Nothing “hillbilly” about it. Most of the so-called hillbillies I know at least have the capacity to engage in conversation. It has been reported that he watches about six hours of television every day.
Now, my Grandmother had her shows when I was a kid. She liked “Wagon Train” and “Gunsmoke”, when “Mary Hartmann, Mary Hartmann” came on she was kinda religious about that. Same with “All in the Family”. She was a great fan of Warner Bros. cartoons that came on Saturday morning.
But the things that were important to her were all related to real information. Reality was important to her. Walter Cronkite, that morning news show with Barbara Walters and some of the second-tier newscasters, and always the big west coast newspapers like the San Francisco Chronicle and the Los Angeles Times were there on the table every morning.
But you know what? She had a pretty damn good sense of what Propaganda looked like and wasn’t afraid of being vocal about it when she saw it. To her, most everything on television was propaganda of some sort. She died in 1977 before 24 hour Cable News was even a thing.
Now we have a President that seems to believe everything he sees on the television shows he likes, and reflexively disbelieves everything he doesn’t like. It isn’t the information being presented, it’s all about the person doing the reporting and he certainly has his favorites.
He’s probably one of the shallowest and least intelligent men this country has ever seen in that office.

Over many years, I’ve noticed that a major stock can have a rapid decline as investors run for the exit, but a relatively short time later the stock recovers and even goes higher. Take Union Carbide for instance. Back in the mid-80’s, there was an accident at one of their plants in India. The stock dropped to around $8 per share. A few months later, it was over $13 per share. That’s over 60% appreciation in just a short time.
Then there was Motorola. They fell out of bed over some businss about cell phones causing brain cancer. That one turned into another big money maker for those with the wisdom to buy and wait a bit.
When people are freaking out, that’s the time to buy. When they’re feeling smug and confident, that’s the time to sell.

It’s not enough for a stock to be unloved; it must be unloved for invalid reasons. In the current market environment, trying to catch falling knives generally isn’t a good idea.
What changed is the market is now 90% professionally traded, and those folks don’t make those kinds of mistakes. It’s like trying to play chess against a computer.
I still pay some attention to whether a stock may be mispriced, but the mispricing — if it exists — usually is minor; and this isn’t a portfolio strategy. It’s at best makeshift.
I think the best approach today is to play the compounding game. Don’t overpay, and reinvest dividends and gains to maximize your returns. The mathematical certainty of compounding is the only sure thing there is in investing.
