- It looks like Rodney Tom has fucked over transit in King County so badly, that he might as well put his dick in the tailpipe of a Metro bus at this point.

- To say nothing of the Columbia River Crossing.

- There might be a longer piece given the amount of time Lee and I dedicated to making fun of him, but Lou Guzzo has died.

- Congrats to UNITE HERE for their contract with Hilton.

- The metonymy of Olympia is especially galling

- Jean Godden is more confident than I am of the Tunnel Machine. Hope she’s right.

- The Teanaway is all things to Washington recreationists and wildlife lovers. Its North Fork road gives access to renowned trail destinations in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness and Wenatchee Mountains — Ingalls Pass-Ingalls Lake, Longs Pass, Van Epps Pass and remote Lake Ann. The river valley is in rain shadow, allowing car campers to enjoy sunshine when it’s drizzly west of the Cascade Crest. A wolf pack populates the river’s remote West Fork.

Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown has offered to be a mediator between BART’s unions and management. If he doesn’t make management offer double digit increases, like he did in 1997, it will work. The trains BART use are not your normal subway trains, they are wider, and faster, and go through an underwater tunnel in a known earthquake zone, so they should get a little more in hazard pay. If that recent contract offer had not been tied to hard to meet benchmarks, I think that the unions would have accepted it. What Mayor Willie Brown(got to use first names, Jerry Brown was mayor of Oakland at the time) got in the deal then, won’t work today. In 1997, the rolling stock wasn’t going on 40.

Although Willie Brown had a transit criais of his own, the MUNI meltdown of 1998. On his watch, MUNI took delivery of new rolling stock that was plagued with problems, and a new train control system in the Market Street Subway. Both happening at the same time caused a lot of delays, and it was faster to walk down Market Street than to take the bus or train.

Over here on the dry side the SR and various local/regional types are similarly pissed at Rodney. We now have a Spokane north side bypass which is one third complete, barely used and has no source of funding to finish. y guess is that Rodney will have difficulty finding funding for his next campaign.

Perhaps the Spokane-area State Senators may have a common ally, with one’s from Seattle, against Senator Tom. I am just suggesting a truce on this issue, not saying they should agree on everything.

On the way in, I was sleepy and put on conservative radio.

Did you know that the press was not supposed to attack Paula Dean because she was an Obama supporter? Apparently it’s shocking to conservative for liberals to condemn another liberal for wrongdoing. This may explains why conservatives never condemn their own for their wrongdoing.

@10. Also while listening to conservative radio, They were adamantly defending Zimmerman.

Again the same theme, they were shocked, SHOCKED that the liberals would attack a Hispanic for shooting someone Black. In their minds it didn’t matter that Zimmerman killed the kid for no reason. Since he was latino and liberals are catering to(their words) latinos , liberals shouldn’t be criticizing what a latino did.

I meant some groups that oppose LGBT rights have used that term, I am not sure about the FRC.

One of the reasons I got more interested in the equality side, came last year. When a former city councilmember came out, and called her life a waste because she had been afraid to tell everybody who she was. Part of the reason was probably because when she was an educator, it was a firing offense. The other was cultural. I had met Cheryl Chow when she was a councilmember, and she was a nice lady. At the time, I did not know what aLesbian was. I was thinking, people who had done a lot of good for this city, within city hall and out, should not be in the position of calling their life a waste because of what others may think.

@4 What does the Cabela’s location have to do with it? Cabela’s will put a store anywhere someone pays them to. They’re one of the most predatory chain retailers out there; they expect municipalities to build a $50 million store for them at taxpayer expense in exchange for a couple hundred minimum-wage jobs. The communities that fall for this must be awfully desperate for minimum-wage jobs.

(Full disclosure: Roger Rabbit flipped Cabela’s stock a few years ago and made a shitload of money from it. I know a good thing when I see it; this company rips off taxpayers more efficiently than anyone else except professional sports team owners.)

Kudos for the Marysville police in this case. They worked it really hard and left no cartridge case unturned, except they couldn’t find the bullet that killed that unfortunate teenage girl.

Of course, the suspect is presumed innocent until found guilty, so at this point, we want to be careful about what we say about a person who is only accused and not convicted of anything.

Based on what’s being reported in the media, it appears this young girl, a straight-A student with her whole life in front of her, lost everything because some drunk’s idea of a good time was driving through a populated area and shooting randomly at houses, vehicles, and pedestrians.

If the perpetrator is convicted, let us hope that consecutive sentences make sure he never sees the light of day again. He should be required to go to rehab, too. Make him sober up and then spend 50 or 60 years sitting in a small concrete cage reflecting on the innocent life he wantonly took for no damn reason at all.

  28. 31

    Roger Rabbit spews:

@16 I wouldn’t say Zimmerman killed Martin for no reason. It looks like Martin jumped him and Zimmerman was getting beaten up. That’s material to whether he should be convicted of murder or manslaughter, but there’s no way Zimmerman should walk, because legally this wasn’t self-defense. You can’t instigate, provoke, or start a fight and then claim you had to shoot the other guy because he was thumping you. Our self-defense laws don’t allow that. If Zimmerman had done what the police dispatcher told him to do, i.e. stayed in his vehicle and waited for the police to arrive, instead of taking the law into his own hands, nobody would have got hurt. He’s a vigilante killer, and deserves to be convicted of manslaughter. I doubt the murder charge will stick, though, if the jury concludes Martin attacked him, which appears to be what happened. I think the jury will go with manslaughter and he’ll serve about 5 years.

  29. 32

    Roger Rabbit spews:

@30 That’s one of the defining features of contemporary Republicans, but they have so many, it’s hard to single out just one. For example, it’s hard to say “Republican” without also including “stupid” in the same sentence. In fact, the phrase “stupid Republican” arguably is redundant.

I have a question for the Teafascists here.

Why is it, that the primary, really the only argument you had about “Obamacare” was the point about how it would cause all medical care one would be allowed to have to be dictated by the Government and only allowed if one had the correct (liberal) political affiliations, but yet you have “Red” (fascist) States passing laws requiring certain highly intrusive, and totally unnecessary medical procedures as a legal condition of allowing a woman to have a rather simple medical operation done if she chooses not to bear a child?

Why is it, that universal medical care would “destroy our freedoms” because it would make personal medical care a political football, yet you have one Governor of a State openly supporting and signing into Law a bill that would require a woman to request personal, written permission from him to be allowed an abortion even after that extremely intrusive ultrasound was completed?

How is that not Government dictating what medical care one is allowed? How is that not “big Government”?

    Roger Rabbit spews:

@34 Unfortunately for us, a lot of Zimmerman-behave-alikes are cops.

Cause-and-effect gets a little tricky here, but it appears that all across America a culture of violence is developing in police departments. In short, our police are becoming trigger-happy. See, e.g.,

    http://www.syracuse.com/news/i.....resti.html

No longer problem solvers, no longer the calm and steady voices in a storm, our police are to be feared by guilty and innocent alike, because our paranoid police now react to every real or imagined threat to “officer safety” not only with drawn guns but with blazing guns.

    http://www.wjla.com/articles/2.....76457.html

Most of the time, police who commit murder or manslaughter go unprosecuted and undisciplined … they just go back on duty after a brief “administrative leave with pay” while the “incident” is “investigated,” thanks to pro-police prosecutors, gutless mayors, and all-powerful police unions.

    http://thelibertarianrepublic......s-says-ok/

What’s changing is that we no longer just have rogue cops, we now have rogue police departments, and a rogue justice system that refuses to hold cops who commit murder or mayhem legally accountable.

    http://rt.com/usa/man-duenez-shooting-video-012/

The net result is that cops now literally hold the power of life and death over ordinary citizens, and boy do they know it. If you try to assert your constitutional rights to a cop, you just might get shot dead for your trouble.
