And yes, that’s the Republican leadership once again blocking the bill… the same Republican senators who just held a high-priced fundraiser for Dino Rossi.
Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans returning home in the midst of the worst job market since the Great Depression are finding it particularly difficult to get themselves back on their feet, so you’d think if Republicans really supported the troops as much as they like to claim they do, they’d support Sen. Murray’s bill instead of stubbornly blocking it.
And you’d think if Rossi really supported the troops, he’d stand with Sen. Murray on this bill, instead of with his GOP benefactors.
Don’t be fooled. They hate America, too. More than al qaeda does. Worse, they are actually in a position to do actual harm and pose an actual extant threat to America. But now that Senator Murray, who voted AGAINST the Iraq war authorization, and would have saved the country TRILLIONS of dollars if her colleagues would have followed her lead, proposed a bill to take care of the most destitute of Iraq war veterans: homeless women vets with children living on the street, Coburn and Mitchell are preserving fiscal responsibility.
So chickenhawk Mitch McConnell, on chickenhawk Tom Coburns behalf – the guys who weaseled out of military service, voted for the Iraq war, and have never been concerned with how it will be paid for – blocks the bill, on grounds of fiscal responsibility, because it is not paid for “up front”.

And for my own opinion, we (the US government) can now borrow money at historically rock-bottom prices, in order to provide stimulus during the worst recession of the last 70 years, to create or preserve the jobs that provide revenue to offset deficits, and therefore we should do vigorously until the economy and jobs picture improves.
This also against the backdrop of the latest CBO report stating that if the Congress sticks with current law the fiscal situation is more-or-less okay for the next 20-25 years.
The Republicans hate America because it won’t follow their theocon/neocon ways.
With rock bottom interest rates, now would be the time to invest in rebuilding in our infrastructure (bridges, transit, water, energy, etc…) which would put many, if not most, of the unemployed back to work in good paying jobs.
