    In that sense, emphasizing the sleaziness of Giuliani’s operation, the smear campaign directed at decent public servants like Vindman and Yovanovich, and the essential underlying corruption of the purpose of the operation is crucial. Schiff pointing out Trump smear-Tweeting in real time is effective. But he needs to focus more on the utter sleaziness and weakness that it conveys. That’s what people will respond to. Labeling it “witness tampering” is okay as a way of opening the attack. But he and House Dems need to focus on the fundamental and pathologically weak and petty nature of a President “punching down” at career public servants doing their duty. That’s something voters can relate to in a personal and visceral way.

    Trump offers a huge opportunity in this regard. He won’t be silenced. And he will not refrain from this behavior throughout this process. Schiff, Pelosi, and every influential House Dem must be prepared to jump on every single such opportunity to portray Trump and the GOP for who they are in this disgraceful episode. Trump will be Trump. And Republicans will be Republicans. In the last three years there has never been a better chance for Democrats to use that.
