Sportstalk with Philly Goldy

by Goldy — Tuesday, 1/2/07, 1:02 pm

I don’t follow college football all that much but I gotta say, man… what a finish to the Salty Corn Chip Bowl last night between Boise State and Oklahoma. A hook-and-lateral to tie it up with 7 seconds left, and then a Statue of Liberty play on a two-point conversion to win it in overtime.

And then the star tailback proposes to the head cheerleader live on national television. (I’d love to follow up on that story 20 years from now.)

I’m not sure what possessed me to tune in, but I sure am glad I did.

I think it’s commonly called a hook and ladder play. There was also the famed statue of liberty play from grade school touch football. Although, it strictly wasn’t quite a statue of liberty play.

    Anonymous @1,

Whatever you call it, it was a great game. The kind of game that actually makes you laugh.

I know this has nothing to do with politics, but well, there’s more to life than just politics.

To make the bowl season’s excessive football watching more enjoyable, I figured at the outset that I had to come up with some formula to choose which team to root for in any given game. Of course, the blue state/red state formula came quickly to mind, with a north/south formula breaking ties. With regard to the Boise State/Oklahoma game, which was one of the best I’ve ever seen, we had the difficult matchup of schools from two very red states. There, we went with a west v. east, underdog v. favorite formula, and the result was most satisfying. I guess the upshot of all this is that, sadly, for some of us, even sports can be politicized.

Why didn’t they go for 2 in regulation? The weaker team is always supposed to go for the win when they can….Statue of Liberty play would have worked just fine then too and save the whole overtime bit.

And I thought about TiVo-ing that game, but decided, “Naw, the Sooners will roll all over Boise State.”

Now I’m sorry I didn’t. I love seeing Oklahoma lose, and losing to a perennial powerhouse like Boise State just makes it all that much better. They should get the national championship just for that.

I Haven’t got TIVO. . .but only have to close my eyes and I can replay both those plays anytime! Ian Johnson had it right when he said they were tired of people doubting them and Oklahoma treating them like their little brother all week. . . .

Well, it is now the second day after the greatest finish I have ever seen to a football game. I am still watching the last 2 minutes of regulation and the overtime on the DVR.

    What a game!

Here is to Notre Dame getting the living shit stomped out of them by LSU tonight! I hate the Irish, I hate their fat, goofy coach, I hate the golden dome helmets and I hate touchdown Jesus.

While the BSU/OK game was stellar, and an exemplar of the best of college football, the officiating last night in the Wake Forest/ Louisville game was a disaster. It is beyond my how a crew of ACC officials could so consistently void clear video evidence and help Louisville succeed. One can only hope that none of those officials matriculate to the big leagues. I too can’t stand Notre Dame (how could NBC broadcast their entire season year after year–oooh that’s right, the Roman Catholic market share, but Left Foot, you must at least like the leperchaun, right???
