Wednesday Open Thread

I am not sure how much credit to give a proposal in a politician’s press release. So maybe I am missing something. But I like the idea of continuing to bypass the design review process for affordable housing in Seattle. I don’t know how much we need the process in general, but certainly for low income housing in the middle of a homelessness crisis, extending it seems like a no brainer.

Anyway, please wash your hands right now. And get vaccinated or boosted if you’re eligible.

Our weak troll’s OCD-fueled narcissism must be such a terrible thing.

One thing about uber narcissists, they need to believe they’re the smartest person in any room they’re in. We constantly see that symptom show itself in “our room” here at HA. The weak troll needs to believe he knows more about law than attorneys and judges, and more about engineering than engineers. And no matter how many times he gets his ass handed to him, the weak troll comes back to do it again and again. Wash, rinse, repeat. He simply can’t stop.

Indeed, OCD-fueled narcissism must be a terrible thing.

Household debt soars at fastest pace in 15 years as credit card use surges, Fed report says

Households increased debt at the fastest pace in 15 years due to hefty increases in credit card usage and mortgage balances.
The credit card balance collectively rose more than 15% from the same period in 2021, the largest annual jump in more than 20 years, according to the New York Fed.

“.. it’ll try to revive itself by laying out the kneepads for its beloved deathsatanist…”

    That much is preordained.

But the part of the performance I enjoy watching is the pretense at “independent thinker” that goes before, as if it lends some credibility to the preordained choice to grovel. The one constant for the last six years has been the groveling. Nothing Trump or any of his lackys and camp followers ever said or did was enough to interrupt that.

Torture, sodomy, rape, meh. But losing an historic midterm is the one unforgivable sin. And yet even now the troll remains too cowardly to openly reject his orange daddy. It wants desperately to have a new Fat Midget daddy. But it must be oh so careful.

QoS McHillbilly has held his breath in silent hope that the Democrats would hold the House.

Is this a good time to review? Really? Whelp. Mkay. If the troll insists.
    Check the record.

I’m quite satisfied with these results. About the most optimistic I got ws predicting that the GOP House margin might be held to as few as one or two seats. Right now it looks as if my most optimistic projection is working out.

I’m a DEMOCRAT. Of course I hoped for a House hold. But I never expected it. Nor frankly, did I expect things to work out this well.
    Check the record.
Democrats held every single one of the 28 Cook Likely-D, Lean-D House seats and 69% of tossups.
What that tells us is that in terms of candidates and messaging Democrats are on the right track and have been all along.
All of the Republican gains are due entirely to redistricting. All.
They lose on message. They lose on candidates. And in districts where they haven’t been able to preselect their voters, more than two thirds of the time they lose.

So we need to fix gerrymandering. And we need to target turnout. And that means state and county level organizing becomes the focus. Everything that fuck sticks like Sean Maloney and Stephanie Murphy have stood for has been repudiated by this election. Running fake centrist campaigns by appealing to “moderate” Republicans with messages that betray constituents then attacking your fellow Democrats and your President has failed again. For me, that alone makes this election a triumph. The party can now move past Third Way and rid itself of the expensive consultant class of message testers and advertising sales people.

While over on the troll side of the aisle they will be going to war with each other over which deeply unpopular themes and candidates will define them for the next two years.

    24,
Ask yourself, is there some other, better messaging available to them now?

For sure, many Republicans will see these results for what they are and recognize that their only wins are being driven by disproportionate turnout. And they’ll call for that to be the focus. They’ll dredge up VOTER FRAUD yet again and recruit it to pass laws restricting ballot access, voting locations, and voting times. It won’t work nearly as well as in the past, because of the last two full years of The Big Lie and what that has now cost them. Many Republicans will flee from that messaging after this election.

But for the MAGA base and their leaders and candidates all that good information will be unavailable to them. They have passed beyond Teh Orange Event Horizon where those kinds of FACTS may not penetrate.

So what I suspect that means is that the larger messaging debate among Republicans will suffer a lot of disorganization and lack of leadership. And that is something we don’t see from Republicans most of the time. Different “leaders” will be advocating for different messaging depending on how they perceive their individual political advantages – alot like Democrats. I’m anticipating a breakdown in Republican message discipline that we haven’t really seen since before Gingrich. Perfect time for it.

    31,
To whatever extent I’m preoccupied with how any of us is seen or percieved, I’m preoccupied with all of us seeing that this troll is the dumbest person in the room.

Not merely because that is a true thing.

But because I really believe that spreading that message is important work to protect and advance democracy. And not for nuthin’ it’s a true thing about Republicans and conservatives in general.

None of us wants to be dumb. We all hope to be smart. And it’s generally a worthy ambition. But perhaps not the only ambition, nor the most important. I’d argue that being kind, decent, loyal, and trustworthy are probably more important to us as individuals and as a society.

We can’t very well afford to all be completely stupid. Even if we are all kind, decent, loyal, and trustworthy, we wouldn’t get far as individuals, as a species, or as a society if we are all completely stupid. We need to be at least a little bit smart, even if only on average, in order to make good use of kindness, decency, loyalty and trustworthiness.

And I’ll admit very freely that once upon a time conservatives and Republicans were generally pretty smart people, even if I still disagreed with much of what they believed. And I’ll also admit that once upon a time liberals and Democrats were generally a lot stupider than we are today. And I might even agree that at least at times, and under specific circumstances, we were dumber in general than conservatives. But that just isn’t true anymore and it really hasn’t been for a pretty long time.

But what I think is important about this is that in some crucial ways the idea, and the image of conservatives and Republicans being “smart” has stuck around and far outlived it’s usefulness, even as we have collectively begun to agree that they are most certainly not kind, or decent, or loyal, or trustworthy. Over time, perhaps in service to the myth, conservatives and Republicans came to even embrace this agreement that they are generally not kind, or decent, or loyal, or trustworthy. I think they saw that embrace as solidifying their claims to being “the smart ones”.

So here we are today, facing a political and social opposition who have for some time now embraced being cruel, indecent, disloyal, and untrustworthy as a means of propping up a cultural myth that they are nonetheless “the smartest guys in the room”.

But they aren’t. Not anymore. And not by a long shot.

The record speaks for itself. Examples abound daily and are all around us. I won’t waste my time or yours with the catalog. We all know it.

And why this matters is because empowering, in any way, a politcal minority who are stupid as fuck, and simultaneously embrace cruelty, indecency, disloyalty, and untrustworthiness is how civilizations collapse.

So I’ve been more than a little unkind myself over the years in trying to make these points. Not because I enjoy being cruel or humiliating anyone. But because it’s a powerful myth I’m attempting to destroy. Most conservatives and Republicans themselves still believe it, despite all the evidence before them. And sadly far too many of us believe it too, if only a little.
Being kind isn’t stupid or weak anymore than being cruel is smart or powerful.

We are all a lot better off being generally kind, decent, loyal, trustworthy and smart. Those are the qualities that enable us to succeed. And one way or another, whether they say it right out loud like Trump, or use code words and lies to distract from it, those are all the qualities that modern conservatives and Republicans have now come to reject.

And nothing could do more to help Democrats in 2024 than a GOP House for the next 2 years.

I must admit that it’s possible you are correct, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit.

If the GOP House impeaches Biden, it hurts the GOP.

Although the Democrats are gonna need a shit-ton of help in 2024, with 24 Senate seats (plus those of two current independents) to defend vs 10 for the GOP.

Revenue bills begin in the House, unless it’s the ACA and a perversion is repeated. The only wild spending that will occur in the next two years will be via perversions such as Biden attempted with the handout of free money to student loan borrowers. We’ll have plenty of time to watch the worsening recession resulting from the wild spending of the last two years. The GOP can sit on the purse strings and let the recession play out as it should. The Fed meddled, Robinhood Dumbfuck Rabbit has told us, and look what happened. Why should the House meddle? Just lards more debt onto the backs of YLB’s fucked kids, after all.

The Democrats will blame the recession on the GOP, because the GOP won’t spend its way out of it to help the Democrats.

    And on and on.

California had years of massive budget surpluses. Now it could face a $25 billion deficit

After back-to-back historic budget surpluses, California analysts on Wednesday projected that Gov. Gavin Newsom and state legislators could be forced to navigate a $25 billion budget deficit next year.

That shortfall, according to a new report from the state’s independent Legislative Analyst’s Office, could be followed by continued annual budgetary gaps between $17 billion and $8 billion for the subsequent three years.
    …
The projection confirms earlier warning signals. One was raised in September by Gov. Gavin Newsom when he emphasized budgetary discipline in his veto signings. Then last month, the state Department of Finance disclosed that general fund cash receipts were falling significantly short of projections.

The new forecast also coincides with some of California’s tech giants laying off double-digit percentages of their workers, citing excessive pandemic-fueled hiring blitzes, a slowdown in online commerce and a worsening economy.

Not specifically stated is the migration of higher-earning Californians into lower-tax states.

The top 1% of income-earning Californian’s pay nearly half of the state’s income taxes, according to the state’s franchise tax board.

Just think how bad the numbers gonna look come primary season.

California voters understand the Laffer Curve better than California politicians do.

    Why California’s eco-friendly, tax-the-rich electorate killed Prop. 30

These are the voters, after all, who showed no qualms just a decade ago about hiking income taxes on top earners and also hit up millionaires in 2004 to pay for mental health services. These are the California majorities who, as recently as June, told pollsters that they were either considering or had already purchased an electric car. Most named air pollution, wildfire and climate change as areas of major personal concern.

And yet the ballot measure that would have increased taxes on about 43,000 multimillionaires (on income above $2 million a year) to fund electric car rebates and combat wildfires has suffered an unambiguous defeat. In the statewide vote count as of late Wednesday, 59% rejected the proposal.

Proposition 30 would have added a 1.75% levy on annual income over $2 million, in addition to the state’s top income tax rate of 13.3%. In addition to the top federal income tax rate. When a state makes billionaires give more of their income to the government than they get to keep, billionaires choose to live in a state that doesn’t.

Texas gained two seats due to population increase over the last decade, and there were many more Hispanic supporters of GOP candidates in Texas this year compared with 2020.

Correlation does not equate to causation, girlfriend. Pull your head out of your vagina and take a fresh look at the data.

Both sides ended up with more safe seats, and fewer competitive seats, as a result of redistricting. Both sides, YLB.

If y’all wanted Texas to end up differently then fewer of y’all shoulda left New York, and more of y’all in Chicago shoulda been nicer to business. Oh, and y’all shoulda kept the border closed.

Voter support of the GOP from 2018 to 2022:

    Hildalgo County: 30.8% to 40.7%
    Cameron County: 36.9% to 45.2%
    Webb County: 28.7% to 37.7%
    Starr County: 22.8% to 40.9%
    Willacy County: 35.5% to 43.7%
    Zapata County: 37.1 to 53.3%

That’s not the effect of redistricting, girlfriend. State legislatures didn’t vote to redraw county boundaries. That’s south Texas over the last four years.

GOP vote share in 2022 increased ~ 5% over that in 2020, YLB. The number of seats held by the GOP will increase ~ 5% as well.

Careful throwing too much endzone dance behind stats the sad weak dancing freak does not understand (or conveniently refuses to think about).

Party midterm vote share is pretty closely related to presidential popular vote. It’s only relevant in terms of what it’s telling you about those voters in those places. The elections results are not determined by it. Midterm results are determined by vote share in 435 individual jurisdictions, not the national share. And presidential elections are determined by the vote share in 50 individual jurisdictions, not nationally.

So do we care what Dem midterm vote share is in the state of California?
Not as much as we care about D vote share in CA-47 or CA-22. When Republicans are moderately successful at packing and cracking, the mathematically calculated result is that they will have a larger vote share. There were 24 essentially uncontested House seats held by Republicans in this cycle, compared to just 6 by Dems. Moreover, by carefully comparing a general election vote share to a midterm, the ridiculously inept, prattling idiot is quite obviously cherry picking to his party’s advantage. Dem turnout and vote share historically falls between generals and mids. And historically, Republican vote share increases between each general election and the subsequent midterm.

The important thing about 2022 is that it continues a long term trend of this normal improvement in GOP share weakening and even reversing. When the count is complete the GOP increase from 2020 to 2022 may be 5%. But the chilling news is that it might be only 5%. All in they were tee’d up for an historic turnout advantage that never came.

The historical GOP midterm advantage is going away. Too much Ivermectin and rage drinking, combined with the dismal tyranny of demographic math. The GOP is just dying faster. And this will be yet another election in which Boomers are a dwindling minority of turnout. To make matters worse, the GOP has no message and no outreach intended to bring in any new voters. Swimsuit inspections, school gun slaughter, forced birth, $4/hr min wage, and billionaire tax cuts are not playing well to the yungins.

By the time Democrats won all four states in 2020, that margin had ballooned to 4.5 million votes nationally. “It was the first time a Democrat won those four states in 80 years,” said Rosenberg.

In 2004, Republicans controlled five of the eight Senate seats in those four states and 14 out of 21 House seats. Democrats now control all eight of those Senate seats and 14 out of 23 House seats, Rosenberg pointed out….

In the the 2022 midterm elections, Texas’ Rio Grande Valley also went overwhelmingly Democratic, noting the defeat of two highly touted Republican Hispanics, Mayra Flores and Cassy Garcia. Flores, an evangelical Republican congresswoman who won a special election in June, was defeated by a margin of 8.4% by her Democratic challenger Vicente Gonzalez.

    160,
If you engaged in fraud (and it looks like you did) you’ll be prosecuted and you’ll go to prison for a while.

But the individual depositors who gave you their money are not entitled to any expectation of recovery. They willingly put their money into the hands of a completely unregulated scheme with no evidence of any kind of credible accounting, oversight, auditing, or basic accountability. They had a limitless array of other options. They chose the worst possible option. And they did it with their eyes wide open.

    That too is moral hazard.

However, the managers and executives at regulated investment banks and funds who, faced with the exact same evidence, gave you tens of billions of dollars of their investor’s capital should also be investigated for fraud. It was their job and their legal responsibility to do the exact opposite of what they did. And they lied to their investors just as much as you lied to your depositors.

Can’t Bring Yourself to Type the Word “Ass”?

Eager to share our brilliant political commentary and blunt media criticism, but too genteel to link to horsesass.org? Well, good news, ladies: we also answer to HASeattle.com, because, you know, whatever. You're welcome!

HA Commenting Policy

It may be hard to believe from the vile nature of the threads, but yes, we have a commenting policy. Comments containing libel, copyright violations, spam, blatant sock puppetry, and deliberate off-topic trolling are all strictly prohibited, and may be deleted on an entirely arbitrary, sporadic, and selective basis. And repeat offenders may be banned! This is my blog. Life isn’t fair.
