The stock market is off 252 Dow points 5 minutes before the close, and the DJIA is now well under 11,900.
This selloff doesn’t have much to do with the debt deal. To the extent it does, I think the market is disappointed with the deal, in that it doesn’t really cut any spending — it merely promises that future Congresses (which haven’t been elected yet) will cut spending … and investors don’t believe that promise will be kept.
I think, though, the market’s downward slide of the last several trading sessions reflects investors digesting the latest economic data showing the economy is either already in a double-dip recession or is dropping into one. So, this market selloff really is all about the stalling economic recovery.
I further increased my cash position this morning by selling all of my Exxon. It’s not a bad stock — for a greedhead like me — but cash is worth more than Exxon shares right now. Some stocks are already ridiculously cheap, but all signs point to many more good socks becoming even cheaper in the days ahead. I have no idea how deep this correction will go, but I’m hoping for 20% to 25%, so I can take some real money from rich Republicans — why should Republicans have a monopoly on being rich? I want to be rich, too! (With their money; I don’t like taking money from salt-of-the-earth working stiffs, I only enjoy stealing from Republican thieves.)
Looks like we closed down 264.36 Dow points (11,868.13), down 75.37 NASDAQ points (2669.24), down 32.82 SP500 (1,254.12)points today.
