Lawrence O’Donnell went crazy over a movie last night on his show on MSNBC. Thought I’d give it a watch.
OMG.. what a downer. The movie “Sovereign” features Nick Offerman as a single parent eking out a living preaching his ideology of “Sovereign Citizenship”, holding seminars in meeting places like Church facilities and taking donations. Nothing cynical about how he makes his living. He’s a true believer. And spouts this bullshit ideology non-stop, 24/hours a day. You want to punch the guy in the mouth, he’s so full of it.
Of course, he’s really into guns.
Depression point: his teenage son, home schooled of course, is shown isolated at home, alone, with his home school workbooks and a dog for company. He pines for an attractive girl a couple doors down. He is scrawny, affectless, he’s a prisoner. He brightens when his father shows up after a road trip. Something has to do that for the poor kid unfortunately, aside from his dog, it is all he has. The young actor playing this role does a fantastic job.
The house they live in is a wreck and is being foreclosed.
The movie ends badly, violently. You’ll be surprised at who gets out alive.
Dennis Quaid is in the movie, playing a police chief. The Quaid brothers, Randy and Dennis are pretty right wing but there’s no doubt they’ve made a mark in acting, Dennis in particular. He’s pretty good in the role he plays. Guys like Jon Voight and Dennis Quaid, nutty politics aside, are polished actors.
O’Donnell recommended the movie to Jen Saki during the signoff to her show. Holy crap. Is he trying to lose friends?
The movie strikes me as almost art house fare. It’s well done. Offerman gives the role everything he’s got but damn is it depressing.
