People didn’t want to de-segregate the schools when ordered to do so, they just didn’t have religion as their loophole or get out of jail free card.
I think it sets a bad precedent to allow an individual to not do their job if they disagree with their job, but if that is what American citizens want then so be it – I could care less if they don’t want to do their job, so long as someone is there to do it.
I don’t get to tell my employer that their are things I don’t want to do because I don’t like it (or if went against my religious beliefs or beliefs in general)….they would fire me. And if I don’t agree then it is up to me to find a new job.
Do you think that if we allowed towns or governments (I don’t even know where you get a marriage license, and I don’t care), not to issue licenses then those entities will try not to employee people that would support same sex marriage? But I see issues for the courts that gay marriage does not create. One of the primary goals of marriage equality is the automatic survivorship rights conferred on married couples. But let’s say McMansion in Utah is solely owned by the man. Man dies and has more than one legal spouse. They all have equal survivorship so who gets to decide if and when to sell the property that was not originally legally theirs? Would a polygamist need to grant power of attorney to only one spouse while living to avoid probate issues? How does that conversation go with the other wives?
And I really don’t care. If a woman can convince more than one man to simultaneously stay with her ’til death do part…how does that effect my life? Not at all unless I’m one of those men and what I really want is a monogomous relationship in which case she’s not the one for me.

@37 There’s really not a survivorship issue we don’t already have. Most estates eventually are left to children, and more often than not there’s more than one child, and they almost always fight over who’s going to manage the estate and who gets what, no matter what the will says.
The big estate problem that polygamy poses is not so much for the surviving spouses as for the next generation. If you have four wives and twenty-four children, by the time the last wife is gone, the pie slices are mighty thin unless — as is likely — the last surviving wife gives the whole pie to her own kids and tells the children of the other wives to take a hike.
Now, my offspring is in a much better position. Even though I’m a rabbit, I have only one legal wife and one legitimate bunny. The bunny wasn’t born at the most auspicious time in our economy history, but was smart enough to get a degree in computer science, and therefore manages to stay employed at a decent salary despite the engineered destruction of our country’s middle class. She won’t have a pension like mine, and will have to work longer for less social security, but after her rabbit parents go up she will get my entire Stock Portfolio. She’ll have no financial worries in her old age. The only glitch is that she hasn’t made any bunnies, so I have no idea where the Rabbit Family Fortune goes after her.
