    If you do go to Bumbershoot, you are a hypocrite. Why? Because, you people on HA claim to be liberals, and as liberals, you support minimum wager workers making at least $15/hours. But there are people who work at the Seattle Center who make less than $15/hour. If you really supported poorly paid workers, you would boycott any company, event, or organization that paid workers less than $15.

    The United States became a superpower largely due to scientific innovation. American scientists created the first atomic bomb. American engineers created the first aircraft to break the sound barrier. American scientists and Engineers built the vehicles that took us to the moon. American computer scientists built the internet.

    Each of these discoveries created whole industries. Miniaturization of computer systems during the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs laid the foundation for the revolution in the computer industry during the 1970s and 80s. Were it not for ARPA’s work and work by the NSF, the internet would exist.

    As the US continues to cut back on scientific investment, more basic research will move over seas. It may not impact the US right away, but soon the big discoveries will be in places like China and India. That will lead to bold innovations that will create whole industries that dont’ exist today full of good paying jobs. Already, China is investing hundreds of billions in R&D and education. They understand that so much of the United State’s success was due to it’s advantage in science and technology.

    Instead of understanding this, the GOP continues to see investments in the future as wasteful. And while I agree the private sector should play a larger role, the fact is they do not. Corporations used to support pure scientific research, AT&T had Bell labs, Xerox had PARC; today those are no more. They’ve been spun off into independent profit centers so their ability to do the pure scientific research is vastly diminished. More broadly, corporations have come to view R&D as a cost and something that takes away from shareholder value. They invest just enough to stay competitive but no more. They take the same strategy with people, treating employees as costs they have to live with as opposed to vital assets to the company.
