Republicans: “We don’t hate America, we just hate the troops”

Yup, that’s Sen. Patty Murray asking for unanimous consent on a bill providing aid to homeless female veterans and all homeless veterans with dependent children. And yes, that’s the Republican leadership once again blocking the bill… the same Republican senators who just held a high-priced fundraiser for Dino Rossi.

Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans returning home in the midst of the worst job market since the Great Depression are finding it particularly difficult to get themselves back on their feet, so you’d think if Republicans really supported the troops as much as they like to claim they do, they’d support Sen. Murray’s bill instead of stubbornly blocking it.

And you’d think if Rossi really supported the troops, he’d stand with Sen. Murray on this bill, instead of with his GOP benefactors.

Don’t be fooled. They hate America, too. More than al qaeda does. Worse, they are actually in a position to do actual harm and pose an actual extant threat to America. Al qaeda can murder people, but they pose no threat to the country itself. Only the Republican party has the ability to actually dstroy the nation. Thay are the real terrorists. I say we exercise the Bush Doctrine and preemptively wipe them all out before they succeed.

From Daily Kos: “Let me see if I have this straight: in the last few days members of the GOP have savagely screwed the unemployed, protected the bankstas, trashed Thurgood Marshall, implied rape and incest is part of God’s plan, defended BP, threatened to either end social security or screw over 20 million plus people who have paid into the system for at least 20 years by making them wait until age 70 to see their benefits, and screwed homeless veterans with children. That about it, or is there more?”

  3. 3

    Sarge spews:

In 1966, Senator, ordained Southern Baptist Deacon, and chickenhawk Tom Coburn (R-OK), turned 18.

In 1967, after being trained by the military, chickenhawk Senator Mitch McConnell was granted early release from the military, thereby avoiding being shipped off to Vietnam. Wikipedia offers two explanations for his early discharge. It was either A) A senator wrote a letter asking for it, or B) he had “ocular neuritis”, a symptom of multiple sclerosis, or C) Both.

In any case, both McConnel and Coburn managed to avoid serving in Vietnam.

Both McConnell and Coburn voted for the authorization of the Iraq war.

Neither McConnell nor Coburn have ever proposed that any of the costs of the war be paid for “up front” or at any point in time.

The cost of the Iraq war, plus the legacy costs of taking care of physically and/or mentally wounded veterans is in the trillions of dollars.

McConnell and Coburn voted for this, and have never been the tiniest bit concerned about paying for it.

But now that Senator Murray, who voted AGAINST the Iraq war authorization, and would have saved the country TRILLIONS of dollars if her colleagues would have followed her lead, proposed a bill to take care of the most destitute of Iraq war veterans: homeless women vets with children living on the street, Coburn and Mitchell are preserving fiscal responsibility.

So chickenhawk Mitch McConnell, on chickenhawk Tom Coburns behalf – the guys who weaseled out of military service, voted for the Iraq war, and have never been concerned with how it will be paid for – blocks the bill, on grounds of fiscal responsibility, because it is not paid for “up front”.

    Dis. Grace. Full.

    @2 “is there more?”

Well, they both defended BP and apologized to them. They’ve also demonized the unemployed as being lazy leaches on society as well as having screwed them. And they say that they want to “take out” the opposition leader with a little second amendment action. Yeah, the wingnuts are on a real fucking roll of late.

  5. 6

    Michael spews:

    @2, 4

Not only did they defend BP and apologize for them, they spent the entirety of the Bush Admin. destroying the regulatory bodies and functions that keep things like the BP spill from happening.

And, yeah, there’s lots more, but I try not to think about it as there’s not much I can do about it and it would just make me mad.

Get you self an education. Come back. We’ll talk.

It’s just like Ebenezer Scrooge and his assessment of charitable giving.

And 7. Blackflon , maybe it is just politics as usual (to you), but it’s also “politics as usual” to get as much mileage as possible out of the really horrible optics of what you think is such a legislatively reasonable position as denying assistance to homeless veterans and their children.

And for my own opinion, we (the US government) can now borrow money at historically rock-bottom prices, in order to provide stimulus during the worst recession of the last 70 years, to create or preserve the jobs that provide revenue to offset deficits, and therefore we should do vigorously until the economy and jobs picture improves.

This also against the backdrop of the latest CBO report stating that if the Congress sticks with current law the fiscal situation is more-or-less okay for the next 20-25 years.

    uptown spews:

With rock bottom interest rates, now would be the time to invest in rebuilding in our infrastructure (bridges, transit, water, energy, etc…) which would put many, if not most, of the unemployed back to work in good paying jobs.

    Scrooge (original title)
First Collector: At this festive time of year, Mr. Scrooge, it is more than usually desirable that we should make some slight provision for the poor and destitute.
    Ebenezer: Are there no prisons?
    First Collector: Plenty of prisons.
Ebenezer: And the union workhouses – are they still in operation?
First Collector: They are. I wish I could say they were not.
Ebenezer: Oh, from what you said at first I was afraid that something had happened to stop them in their useful course. I’m very glad to hear it.
First Collector: I don’t think you quite understand us, sir. A few of us are endeavoring to buy the poor some meat and drink, and means of warmth.
    Ebenezer: Why?
First Collector: Because it is at Christmastime that want is most keenly felt, and abundance rejoices. Now what can I put you down for?
    Ebenezer: Huh! Nothing!
Second Collector: You wish to be anonymous?
Ebenezer: [firmly, but calmly] I wish to be left alone. Since you ask me what I wish sir, that is my answer. I help to support the establishments I have named; those who are badly off must go there.
First Collector: Many can’t go there.
Second Collector: And some would rather die.
Ebenezer: If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population. … It’s enough for a man to understand his own business, and not to interfere with other people’s. Mine occupies me constantly. Good afternoon, gentlemen!

    # 2: Within the last few days, the Idaho Republican Party adopted a platform calling for a repeal of the 17th Amendment (which authorized direct election of U.S. Senators), a return to a combined gold and silver economic standard, and asserted that the State of Idaho had the right to nulify within it’s boarders and U.S. laws with which it didn’t agree (as S. Carolina attempted to do in 1835, and actually did as part of secession from the Union in 1860).

Yep, the Idaho Republicans have decided that for them, the future of the Republican Party is somewhere in the mid-19th century.

Which political party? Well, since it congress who actually pass the budgets(and who vote on increasing the debt limit), perhaps you can tell me who has been in charge the majority of the time over the last 30 years.

But hey, since you sound like head-in-the-sand partisan, lets pretend one party(the one you dont like), is responsible for 55% of the debt, and the party you like is good for the 45%. My response is: so what? Do we give the 45% party a pass? NOPE.

Keep that head buried in the sand there big guy, it seems to be working so damn well for us.

its amazing what a 10 foot high fence with razor wire and guards will accomplish…gee, I wonder why we don’t do that…hmmmm…..

Along a 1900-2000 mile border? Uh right… 10 ft high fence? How about a 15 foot high ladder?. Oh excuse me. I forgot about your crowd and their pop guns.

And what about the border to the north? Oh that’s the “fair skinned” border.. No need to worry about that.

  27. 36

the estimated 20 million illegal aliens

Like with most numbers from unhinged right wing idiots, they expand and expand.

    Here’s a number:

And it’s from a right wing source!

    and here’s another:;menu_id=8

More to the liking of the chickenshit crowd. As for our resident fearful fiend, he’ll take the high number I’m sure.

and Not a single mention of employer sanctions? Huh. Thought so..

  28. 37

    Which political party?

The ignorance, the reality denial is sooooooo… tired.

What did right wingers do after Goldwater was trounced in ’64? Kept on going and elected their champion Reagan 16 years later.

What does the chickenshit want? Mooooaaan… Oh I forget – Dale Petersen – a gun-totin, steed riding, illegal hatin’ REPUBLICAN! And a loser. Not even the Alabama right winger bought his horseshit.

And why are there only two viable political parties in this country? Always has been and probably always will be? Maybe not the best state of things but heh, that’s reality – deal with it. Like the right wingers did after ’64.

Back to original question. For me it’s the party that historically has given the ordinary American a fairer shot despite falling short from time to time. And that’s the party of FDR.

Of course, the problem is that an unpatroled fenceline is little more than a speedbump. How do the wingnuts propose to hire the personnel necessary to patrol a 1,900+ mile border 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year? Raise taxes?????

Oh, and for the comment @ # 37 asking “how many illegals are pouring over the Canadian border?”

Fine, then make it a 15 high razor wire fence with mines on both sides. happy now?

and I wouldnt mind paying more taxes for a secure border. I would rather pay higher taxes to secure the border than higher taxes and health insurance rates to support illegals when they are here.
