Looks like the state GOP damage control efforts are kicking into high gear, feeding information to our good friend Stefan at (un)Sound Politics. Stefan complains that this is not a “fake” sex offender postcard at all, but actually represents a real live sex offender from Pierce County.
Oh. Well forgive me for not figuring that out. Stupid me (and Jon and Richard) were looking in Clark, Walla Walla, Kitsap, and King counties… you know… where the bulk of the postcards were actually mailed. You see, when we read the bold print at the top that said “This violent predator lives in your community” we just assumed the state GOP meant the community of the person receiving the postcard. Silly us.
Rep. Bill Grant represents the 16th Legislative District in faraway Walla Walla County. I sincerely doubt his constituents consider Pierce County to be their community.
Of course, then Stefan tries to switch the discussion off his GOP overlords getting caught in a disgusting and irresponsible dirty trick, and move onto the Republican meme that Democrats are soft on crime:
I suspect that part of the reason that the Ds wanted lesser sentences for offenders who are known to their victims is not, as publicly stated, to ensure more convictions of creepy uncles, but to protect teachers who prey on their students.
You know what Stefan… fuck you. If you actually believe that Dems would protect teachers unions over sexually abused children then you are just plain sick. And if you don’t believe it, then your are as dishonest and conscienceless as the GOP operatives who designed and executed this disgusting fear campaign.

What the Times wants goes way beyond what the Washington Supreme Court said newspapers are entitled to.

WASHINGTON — Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman may be some Republicans’ idea of a good Democrat, but a growing number of fellow party members in his home state couldn’t disagree more.
“It’s at the point where he’s no longer interested in his own party’s opinion, he’s really out of touch with reality,” said Mitchell Fuchs, chairman of the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee in Connecticut. “For me, he’s crossed the line a number of times.”
Passions flared after Lieberman’s recent trip to Iraq. Upon his return, the three-term senator pointed to what he views as progress on the ground there and suggested that Democrats should avoid harsh criticisms of President Bush’s Iraq policy.
In turn, Republicans and administration officials, including Bush, used the senator’s comments to bolster their case for war and underscore Lieberman’s differences with other Democratic leaders on the issue. Republicans have since charged that Democrats lack a coherent, unified message on Iraq.
The series of events has sparked petitions and protests outside of Lieberman’s district office in Hartford and prompted a potential challenge from a former and formidable political foe.
Dr. E spews:
That’s okay Mark, it ain’t a simple matter of “libruls” getting taken down. Martin has suffered for most of his term due to the ongoing sponsorship investigations. Guilty or not, his party suffered in the polls. That doesn’t make liberalism (Canadian style) a failure, unless of course you believe that corruption is built in to the concept of Canadian liberalism and does not exist elsewhere in Canadian politics.
But hey — there’s one of the benefits of the parliamentary system: you don’t have to wait till the next election cycle to force a sitting government out. Something tells me that, if we had a similar system down here, the Bushies would be out on their keisters next week.
Dr. E spews:

TORONTO — Jane Creba, 15, was browsing the Boxing Day sales with her older sister when she started crossing the street to look for sneakers. She stepped into a spray of gunfire between rival teenage gangs in the middle of the busy downtown shopping district.
Creba died from a single bullet, and six other people were wounded. The Dec. 26 incident climaxed a year of sensational shootings here, propelling the issue of gun violence to the top of the national debate during an election season.
A woman leaves flowers at the downtown Toronto site where Jane Creba was shot while shopping with her sister a day after Christmas. Crime has become a hot campaign issue leading up to parliamentary elections next Monday. (By Frank Gunn — Canadian Press Via Associated Press)

The death of the bright 10th-grader brought a call by Prime Minister Paul Martin for a ban on handguns, which are already tightly regulated. It also prompted a chorus of demands for tougher laws and more police in a country that prides itself on safety and moderation.
“It never used to be like this,” said Mabel Clarke, 74, who lives downtown. “You used to be able to walk on the main street, even at night. Now I can’t walk anywhere without looking over my shoulder.”
Toronto posted a 15-year high in the rate of homicides with firearms in 2005, and the press and the public have begun to fret that the country is becoming infected by the lethal ways of the United States.
“Canadians deserve safe streets. Toronto isn’t Detroit. Vancouver isn’t south Los Angeles,” Martin said. “We are not going to allow our cities to fall into mindless violence.”

Anti-U.S. Tack Backfires On Canada’s Liberals
By Doug Struck
Washington Post Foreign Service
Saturday, January 21, 2006; A12
BURLINGTON, Canada — Rob Hlohinec, 58, doesn’t see what’s so bad about Americans. He even admits to knowing some.
“I’ve talked to Americans. They want the same things we want,” Hlohinec said as he watched a Conservative Party campaign rally in this Ontario town last week.
At his side, Irene Heller, 82, agreed. She said that was one reason she would vote to replace the government headed by the Liberal Party’s Paul Martin in Canadian national elections on Monday. Martin, she said, uses anti-Americanism to try to win votes.
“He gets votes when he knocks America, and I don’t approve of that,” said Heller, who braved a sleet storm to attend the rally.
Heller’s and Hlohinec’s candidate, Conservative leader Stephen Harper, holds a strong lead in public opinion polls, fueled largely by dissatisfaction with 12 years of Liberal rule. Among the dissatisfied are voters unhappy with the growing divide between Canada and the United States.
Polls show a deep antipathy among Canadians toward the Bush administration, made more acute by the invasion and occupation of Iraq. That has carried over to a more general anti-Americanism, and academics here have made a cottage industry of talking about the divergence of values between Canadians and Americans.
Martin sought to corral that sentiment by portraying Harper as dangerously pro-American. But the strategy appeared to backfire in this campaign, exacerbating his slide in the polls.
“In the last campaign, those attack ads worked. This time they won’t. People are just fed up,” said Peter Bryce, 46, a financial manager who said the political rally in this town west of Toronto was the first he had attended.
The Conservative Party’s lead in the polls hovers at about 10 percentage points, putting the party in position to lead a coalition government that would probably be more in tune with the Bush administration.
The Liberal Party’s attack on Harper’s American sympathies was mostly political posturing; Martin himself has sought good relations with the United States. But his party has a mixed history on the issue. The prime minister had to expel one member of Parliament who stomped on a Bush doll on television, and a spokeswoman for his Liberal Party predecessor, Jean Chretien, referred to the American president as a “moron.”
The Liberals were resorting to a campaign tactic that had worked before; they successfully erased Harper’s lead in the polls in the last election, in 2004, by painting him as too pro-American. But this time, some Canadians say they feel the anti-Americanism has gone too far.

Castro offers eye care for US poor
by
Monday 23 January 2006 7:59 PM GMT
The Cuban leader has been a bitter foe of the United States
Fidel Castro, the Cuban president, has offered free eye operations to impoverished Americans and asked the US government to let them travel to his country for treatment.
Castro made the offer late on Sunday as he criticised American policies toward his country during a three-hour appearance on state television and announced a protest march for Tuesday outside the American embassy in Havana.
Because travel to Cuba by most Americans is prohibited under US sanctions, Castro asked US authorities to give Americans official permission to travel to Cuba for the operations.
“We’re ready to send an airplane to Florida to pick them up,” Castro said. Cuba would foot the costs of flights, accommodation and the surgery, Castro said.
Cuba has all the equipment and specialised personnel considered among the best specialists in the world, he said. He asked if the US government would prohibit those people from travelling to the island and “sentence them to blindness”.
However, political relations between America and Cuba are worsening so American approval to let its citizens travel – even for health reasons – appeared unlikely.
Cuba teamed up with Venezuela in recent months for a free eye surgery programme that brings impoverished people from around the region to the island for free treatment.
Venezuela, meanwhile, recently expanded its programme to provide subsidised heating oil to poor Americans

TIME MAGAZINE: BUSH LIED ABOUT RELATIONSHIP WITH ABRAMOFF
“As details poured out about the illegal and unseemly activities of Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff, White House officials sought to portray the scandal as a Capitol Hill affair with little relevance to them. … ‘The President does not know him, nor does the President recall ever meeting him,’ McClellan said.
“The President’s memory may soon be unhappily refreshed. TIME has seen five photographs of Abramoff and the President that suggest a level of contact between them that Bush’s aides have downplayed. …
“In one shot that TIME saw, Bush appears with Abramoff, several unidentified people and Raul Garza Sr., a Texan Abramoff represented who was then chairman of the Kickapoo Indians, which owned a casino in southern Texas. Garza, who is wearing jeans and a bolo tie in the picture, told TIME that Bush greeted him as “Jefe,” or “chief” in Spanish. Another photo shows Bush shaking hands with Abramoff in front of a window and a blue drape. The shot bears Bush’s signature, perhaps made by a machine. Three other photos are of Bush, Abramoff and, in each view, one of the lobbyist’s sons (three of his five children are boys). A sixth picture shows several Abramoff children with Bush and House Speaker Dennis Hastert, who is now pushing to tighten lobbying laws after declining to do so last year when the scandal was in its early stages.”

I’m not condoning what the GOP did, but the guy they used is a really bad guy. I think if you do a search at the news tribune you will find a couple of articles on him from a couple of years ago.
Here is a suggestion. How about coming up with a good solution as to what to do with these guys? Just bashing others ideas does not really accomplish anything.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Our Libertarian buddy, Richard “Can’t Win an Election” Pope, has fingered the guy in the photo as Leroy Alvin York, a child molester residing in Pierce County.
http://pso.co.pierce.wa.us/3/yorkla.htm
“The fellow … was convicted of his child sex crimes in Pierce County Superior Court No. 82-1-00357-5. And he was just convicted of a drug possession offense two years ago in Pierce County Superior Court No. 04-1-00030-2. Apparently, he did serve a substantial stretch in the Washington state prison system, since his parole was apparently revoked sometime in 1985 and he did not register as a sex offender until March 3, 2002. Comment by Richard Pope— 1/23/06 @ 2:24 pm”
ROGER RABBIT POLL
The Republicans concealed Leroy Alvin York’s identity because:
[ ] 1. They’re afraid he’ll sue them for harassment,
[ ] 2. They’re too lazy to copy and paste a different photo for each legislative district,
[ ] 3. They got a bulk printing rate by using the same flyer for the entire state,
[ ] 4. They don’t want voters to know this guy doesn’t live in their community,
[ ] 5. They’ve got an office betting pool going on who’ll finger him first,
[ ] 6. They don’t want him arrested before he can reoffend,
[ ] 7. All of the above.
Roger Rabbit spews:
Now, you may ask, why wouldn’t the Republicans want him arrested BEFORE he reoffends? Simple. So they can blame his next crime on the Democrats — which won’t work if a Democratic prosecutor in a Democratic county puts him in jail.

Let’s examine these figures. First of all, we can safely assume that most of the 20% (approximately 12,250 people) who said they’d switch their vote from Kerry to Bush are Republican liars who voted for Bush in Nov. 2004, so what we see here is roughly 25% of the electorate switching their vote from Bush to Kerry. Moonbat Poll: Are you more concerned about:
1) Iraq
2) Iran
The two countries provide textbook perfect examples of two competing ways of the civilized world dealing with evil.
With Iraq, we saw evil and called it what it was. We went in and destroyed their ability to make war. Our victory is totally assured and very nearly complete.
With Iran, we see the moonbat way. France, Germany, the UN and American moonbats sought to understand the mullahs and their feeeelings. Words were spoken. Papers were written. Empty and meaningless threats were made. Iranian leadership see it for what it is and say “Fuck You Weak Spineless Assholes”. This approach goes back to the ’70s when Nobel Prize winning Worst President Of The Twentieth Century began the noble tradition of letting Iran get away with bullshit.

MTR @ 39
I’m actually more concerned about the current administration’s belligerent stand against both nations. For starters, I think your argument about Iraq is more or less negated by the fallacy from which it proceeds: that we invaded Iraq to rid the country/region of evil. This eventually was one of the administration’s stated objective, which came after a long list of failed rationales: the “gathering and real” danger of Iraqi WMD’s, the supposed links with al-Qaeda, etc.
Vis à vis Iran, I think it’s pretty clear that this administration has had this nation in its sights for quite some time — certainly for several years preceding this most recent election? Why? People more knowledgeable than me have speculated, whether it be pressure from agents of Israel within the government (I mean “agent” in its generic sense, i.e. someone who acts on behalf of, or advocates a position for a party), whether it be to broaden the strategic US presence in the region, perhaps to have more secure access to the Caspian Sea oil bed, etc. Whatever the reasoning, I think any military action against Iran — which I hate to add is probably inevitable at this point — will have disastrous consequences both for the region as well as for the American presence in that part of the world.
If you’d like to know what “moonbats” have been thinking about this, well, a lot of us have been reading, digesting expert opinions, examining the recent past of the country (remember Mossadeq?). This ain’t exactly taking the “emotional” pulse of the mullahs — I couldn’t really give two shits what they feel — but rather a critical examination of the motives of the various parties involved: the Iranian government and its factions, the US and Israel, the Iranian electorate, and so forth.
By the way, to see a real, certifiable “moonbat” in action on this matter, you’d do well to check out Amy Goodman’s reporting on this matter. It’s an eye opener, to be sure.
Dr. E spews:
Just a quick quote from the link posted above:
“AMY GOODMAN: Do you see military confrontation between the U.S. and Iran in the near future, Professor Abrahamian?
ERVAND ABRAHAMIAN: Yes. I think that the neo-cons have made it no secret for years that they want to deal with Iran. And they clearly — one idea was somehow the public was — they’re going to become American-loving and all love-dovey with United States and give up the nuclear program, and so on. That’s obviously been shattered. And there’s, I think, — they already have basically blueprints about military strikes for the nuclear installations. They also have plans, what they call elite decapitation, which would be surgical strikes at ministries of the top people. And that would be basically a sort of slippery slope they would start on. They would think that doing that that would prevent Iran developing the nuclear program, not taking into account that Iran also has its own cards it could play. If that was done, if any military action was implemented, I think that the Iranians would use the cards they have, which is in Afghanistan and Iraq, both areas, they have actually great advantages. They could unravel the already bad position the United States is in those countries, completely unravel it. All they have to do is give the green light to Sadr in southern Iraq to have a Shia revolt. He has been itching to do that with a lot of help from his friends from across the border in Iran.
AMY GOODMAN: Who?
ERVAND ABRAHAMIAN: Sadr. Sadr. That you would have a Shia revolt in the south on top of a Sunni revolt. And that would completely undermine the U.S. position there. In Afghanistan, there is actually one of the old warlords who was against the Taliban, Hekmatyar, who the Iranians tried to encourage to support and work with the Karzai administration, but he refused to do that and went on his own into the mountains. And he would be quite eager to get Iranian help, if the Iranians decided to change policy in Iraq. It’s often forgotten here that Iran has actually done everything it can so far to help United States in both Iraq and Afghanistan. And if there’s a confrontation, military confrontation, there would be no reason for them to cooperate with United States. They would do exactly what would be in their interests, which would be to destroy the U.S. position in those two countries.”
Dr. E spews:
So, Bushco would pretty much be shooting itself in the foot in undertaking military misadventure in Iran, but that’s something the ideologues probably won’t see. Their view of the world as they’d make it is pretty much untrammeled by the exigencies of reality.

Many regions of the world view the USA as a ‘big, strong upstart’ as they have thousands of years in existance with their cultures in place and we haven’t yet gotten to 300 years of age. They do appreciate and even envy what the USA has but they do not want to be bullied to change their entire way of being to meet the USA’s ‘standards’. I have said many times before and I will continue, the only way that the USA can be accepted (especially in the Persian Gulf) is if we go there to help with infrastructures, schools, hospitals, transit, etc. They see us as trying to change their entire way of being. We need to have a much more focussed vision of the future and not just what is happening today. We will never change their way of being in our lifetimes! If we work to help bring these underprivelaged nations up to a decent standard of infrastructure just maybe in our grandchildren’s lives the world will be a better place. If we continue to pick and choose our fights for our own personal gains our grandchildren might not even be around!

Did you bother to read this article? You bash the union, but the article says:
“When The Seattle Times asked the Bellevue School District for information about teachers and coaches accused of sexual misconduct, school officials and the state’s most powerful union teamed up behind the scenes to try to hide the files.”
“… school officials AND the … union …” Hmmmmm.
Why do you suppose the school district and union are working together to oppose the Seattle Times’ demand for records? The answer is found in the quote above, and the operative word is “accused.” Not guilty, but “accused.”
The Seattle Times, in its own article, admits its lawyer “argued that the public had a right to see all complaints, even those that were not pursued by officials or that did not result in a reprimand.” Hmmmmmm.
The article refers to Brouillet v. Cowles Publishing Co., 114 Wn.2d 788, 791 P.2d 526 (1990) (http://mrsc-web.mrsc.org/mc/co.....2d0788.htm). This decision does not support the newspaper’s argument. It involved a different newspaper’s request for records of teachers whose teaching certificates had been revoked.
It’s one thing to ask for records of teachers guilty of misconduct, but quite another thing to publish the names of teachers who were accused but not disciplined, either because of insufficient evidence of guilt, or an affirmative finding of innocence. In other words, the Seattle Times is making no distinction between guilty or innocence.
No wonder BOTH the school district and the teachers’ union are objecting!
Basically, what you are saying, Uncritical Thinker, is that the Seattle Times should be allowed to blacken the names of teachers, regardless of guilt or innocence, simply because someone accused that. That “someone” might be a student seeking revenge for a deserved bad grade, or retaliating for a teacher’s action of reporting the student for disruptive behavior — it happens all the time.
You may not have intended to do that, but so eager are you to find any excuse to bash the union, you shot from the hip without even reading the article, much less the court decision cited in the article. Typical wingnut lack of intelligence or integrity.
A good phrase to describe your post is “intellectually dishonest.”
Roger Rabbit spews:
44 (continued)
As citizens, we must insist on Zero Tolerance of teachers who have sex with students. These teachers should be prosecuted, jailed, registered as sex offenders, and never be allowed to set foot in a classroom again, anywhere, for the rest of their lives. This goes even if the student came on to the teacher, because teachers occupy a position of trust, and have a responsibility to say “no” to sexually aggressive kids.
But, as noted above, students are not always innocent little darlings. Teachers can be, and sometimes are, falsely accused by vicious, revenge seeking, lying students.
Defending its members against accusations is a proper function of the teachers union, or any union. When a teacher is accused of misconduct, the teacher is entitled to a fair disciplinary process, and the union makes sure he or she gets one. That’s part of what a union is for, and this role is entirely legitimate.
Even one incident of sexual exploitation of a student by a teacher is too many, but to put this problem in context, Washington has roughly 55,000 teachers instructing 1 million students in about 2,200 schools. The Cowles decision said 89 teaching certificates were revoked in 10 years (approximately 1980 to 1990), or an average of less than 9 per year out of more than 50,000 teachers, for all causes. As I said, even one case of sexual exploitation is too many, but let’s not blow the problem out of proportion: Sexual exploitation of students by teachers is rare.
And to spin it into union-bashing is mean-spirited, ugly, and — a lie. By opposing the Seattle Times’ request for records, the union is trying to protect the identities of innocent teachers. There is no issue about the Times getting the names of guilty teachers; that information has been available to newspapers ever since the Cowles decision 15 years ago. The bottom line is, Uncritical Thinker is bashing the union for trying to keep innocent teachers from having themselves and their families dragged through the mud.
What a jerk.

Hey Richard, since you seem to know everything, what was his offender score? What was his standard range? If he had a felony sex crime 20+ years ago, and that was his only conviction, it likely washed. That would make his offender score zero. If his offender score was zero, his standard range was probably 0-6 months for a simple felony possession. In general, you can’t go outside the standard range.
