Now that the state Public Disclosure Commission has vindicated Richard Pope by upholding his complaint against Jane Hague and adding some more charges of its own, the P-I is exposing the Republican county councilwoman’s true character:
“Hague has habit of blaming others
“By NEIL MODIE
“P-I REPORTER
“King County Councilwoman Jane Hague’s recent arrest on a drunken-driving charge wasn’t the first time she has blamed others after finding herself in trouble.
“In 2001, when the car Hague was driving collided with a Metro bus in downtown Seattle, … she told him it was his fault. …
“In 1999, when the King County ombudsman found Hague had violated the county ethics code in 1997, she blamed it on bad advice from the council’s attorney — who flatly denied that she had ever asked for such advice or that he had given it to her. …
“And when she was arrested on the drunken-driving charge in Bellevue on June 2 … Hague … blamed … her husband … [and] questioned [the officer’s] qualifications to administer blood-alcohol tests ….
“Brett Bader, Hague’s political consultant, said [publicity of Hague’s] problems ‘is nothing more than an effort by her political opponents to take advantage of an unfortunate situation … for their own political gain.’”
But hey! Hague’s not alone in blaming her problems on others:
“State Democratic Chairman Dwight Pelz said … ‘if the public had known about this DUI in a more timely fashion, Richard Pope would not be our candidate right now.’”
That one’s so good I’m gonna post it again:

“Iran agrees to reveal nuclear info
“By GEORGE JAHN
“ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER
“VIENNA, Austria — Iran on Monday offered some cooperation with an International Atomic Energy Agency probe of an alleged secret uranium processing project linked by U.S. intelligence to a nuclear arms program.
“The Iranian pledge was contained in a memorandum reached between Iran and the IAEA …. In it, Tehran also outlined its timetable for providing other sensitive information sought by the IAEA ….
“Less than a week ago, Iran and the Vienna-based IAEA announced an agreement on the timetable for full Iranian cooperation with the agency’s nuclear investigation. …”

Why Bush Hasn’t Caught Osama Yet
“KABUL, Afghanistan — The U.S. military said Monday it regretted any offense it may have caused by giving out a soccer ball with the word Allah written on it as part of a public relations exercise in Afghanistan.
“At least one of several balls dropped by helicopter to children in eastern Khost province had a small picture of the Saudi Arabian flag. The flag features in Arabic script the Islamic declaration of faith, which contains the words Allah and the Prophet Muhammad.
“Villagers were ‘upset and angry’ when they saw the ball, said Khost Gov. Arsalah Jamal. … Muslims treat with the utmost respect any printed matter containing verses of the Koran or the name of Allah or his prophet on it. Most would find the idea of kicking a ball emblazoned with those two names as deeply offensive.”
Roger Rabbit Commentary: A little sensitivity training for our troops might go farther than the as-yet-unclaimed $50 million reward.
Sgt. Dean Welch, a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition, said Friday’s “distribution of soccer balls was done in the spirit of goodwill, something that we hoped would bring Afghan children some enjoyment.”

Local Federal Detention Center A Hell Hole
Here’s another one of Gonzales’ legacies: If you’re poor or have an ethnic name, your body is a plaything for jail guards, and nothing will happen to them:
“Not one of the 20 recent sex-related incidents at a SeaTac prison has resulted in a prosecution
“By RUTH TEICHROEB
“P-I INVESTIGATIVE REPORTER
“Behind the towering gray walls of the Federal Detention Center lurks a sex-charged world where guards are accused of gawking at porn videos, ordering inmates to expose their breasts, molesting them in elevators and rape. …
“Victims say they had no choice but to submit to predatory guards who controlled every aspect of their lives at the 10-story, 1,000-bed prison south of Sea-Tac Airport.
“‘I was afraid,’ said former inmate Stephanie Freeman, who accused a guard of rape. ‘How the heck do you feel safe when you are locked up with guards like that?’
“At least 20 sex-related incidents involving correctional staff and inmates have been reported at the prison in the past five years, according to Department of Justice records obtained through public disclosure. The allegations ranged from groping during pat-downs to forced sex.
“Yet not a single Bureau of Prisons employee at the facility has been prosecuted for sex-related crimes during that period. …
“Sexual abuse by correctional employees is the most common inmate complaint against staff members nationwide, according to federal statistics. Between 2000 and 2004, 822 allegations of staff sexual abuse were received by the Office of the Inspector General, the branch of the Justice Department that investigates. …
“Punishment is rare: Less than 10 percent of sexual-abuse allegations result in prosecutions. Of those who are convicted or plead guilty, 75 percent receive probation.”
Roger Rabbit Commentary: What did you expect from an Attorney General who thinks raping and torturing foreigners is okay? That he wouldn’t think raping and torturing American citizens is okay, too? At least Gonzo is consistent.
Or maybe his U.S. attorneys were too busy looking for a Democrat who filled out his voter registration form incorrectly to worry about federal jail guards who rape prisoners.

“Gonzales departure won’t end probes
“By DAVID ESPO
“AP SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT
“WASHINGTON — Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ resignation Monday … drew … a vow from Democrats to pursue their investigation into fired federal prosecutors. …
“Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the investigation would not end with Gonzales’ leaving. ‘Congress must get to the bottom of this mess and follow the facts where they lead, into the White House,’ said the Nevada Democrat. …
” … Gonzales … served as general counsel and secretary of state when his patron was governor of Texas …. As counsel, Gonzales helped get Bush excused from jury duty in 1996, which kept him from having to disclose a drunken driving arrest in Maine in 1976. … In a legal memo in 2002, he contended in 2002, he contended that Bush had the right to waive anti-torture laws and international treaties that protected prisoners of war. The memo said some of the prisoner-of-war protections contained in the Geneva Conventions were ‘quaint’ …. Human rights groups later contended his memo led directly to the abuses exposed in the Abu Ghraib prison scandal in Iraq.
“Of greater political concern was the Democratic majority that took office in Congress earlier this year. Leahy soon began investigating the firing of federal prosecutors. Testifying on April 19 before the Judiciary Committee, Gonzales answered ‘I don’t know’ and ‘I can’t recall’ scores of times when asked about events surrounding the firings. … Several Democrats called for a perjury investigation ….”
Roger Rabbit Commentary: This shouldn’t end with Gonzo’s resignation. The perjury investigation — and indictment and prosecution if warranted — should go forward. Then had him over to an international tribunal for war crimes prosecution. Then, when they get done with him, hand him over to the Texas Bar Association.

She admits that a terrorist attack gives the publicans an advantage and claims she’s the best of the democrats, not the best of the publicans and democrats, just the democrats.
“It’s a horrible prospect to ask yourself, ‘What if? What if?’ But if certain things happen between now and the election, particularly with respect to terrorism, that will automatically give the Republicans an advantage again, no matter how badly they have mishandled it, no matter how much more dangerous they have made the world,” she said.
“So I think I’m the best of the Democrats to deal with that as well,” she concluded.

“DALY CITY, Calif. — One of the biggest sources of political donations to Hillary Rodham Clinton is a tiny, lime-green bungalow that lies under the flight path from San Francisco International Airport.
Six members of the Paw family, each listing the house at 41 Shelbourne Ave. as their residence, have donated a combined $45,000 to the Democratic senator from New York since 2005, for her presidential campaign, her Senate re-election last year and her political action committee. In all, the six Paws have donated a total of $200,000 to Democratic candidates since 2005, election records show.
It isn’t obvious how the Paw family is able to afford such political largess. Records show they own a gift shop and live in a 1,280-square-foot house that they recently refinanced for $270,000. William Paw, the 64-year-old head of the household, is a mail carrier with the U.S. Postal Service who earns about $49,000 a year, according to a union representative. Alice Paw, also 64, is a homemaker.
The Paws’ political donations closely track donations made by Norman Hsu, a wealthy New York businessman in the apparel industry who once listed the Paw home as his address, according to public records. Mr. Hsu is one of the top fund-raisers for Mrs. Clinton’s presidential campaign. He has hosted or co-hosted some of her most prominent money-raising events.
I have an idea for next AG – a Republican who has demonstrated some independence from the Bush misadministration and respect for the rule of law!

The picture of Bush and Reichart, and the fundraiser in general, got me wondering.
With Bush’s popularility still stuck in the high 20’s/low 30’s (depending on the poll and the date), why would Reichart want to be seen with Bush, much less photographed with him on such friendly terms? Wasn’t he trying to “distance” himself from Bush in the last election????
I think the answer to that question is that Reichart believes fundraising from the fatcat Republican supporters is more important than actually – you know – appealing to the voters. He figures pictures with Bush isn’t going to hurt him with the 1/3 electorate which is hard-core Republican, and he doesn’t care about the 1/3 of the electorate which wouldn’t vote Republican under ANY circumstances. But he hopes that with enough money in his campaign fund, he can sway just enough independents to win in 2008 – like he did in 2006.
Now, how can he do this, given that his district is trending Democrat and the Republican party has been engaged in a slow-motion train wreck over the past several years? (Note to readers: insert mental image from the beginning of movie “The fugitive” here).
The answer: by negative campaigning, making the opposing candidate appear to the otherwise uninformed to be a crackpot, a dangerous would-be communist or terrorist sympathiser, etc., etc., etc. He is gambling that using those funds to hit hard with some last-minute TV ads will pay off. It certainly beats the alternative – you know, actually discussing issues with the voters, where he might be met with uncomforatable questions, such as why he supports Bush in every vote unless the Republican Party instructs him not to?
@52
Oh my lord, you may be the stupidest person on planet Earth…
Are you taking into account the deaths/health complications from the depleted uranium weapons not only for american soldiers but the citizens of of bosnia/kosovo?
The WHO conducted studies in 2001 that they documented here:
Depleted uranium in Mitrovicë/Mitrovica region – The mission checked this matter specifically with KFOR has and they confirmed that no attacks using depleted uranium rounds took place in the mainly Serb-inhabited municipalities in the northern part of Mitrovica/Mitrovicë. In addition, KFOR confirmed that no depleted uranium rounds were used in attacks in the Morka Gora area near Zubin Potok.
• Depleted uranium in the VJ forces – The mission was informed from military sources that there is absolutely no evidence that the VJ used any depleted uranium munitions or armour plating in Kosovo. This clarification was sought by the mission following press articles (e.g. Time magazine, 22 January 2001) in which VJ officers in Serbia mentioned that depleted uranium materials were available within their armoury of weapons. Apparently, these weapons were not deployed in Kosovo at the time of the conflict in 1999.
• Decline in milk production and birth defects in lambs – The mission was made aware of various reports by farmers in villages claiming that animals had encountered problems in giving milk or breeding healthy lambs. The mission sought advice from agricultural specialists at FAO and no information was found by them in the literature to link these issues with depleted uranium.
• Uranium testing in drinking water – The Administrative Instruction (AI) 2/1999 (Health) in force in Kosovo defines the drinking water quality requirements expected from all drinking water sources. The AI is based on previous water testing regulations that were used in the past by the Federal Socialist Republic of Yugoslavia. The standard testing protocols do not monitor for the presence of uranium in the drinking water. Whilst the mission believes the likelihood of depleted uranium affecting drinking water supplies is low, the introduction of the routine testing of this parameter may help to reassure public confidence regarding 31 the presence of all sources of uranium. The possibility of testing for this parameter by the IPH laboratories should be considered.
• Soil testing equipment – The Institute of Radiological Protection in Obiliq/Obilic has asked for equipment to undertake soils testing for the presence of uranium. In the view of the mission this does not seem to be necessary since it is understood that others (public bodies and military agencies) have found little or no radiation. Since actual numerical values were not made available to the mission, it is suggested that this recommendation should be reviewed following the publication in March 2001 of the UNEP Balkans Task Force report.
By the way, did we find any WMDs in bosnia/kosovo?
Did we claim there were any there, idiot?
Was bosnia/kosovo threatening to us?
Did we claim they were, idiot?
Did the UN approve of the america invading bosnia/kosovo?
They called for “unspecified measures” to be taken, while NATO explicitly supported and planned military action.
Are you trying to be stupid, or do you think we don’t know this stuff?

Democrats are caught with their hands in the cookie jar. Let’s count how many democrats were caught in the “Tennessee waltz” sting.
Kathryn Bowers (d) & Ward Crutchfield (d)
Former Sen. Ward Crutchfield, D-Chattanooga, and former Sen. Kathryn Bowers, D-Memphis, have also pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing. http://www.wkrn.com/node/114608
former state Sen. Roscoe Dixon(d) Ford and former Sen. Roscoe Dixon were convicted at trial while the others pleaded guilty.
Dixon, also a Memphis Democrat, was convicted late last year of bribery andextortion and is serving a five-year prison sentence. http://www.wkrn.com/node/114608
John Ford (d) Ford, who spent three decades in the Senate and took the most bribe money by far of the Tennessee Waltz lawmakers, is a member of one of Memphis’ most active political families. He is the uncle of former Congressman and U.S. Senate candidate Harold Ford Jr., now chairman of the centrist Democratic Leadership Council.
John Ford still faces unrelated federal charges in Nashville, where he is accused of misreporting $800,000 in payments from contractors with TennCare, the state’s medical insurance program for the poor. http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/s.....TE=DEFAULT
Marv’s commentary – And like a true democrat/liberal, why do for yourself when you can have the government pay for you-
State Sen. John Ford may ask for a public defender to represent him, so the taxpayers can pay for his defense against charges of bribery, conspiracy and witness intimidation. http://www.tennessean.com/apps.....2/50526002
Marv’s commentary – Of course this is a liberal blog so the crimes of your party not only go unreported, your democrat criminals get tacit approval.
This works well here, unfortunately the moderates that decide how elections will turn out are seeing the democrat party for what it is, and it’s no different from the publican party.

WASHINGTON — For the last 15 years, California authorities have been trying to figure out what happened to a businessman named Norman Hsu, who pleaded no contest to grand theft, agreed to serve up to three years in prison and then seemed to vanish.
Since 2004, one Norman Hsu has been carving out a prominent place of honor among Democratic fundraisers. He has funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions into party coffers, much of it earmarked for presidential hopeful Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.

There is always corruption in both parties, but the level of corruption exhibited by the corrupt Republican Party, from the Abramoff K Street scandals, to the politicization of the Justice System under Gonzalez, to the massive dishonesty that ended with us having our entire military completely stuck in the Middle East and draining the federal budget, FAR outweighs anything seen from the Democratic Party in modern times. I asked the question if scooter worked for the person that outed the cia agent, richard armitage. Let me ask this , who is scooter’s boss? Who outed the spy? Are they the same person?
I’m sure you know richard armitage admits he’s the one that outed the undercover agent.
“Oh I feel terrible. Every day, I think I let down the president. I let down the Secretary of State. I let down my department, my family and I also let down Mr. and Mrs. Wilson,” he says.
When asked if he feels he owes the Wilsons an apology, he says, “I think I’ve just done it.”
In July 2003, Armitage told columnist Robert Novak that Ambassador Wilson’s wife worked for the CIA, and Novak mentioned it in a column. It’s a crime to knowingly reveal the identity of an undercover CIA officer. But Armitage didn’t yet realize what he had done. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories.....1433.shtml
Armitage’s admission led to a flurry of anxious phone calls and meetings that day at the State Department. (Days earlier, the Justice Department had launched a criminal investigation into the Plame leak after the CIA informed officials there that she was an undercover officer.) Within hours, William Howard Taft IV, the State Department’s legal adviser, notified a senior Justice official that Armitage had information relevant to the case. The next day, a team of FBI agents and Justice prosecutors investigating the leak questioned the deputy secretary. Armitage acknowledged that he had passed along to Novak information contained in a classified State Department memo: that Wilson’s wife worked on weapons-of-mass-destruction issues at the CIA. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14...../newsweek/
@106 I asked the question if scooter worked for the person that outed the cia agent, richard armitage. Let me ask this , who is scooter’s boss? Who outed the spy? Are they the same person?
No, you simply asked if Libby worked for Armitage. Armitage was the first person to publicly disclose Plame’s name to a reporter, but that does not mean that Libby was lying to protect him. In fact, in makes no sense at all that Libby would lie to protect Armitage. Why don’t you dust off a little something called common sense and try to figure out on your own who Libby might be trying to protect. I’ll give you some time to ponder that one.
If you’ve actually followed this case, you’d know that although Armitage was the first person to leak Plame’s name, the leaking was done to several reporters and administration officials (including Karl Rove) are still actively bullshitting us (or, as Matthew Cooper delicately put it this past weekend – dissembling) about what really happened.
But if you still want to beleive that Libby was lying to protect Armitage, you’re more than welcome to. It wouldn’t even be in the top five of the stupidest things I’ve heard from you this week.

Of course I knew scooter wasn’t working for the man that outed the cia agent, I was pointing out the stupidity of your post when you said scooter was protecting his boss that outed the spy. Scooter’s boss didn’t out the spy, armitage did.
Since we both agree that armitage was the person that outed the spy, how could you write “#100 Libby was lying to protect his boss from being indicted for outing a CIA agent.” The spy was already outed by armitage.
Any reason armitage wasn’t indicted for outing the spy, besides the fact he’s not one of bush’s guys?
@108 Of course I knew scooter wasn’t working for the man that outed the cia agent, I was pointing out the stupidity of your post when you said scooter was protecting his boss that outed the spy.
What’s stupid about it? It’s absolutely true. His boss was Dick Cheney, and it is widely known that Cheney wanted to use the fact that Wilson’s wife was a CIA agent as a way to discredit him (by making his fact-finding tour look shady). Why else would Libby perjure himself and obstruct justice?
Scooter’s boss didn’t out the spy, armitage did.
Actually, several people were leaking her name to reporters at around the same time. You’re not stupid enough to think that was a coincidence, are you?
Since we both agree that armitage was the person that outed the spy, how could you write “#100 Libby was lying to protect his boss from being indicted for outing a CIA agent.” The spy was already outed by armitage.
Because anyone with an IQ over 10 knows that Armitage wasn’t the only one doing it and that there were others who had a strong motive to have it publicly known that Valerie Plame was Joe Wilson’s wife in order to discredit him.
Any reason armitage wasn’t indicted for outing the spy, besides the fact he’s not one of bush’s guys?
Because, as I’ve already explained to you, in order to prosecute someone under the statute, you have to prove that there’s actual malicious intent. That can’t be proven for Armitage, but the reason the investigation took the path it did was because Fitzgerald believed that he could prove intent with Cheney (or possibly Bush or Rove). Libby’s efforts to deflect Fitzgerald likely saved his boss (Cheney) but got him rung up for obstruction of justice and perjury.
I know this is a complicated case. If you want to brush up a bit, the Wikipedia page is actually very helpful.
Also, a blogger named Marcy Wheeler has written extensively about the case, and might be able to help you understand it better. You can use the Google for her book if you’d like. There are times where I’m actually convinced that you’re smart enough to wrap your head around this stuff if you just take the time to recognize that your railings against “groupthink” are actually a pretty evolved form of groupthink in itself.

And here the juror statements after the trial are instructive. Several of them wondered why the VP wasn’t also indicted; they clearly understood that Libby was acting at the behest and in defense of Cheney.

Precisely. The Plame case was a gift to spinmeisters. It was complicated enough that you could know 90% of the facts and still be programmed to reach a number of incorrect conclusions.

San Francisco hopes to reverse black flight
SAN FRANCISCO — Wayne Cooksey joined the flight of African-Americans from this city last year to escape soaring rents and buy a home. Michael Higgenbotham left six years ago for a safer neighborhood and better schools for his three children.
….
African-Americans are abandoning this famously progressive city at a rate that has alarmed San Francisco officials, who vow to stop the exodus and develop a strategy to win blacks back to the city.
…
“Black people really don’t matter in San Francisco. It’s what this generation of political leadership inherited,” says Chuck Collins, president of the YMCA of San Francisco. “There’s been a very uneasy truce with the black population.”
…
The task force “ought to study what’s wrong with the white power structure, why they can’t be responsive to the African-American community,” says Amos Brown, pastor of Third Baptist Church and president of the local NAACP chapter. “They didn’t need us anymore.”

What if?’ But if certain things happen between now and the election, particularly with respect to terrorism, that will automatically give the Republicans an advantage again, no matter how badly they have mishandled it, no matter how much more dangerous they have made the world,” she said.

@52
Oh my lord, you may be the stupidest person on planet Earth…
Are you taking into account the deaths/health complications from the depleted uranium weapons not only for american soldiers but the citizens of of bosnia/kosovo?
The WHO conducted studies in 2001 that they documented here:
http://www.who.int/ionizing_ra.....um_Eng.pdf

Democrats are caught with their hands in the cookie jar. Let’s count how many democrats were caught in the “Tennessee waltz” sting.
Kathryn Bowers (d) & Ward Crutchfield (d)
Former Sen. Ward Crutchfield, D-Chattanooga, and former Sen. Kathryn Bowers, D-Memphis, have also pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.
http://www.wkrn.com/node/114608
former state Sen. Roscoe Dixon(d)
Ford and former Sen. Roscoe Dixon were convicted at trial while the others pleaded guilty.
Dixon, also a Memphis Democrat, was convicted late last year of bribery andextortion and is serving a five-year prison sentence.
http://www.wkrn.com/node/114608
John Ford (d)
Ford, who spent three decades in the Senate and took the most bribe money by far of the Tennessee Waltz lawmakers, is a member of one of Memphis’ most active political families.

Marv’s commentary – And like a true democrat/liberal, why do for yourself when you can have the government pay for you-
State Sen. John Ford may ask for a public defender to represent him, so the taxpayers can pay for his defense against charges of bribery, conspiracy and witness intimidation.

It turns out that article I linked to yesterday about contributions to the hillary campaign is getting notice even by the liberal los angeles times.

Marvin,
There is always corruption in both parties, but the level of corruption exhibited by the corrupt Republican Party, from the Abramoff K Street scandals, to the politicization of the Justice System under Gonzalez, to the massive dishonesty that ended with us having our entire military completely stuck in the Middle East and draining the federal budget, FAR outweighs anything seen from the Democratic Party in modern times. Even my fucking cat knows that.

Henry Waxman has already held hearings on the lost money but I’m not sure about the lost weapons. Right now, the Democratic Congress is so inundated with various Republican scandals, they really don’t have the resources to crack down on it all.
Much of the investigation into the wasted Pentagon spending was being done by the U.S. Attorney in Los Angeles who was forced out of her job for “performance reasons”.
I’d love to see the Democrats do more, but I actually pay attention to what’s happening, so I have a better understanding of the uphill battle they have to climb in order to do so.

You (Lee) said #100 Libby was lying to protect his boss from being indicted for outing a CIA agent.

@108
Of course I knew scooter wasn’t working for the man that outed the cia agent, I was pointing out the stupidity of your post when you said scooter was protecting his boss that outed the spy.
If you want to brush up a bit, the Wikipedia page is actually very helpful.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plame_Affair
