“The David Goldstein Show” tonight on News/Talk 710-KIRO

Tonight on “The David Goldstein Show”, 7PM to 10PM on News/Talk 710-KIRO:

7PM: Are we prepared for pandemic flu?
“Radio Kos” returns to KIRO, as Daily Kos front page editor Greg Dworkin — better known as DemFromCT — joins us by phone to talk about the latest news on avian flu, and what we need to do to prepare for the next global flu pandemic. While the flu pandemic of 1918-1919 was killing an estimated 40 million worldwide, Seattle was relatively spared when Mayor Ole Hanson shut down schools, theaters and other public places… and was run out of town in the process. Are we willing and able to do the right thing when the inevitable happens?

8PM: Are we ready for a state income tax?
In a recent editorial the Spokane Spokesman-Review wrote that “since Eyman fancies himself a defender of the powerless, he ought to advocate an income tax.” Yes, that was in the Spokesman-Review. If some of our most conservative editorialists are beginning to call for progressive tax restructuring, isn’t it time our Democratic legislators call for it too? we’ll ask that question, but first we’ll talk with Cheri Marusa, one of many former Dino Rossi donors who are now giving money to Gov. Chris Gregoire.

9PM: Do atheists need Sunday school?
I was a born atheist, but that didn’t stop my equally non-believing parents from sending me to Hebrew school to learn my religious and cultural heritage. Was that experience necessary to shaping my moral and ethical universe? Will my own daughter’s lack of a formal religious education make her less moral? Do children need something to reject?

Tune in tonight (or listen to the live stream) and give me a call: 1-877-710-KIRO (5476).

Proud To Be An Ass spews:

Ole’s is a story that reeks of politics today. After quelling the Seattle General Strike of 1919, he…set out on a nation wide speaking tour, raked in large fees, and touted his heroism against the “Bolshevik menace”. By 1920 he was a non-entity again.

    Some things never change.

Proud To Be An Ass spews:

The ability of the rich to push the tax burden down the income scale is the fuel that fires Tim Eyeman’s tax revolting parade of bogus initiatives.

It’s time to put that fire out. Tax reform. Tax reform NOW.

You have no moral universe and your “daughter” will be more of the same: impregnated then aborted at an early age before she finds her inner dyke.

I have no doubt the Catholic parents of whomever you impregnated danced jigs and thanked the Lord when your “marriage” predictably disintegrated.

The next time some conservative tries to tell me that liberals are full of “hate” and that conservatives are much more reasonable, I’ll point them to comment number 4.

Thanks for making the case that republican social conservatives have no moral conscience.

I guess turn the other cheek is meant for the other guy – your hate filled spew truly is indicative of the non-thinking bigoted “true believer”.

I think I need to shower my computer screen after your screed.

I don’t care if it is a liberal or conservative – hate filled tripe needs to be condemned. If I had seen it – I would condemn it.

Escaping religion is something I am proud of and the path to get there helped me grow, but I would not want to subject a child to the same experience.

    Thank you.

I don’t cotton to anyone, irrespective of POV, who attack the children of anyone, even HA Happy Hooligans. Debasing a child in order to get at her parents isn’t Kosher.

While civility is subject to some degree of interpretation, at no time does it encompass comment @4. Nor does any degree of comparative morality – a lowest common denominator theory of discourse, matching blow for blow, low for low – cut it either.

I have no illusions that any semblance of Marquess of Queensbury rules apply, but shots below the belt or – can’t resist this – RABBIT punches aren’t in my arsenal.

Good job tonight, Goldy. You are getting smoother on the air, especially at handling callers. It appears you are learning the game.

  16. 19

    spews:

While many here refuse to believe in God, He doesn’t refuse to believe in you. Given that the evidence is profoundly in favor of Him existing, the teaching of Psalm 14:1 (“A fool says in his heart, ‘there is no god…'”) is wisdom.

    Consider:

    Psalm 19

For the director of music. A psalm of David.

    1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
    2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.
3 There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard.
4 Their voice goes out into all the earth,
their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun…

It’s anyone’s absolute right to believe or not believe, yet the exercise of that right comes with consequences, both now and forever. Once someone is on notice, then they’re charged with what they do with the knowledge.

I would rather believe and be proved wrong after death, then not believe and, after death, be caught saying, “Oops!”

How can you care about a people when they don’t care about themselves?

What’s wrong with regressive taxes? Everything is regressive. When a poor person goes to fill up his car, he is paying more for that gas, as a percentage of his income, than a wealthy person. Is that fair? When a poor person goes to buy anything, he will always be paying more, as a percentage of his income, than a person with more money. Should we lower the prices of items if a person makes less money, to make it less “regressive?” So if you make mininum wage, a loaf of bread costs .50 cents, but if you make 50k a year, the loaf of bread will cost you $10 dollars. Should we do that with every product? According to liberals, this would be less regressive. A computer would cost a poor person $300, and a person who makes an average income $5000. That would be more fair, right?

I should point out that the “average” (mean) income in this country is pretty low, so the prices you quoted would not be reasonable, bur the principle is sound.

Just a little update, from the Thanksgiving weekend.

Had one of my co-workers over. She grew up there, moved here (legally, with her family) just after graduating from high school, about fifteen years ago. This was her first visit back after eight years, this time with a U.S. passport, after getting her citizenship. Her impressions:

    (a) Everbody has lots more money there, than here. They pay cash for their condos and cars, they don’t borrow money. They dress much better.

    (b) The schools there are still much better than in the U.S. A high school graduate there knows as much science and math as a college graduate with a B.S. in the U.S. And no, that isn’t just for the elite – that applies to 90% of the students.

    (c) She thought it would be easier traveling on a U.S. passport. But over the past few years, the decline of U.S. image abroad has made her wish she had put off her trip for at least two more years.

    (d) The reason she took U.S. citizenship is so she can vote in 2008. And yes, she plans to vote Democratic. She still can’t believe Bush was re-elected in 2004, after it became so obvious he was such a dufas.

  33. 42

    rhp6033 spews:

And on to today’s news – Why in the heck is Trent Lott resigning his Senate Seat? He was just re-elected in 2006, and has served only eleven months of a term that runs through Jan. 2012! The press release says it isn’t health-related. Some guesses:

    (a) There’s very bad news out there which will hit soon, and Trent is trying to diffuse the impact by resigning in advance;

    (b) Trent doesn’t want to be defending Bush in an impeachment battle. But considering his glowing comments about Strom Thurmond’s segregationist stance, what does that say about Bush, if Thurmond was worth defending, but Bush is “indefensible”?

    (c) Trent doesn’t want to be the minority whip while the Democrats control the Presidency and both houses of Congress in beginning in Jan. 2009. But why resign now, with over a year left before that happens?

    Goldy,

I think you oversimplify the issue of Sunday School. As you know BRS and I are devout atheists, but we sent our kids to Hebrew School. Why?

Well, for some of the same reasons you cited in re your own education. The really is NO neutral position … You and your wife will inevitably convey some messsage. But, a child raised in the general American society definitely learns certain cultural/ethical.moral principles. For Jews .. as well as many African and Asian cultures, “Sunday School” is also where ethnic history and even language are taught.

So, as a Jew, I wanted my kids to inherit the tradition .. though we also exposed them to other religions and philosophies.

I think the same is true of many parents who are proud of their heritage .. whether that is AA, Korean, Squamish. or even WASP.

The al;alternative really bothers me. The modal US culture is fine, but it is NOT what I wanted for my kids. I rathet like the idea of the US as a salad bowl, where the radish and onion contribute ad much as the tomato and lettuce.

So our kids went to hebrew school. We

No, we have a whole different brand of crackpot economics in the White House, that has now cost American business about $300 billion and still climbing fast. Buy gold.

But really, I have no “crackpot economics.” I answered a question as to whether pricing goods by actual ability to pay would be “more fair.” I think there’s no denying that it would be.

But would this be a better economic model for the US of for some other nation, would it be something that is doable, would it be desirable balanced against other considerations, what considerations would be the proper ones to balance against? I didn’t anwswer those questions. It’s just more fair.

At the end of this year new lobbying rules comes into effect that would bar a sitting Senator from lobbying for two years after they leave the Senate.

Trent don’t play dat. He wants the money now, and hang those inconvenient regulations to reduce corruption in government. If ol’ Strom had been elected, we wouldn’t have all the trouble we have today!
