Yesterday, (u)SP’s Matt Rosenberg felt compelled to make the following comment about the tragic shootings on Capitol Hill:
Yes, the victims were of a group that often sported dyed hair, danced to electronica, and certainly in most instances were liberals, if they voted at all. Who cares?
The political persuasion of the victims hadn’t occurred to me at all, and it immediately struck me as odd that Matt felt the need to highlight — in his second paragraph — his assumption that the dyed-hair, electronica-dancing, bullet-ridden ravers were liberals. I’d intended to write on this myself, but wasn’t sure what to say.
Well, The Stranger’s Dan Savage knew exactly what to say, and he’s said it over on Slog:

Forgive me for reading between the lines, but I was raised by a Freudian psychoanalyst, so I have a tendency to look for meaning in one’s conscious and unconscious actions.
The point is that Matt thought it necessary to even mention that the victims might be liberals. WTF? It’s a total non sequitur. It’s like postulating on their height, or what color shoes they might be wearing.
So why did Matt make this observation? Because he not only assumed they were liberals, he assumed most of readers would assume they were liberals, and thus have less compassion for them. (A reaction, by the way, he clearly thinks would be wrong.)
I’m assuming Matt knows his audience — and as Will @7 points out, he’s a very good writer — so I think it is fair to look for meaning in his choice of words. Clearly Matt believes a substantial segment of the (u)SP readership would have less compassion for brutally murdered liberals than for brutally murdered conservatives. And that’s sad.

As a parent my job is to keep my kids safe. My kids’ job is to explore the world so they can make their way in it when they’re grown. In the course of raising them, they may chafe at some of my restrictions. That is ok. At the same time, I’ll allow them some leeway to make some hopefully minor mistakes. If they can handle the responsibility, fine. If not then they’re not ready. Give and take.
If I’m too strict, they may go nuts at 18 when I can’t do anything about it short of locking them in a cage. Then all my energies would be wasted.

I don’t have the time right now to read everything on this thread, but I had to jump in to defend momus on this case. When it comes to the 14 and 15 year olds, the problem is bad parenting.
No, you don’t lock them up in the basement but (and dj, I’m sort of surprised at you) you don’t give your 14 year old a 3am curfew, and are not worried when she doesn’t come home. I have no problems with freshmen in high school going to an all ages dance. I would have no problems with my daughter doing that, but she damn well better be home by midnight, and she doesn’t go anywhere other than the dance.
Momus is wrong when he tries to blame drugs or ravers for this tradegy, but he is spot on when he points out that bad parenting put two very young girls in a situation they should never have been in.
