Wisconsin Republicans impose non-medical* rape on rape victims

by Darryl — Friday, 6/14/13, 1:29 pm

The “New and Improved” Republican War on Women™ moves to Wisconsin.

Over eight hours Thursday, Republican lawmakers passed not only the ultrasound bill but two other bills restricting access to abortion and contraception. One bans state health care plans from covering abortions and exempts religious groups from the state requirement to provide birth control insurance coverage. The other prohibits sex-selective abortions and imposes fines on physicians.

The ultrasound bill also requires abortion providers to have admitting privileges at a hospital within 30 miles of the clinic, which Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin says could force the closure of its Appleton-area clinic.

During a contentious floor session Wednesday, the Senate also passed the ultrasound bill after Republican leaders cut off debate. Gov. Scott Walker has said he will sign the bill into law. The other two abortion bills now head to the Senate, where leaders say they might not get to them until this fall, after the summer recess.
[…]

One of the amendments offered by Democrats that failed to pass would have specified that only an abdominal ultrasound could be required and not the more invasive vaginal probe.

Holy fuck, where do they dig up these troglodytes?

Among other horrible effects of these inhumane bulls, rape victims in Wisconsin will get a little bit extra rape, thanks to Gov. Walker and the esteemed G.O.P. men of the Wisconsin legislature.

Your move, women of Wisconsin….

* I updated the title to reflect the fact that an ultrasound is not medically necessary before the vast majority of abortions. Hence a bill requiring a medically unnecessary transvaginal ultrasound is, essentially, rape. The lawmakers who voted for this bill are rapists.

Sounds like every Republican wants their state to be just like Texas.

It’s been forty years since Roe, which means all the guys who know they would not be here had abortion been safe and legal in the years before their births will be in leadership roles for the next decade or so. After that, with no one to replace them, crusades like this will end. So, it’s a self-liquidating problem, it’s just not going away fast enough.

Meanwhile, the rest of us have to spend time and energy defending reporductive rights, a matter we thought was settled decades ago. Yet another tragic consequence of unintended pregnancies.

I think we’re at a point where the worse Republicans get, the better for America, because taking their foot off the brake pedal as they speed downhill toward a cliff eventually will mean no more GOP.

    Your move, women of Wisconsin….

And men. Just as white folks have an obligation to combat (and unlearn) racism, men also have an obligation to work to stop misogyny. And there are plenty of guys in Wisconsin who understand perfectly well (or ought to) how offensive and contemptuous these bills are.

“, where do they dig up these troglodytes?”

These troglodytes are not dug, they fall from Republican trees.

Steve Benen trips over another Republican road apple

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) has received quite a bit of attention this week, first for pushing a needlessly punitive anti-abortion bill he knows can’t pass, then again for claiming, “The incidence of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low.”
    […]

“Sometimes we get a little discouraged,” Franks told them. “Believe me, I’ll tell you what, I’ve been through a spin dryer here in the last 48 hours and I wish I hadn’t assisted them so much to that end. But somehow in the long run, truth and time travel the same road. And we are very blessed that the Lord that we serve will prevail in the final analysis no matter what.”

Yes, apparently we’re supposed to feel sorry for Trent Franks. The poor guy was subjected to the “spin dryer” for a few days, but he’s convinced the “truth” will prevail. (The truth is, Franks has no idea what he’s talking about, and his claims are factually untrue.)

From one of the FaceBook posts I get:

“Men should be offended when someone claims that women should prevent rape by not wearing certain things, or not going to certain places, or not behaving in a certain way.

That line of thinking makes the presumption that men are incapable of self-control. That men are so base and uncivilized that it takes extraordinary effort on their part to walk down the street without raping someone. That men require a certain dress code be adhered to by women, that certain behaviors by men be employed so that maybe today, they wont rape someone.

It assumes their natural state of being is that of a rapist.”

Andrea Dworkin would agree. But then, she was someone who promoted the idea that all heterosexual behaviors were a form of rape.

    From 8,

Well, it seems a lot of the Muslim dress code for women is based on how excitable men can get over women, especially when those men can actually see the face and hair of the women in their cultures. It seems to me these Muslim guys are really sexually repressed and afraid of their sexuality. How else do we explain their desire to cover up women so Muslim men won’t get sexually aroused.

What….you mean they aren’t delivered in the dark of night by the Republican Stork?
