From The Hill:
The GOP committee has pledged $2 million in coordinated spending to Republican candidate Carly Fiorina in California and reserved $3 million in television airtime in Washington for the month of October.
But a Republican political strategist with Senate ties is skeptical of knocking off Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) or Patty Murray (D-Wash.) or winning Connecticut, given the dominance Democrats have shown in those states in recent years.
There’s a difference between reserving television airtime, and actually spending the money. It will be interesting to see how much of that $3 million the NRSC actually spends in Washington, or whether they ultimately spend more, for $3 million isn’t really all that much considering Murray’s fundraising advantage.

American Myth: Work Hard And You’ll Succeed
Every American worker knows this is bullshit, nothing but Capitalist Class propaganda, designed to brainwash ordinary folks into being complaisant worker bees. You don’t do well in this country by working your ass off. You do well by having rich parents; or, if you don’t have rich parents, by bleaching your hair blonde and having breast implants and spreading your legs until you can rope in some guy who has rich parents; or, if you’re not a girl, by working in an industry that allows you to skim money from the system. But getting ahead by working? You’re fucking kidding! The only thing work gets you is next Friday’s paycheck. And, increasingly, for most workers, the paycheck is the only thing they get as health and pension benefits disappear from the American workplace. And that paycheck, economic statistics tell us, has been steadily shrinking since 1970 as the Owning Class takes more and more of GDP and leaves only crumbs for the working class. Work for success? Bullshit! As tens of millions of American workers have discovered during the last several decades of Republican dominance of our political and economic lives, what hard work ultimately gets you is unemployment, downsizing, offshoring, and a very rich boss. Oh well, maybe you can vicariously enjoy his money.
Roger Rabbit spews:
As for me, I don’t work! Why should I? You don’t get ahead in our system by working for advancement. No, I get ahead by sitting on my fat rabbit ass in front of a computer screen reading stock quotes! It’s only 10:30 AM and I’ve already made $650 in the stock market today! Sure beats working.
Politically Incorrect spews:
Actually, I’d say the best advice for a young person starting out in his or her working career is to get a government job. The private sector can’t compete with the benefits a pay of government entities. Plus you don’t have to work very hard, and it’s tough for a government agency to fire anybody.

I don’t agree with this at all. I think that hard work pays off immensely. Of course, there are those who are born with a silver spoon in their mouth (ahem, George Bush Jr.) who can skate through life. But this isn’t the case for most people.
I think that the real issue is that hard work has a marginal benefit depending on your age. It pays off the most the younger you are. Someone who works hard in high school to get into a good college, works hard in college to graduate summa cum laude with a marketable degree (along with learning the necessary communication skills to leverage this degree properly in the future), and then proceeds to do well at their first job or in grad school will be very well set up in the future. Someone who goofs off through high school and college, and then decides to get on the ball and start working hard in their late 20s is going to have a rough time catching up. Not everything in life is fair.
Of course, the college, etc. isn’t necessary (I was just using this as an example). If someone drops out of college to work hard on a software startup, they may just end up better off than the college grad. But I would say that in both cases, the hard work pays off, and the younger you are when you decide to start taking that path, the better.

@5,
“Not everything in life is fair.”
That’s correct. People confuse “favorable” with “fair.”

If this country does not turn around the GOP economic policies initiated over the last 30 years, the “necessary communication skills” you refer to may well be chinese. I just hope it’s not too late.
There is a lot of advice someone could give to a young person just starting out. I would say be educated, work hard and try to be able to retire early. Whatever you do, don’t wait until your 65 and have to rely on Social Security. Because if the republicans have their way, by then, there won’t be anything social and there sure as hell won’t be any security.

Me thinks the GOP protests too much with regard to their control of the US government. They have all the rules in the Senate to back them up without a majority. They can stop any and all legislation, appointees, the judicial system, just by continuing to say No to any proposals. It would not be in their best interest to control the Senate until the 2012 election. And the House is now completely irrelevant.

Republicans skeptical of knocking off Murray
You’re being just a little sloppy with the facts again, Goldy: that’s a – meaning, one – Republican who is skeptical (and an unnamed one at that):
“But a Republican political strategist with Senate ties is skeptical of knocking off Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) or Patty Murray (D-Wash.) or winning Connecticut, given the dominance Democrats have shown in those states in recent years.”
And the same article notes that Charlie Cook considers the race a toss-up.
And if the race is tightening up, as the most recent polls indicate, it would seem that they’d have plenty of incentive to spend that money.

But the GOP was so sure they had Sen. Murray’s number in 1998 and again in 2004. For that matter they were convinced they’d be able to knock off Sen. Cantwell in 2006.
