# 4: How employers make you work for free (in the retail world): Executives have turned to rather sophisticated reporting tools which track costs, including wages, as relative to the sales revenue through the store. This gets passed through to the regional managers, who are rewarded/fired based upon the performance of the region as a whole. They, in turn, put the pressure on store managers, who are required to make ever-increasing revenues based on fewer work hours each quarter. The top 20% get a bonus, the bottom 20% get fired. No excuses for special circumstances, location issues, etc. What they want to create is a fear in the managers that their job is always on the chopping block unless they “find a way” to increase revenues and/or cut work hours to reach the assigned goal.
Of course, after two or three years of this the managers have done everything they can reasonably do, legally, to reach their assigned goals. But each quarter the goals get moved again. So they start looking for other ways to meet the goals.
One way is to simply require the employees to transfer some of their work to off-the-clock work. Mandatory meetings held before work hours begin are “off the clock”. Time spent stocking the shelves before the store opens, straigtening the merchandise, or in closing the store becomes “off the clock” work.
To avoid wage claims, the managers usually try to pin it as a “performance issue” – saying that the worker simply wasn’t working fast enough and was doing work which he/she should have been performed during their regular shift.
Once the manager has extracted as much benefit as he/she can from that method, the “split shift” or “variable shift” may be employed. This requires the worker to come in only during what is expected to be the busiest hours, then go home, and come back two or three hours in time for the next busy period. Some workers are required to come in three times a day,for only two hours each time, but essentially most of a 12-hour day is taken from their otherwise free time for only six hours of wages.
A particularly insidious variation of this is when the manager sends workers home if the store traffic is slow, but they are “on call” to come back within a very short notice if traffic picks up. That, along with day-to-day scheduling, makes employees earning only minimum wage to devote 12 hour days, 7 days a week, to being “on call” for their job, yet receiving sometimes only 15 to twenty hours of actual pay – at minimum wage. The employer gets a side benefit also: some workers stay at the store “on the clock”, simply because they can’t afford the commuting costs of going home and coming back to work, and the variable scheduling makes it difficult for workers to get other jobs because they can’t schedule interviews.
If someone DOES file a claim with the authorities, the executives will say the store manager was acting outside his authority, and cast him off like rubbish. The manager will take the blame, not the employer, who will simply replace him with somebody else who knows how to “play ball” and fudge the payroll reports.

A few notes in addition to the article: One of the reasons for the UW team falling behind early was that they never heard the start – there was quite a distance between the starting gun, fired next to the German crew, and the lane the Huskies were in, and a stiff breeze carried away the sound. They didn’t realize that the race had started until they saw the other boats had all started rowing.
The UW coxswain couldn’t get the stroke rower (Hume’s) attention, because in his feverish state he was essentiall comatose, and rowing only from habit. So the cox set the stroke rate by taking a boat davit and banging the stroke rate he wanted on teh gunnels of the shell. The rowers responded to the rythm. Even modern rowers are amazed at the stroke rate they maintained. The other boats could hear/feel the banging through the water, so they tried to match the stroke rate.
It’s a great come-from-behind victory by a bunch of working-class guys who barely made enough from odd jobs to keep paying tuition in college, against the best of elite rowers, most of whom came from wealthy backgrounds. Hitler left the grandstands as soon as the results were clear, he had no intention of congratulating the winners.
By the way, the U.W. Women’s crew originated at the turn of the century when few other colleges had women’s crew teams. The women who turned out for crew at the U.W. mostly came from logging camps, where they were the daughters of loggers and grew up doing lots of physical labour helping out with the camp and the kitchens (hauling wood and water, etc.). One coach, in describing them, said they were so strong, “you could roller skate across their backs”.
I forgot to mention, the rowing shell which won the gold in the 1936 Olympics is hung from the ceiling of the Pocock Rowing Center on the south side of the Mountlake Cut (right before it joins Lake Union, downhill from the original Red Robin restaurant). There is a plaque on each seat, memorializing the crew member who occupied that seat during the race.

I love, when I go to Home Depot (reluctantly), and the employee happens to complain about something – like inadequate heat in front of the big doors in winter – I ask loudly whether they’re in a union and if they thought that workers banding together might be able to address the shitty conditions.

I usually go to Ace. Ace is a co-op and seems to treat their folks well. The same folks have been working at the one near my house for years and they always seem happy enough.
If I ever moved, one of the things I’d look for in a new neighborhood is a really good quality hardware store. I doubt I’d buy a house that didn’t have a good quality hardware store within a 2 mile radius of it.

I go to True Value Hardware stores. Locally owned and knowledgeable help in almost every store I’ve ever shopped at. And decent prices too.
Home Depot is great for some major purchases like Water Heaters, Water Softeners, some Appliances and Deck Material (I used a product called Evergrain for front & back decks..doesn’t scratch like Trex).
Lowe’s is worse than Home Depot in my experience.

We need a full throated offence on liberal solutions – things that actually work for people – like the People’s Budget, support of UNIONIZATION, feminism and reporductive choice (a big fuck you to the Catholic Church), actual protection of the environment – like a real industrial policy for transitioning away from fossil fuels and other unsustainable extractions of resources like fisheries and forests – massive investment in education and infrastructure, subsidization and enforcement of actual paid leave and vacations for all workers, extended and paid maternity/paternity leave, available affordable quality childcare, excellent public schools – an agenda centered around ensuring a quality, productive, fulfilling life for every citizen, and a big ‘FUCK YOU’ to the exploiters and the greed-head and the free-labor conservatives .

I happen to have been raised in working class suburbs of a big midwestern city, my dad and grandad UNION sheet metal workers, the other grandad a UNION teamster. Mine was the first generation to even conceive of going to college. Dad’s dad was also an immigrant, coming over on a boat in steerage at age 10 with his 15 year old brother in 1910. His wife, my grandmother, was the youngest of 12 and the only one born here – they were migrant farm workers in the teens and 20s in Wisconsin and thereabouts.
I learned early in life two things: NEVER vote Republican, and NEVER EVER cross a picket line. And always give to the poor, so I guess it’s three things.
Moreover, it was drilled in us by our parents, to my brothers and me, to always stay in school, maximize our education, get out of the life they had. Physical labor broke my father body, knees shot, hearing destroyed (banging on metal all day every day), hands deepy arthritic, but he and my mom worked hard every day – we often came home from school to an empty house til they got home. But they were able to do this for us – good wages, bought, demanded, through the power of collective action – UNIONS, a working person’s only avenue to level the playing field when dealing with a large and ruthless corporation that sees you as a commodity to exploit and discard.
Unions, and schools, and the ability to earn a living wage and see that your kids are going to have a better life than you had – that’s the American dream. A dream greedy nasty fucks like you are determined to steal from every working person you can vilify and exploit.
So yes, SOCIAL JUSTICE is a banner I’ll march under with pride, a goal and an ethos that informs my very being – you have that right.

I was watching ‘Bowling for Columbine’ last night, that insightful and moving documentary by that great American filmmaker, Michael Moore.
One of the stories was about a little 6-year old in Michigan who found a handgun at home, took it to school, and shot and killed another 6-year-old.
One story line was about how the public was clamoring to have the prosecutor try the kid as an adult. Often that pressure, according to the prosecutor, came from gun-rights advocates, and overt racists, as the kids were both black. I’ll leave that aside for now, we talked a lot about little boy GUN NUTS on the other thread.
The more compelling, and instructive, story line concerned the mother of the little boy who found the gun.
She was a single mother in her teens or early 20’s, and I think this was her only kid. Because she was on some form of assistance, she was forced to get a job by the ‘welfare-to-work’ program in Michigan. That meant that she had to get up before dawn, ride a bus 40 miles to a swanky mall. There she worked two jobs – about 70 hours per week. She rode the bus back at night. As a consequence she rarely saw her kid awake.
Despite working 70 hours per week she was not able to earn enough to pay the rent, and had moved in with her brother. It was there that her kid found the gun that wrecked so much tragedy.
Now think about this, several things:
-What have we achieved as a society by taking a mother away from the day-long and day-to-day contact with her young child, in order for her to work at ‘Dick Clark’s American Diner’ and the ‘Fudge Factory’? What good has been createed by this particular set of rules and this situation? Could we do better?
Some here talk about interest and investments a lot – what sort of investment, from the point of view of that little boy as a grown up, are we missing out on by shattering his relationship with his mother? What good are we gaining by taking his mother away from him and demanding she be a waiter at ‘Dick Clark’s American Diner’? What opportunity cost is being incurred? I think it’s huge.
-How is it that working 70 hours per week is not sufficient to earn enough for shelter and food and other essentials? How is it that we have a system that demand more and more labor for less and less income? Because that’s what we have. Wages as a percent of GDP are have been plummeting while corporate profits soar, see here, Business Insider. Moreover, for about 35 years, or since the onset of neoconservative economics, Reagan, and the success of the assault on unions, real income for working people has stagnated despite expansion of the economy and ongoing increases in productivity and efficiency, see here.
This tragedy, dead little 6-year-old at the hands of another, gun-toting, 6-year-old, is a direct consequence of a system which shatters families, a system that is designed to exploit every waking hour from as many essentially powerless workers as possible while paying them as little as possible, an clearly in this case, not enough to survive. Despite working 70 hours per week at minimum wage. (BTW, the employers, including Dick Clark, derived a tax break for ‘hiring’ people on welfare).
This story is emblematic of the entire system of free labor that we’re careening toward. ev worries about unsustainable systems, well, this is it. ev throws around slurs like “lazy fucks” and “envy and hate” and “union myths” – a tapestry of lies designed to vilify and misdirect – a refinement of the Cadillac-driving Welfare Queen eating steak every night, brought to us by that sick doddering fuck Ronald Reagan. What we have are people working harder and harder for less and less – the products of their labor systematically stolen from them, and the infrastructure for getting ahead – schools, healthy communities, actual health – systematically destroyed, or at least allowed to rust away without maintenance.
The ev’s and the Blofelds of the world, nasty, angry, greedy, resentful – doing the dirty work for their masters and for a system of deep corruption and injustice – remind me of these ‘people’ (particularly the dude with the Hitler mustache).

Perhaps I should mention that neither one of my parents ever belonged to a union. My father was even a Goldwater Republican, my mother a Roosevelt Democrat. But despite my father getting a college degree and becoming an engineer, and my mother a school teacher, they never forgot their roots. A number of men from my Dad’s work, obviously union pipefitters and metal workers, came up to me at his funeral and told me how much they appreciated my Dad, and how he didnt’ “put on airs” and understood their problems, and could talk to them on an equal basis. I was kind of shocked – didn’t everyone do that?

# 115: Some more speculation I heard this morning. Romney is in London, to attend the opening ceremonies and “one event”, and to ostensibly show off his diplomatic skills.
Well, that last part didn’t work out for him so well. Maybe they might have been more forgiving if he hadn’t already said in his book that they have “tiny houses, tiny roads, and build items nobody in the world wants to buy”.
But the speculation is which event he’s going to attend. Romney’s wife has an entry into the Olympic events, her dressage horse, which essentially is a dancing horse. Those horses are specially bred and cost a lot of money to keep and train. Of course, Ann Romney doesn’t ride the horse, she just owns it.
Even though Romney will probably avoid the event because pictures of him watching his wife’s horse compete would be a political bomb for him, his wife will probably slip off to watch the event. And that might have more to do with the “campaign event” in London than any political reason.
So what does that mean for tax returns? Well, a dressage horse is considered by those that own them an investment, and the Romney’s probably wrote off the cost of the horse (on a depreciated schedule), all of it’s cost of upkeep and training, even down to the transportation to London for the games. Most Americans would look upon owning a horse for riding as an expensive hobby (unless they were a rancher), but for the Romney’s, it is probably subsidized by the government as a tax write-off. If “losses” were then used to cancel out what would otherwise be taxable income from Romney’s other wealth, it would look that much worse.
Romney’s going to continue to take hits for not releasing his tax returns throughout the campaign. He must have calculated that the cost of not releasing the returns is less than the damage which would be done if the returns were released.
British newspaper headline, “Mitt the Twit”. Heh. The paper is owned by Rupert Murdoch. Ouch!!

Complaints to the Ashcroft-led Justice Dept. were round-filed without investigation or action.
Now in 2012, there are multiple efforts once again to steal the election, and the Republican Secty of State for Colorado is taking front stage. He’s working with the American Heritage Foundation, a right-wing think tank, to come up with ways to purge voters from the polls who might be tempted to vote Democratic. As part of his efforts, he is asking for a list which the federal goverment makes available for employers to check on the eligibility of workers, and he plans to use that list to cross as many minority people – apparantly especially targeted at hispanics – off the registered voter lists as possible.
The problem is, employers have complained for years that the list is notoriously inaccurate. A person’s name might appear on the list because they were in the U.S. on a student visa many years previously, but they are never deleted from the list if they subsequently obtain U.S. citizenship. And that’s aside from the usual errors one finds in such a list, due to name confusion, or simply data entry errors.
What’s more, this guy says he’s not covered by the law which prohibits purging the voter registration polls less than ninety days before an election, because he claims this isn’t a widespready purge, but an individual investigation of each individual. Which is, of course, a completely bullshit argument.

So, the GOP is proving once again, that it doesn’t expect to win this election in a fair debate on the qualifications and the issues. It avoids them like the plague. Instead, it casts out lies, innuendos, half-truths, billionaire ad buys, and voter disqualification in order to squeek out a win.
I think Roger Rabbit was right, in his discussion of the 2008 elections. Democrats need to win by more than 5% to offset Republican election stealing schemes.
