Former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown has offered to be a mediator between BART’s unions and management. If he doesn’t make management offer double digit increases, like he did in 1997, it will work. The trains BART use are not your normal subway trains, they are wider, and faster, and go through an underwater tunnel in a known earthquake zone, so they should get a little more in hazard pay. If that recent contract offer had not been tied to hard to meet benchmarks, I think that the unions would have accepted it. What Mayor Willie Brown(got to use first names, Jerry Brown was mayor of Oakland at the time) got in the deal then, won’t work today. In 1997, the rolling stock wasn’t going on 40.

One of the reasons I got more interested in the equality side, came last year. When a former city councilmember came out, and called her life a waste because she had been afraid to tell everybody who she was. Part of the reason was probably because when she was an educator, it was a firing offense. The other was cultural. I had met Cheryl Chow when she was a councilmember, and she was a nice lady. At the time, I did not know what aLesbian was. I was thinking, people who had done a lot of good for this city, within city hall and out, should not be in the position of calling their life a waste because of what others may think.

@4 What does the Cabela’s location have to do with it? Cabela’s will put a store anywhere someone pays them to. They’re one of the most predatory chain retailers out there; they expect municipalities to build a $50 million store for them at taxpayer expense in exchange for a couple hundred minimum-wage jobs. The communities that fall for this must be awfully desperate for minimum-wage jobs.
(Full disclosure: Roger Rabbit flipped Cabela’s stock a few years ago and made a shitload of money from it. I know a good thing when I see it; this company rips off taxpayers more efficiently than anyone else except professional sports team owners.)

Kudos for the Marysville police in this case. They worked it really hard and left no cartridge case unturned, except they couldn’t find the bullet that killed that unfortunate teenage girl.
Of course, the suspect is presumed innocent until found guilty, so at this point, we want to be careful about what we say about a person who is only accused and not convicted of anything.
Based on what’s being reported in the media, it appears this young girl, a straight-A student with her whole life in front of her, lost everything because some drunk’s idea of a good time was driving through a populated area and shooting randomly at houses, vehicles, and pedestrians.
If the perpetrator is convicted, let us hope that consecutive sentences make sure he never sees the light of day again. He should be required to go to rehab, too. Make him sober up and then spend 50 or 60 years sitting in a small concrete cage reflecting on the innocent life he wantonly took for no damn reason at all.

@16 I wouldn’t say Zimmerman killed Martin for no reason. It looks like Martin jumped him and Zimmerman was getting beaten up. That’s material to whether he should be convicted of murder or manslaughter, but there’s no way Zimmerman should walk, because legally this wasn’t self-defense. You can’t instigate, provoke, or start a fight and then claim you had to shoot the other guy because he was thumping you. Our self-defense laws don’t allow that. If Zimmerman had done what the police dispatcher told him to do, i.e. stayed in his vehicle and waited for the police to arrive, instead of taking the law into his own hands, nobody would have got hurt. He’s a vigilante killer, and deserves to be convicted of manslaughter. I doubt the murder charge will stick, though, if the jury concludes Martin attacked him, which appears to be what happened. I think the jury will go with manslaughter and he’ll serve about 5 years.
