The Seattle Chapter of Drinking liberally turns 10 years old this Tuesday. Please join us in our celebration. There are rumors that founding hosts Nick and Lee will make an appearance. I’ll be handing out copies of “Drinking Liberally: 10 Years In Poetry.” There will be food. There will be drinks. There will be conversation. Will you be there?
We meet every Tuesday evening—birthday or not—at the Roanoke Park Place Tavern, 2409 10th Ave E, Seattle. Our starting time is 8:00 pm, but some folks stop by earlier for dinner.
Can’t make it to Seattle tonight? Check out one of the other DL meetings this week. Tonight the Tri-Cities chapter also meets. On Wednesday, the Bellingham and Burien chapters meet. The Woodinville, Kent, and Spokane chapters meet on Thursday. And next Monday, the Yakima and South Bellevue chapters meet.
There are 189 chapters of Living Liberally, including seventeen in Washington state, four in Oregon and two in Idaho. Chances are excellent there’s a chapter meeting somewhere near you.

Twelve years of work destroyed in probably under ten minutes probably by some Christian fucktard who looks at anyone with less than lily-white skin as being subhuman. In the former United States, now a national-corporatist vassal state of the banks, such is increasingly common. The gloves are off with the racist element, and the paradigm is becoming more popular as people see little if any reaction to their acts of terrorism. It starts with petty vandalism, and rationalizations of circumstance in Police incidents of violence. Willfully turning one’s face from the little things and failing to notice the greater pattern.
The TeaParty wants to become the next Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei, but with Velveeta cheese and hotdogs.

If the law of supply & demand says “when wages go up, jobs go down,” why isn’t Walmart laying off workers?

I dunno, maybe it’s because Wal-Mart chose to slash benefits instead.
Amid Soaring Profits, Walmart to Cut Off 30,000 Workers From Health Insurance
Walmart will stop providing insurance to workers scheduled fewer than 30 hours a week, Welborn explains. As the Wall Street Journal points out, this is not the company’s first cut of this kind. In 2011, Walmart slashed coverage for new employees scheduled fewer than 24 hours a week, and in 2012 it instated the same cuts to new workers scheduled under 30 hours a week.
…
In addition to the elimination of health insurance for part-time workers, beginning January first, Walmart will substantially increase costs for workers who do have company health insurance. For example, Welborn explains, Walmart’s “most popular and lowest cost associate-only plan” will increase by 20 percent per pay period.

Frees up money to pay higher wages. Now they’re at the minimum Obama wanted in 2013, they’re at or above any federal increase that might possibly occur before 2017, a lot of the heat is off, and they get to claim they did it voluntarily.
Oh. And they DID cut jobs. A lot of them, not very recently ago.
No one said the law of supply and demand is immediate. Nor that related events always occur in expected order.

Whether or not O’Reilly was ever in any type of danger isn’t the exactly the fucking issue.

“I was in a situation one time, in a war zone in Argentina, in the Falklands…”
Those folks from NBC and CBS who are piling on O’Reilly, those about whom O’Reilly lied and said were “hiding”, actually have the experience to know the difference between a “war zone” and an “expense account zone”, as in staying in a fine cosmopolitan hotel and ordering room service.

Sloppy Travis Bickle,
“I dunno, maybe it’s because Wal-Mart chose to slash benefits instead.”
Nope…that’s not it. Unless you are an imbecile who cannot do simple estimates of effects and magnitudes. Let’s analyze your bullshit.
Do you have any idea of how many U.S. employees Walmart has? (Hint 1.4 Million a couple years ago.) The 30,000 employees that work <30 hours a week make up a tiny, tiny fraction of their workforce. Let's see...that would be around 2%.
But Walmart suggests that their new wage policy will affect 500,000 people. I haven't seen anyone doing the math (which is complicated by different state minimum wages), but I don't think the insurance cuts to 30,000 part time employees is going to come close to paying for the $1,000 to $4,000 per year raises that 500,000 people will be getting by next year. Do you?
And that "substantial" increase of 20% per pay period for health insurance (which is really 19%)? That is, literally, an increase from $18.40 to $21.90 per 2-week pay period. Or about $7/month. And that increase doesn't necessarily save Walmart any money, since their insurance costs may have gone up, as well.
Once again, you've found a factoid, and failed to critically analyze its relevance to the discussion, and ended up implying something that is unsupported.
You suck as a thinker.
Perhaps it is time to find something more useful to do with your head...like volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. You could drive nails with it!

@ 15
I suck at a lot of things.
6,000 Wal-Mart employees currently at $7.25 federal minimum wage. Like you, I didn’t see enough info out there to figure out how much it would cost Wal-Mart, so didn’t try. I also don’t know how much Wal-Mart will save in federal taxes, other taxes, and other deductibles that will be affected by this increase in their labor costs.
It’s been all of one week, and Wal-Mart hasn’t announced any job cuts since they announced an increase in their minimum hourly wage that hasn’t taken effect yet. Somehow that proves, or disproves……. what, exactly?
That’s about as well-reasoned as suggesting that a hotel sale in Seattle
http://horsesass.org/15-minimu.....ord-price/
shortly after passage of a minimum wage increase that hasn’t taken effect yet somehow is evidence that the wage hike was a smart move.
Come to think of it, the same guy might very well have written both.
Happy Anniversary, Darryl.

Not at all.
The fact that you cherry picked a small aside “near the bottom” rather than the central point and majority of content in my comment that was “near the top” of the pyramid is symptomatic of your inability to engage in honest dialog.
The entire point of the disagreement hierarchy is that an argument can be evaluated, at first pass, by how high it ascends. An argument that honestly and accurately refutes the central point of the other participant is NOT made invalid because other DH levels that may be invoked.
I would point out that your comment @ 17 is a totally dismiss-able level “DH2 Response to Tone”. Feel free to do a bit more climbing…if you can actually refute the central point of my comment @15, have at it.

I was listening to WBBM out of Chicago on the tune-in app tonight. Mayor Rahm Emanuel only got 45% of the vote, making Chicago History. For the first time since the creation of the non-partisan primary, the mayor’s race is headed to a run-off. The race, in April, will be between Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia.
