    rhp6033 spews:

    # 4: How employers make you work for free (in the retail world): Executives have turned to rather sophisticated reporting tools which track costs, including wages, as relative to the sales revenue through the store. This gets passed through to the regional managers, who are rewarded/fired based upon the performance of the region as a whole. They, in turn, put the pressure on store managers, who are required to make ever-increasing revenues based on fewer work hours each quarter. The top 20% get a bonus, the bottom 20% get fired. No excuses for special circumstances, location issues, etc. What they want to create is a fear in the managers that their job is always on the chopping block unless they “find a way” to increase revenues and/or cut work hours to reach the assigned goal.

Of course, after two or three years of this the managers have done everything they can reasonably do, legally, to reach their assigned goals. But each quarter the goals get moved again. So they start looking for other ways to meet the goals.

One way is to simply require the employees to transfer some of their work to off-the-clock work. Mandatory meetings held before work hours begin are “off the clock”. Time spent stocking the shelves before the store opens, straigtening the merchandise, or in closing the store becomes “off the clock” work.

To avoid wage claims, the managers usually try to pin it as a “performance issue” – saying that the worker simply wasn’t working fast enough and was doing work which he/she should have been performed during their regular shift.

Once the manager has extracted as much benefit as he/she can from that method, the “split shift” or “variable shift” may be employed. This requires the worker to come in only during what is expected to be the busiest hours, then go home, and come back two or three hours in time for the next busy period. Some workers are required to come in three times a day,for only two hours each time, but essentially most of a 12-hour day is taken from their otherwise free time for only six hours of wages.

A particularly insidious variation of this is when the manager sends workers home if the store traffic is slow, but they are “on call” to come back within a very short notice if traffic picks up. That, along with day-to-day scheduling, makes employees earning only minimum wage to devote 12 hour days, 7 days a week, to being “on call” for their job, yet receiving sometimes only 15 to twenty hours of actual pay – at minimum wage. The employer gets a side benefit also: some workers stay at the store “on the clock”, simply because they can’t afford the commuting costs of going home and coming back to work, and the variable scheduling makes it difficult for workers to get other jobs because they can’t schedule interviews.

If someone DOES file a claim with the authorities, the executives will say the store manager was acting outside his authority, and cast him off like rubbish. The manager will take the blame, not the employer, who will simply replace him with somebody else who knows how to “play ball” and fudge the payroll reports.

Union Leader newspaper blasts Romney for not releasing taxes

By John Aravosis on 7/26/2012 02:55:00 PM

The Manchester Union Leader is the uber-conservative newspaper in New Hampshire that Republicans desperately seek the endorsement of. This, from them, is big.

Perhaps the most troubling aspect of this entire controversy is the one NOT being discussed much: How did Romney get himself into this position in the first place? He has been running for office for a long time. His presidential aspirations predate the tax returns in question.

What could he possibly have been thinking when he failed to ensure that everything contained in those documents was above reproach? Or was he simply not thinking at all? Surely he could not have arrogantly believed that he could withstand any storm that developed by bluffing his way through it? If so, it hasn’t worked.

If Romney intends to win, he is going to have to make the tax forms public. This storm won’t go away. It will distract from his policy debate with Obama — and it will distract from Obama’s failures, providing the incumbent with the smokescreen he is attempting to create.

Romney needs to end this. He needs to end this by revealing the tax documents, explaining them, explaining the legality behind his actions, and then he needs to move on.

Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad news for Willard.

Mitt’s British Blunders: How It Played In The UK Press

    David Taintor-July 26, 2012, 2:33 PM17106
Mitt Romney is off to a spectacularly bad start in London, at least according to the British press ridiculing the Republican candidate on his first major foreign trip.

British officials — and the newspapers that cover them — took offense to Romney questioning whether London is well-prepared to handle the security issues ahead of the summer games. Romney called the situation “disconcerting.” British Prime Minister David Cameron hit back, saying there is no doubt “Britain can deliver.”

“We are holding an Olympic Games in one of the busiest, most active, bustling cities anywhere in the world,” Cameron added. “Of course it’s easier if you hold an Olympic Games in the middle of nowhere.”

Then there was the issue of whether Romney forgot Labour leader Ed Miliband’s name, referring to him as “Mr. Leader.” All in all, “not a great day at the office,” Rupert Murdoch’s The Sun tabloid wrote.

    Romney ought to BUY England.

The entire Conservative paradigm is an endless loop of chicken and egg arguments. They quote each other exclusively. Rush Limbaugh quotes Ann Coulter when she quotes Karl Rove who got his information from John Boehner when he was quoting Rush Limbaugh who got his information from Karl Rove who asserts his information came from “confidential sources” who cite Karls own office as the source for the material in the first place and is first reported on Fox who got their source material from those same unnamed sources that Karls office claimed they got them from, which is the master propagandist in his own office who cites other “unnamed sources” when they’re quoting John Boehner’s quotations on similar “unnamed sources” from the local Moonie-owned newspaper, which then asserts its immunity as a journalistic institution.

They NEVER source their information, they never give any information to check outside of their own source material, they never offer any reference materials, they only quote each other in an entirely circular clusterfuck of bullshit. Everything they say is entirely unverifiable outside of their own media machine.

And the TeaBagg neonazis just eat it up like its The Stuff. Goebbles would be so proud of Karl Rove and the GOP/Tealiban. Of course, they emulate other aspects of that period as well. Their purpose is ultimately the same.

    # 30: I’m glad to see the article. I had previous links to articles about the race from the P.I. and Seattle Times, the event was listed by both as being among the top sports history events in the region for the 20th century. Unfortunately, those articles have been deleted from the archives.

A few notes in addition to the article: One of the reasons for the UW team falling behind early was that they never heard the start – there was quite a distance between the starting gun, fired next to the German crew, and the lane the Huskies were in, and a stiff breeze carried away the sound. They didn’t realize that the race had started until they saw the other boats had all started rowing.

The UW coxswain couldn’t get the stroke rower (Hume’s) attention, because in his feverish state he was essentiall comatose, and rowing only from habit. So the cox set the stroke rate by taking a boat davit and banging the stroke rate he wanted on teh gunnels of the shell. The rowers responded to the rythm. Even modern rowers are amazed at the stroke rate they maintained. The other boats could hear/feel the banging through the water, so they tried to match the stroke rate.

It’s a great come-from-behind victory by a bunch of working-class guys who barely made enough from odd jobs to keep paying tuition in college, against the best of elite rowers, most of whom came from wealthy backgrounds. Hitler left the grandstands as soon as the results were clear, he had no intention of congratulating the winners.

By the way, the U.W. Women’s crew originated at the turn of the century when few other colleges had women’s crew teams. The women who turned out for crew at the U.W. mostly came from logging camps, where they were the daughters of loggers and grew up doing lots of physical labour helping out with the camp and the kitchens (hauling wood and water, etc.). One coach, in describing them, said they were so strong, “you could roller skate across their backs”.

I forgot to mention, the rowing shell which won the gold in the 1936 Olympics is hung from the ceiling of the Pocock Rowing Center on the south side of the Mountlake Cut (right before it joins Lake Union, downhill from the original Red Robin restaurant). There is a plaque on each seat, memorializing the crew member who occupied that seat during the race.

HA! I have a BS from Tufts and two doctoral degrees from the UW. I own a thriving medical practice. I own a home on Queen Anne and my kids get straight-A’s from some very tony and expensive private schools. I have a gorgeous wife, also a doctor. We donate heavily to charities we support. How’s that for success? (I won’t be like puddy and brag about the size of the cars I rent)

I happen to have been raised in working class suburbs of a big midwestern city, my dad and grandad UNION sheet metal workers, the other grandad a UNION teamster. Mine was the first generation to even conceive of going to college. Dad’s dad was also an immigrant, coming over on a boat in steerage at age 10 with his 15 year old brother in 1910. His wife, my grandmother, was the youngest of 12 and the only one born here – they were migrant farm workers in the teens and 20s in Wisconsin and thereabouts.

I learned early in life two things: NEVER vote Republican, and NEVER EVER cross a picket line. And always give to the poor, so I guess it’s three things.

Moreover, it was drilled in us by our parents, to my brothers and me, to always stay in school, maximize our education, get out of the life they had. Physical labor broke my father body, knees shot, hearing destroyed (banging on metal all day every day), hands deepy arthritic, but he and my mom worked hard every day – we often came home from school to an empty house til they got home. But they were able to do this for us – good wages, bought, demanded, through the power of collective action – UNIONS, a working person’s only avenue to level the playing field when dealing with a large and ruthless corporation that sees you as a commodity to exploit and discard.

Unions, and schools, and the ability to earn a living wage and see that your kids are going to have a better life than you had – that’s the American dream. A dream greedy nasty fucks like you are determined to steal from every working person you can vilify and exploit.

So yes, SOCIAL JUSTICE is a banner I’ll march under with pride, a goal and an ethos that informs my very being – you have that right.

Only a person who has never had to work would be able to embrace a lie like that.

Why do Republicans and conservatives hate work, and people who work?
    Why?

Because it makes it easier to steal from them – their wages, their aspirations, their lives.

With tens of trillions of dollars sloshing around the international hide-from-taxes banking system, it is obvious that the wealth of the world – something created ONLY through labor – has been sytematically stolen by the greedy fucks defended daily by our shameless and insipid trolls.

I have no expectation that they (our trolls) actually benefit from that system – they’re the collaborators and the capos – they are victims that are convinced, for petty payments, to betray their fellows, for a time.

What a hollow, compromised, indefensible way to live.

I certainly did – I was born very smart and extremely good-looking ;)
Seriously – I was thinking about that – I have gifts, clearly, and as my parents inculcated, from those given much, much is expected, and I’ve tried to live my life giving back. However, whatever inherent talents I have, they would be meaningless without community and resources created by others. Schools, communities, grants and loans, physical infrastructure, great teachers, inspiring colleagues, the NIH and the UW, professional societies, community hospitals – I could never have achieved my limited achievements without so so much given me – and I have a massive obligation to give back.

Wonder if the douche nozzle that’s running against Maria Cantwell has ever had The Economist publish anything favorable about him. I was cleaning out some of my bookmarks and stumbled across this old gem:

Of all the bills that would put a price on carbon, cap-and-dividend seems the most promising. (A carbon tax would be best of all, but has no chance of passing.) Ms Cantwell has a Republican co-sponsor, Susan Collins of Maine, and says she is hearing positive noises from a few other Republicans, such as Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. The most attractive thing about the bill is that it is honest. To discourage the use of dirty energy, it says, it has to be more expensive. To make up for that, here’s a thousand bucks.

This challenges the conventional wisdom in Washington, DC, that the only way to pass a global-warming bill is to disguise what’s in it. Leading Democrats try to sell cap-and-trade as a way to create jobs and wean America from its addiction to foreign oil. (It’s about “jobs, jobs, jobs and jobs,” said Nancy Pelosi, the speaker, last year.) Focus groups say this message ought to resonate. Frank Luntz, a pollster, released a study last month showing that voters are unswayed by melting ice caps but will support an energy bill that sticks it to the Saudis and creates American jobs. In real life, though, voters hear counter-arguments. Sure, cap-and-trade will create jobs, but it will destroy them, too. If the goal is to reduce dependence on foreign energy, why not mine more American coal? The only sound reason for acting to curb global warming is to curb global warming. Ms Cantwell does not put it so bluntly, but her bill speaks for itself.

You really believe everyone on welfare and other forms of handouts desperately wants a 40-hr./week job????

There you go again with the hideous, greed-driven lies.

I was watching ‘Bowling for Columbine’ last night, that insightful and moving documentary by that great American filmmaker, Michael Moore.

One of the stories was about a little 6-year old in Michigan who found a handgun at home, took it to school, and shot and killed another 6-year-old.

One story line was about how the public was clamoring to have the prosecutor try the kid as an adult. Often that pressure, according to the prosecutor, came from gun-rights advocates, and overt racists, as the kids were both black. I’ll leave that aside for now, we talked a lot about little boy GUN NUTS on the other thread.

The more compelling, and instructive, story line concerned the mother of the little boy who found the gun.

She was a single mother in her teens or early 20′s, and I think this was her only kid. Because she was on some form of assistance, she was forced to get a job by the ‘welfare-to-work’ program in Michigan. That meant that she had to get up before dawn, ride a bus 40 miles to a swanky mall. There she worked two jobs – about 70 hours per week. She rode the bus back at night. As a consequence she rarely saw her kid awake.

Despite working 70 hours per week she was not able to earn enough to pay the rent, and had moved in with her brother. It was there that her kid found the gun that wrecked so much tragedy.

Now think about this, several things:

-What have we achieved as a society by taking a mother away from the day-long and day-to-day contact with her young child, in order for her to work at ‘Dick Clark’s American Diner’ and the ‘Fudge Factory’? What good has been createed by this particular set of rules and this situation? Could we do better?
Some here talk about interest and investments a lot – what sort of investment, from the point of view of that little boy as a grown up, are we missing out on by shattering his relationship with his mother? What good are we gaining by taking his mother away from him and demanding she be a waiter at ‘Dick Clark’s American Diner’? What opportunity cost is being incurred? I think it’s huge.

-How is it that working 70 hours per week is not sufficient to earn enough for shelter and food and other essentials? How is it that we have a system that demand more and more labor for less and less income? Because that’s what we have. Wages as a percent of GDP are have been plummeting while corporate profits soar, see here, Business Insider. Moreover, for about 35 years, or since the onset of neoconservative economics, Reagan, and the success of the assault on unions, real income for working people has stagnated despite expansion of the economy and ongoing increases in productivity and efficiency, see here.

This tragedy, dead little 6-year-old at the hands of another, gun-toting, 6-year-old, is a direct consequence of a system which shatters families, a system that is designed to exploit every waking hour from as many essentially powerless workers as possible while paying them as little as possible, an clearly in this case, not enough to survive. Despite working 70 hours per week at minimum wage. (BTW, the employers, including Dick Clark, derived a tax break for ‘hiring’ people on welfare).

This story is emblematic of the entire system of free labor that we’re careening toward. ev worries about unsustainable systems, well, this is it. ev throws around slurs like “lazy fucks” and “envy and hate” and “union myths” – a tapestry of lies designed to vilify and misdirect – a refinement of the Cadillac-driving Welfare Queen eating steak every night, brought to us by that sick doddering fuck Ronald Reagan. What we have are people working harder and harder for less and less – the products of their labor systematically stolen from them, and the infrastructure for getting ahead – schools, healthy communities, actual health – systematically destroyed, or at least allowed to rust away without maintenance.

The ev’s and the Blofelds of the world, nasty, angry, greedy, resentful – doing the dirty work for their masters and for a system of deep corruption and injustice – remind me of these ‘people’ (particularly the dude with the Hitler mustache).

Your guy Obama has driven us to $16 TRILLION of National Debt plus another $125 TRILLION of unfunded liabilities…
What does obama have to show for this nightmare for our kids??

Economic estimates reflecting a weak 1.5 percent growth rate in the second quarter quickly became a political football Friday, as Republicans used the stat to chastise President Obama over his economic policies and bolster warnings about “looming tax hikes” next year.
The Commerce Department reported Friday that the economy grew at the 1.5 percent rate from April to June, as Americans cut back sharply on spending. The rate matched expectations — but expectations were low.
In a hastily convened conference call, the Mitt Romney campaign pointed to the figure as the latest sign the economy under Obama simply cannot produce enough growth to put millions of jobless Americans back to work.
“It’s a picture of a decelerating economy,” said Romney economic adviser Dean Glenn Hubbard. “At that pattern, the economy simply will never return to full employment.”
A campaign email with a snapshot of the gloomy GDP headlines also poked at Obama’s recent “you didn’t build that” gaffe. The email was titled: “The Obama Economy: Barack Obama Built This.”

That’s all obama has done with $6 TRILLION more debt?? It’s horrible. But you libs cannot look beyond today. Kind of like the little kid with a credit card running up the bill figuring someone else down the road will pay for it.
You can’t see that?? Come on man.
Obama PROMISED to lower the National Debt to $5 TRILLION. It’s now $16 TRILLION.

I guess a high class doctor with a wife as a doctor profiting at the expense of the ill is ok, but making profits other ways is not??

I never said making a profit was wrong – you’re creating a fairly obvious straw man – which implies a great deal of weakness in your argument.
I likened my profession to being a plumber – sometimes hired to be creative, as in maintaining health or building a house, sometimes called in in an emergency, to fix an immediate problem like an illness or a leak. Fairly similar, and should be appropriately compensated for the difficulty and the risk and the investment in training and education.

You make too much money dude.

You have absolutely no idea about my income, and therefore you’re blowing smoke. In fact, my specialty is less well compensated than many others, despite being quite demanding and rigorous.

The point was, I have achieved a measure of success and yet still see and support the plight of working people, despite your not being able to grasp that. I come from humble, working-class roots, and was able to achieve what I did, however limited, because of infrastructure and opportunity and support from the broader community – an object lesson in how to foster and support aspiration and achievement. Your entire position is predicated on vilifying people who work, or on the poor and those unable to do or to find meaningful work – it’s a clear support for undermining and devaluing labor – a long running dream of the right to create a vast ocean of powerless, docile, commodity workers to be exploited and discarded.

Your position is the unsustainable one, and immoral and wrong, to boot.

They denied from the start that anybody in a position of authority in the Romney campaign made such an abusive statement about the sitting president of the United States. So the question is, why would you react when I say you, I mean the Obama campaign in the way you did?

Unless real evidence and the actual identity of the Romney advisor in question surface, that denial stands and the Obama Campaign will have merely eroded their own credibility AGAIN!

The Obama campaign has elevated poll-testing and focus-grouping to near-clinical heights, and the results drive the president’s every action: his policies, his campaign venues, his targeted demographics, his messaging. That Mr. Obama felt required—teeth-gritted—to address the “you didn’t build that” meme means his vaunted focus groups are sounding alarms.

The obsession with tested messages is precisely why the president’s rare moments of candor—on free enterprise, on those who “cling to their guns and religion,” on the need to “spread the wealth around”—are so revealing. They are a look at the real man. It turns out Mr. Obama’s dismissive words toward free enterprise closely mirror a speech that liberal Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren gave last August.

Of course, they wrap it up in a neat package where they pretend that they, and their children, worked harder and were more intellgent than everyone else, and therefore are entitled to have the world shower them with keys to the exclusive schools, country clubs, and high-paying executive jobs. Mitt didn’t build it: Romney took $1.5bn from USG for 2002 Olympics

By John Aravosis on 7/27/2012 01:15:00 PM

It seems that Mitt Romney, who of late has been crowing about the “fact” that lots of business ventures in America happen with absolutely no help from the government whatsoever, got his own help from the US government for the 2002 Olympics that Romney oversaw. From Mother Jones:

As Romney chastises the president for pointing out that successful business ventures benefit from a larger social compact and accuses critics of pining for “free stuff,” Romney is simultaneously touting an Olympic effort that, more than any other in American history, succeeded thanks to public investment—some of it sunk into questionable projects of marginal value to the Salt Lake games. “The $1.5 billion in taxpayer dollars that Congress is pouring into Utah is 1.5 times the amount spent by lawmakers to support all seven Olympic Games held in the U.S. since 1904—combined,” Donaldng. Barlett and James Steele reported for Sports Illustrated in 2001. Those numbers were adjusted for inflation.

This CAN’T be true. Maybe the idiot ev can tell us how this is wrong.

Romney’s ‘We Did Build This’ Events Feature Businesses Built With Government Subsidies And Contracts

By Aviva Shen on Jul 25, 2012 at 3:12 pm

Today, the Romney campaign is hosting an entire series of campaign events based on President Obama’s misinterpreted comment about small businesses. While Obama’s full speech made a “no man is an island” argument, the Romney campaign has seized on the quote, “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that” as evidence of Obama’s disdain for small business owners.

Romney, ignoring the fact that he has echoed this same sentiment on multiple occasions, organized 24 “We Did Build This” events in the battleground states of Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Virginia, Ohio, Iowa, Florida, Missouri, North Carolina, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Nevada. At each event, local business owners are speaking about their self-sufficiency in running a business and how government is hindering their growth.

But, like the New Hampshire business owner showcased in Romney’s attack ad on the issue, many of these business owners have received significant support from the government, a ThinkProgress analysis finds.

I’m SURE this is wrong, too.

    # 115: Some more speculation I heard this morning. Romney is in London, to attend the opening ceremonies and “one event”, and to ostensibly show off his diplomatic skills.

Well, that last part didn’t work out for him so well. Maybe they might have been more forgiving if he hadn’t already said in his book that they have “tiny houses, tiny roads, and build items nobody in the world wants to buy”.

But the speculation is which event he’s going to attend. Romney’s wife has an entry into the Olympic events, her dressage horse, which essentially is a dancing horse. Those horses are specially bred and cost a lot of money to keep and train. Of course, Ann Romney doesn’t ride the horse, she just owns it.

Even though Romney will probably avoid the event because pictures of him watching his wife’s horse compete would be a political bomb for him, his wife will probably slip off to watch the event. And that might have more to do with the “campaign event” in London than any political reason.

So what does that mean for tax returns? Well, a dressage horse is considered by those that own them an investment, and the Romney’s probably wrote off the cost of the horse (on a depreciated schedule), all of it’s cost of upkeep and training, even down to the transportation to London for the games. Most Americans would look upon owning a horse for riding as an expensive hobby (unless they were a rancher), but for the Romney’s, it is probably subsidized by the government as a tax write-off. If “losses” were then used to cancel out what would otherwise be taxable income from Romney’s other wealth, it would look that much worse.

Romney’s going to continue to take hits for not releasing his tax returns throughout the campaign. He must have calculated that the cost of not releasing the returns is less than the damage which would be done if the returns were released.

Maybe Mitt should have gone to France. He knows and loves that country. He could have spoken French with the PM, impressing him with his correct pronounciation of “dressage”. He could have dined on fine French cuisine instead of kidney pie. He could have strolled through the very vineyards where he served his Mormon mission. What were his handlers thinking, Ev? The guy was In Great Britain for a day and now he’s the butt of their jokes for the next few weeks, if not the rest of his life.

    # 23: Fresh from trying to recover from his slightly disparaging remarks regarding the London Olympics, Romney jumped right into another controversy. Exiting from 10 Downing Street and a meeting with the Prime Minister, Romney couldn’t help but do a little name-dropping – you know, to let the folks back home know how important he is. So he talked about meeting with the Prime Minister, some other dignitaries, and with the leader of MI-6.

Oops. Somebody should have told him what British press and politicians all know – that officially, MI-6 does not exist, is not to be spoken about in public, and it’s leaders are never to be identified publically or any mention made of their meetings or schedules. (Security, you know).

So right after falsely trying to accuse the President of releasing classified information for partison advantage, Romney violates a basic security protocol of one of America’s biggest allies – just to be a name-dropper, in effect.

From Huffington Post, the similarities between the Islamic and Mormon faiths,

Islam teaches that Muhammad was the last prophet and Mormonism teaches that a line of prophets extended from Joseph Smith all the way to the present with Thomas S. Monson, who is currently considered their prophet.

While in some ways neither Islam nor Mormonism is very much like Christianity, the two faiths actually have a lot of similarities. For example, both had founding prophets who received visits from an angel, leading to revelation of Scripture. Both consider the family unit as the foundation for religious life, and both have an insistence that religion is their complete way of life.

Islam and Mormonism both require fasting and ritual cleansings. They both believe theirs is the original religion of Adam. Both Islam and Mormonism allowed four wives but both forbid homosexuality and bisexuality. Both religions forbid alcohol and gambling.

This may be alarming to some, but both Islam and Mormonism teach that marriage can extend into the afterlife. Neither worships their founding prophets, but both hold them with special respect. Both religions heavily proselytize and believe everyone should belong to their faith. In order to lead, both Islam and Mormonism do not require formal seminary training, but take regular members and move them up into leadership roles.

Oddly enough, both religions had a split after their prophet’s death with one side believing that the faith should continue though the prophet’s descendents and the other side rejecting that. For Muslims, this caused the bloody divide between Shiites and Sunnis that we hear so much about in the press. For Mormons, this caused the divide between the Later Day Saints, which make up about 99 percent of Mormons, and others.

Both Muhammad and Joseph Smith were taunted for their work and driven out by locals. Muhammad moved from Mecca to Medina, and Joseph Smith had to move from Illinois to Missouri. Both Muhammad and Joseph Smith established their own city-states, with Muhammad ruling Medina and Joseph Smith ruling Nauvoo, Ill.

Both Islam and Mormonism have Scripture that can justify violence and murder, as does the Bible. While Mormons have not acted violently in the U.S. for quite some time, there was an incident back in 1857 called the Mountain Meadows Massacre, which happened on Sept. 11. The massacre was led by prominent Mormon leader John D. Lee, who was trying to exact revenge on some emigrants but when the emigrants surrendered, the militia killed men, women and children in cold blood, and then tried to cover it up.

I take it you fucks thought you were nominating a good Christian. Think again.

In the meantime, more GOP voter suppression:

Apparantly the Secretary of State position is pretty important. Katherine Harris stopped the re-count in Florida in 2000 to award the Presidency to George W. Bush, which was upheld by a Republican majority on the Supreme Court. Subsequent media re-counts showed a 500 vote victory by Bush, but the Bush administration closed the office which received complaints of voter intimidation in Minority precincts – a heavy police presence with officers checking ID’s of anyone approaching the voting location, etc. And in 2004, the Ohio Secty of State handed a close election to George W. Bush again by purging voter rolls through illegal “caging”, re-distributing ballot boxes to create long lines and multiple hours of waiting time to vote in Democratic precincts, but excess machines and no lines or waiting times in Republican precincts. Complaints to the Ashcroft-led Justice Dept. were round-filed without investigation or action.

Now in 2012, there are multiple efforts once again to steal the election, and the Republican Secty of State for Colorado is taking front stage. He’s working with the American Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank, to come up with ways to purge voters from the polls who might be tempted to vote Democratic. As part of his efforts, he is asking for a list which the federal goverment makes available for employers to check on the eligibility of workers, and he plans to use that list to cross as many minority people – apparantly especially targeted at hispanics – off the registered voter lists as possible.

The problem is, employers have complained for years that the list is notoriously inaccurate. A person’s name might appear on the list because they were in the U.S. on a student visa many years previously, but they are never deleted from the list if they subsequently obtain U.S. citizenship. And that’s aside from the usual errors one finds in such a list, due to name confusion, or simply data entry errors.

What’s more, this guy says he’s not covered by the law which prohibits purging the voter registration polls less than ninety days before an election, because he claims this isn’t a widespready purge, but an individual investigation of each individual. Which is, of course, a completely bullshit argument.

Colorado Sectretary of State in Forefront of Election

So, the GOP is proving once again, that it doesn’t expect to win this election in a fair debate on the qualifications and the issues. It avoids them like the plague. Instead, it casts out lies, innuendos, half-truths, billionaire ad buys, and voter disqualification in order to squeek out a win.
