. The family and I are going to spend some a few days in London then head down to Florence, Italy for 10 days. I have a passion for the Medachi art collection that I must see.

    Ex-CIA Op: U.S. Could Destroy Iran’s Nukes
    A former senior CIA operative says the U.S. can easily destroy Iran’s nuclear facilities with bunker-busting bombs and other weapons.
    “We can dig those things out. We can destroy them,” Gary Berntsen, who led the search for Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan in late 2001, told The Jerusalem Post.
    “We can take care of it in a couple of days with air strikes and they wouldn’t be able to stop us.
    “It wouldn’t be difficult to plan. There’d be some dangers but I think the United States can do it.”
    Berntsen, who left the CIA last June after more than 20 years of service, ruled out covert action because of the size of Iran’s nuclear program.
    “This is a huge system of facilities they have. This is not going to be a small sort of engagement,” he told the Post. “We are probably going to have to destroy 30 facilities in 30 locations. Or at least 15.”
    Berntsen also ruled out a ground operation.
    “This is huge country. There are 70 million people. We don’t need to be getting into something like that.”
    But despite U.S. capabilities, Berntsen believes that America should exhaust all political options before carrying out a strike.
    “We should do what we’re doing right now. That means taking them to the United Nations and [making] this ‘the world against Iran,’ because the Iranians appear determined to create a weapon.
    “The Iranians have to know that we mean business,” added Berntsen, author of the best-selling book “Jawbreaker” about the search for bin Laden after al-Qaida’s 9/11 attacks.
    “They will either disarm or we will destroy their facilities. No ifs, ands, or buts. They present a threat to peace in the Middle East. They present a threat to Israel. We cannot accept that.”
    Former Pentagon adviser Richard Perle said earlier this month that Iran’s prime nuclear facilities could be devastated in one night by a small fleet of U.S. B-2 bombers.
