It’s Post-Election Gloating Special tonight on “The David Goldstein Show” on Newsradio 710-KIRO, from 7PM to 10PM.
7PM: How will the Democratic Party ever survive those crazy “nutroots”…? Democrats won big, big, BIG on Tuesday, retaking both the US House and Senate. And while some people say same of the credit should go to us bloggers and internet activists, others say us crazy, far-left, whacked-out “nutroots” are going to be the death of Democratic Party. Joan McCarter, better known as frontpage blogger McJoan on that crazy, far-left, whacked-out blog Daily Kos joins me to give her perspective on Tuesday’s election and the role of the netroots now and in the future. Oh.. and she’ll also do some gloating.
8PM: Still want to move to Canada? Tuesday was only a start, and I’m pretty damn sure we’ll take a couple of steps backwards on our way to a true progressive majority. Bill Scher of the blog Liberal Oasis is in town promoting his new book “Wait! Don’t Move to Canada!“, and he’ll be joining me in the studio to argue for his “stay-and-fight strategy to win back America.” And of course, we’ll do some gloating as well.
9PM: What’s the matter with Washington? As big an ass-whooping as the Democrats delivered nationally, that’s nothing compared to the clean-sweep in statewide and legislative races, where the Dems took near super-majorities in both houses. Progressive Majority of Washington’s Dean Nielsen will call in at the top of the hour to give us an update on the legislative races, and former Republican state Rep. Toby Nixon will join me in the studio for the entire hour to talk about what led to his party’s stunning defeat (including his own) and what he expects from the fattened Democratic majority in Olympia. Will Democrats overreach? Will they be too timid? Toby will tell us. (And since Toby is such a stand-up guy, I’ll try not to do too much gloating.
Tune in tonight (or listen to the live stream) and give me a call: 1-877-710-KIRO (5476).

It’s worth noting that the only remaining seat in question that was previously held by a Democrat is GA-12, where Democrat Barrow leads Burns by a very slim margin of about 900 votes. If Barrow holds on, then the Republicans will have failed to take a single seat in Congress or a single Governorship that was previously held by a Democrat. As I recall, such a run of the table is unprecidented.

THE GOLDWATER REVOLUTION DIED THIS WEEK
Newsweek columnist Jonathan Alter argues Tuesday’s election was the death knell for Goldwater conservatism.
By Jonathan Alter
Newsweek
Nov. 20, 2006 issue – The Category 4 political hurricane of 2006 was more than a referendum on an unpopular war and president: it signals the end of the conservative tide that began rising 40 years ago; it’s the end of a pernicious six-year experiment in “governing for the base” ….
Pat Buchanan and I rarely agree, but he rightly points out that the election marked the exhaustion of the movement that Barry Goldwater launched with his 1964 campaign. The intellectual vitality and coherence that once characterized modern conservatism have been shattered.
Karl Rove is still arguing that the hot issues of this election—Iraq, corruption, sexual hypocrisy—are only “transitory.” He’s ignoring deep fissures in his party. Neocons have been discredited and theocons dispirited. Libertarians feel betrayed by big spenders, incompetent interventionists and moralizing busybodies. In the Schiavo case, in which 70 percent of voters thought Washington should have butted out, Republicans drove a wedge through their own ranks. Same with immigration, which pits the free-trade business wing against nativist Lou Dobbsians. Most important, the stitching that was meant to hold the GOP’s big tent together contained none of the hope and optimism essential to success in American politics. Fear failed.
It failed among the young (18 to 29), who were evenly divided four years ago, but this time gave the Democrats a 20-point edge. It failed among Hispanics, who favored Democrats by 69 to 30 percent. And it even failed among white soccer moms and office-park dads, who turned the American suburbs an unrecognizable shade of blue. The 49-state GOP landslides of 1972 and 1984 are now distant memories, as onetime bellwether states like California, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and even Ohio trend heavily toward the Democrats. Texas and the Old Confederacy are no competition.
To recover, conservatives plan to return to what they call the “core principles” of small government and lower taxes. But there’s a reason they abandoned budget balancing: it’s a loser politically. There just aren’t many votes in it, and that’s why Republicans didn’t cut spending. People want the government to deliver for them. …
Their peril has its origins in Bush’s highly divisive effort to intensify the conservative movement instead of governing from the center. …
So the Conservative Era is over … Bush … must now admit that America is not Dittohead Nation. He is free of the one-party rule that kept him from being pragmatic — the … ingredient in every successful presidency. …
For Bush, there are opportunities for consensus … on Iraq … immigration, Social Security reform, energy … (and) tax cuts, which he could shift from the wealthy to the middle class. The … interest of the president in his legacy and the Democratic Congress in putting points on the board are aligned … this alignment has the potential to give Bush new political life — and his party a chance to avoid the grim fate of all extremists in American political history.

THE NEW SWING REGION: THE WEST
The GOP’s Southern Strategy isn’t dead, but it’s irrelevant:
“The land west of the Mississippi, especially west of the 100th meridian, is the new swing region — and the place where Democrats hope to win the White House. ‘It’s our 21st-century-majority strategy,’ said Simon Rosenberg of the New Democratic Network.
“The westward trend is clear. For the first time, leaders of the House and Senate are from the Far West. Democrats put Nevada in a crucial early spot in the presidential-selection process, and will hold their convention in Denver. Republican front runners have Western roots … (t)he key presidential swing states now (are) … Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Nevada.

Roger Rabbit Commentary: If Hillary is our 2008 nominee, why not put Gregoire on the ticket? It makes perfect sense. In fact, as the West continues to grow in importance (and political clout), I think Gregoire could be President someday. She’s the smartest and most dynamic politician our state has ever produced, and one of the best in the nation. She thinks big … big enough to change the world. From Day One of the 2004 campaign, I thought I might be looking at a future President. I hope she hasn’t ruled it out in her mind.

Hey Redneck — It’s The Wingnut Economy, Stoopid!!
“Nov. 20, 2006 issue – Talk about being in denial. President Bush thought that voters should credit him for a great economy, even if they opposed the war. Just look at the numbers: low unemployment, low inflation, record profits, taxes down, stocks up.
“But in exit polls, half the voters called the economy ‘not good’ or ‘poor.’ Only 31 percent said they were ‘getting ahead’ financially. Someone’s not in the loop. Is it the public or the prez?
” … (T)he answer lies in the election returns. The public declared that they’re changing the terms of the debate … too many unaddressed problems have been piling up — … retirement insecurity, oil dependence, political and corporate corruption, budget deficits, health-care costs …. Nobody seems to know what to do.
“Creeping doubt can turn into a seismic shift in political thinking, says Allen Sinai, chief global economist for Decision Economics. For example, take the perceived failures of the Carter years. They ushered in Ronald Reagan, whose antigovernment rhetoric has dominated our choices for the past 25 years. But answers don’t seem to lie in that direction anymore. ‘Another great political wave may be building up, and once it rolls out it doesn’t quickly get reversed,’ Sinai says.
“The new wave—the one the public sees but Bush does not — is a pervasive feeling of permanent insecurity, says Yale political scientist Jacob Hacker, author of the new book ‘The Great Risk Shift.’ By ‘risk shift,’ he means that employers and governments have left us more on our own, to fund our health care and retirement plan. Bush’s ownership society doesn’t look good if you’re on the street at 61 and need a Starbucks job for health insurance.
“At the top, the ‘working rich’ are doing stupendously well. In 2004, the wealthiest 1 percent of households (with incomes higher than $315,000) copped 53 percent of all the year’s income gains. Americans usually don’t care how much other people get as long as they’re doing OK themselves. But lately, they haven’t been.
“Median incomes for households with people of working age (65 or less) fell last year for the fifth year in a row. Adjusted for inflation, these families are bringing in $3,000 less, the Economic Policy Institute reports. When the president tells them they’re fine, he sounds out of touch. …
“In Washington, the political parties will be sharpening their agendas for the wide-open ’08 presidential race. The Republicans have one last chance to show they can fix things, after all. Otherwise, voters will bring in new top management. If there’s indeed a longer-term shift in public-policy thinking, here’s how the economic priorities will shake out:
“The minimum wage. It’s expected to rise from $5.15 an hour to $7.25 — not a stretch, for the country as a whole. … Princeton political scientist Larry Bartels has) shown that income growth, for the middle class and poor, rises substantially more under Dem presidents than under Republicans (the rich fare about the same, either way). …
“Social issues. Universal health insurance will be back on the table. …
“The new regime won’t be cooking anyone a free lunch. But in concept, it believes that government can help. Dems lean toward economic security, not go-it-alone. Can they do it? We’re going to see.”

Bechtel Cuts and Runs
Bechtel, which probably should itself be included in the “Axis of Evil” for its long-time corruption, influence-peddling, and bleeding dry the poor in the world without a second thought, decided several days ago to pull out of Iraq. This despite its failure to complete much of the work it was paid to do. Left behind is a country of people who feel betrayed and are losing hope that Iraq reconstruction will ever be completed. Bechtel claims it failed because much of the $2.3 billion it received to complete a number of reconstruction tasks (water-treatment systems, electricity plants, sewage systems, airports and roads) had to be spent on security instead. But in the eyes of many Iraqis, the corporation is leaving Iraq worse off than it was under the rule of Saddam Hussein – including during the last twelve years of his rein under economic sanctions.

I GREW UP AS A REPUBLICAN, SO WHY DO I FEEL JOY TODAY?
I feel joy because of the powerful message the voters have given the Republican Party. I feel that joy because the Republican Party is no longer my party and since they no longer stand for an open and free market.
I feel joy for their loss, because the conservative movement has been hijacked by corporate interests that have no interest in fair competition or an open and free market.
The drug industry, for instance, doesn’t want lower priced drugs from other countries. They want to block drugs from Canada and Europe. The auto companies don’t want foreign imports. They want trade barriers. The insurance companies don’t want universal healthcare. They want to continue to mint new CEO billionaires on the back of the American People.
So I feel joy, because in spite of all the money those organizations have heaped over Republican candidates, they lost. I feel joy because perhaps, after all, this is a new beginning.
I feel joy because Rumsfeld is gone and I never believed for a second there were any weapons of mass destruction, and I was abhorred when I witnessed a war hysteria that reminded me of a dark past in European history. I feel joy that the American people finally stood up and said enough is enough.

I think I will move back to Canada. Economy is doing well there, the realities of higher taxes and bilingualism don’t make me break out in hives, public education isn’t derailed by special interests and is competent enough to produce globally competitive workers and citizens, I can handle a moderate conservative government like Harper’s cabinet but I can’t handle “facts? who needs facts? All ya need are faith and fascism. Just spout off that you believe in the Lord but never put your Christianity into practice, misguide yourself into thinking you’re one of the top 1% who benefits, and have gay sex behind closed doors so we can perpetuate shame instead of acceptance.” It says a lot that it took Americans six years, a flooding of a major city, and some “gay scandals” to get some to wake up. Lieberman refuses to close door on switching parties
November 12, 2006
HARTFORD, Conn. –Sen. Joe Lieberman on Sunday repeated his pledge to caucus with Senate Democrats when the 110th Congress convenes in January, but refused to slam the door on possibly moving to the Republican side of the aisle.
Asked on NBC’s “Meet the Press” if he might follow the example of Sen. Jim Jeffords of Vermont, who left the Republicans in 2001 and became an independent, ending Republican control of the U.S. Senate, Lieberman refused to discount the possibility.
“I’m not ruling it out but I hope I don’t get to that point,” he said. “And I must say — and with all respect to the Republicans who supported me in Connecticut — nobody ever said, ‘We’re doing this because we want you to switch over. We want you to do what you think is right and good for our state and country,’ and I appreciate that.”
A spokeswoman for Lieberman would not elaborate when contacted by The Associated Press.

We have weakened our alliances, and would not be considered the leader of anything worldwide anymore. We have let Iran, and North Korea work on their Nuclear, or Nucular (if you are a retard) programs unchecked for 6 years. Specifically, S. 2611 would: reward approximately 10.2 million illegal aliens with an amnesty allowing them to permanently take American jobs and become U.S. citizens; entice millions more foreign workers to illegally enter our communities, crowd the housing and schools, take the jobs and depress the wages because they reasonably can believe they eventually will be given an amnesty, too; double legal immigration from 1 million to 2 million a year; give out permanent green cards to up to 66 million foreign workers and dependents over the next 20 years. The main difference in terms of numbers between the final version of S. 2611 and the version of the bill when the cloture motion was invoked was that the Bingaman Amendment to cap the number of employment-based visas for workers, spouses and children at 650,000 was adopted after cloture but before final passage. Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation estimates that the Bingaman Amendment would reduce employment-based visas available under S. 2611 by about 150,000 a year. S. 2611 passed by a vote of 62 to 36.

Klake, I would love to see the Democrats, and Republicans work out solutions to our immigration problem. So far it has only been a political football to be used by both sides, and we could use some real solutions. I would bet you and I both share a lot of the same ideas when it comes to immigration.

Hell Saddam himself could have prevented the War by letting everybody in to inspect without any restriction and he would have still be running Iraq with Jimmy McDermott. Why don’t you wake up and smell the dead rotting corpses. If Americans listened to Jim McDermott instead of a lying deserter, and his lying staff, we wouldn’t be facing this disaster in Iraq, and we could have spent the last 3 years hunting terrorists, instead of just creating them.

C’mon Klake. All the information they had stated Saddam had no wmd’s. There was not one shred of proof. If you think we invaded Iraq because we had to keep the world free of WMD’s then you definitely haven’t read the Project For A New American Century’s website.
We invaded Iraq for a number of reasons. The fact the Saddam had WMD’s was just not one of them. It was the only reason really stupid murder fantasizers could get behind 100%!
Remember when Drumheller went to the CIA headquarters and said he had proof Saddam did not have WMD’s, and they told him it was about regime change, and not intelligence.

Good show tonight Goldy, with interesting callers and viewpoints. I’ve always believed the “Reagan Democrats” and hardhat Democrats eventually would be forced back to the Democratic Party by the extreme antagonism of the cheap labor conservatives toward labor and the middle class.
The key dynamic is not so much that the percentage of the nation’s income and wealth going to the top has double in the last 30 years. It’s the fact that the working class is now going backward economically. People are worse off than they were 6 years ago, in absolute terms. Add to that the implosion of employer-based health care and retirement, and we not only have falling real wages but also tremendous economic insecurity. People know they’re being fucked, and it was inevitable that the fucking would get so bad that they could no longer give precedence to the “wedge” issues the GOP sold so successfully in the 1980s and 1990s. Inevitable because the greed of the Greedy Class is boundless and there would be no end to it, ever. I think Bush’s attempt to hand over a large part of the Social Security Trust Fund to the same Wall Street sharks who have looted the companies people work for, their pension funds, and their savings was the final straw that opened people’s eyes to what they were trading away for things like stopping gay marriage. And the American public, by an approximately 70% majority that has held constant since 1970, really does not want legalized abortion to go away. Really, they don’t.
The hardest thing for Democrats to do — but which they must do to hold onto their new majority — is to deal with its peace faction and walk the fine line between “protecting the country” and “military adventurism.” To gain the electorate’s trust, the Democrats must be the “just and necessary war” party. The American public thinks appeasement and dangerous and believes some wars have to be fought. Democrats should be the party that never goes to war unjustly or unnecessarily — but never hesitates to defend our country and, when we have to fight, we fight like hell and know how to win.
Roger Rabbit spews:
GOP = gang rape of the working and middle classes
Roger Rabbit spews:
I don’t understand all this talk about Democrats having no agenda, no plan, not standing for anything. That’s b.s. At a minimum, Democrats stand for protecting the social and economic gains they won for the working and middle classes over the last 100 years. Now those things are under attack and we’ll lose them unless people vote Democratic. There are ruthless people who not only want to build unfairness and inequality into our system, but want to be able to perpetuate it through future generations. They can be defeated only if the majority of voters reject the wingnut agenda and vote against GOP candidates.
Roger Rabbit spews:
We also face the problem of deprogramming millions of voters who swallowed the GOP lies.
Roger Rabbit spews:
I thought the Republican school board member from Issaquah who called in to Goldy’s show just doesn’t get it. He claimed the schools don’t need more money, but every problem he mentioned requires more money. For example, the fact that the state provides only half the funding for transportation, and he mentioned “unfunded mandates” in the special education area. Well, if those aren’t money issues, then what are they?
But we can’t solve these problems by asking lower income taxpayers who already bear a grossly disproporation share of the local and state tax burden to pay higher taxes. You can’t solve the school funding issues in this state without first enacting tax reform. The answer to inadequate state funding of schools is not lawsuits against the state but a state income tax. Suppose this gentleman’s district did win its special education lawsuit against the state — then what? They still won’t get money the Legislature doesn’t have. They’ll still have to comply with state and federal laws requiring public schools to serve special education population. You can’t pay for school buses out of thin air. Nothing can be done in education without more money, and you can’t ask people at the bottom end of the income spectrum — who are already paying 4 times as much of their income as the top of the spectrum — to pony up more.
Our schools need a state income tax. Why can’t that guy see this?
Roger Rabbit spews:
Hardhat Republicans complain the “entitlement mentality” is out of control in this country. But they’re the same people who want our public officials to give in to billionaire sports team owners who demand expensive stadiums, arenas, and tracks at taxpayer expense. At OUR expense! I agree the “entitlement mentality” is out of control. We give these greedy bastards what they want, and 10 years later it isn’t good enough and they want us to tear it down and give them an even more expensive new one! City taxpayers forked out $75 million to completely rebuild Key Arena and 10 years later the Sonics want another $200 million from us! Fuck these welfare bums! They can go back to Oklahoma and take their teams with them. Seattle voters told them exactly what they thought of their shameless panhandling last Tuesday. No more welfare for billionaires!

I AM HAVING RETURNED!
Monday 13th November 2006
Greeting to Mr. and Mrs. Pigeater and all you baco bits at sea! Have you been not hitting me? I have been having the close calls with you too! The Jews who run the internet tubes have performed the profane ritual of the destroying of my magic internet tube making box so I have not been able to make the postings to my bliss-making blog. With the hoping that this posting will sneak through their Walls Of Blocking Flame, I have forwarded to them the ema’il from Nigeria so that they will be distracted by the moneysmell! I must be writing of the quickness so I will just tell you that I am having the best time of the life thanks to the great people of America, even if you are all swineherding Jew lovers! You have done what this poor mother of an innocent son killed in an illegal war could only make the sleep pictures of – you have defeated the terrorist Bush, Allah (and Foley and the Jew Abramoff) be praised! I have been staying at my new best friend Nancy Pelosivic’s house and the cards and flowers she has received from her Prayers Of The Watering Hole have made me feel very much of the joy I tell you! I am thinking of particulars the card from al-Ec’B’al-Dwin and the flowers from al-Zawahiri were very much the nice. I am hoping to introduce the two of them one day – I am thinking they will become no eating friends!
I must go before the Jews realize the ema’il from the Land Of The Dark Ones is a bigger hoax than your blasphemous lie about landing on the moon! Ah, but based on how you are rock and rolling the vote, soon you will all be learning truth in your madrassas! The doorbell is the sound of my sushi arriving. I asked for extra wahabi – may the Jewpanese delivery merchant burn for eternity in a sea of flaming kamikaze shots if he does the messing up of my order again!
Murthahu Akbar!
SP – I am not knowing when I will be able to perform the bliss-making blog posting again as the intertube-running Jews are very arty! But I am of the hopeful that it will be soon, Inshallah!
SSP – Have you seen the Jew Gutfeld on the Jackal News Channel? Even for a pigeater, he is looking like he has been loving the bacon too much, does he not?
SSSP – I saw the Borat documentation and while his Jew views are to be given the award, I had much of the trouble understanding him as he is not speaking the very well England. Also he is a smelly Kazakh. In my country we had a riddle: If you are on a plane with two Kazakhs and you have only the one bullet, who should you do the shooting of? Of course it is a magic question – the answer is that once you set off the bomb attached to your chest and blow the plane into the sea it doesn’t matter, for then you will be in Paradise where there are no Jews and no smelly Kazakhs!
Afifah!

As part of the community service that judges will impose on every Republican voter in the country, I propose the following guest editorial in today’s P-I be framed and permanently affixed to the wall, and be required daily reading:
“I recently filled out a political survey online. It asked me to rate myself from (0) very liberal to (100) very conservative. … Why … does this … question stump me?
“The trick is that even though I’m socially liberal, I’m fiscally conservative. I’ve run my small business for 18 years. I’m averse to personal debt, and the $8.5 trillion federal debt horrifies me. Now before someone blames the ‘tax and spend liberals’ for creating it, let’s consider that the debt doubled (as a percentage of GDP) during Presidents Reagan/George H.W. Bush, dropped 10 percent under President Clinton and has grown 15 percent so far under President George W. Bush. So with that as a backdrop, let’s look at my ‘liberal’ positions.
“1. Universal health care. We spend nearly double what other industrialized nations spend per-person on health care, and yet our system ranks lower in most measurements including quality of care and access to care. The U.S. also ranks near the bottom for life expectancy and last in infant mortality. It’s clear our health care dollar can be better spent. The answer? A universal government-run system complemented by private services. Better, cheaper, proven.
“2. Environmental protection. Our entire civilization is dependent upon the natural capital of our planet. With every tree cut down and every pollutant entering the air, water and soil, we mortgage our fiscal and physical health. We will spend infinitely more money dealing with degraded natural systems than corporations and countries are saving and earning now. An aggressively green economy will pay off not only by avoiding fiscal disaster but will stimulate economic prosperity in itself.
“3. Social services. As our safety net is clipped, our population finds itself less secure. A lost job or a health problem can plunge middle-class Americans into bankruptcy. An insecure population does not make for an energized work force. People who are a few paychecks from the street are less likely to take risks or start up new businesses. Meanwhile, the money we save by reducing services simply gets channeled into resulting costs such as police, jails, substance abuse programs, special education and Medicaid. The costs of providing basic social services are investments amply repaid by a healthier, more productive and less needy population.
“4. Alternative energy. In 1977, President Carter committed the U.S. to halting our growing dependence on foreign oil and began investing in his goal to derive 20 percent of our energy from solar power by the year 2000. Enter Reagan. So here we are today straddled with more shortsighted policies from another oil-saturated administration.
“So all of us pay. The planet pays with air and water quality, oil spills and rising temperatures. Our military pays through expanding engagement in an unstable Middle East. And we pay with rising energy dollars and declining health in an increasingly dirty and dangerous world. …
“I assure you, my other wacky liberal positions are equally steeped in common sense and fiscal prudence. I guess I’ll give myself a (0) for very liberal, as I just don’t understand what ‘conservative’ means anymore.

Seventy-one percent cited disapproval of George Bush’s job performance; 67% cited Republican spending habits; 63% said it was disapproval of the Republican congressional performance generally. Only 27% of those asked cited the quality of Democrat candidates as a reason Democrats won the election.

That said, voters are worried about what the Democrats might do with their majority status. Fifty-one percent of those polled by Newsweek said they were “very concerned” that the new Congress will push too hastily for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq, while 43% said they were “very concerned” that the Democrat majority would hamper the administration’s efforts to combat terrorism.
