In a recent editorial the Spokane Spokesman-Review wrote that “since Eyman fancies himself a defender of the powerless, he ought to advocate an income tax.” Yes, that was in the Spokesman-Review. If some of our most conservative editorialists are beginning to call for progressive tax restructuring, isn’t it time our Democratic legislators call for it too? we’ll ask that question, but first we’ll talk with Cheri Marusa, one of many former Dino Rossi donors who are now giving money to Gov. Chris Gregoire.

I was a born atheist, but that didn’t stop my equally non-believing parents from sending me to Hebrew school to learn my religious and cultural heritage. Was that experience necessary to shaping my moral and ethical universe? Will my own daughter’s lack of a formal religious education make her less moral? Do children need something to reject?

Escaping religion is something I am proud of and the path to get there helped me grow, but I would not want to subject a child to the same experience.

What’s wrong with regressive taxes? Everything is regressive. When a poor person goes to fill up his car, he is paying more for that gas, as a percentage of his income, than a wealthy person. Is that fair? When a poor person goes to buy anything, he will always be paying more, as a percentage of his income, than a person with more money. Should we lower the prices of items if a person makes less money, to make it less “regressive?” So if you make mininum wage, a loaf of bread costs .50 cents, but if you make 50k a year, the loaf of bread will cost you $10 dollars. Should we do that with every product? According to liberals, this would be less regressive. A computer would cost a poor person $300, and a person who makes an average income $5000. That would be more fair, right?

I should point out that the “average” (mean) income in this country is pretty low, so the prices you quoted would not be reasonable, bur the principle is sound.
Just a little update, from the Thanksgiving weekend.
Had one of my co-workers over. She grew up there, moved here (legally, with her family) just after graduating from high school, about fifteen years ago. This was her first visit back after eight years, this time with a U.S. passport, after getting her citizenship. Her impressions:
(a) Everbody has lots more money there, than here. They pay cash for their condos and cars, they don’t borrow money. They dress much better.
(b) The schools there are still much better than in the U.S. A high school graduate there knows as much science and math as a college graduate with a B.S. in the U.S. And no, that isn’t just for the elite – that applies to 90% of the students.
(c) She thought it would be easier traveling on a U.S. passport. But over the past few years, the decline of U.S. image abroad has made her wish she had put off her trip for at least two more years.
(d) The reason she took U.S. citizenship is so she can vote in 2008. And yes, she plans to vote Democratic. She still can’t believe Bush was re-elected in 2004, after it became so obvious he was such a dufas.
And on to today’s news – Why in the heck is Trent Lott resigning his Senate Seat? He was just re-elected in 2006, and has served only eleven months of a term that runs through Jan. 2012! The press release says it isn’t health-related. Some guesses:
(a) There’s very bad news out there which will hit soon, and Trent is trying to diffuse the impact by resigning in advance;
(b) Trent doesn’t want to be defending Bush in an impeachment battle. But considering his glowing comments about Strom Thurmond’s segregationist stance, what does that say about Bush, if Thurmond was worth defending, but Bush is “indefensible”?
(c) Trent doesn’t want to be the minority whip while the Democrats control the Presidency and both houses of Congress in beginning in Jan. 2009. But why resign now, with over a year left before that happens?

I think you oversimplify the issue of Sunday School. As you know BRS and I are devout atheists, but we sent our kids to Hebrew School. Why?
Well, for some of the same reasons you cited in re your own education. The really is NO neutral position … You and your wife will inevitably convey some messsage. But, a child raised in the general American society definitely learns certain cultural/ethical.moral principles. For Jews .. as well as many African and Asian cultures, “Sunday School” is also where ethnic history and even language are taught.
So, as a Jew, I wanted my kids to inherit the tradition .. though we also exposed them to other religions and philosophies.
I think the same is true of many parents who are proud of their heritage .. whether that is AA, Korean, Squamish. or even WASP.
The al;alternative really bothers me. The modal US culture is fine, but it is NOT what I wanted for my kids. I rathet like the idea of the US as a salad bowl, where the radish and onion contribute ad much as the tomato and lettuce.

But really, I have no “crackpot economics.” I answered a question as to whether pricing goods by actual ability to pay would be “more fair.” I think there’s no denying that it would be.
But would this be a better economic model for the US of for some other nation, would it be something that is doable, would it be desirable balanced against other considerations, what considerations would be the proper ones to balance against? I didn’t anwswer those questions. It’s just more fair.
