About an hour ago I received an email from YouTube informing me that at TVW’s request, they had pulled my clip of Dave Reichert talking about his intent to cut Medicare. I am in the process of filing a counter notice, and fully intend to defend my rights under the law.
But as you can see, it didn’t take me very long to upload the clip to another service. TVW is free to request LiveLeak pull this clip too, but there are plenty more video serving services where they came from—not to mention the technical ability to serve the clip myself—and I’m happy to play this game at least as long as TVW. Nothing will stop me from presenting Reichert’s own damning words to the public, short of a court order. (And perhaps, not even that.)
As I told TVW President and CEO Greg Lane yesterday, I will be happy to use TVW’s own embedded player with a time sequence parameter, once they make it available… but I’m not willing to wait. There are several fundamental issues at stake here, not the least of which being my Constitutional right to political speech, and a defense of the fair use exemption, one of the principle tools that make news reporting and commentary possible.
Had Mr. Lane contacted me before contacting YouTube, this confrontation might have been avoided. With a mutually acceptable technical compromise in the offing, it would be a shame to escalate this dispute any further… but that decision is now solely in the hands of TVW.
What exactly do they mean by “time sequence parameter?” That you could set a clip to start at a certain point or a user could easily fast forward to a certain point if instructed?
Because, the embeddable flash player they were using last fall had the second feature.
They could take forever to provide the technical fix they suggested.
If they want to play whack a mole, they’re going to be pretty busy given there are hundreds of video sharing sites out there these days.
When we win in November, we can imprison all the neocons and their supporters, confiscate their property and send their kids to reeducation camps.
The FCC will revoke the license of FOX news and that will stop anyone from being able to question us.

The player TVW is referring to is probably Flowplayer, an open-source embeddable Flash media player available from the “flowplayer.org” web site. I took a quick peek at the documentation, and the scripting options specifically include seeking to a specified time in a media file and playing it starting from that point.

Ya know what? I should’ve re-listened to that clip before posting the context comment. It IS in context.
Reichert isn’t proposing some wholesale cut in Medicaid. What he said was that they needed examine government waste (0:17 to 0:22). He then goes on to mention Medicaid and other “big programs,” where cutting a given percentage of waste / fraud would give you “more bang for your buck.”
So, Goldy, your original post is full of crap.

When Darcy (with Goldy’s help) pulled that Reichert quote totally out of context in the 2006 ad that was debunked on KING5(?) news.
To a wingnut any money NOT spent on jailing people or making war on people is “waste”.

The principle here is the use of the tape, stupid. It is not really what Reichert said, it that he said it and Goldy used it. Goldy did not edit the tape and insert words for Reichert. He used a short, CONTINUOUS piece of the speech to illustrate a point. It is fair use, it is political speech. Context is for the viewer or reader to discern, not some political hack who does not like the reference.
Just because you don’t like the result does not mean get to change the rules of free speech, political speech or fair use.

It’s no mischaracterization. Medicare/Medicaid and Social Security are run with a tiny bit of overhead that puts any private insurance company to shame. Fraud committed by doctors and others have been effectively squeezed out over the years.

I put up Reichert, in his own words. 38 seconds of contiguous video of Reichert talking frankly to fellow Republicans what his budget cutting agenda would be during a non-election year, based on the assumption that the Republicans would still be in control.
You are free to come up with your own interpretation of what Reichert really meant, but me, I’d rather folks have a convenient way to hear Reichert speak for himself. And if folks fear, that somehow I’ve taken those 38 seconds out of context, they can always link to the source video and watch the whole damn thing for themselves, just the way TVW wants them to do.

We have created such an imbalance in the economy that pulling these types of programs would be as heartless as, well, as a neocon (and that’s pretty bad)

IF you want to save easy money, DAVE, do so by cutting the individuals that are NOT actually individuals. Namely corporations.
