Curiosity didn’t kill the Rover. But controversy erupts.

Tomorrow is election day. Having difficulties completing your ballot? Here is the Progressive Voter’s Guide from Fuse.

Actual Headline: “Northwest ties to Hiroshima remembered on A-bomb anniversary”. Ummm…are we supposed to celebrate or something????

Sour note: Sikh Temple shooter was “a ‘frustrated neo-Nazi’ who led a racist white supremacist band.”

The good news for Mitt is that he “probably earned more than $50 million, and possibly as much as $60 million from the Italian directory sale of Seat Pagine Gialle SpA…. The deal turned into one of the biggest windfalls of his tenure.” The bad news: Mitt can’t really go to Italy anymore.

More science for the nutbaggers to deny: The impact of ocean acidification on shellfish.

Romney outraises Obama for third month in a row.

WA-10 Republican candidate Stan Flemming’s “atypical loan pushed the boundaries of federal law.”

    Obama’s haul in July: $ 75M

    Romney’s: $101.3M

    Romney’s cash on hand: $ 158M

Obama’s COH? Well, we don’t know that right now. What we do know is that his burn rate is substantial.

We also know that most of Romney’s cash is designated for the general, meaning he’s got even more to throw at Obama after the convention.

I assume that eventually this will result in more carbonic acid production and ocean acidification. Unless that carbon is turned into calcarious material by invertebrates or otherwise inactivated.

Meanwhile, on land, more CO2 means more and bigger plants.

Democrats and Republicans alike should be distressed by President Barack Obama’s disregard for constitutional limits on his authority. The president’s flouting of the separation of powers risks turning this country into something other than a representative democracy. Congress should move in a bipartisan rebuke of Obama’s overreach before he neuters that institution.

In a blatant challenge to the legislative branch, Obama by executive order tossed out the Clinton-era welfare reform that required able-bodied aid recipients to work, saying the federal government will no longer enforce the law.

I’m sick and tired of the rightwing meme that we have to continually suck up to, and bribe, the one-percenters with subsidies and tax breaks the rest of us don’t get in hopes they’ll provide jobs they, in fact, don’t provide.

So let’s try this instead. We’ll stay in recession for hte next 10 to 20 years, we won’t work for them, and we won’t buy stuff from them. Then they’ll have nothing, along with the rest of us, and we’ll see how they like having nothing.

The working class has been bullied by these whiny greedheads long enough. If they don’t like the cushy deal they already have, then I say make them pay their fair share of taxes, follow the same rules we have to follow, and live like the rest of us.

Hey, I didn’t invent this wonderful system called capitalism under which lazy unproductive rabbits make that kind of money just for owning esoteric electronic blips called “stock shares,” I merely exploit it like Republicans do.

Call me a hypocrite if you wish, but remember, there’s an important difference between me and them. To wit, I don’t sit here telling others to “work hard” while sitting on my fat ass doing nothing. To the contrary, I tell people they shouldn’t work at all, because working is for saps and suckers. We should all be capitalists. That way, we’ll all be rich, even though our economy produces nothing.

And, of course, if nobody works then nothing is what our economy will produce. All wealth comes from workers. Anyone who doesn’t understand that is ignorant about economics.

The article about Romney’s personal efforts in the purchase of the Italian phone company, and unloading it two years later for huge profits to another Italian phone company, probably has lots of “devil in the details”. But the following trends pretty much sum up the G.O.P., the one percenters, and Romney and his cohorts in particular.

    1. They insist that as long as they follow the rules, including any and all loopholes, that they did nothing wrong, even if it violates the spirit of the laws and regulations (to say monthing of moral issues). To make it worse, they insist that since you can’t hold them criminally or civilly responsible, you aren’t entitled to complain about it.

    2. It’s another example of making profits by passing the liabilities to others – often workers and collateral casualties. Their response if you complain? They grin, and say “Yea, it sucks to be you”. It’s a game for them, they’ve rigged the system so you can’t win, and they think it’s funny as hell when you complain about it. For them, it’s just more money to hide from taxation. For the rest of us, it’s our livelihood, our communtie’s economic health, and our retirements (or lack thereof).

“Romney released his numbers in standard fashion.”

Horseshit, Bob. The only “standard fashion” for a campaign to release fundraising figures is via the FEC. What the Romney people did was release an optional press release to brag about their great fundraising numbers. You can’t blame them for it. But calling this “standard fashion” is just plain bullshit.

“Obama released his total contributions in a tweet.”

Yes…the Obama campaign did not have as good a fundraising month as Romeny, hence the lack of a press release.

On the other hand, Obama has still raised 50% more than Romney for this campaign. Obviously, Obama had a huge (4 year) head start. Romney’s big numbers now are largely catch-up…and he still has a way to go to catch up with Obama.

I was sick most of last week, but Sunday afternoon I went to a party at my son’s house. Also attending were some old friends of ours who, sadly, have become right-wing zealots (too much exposure to Rush Limbaugh, I think).

Normally, at such social gatherings we just agree to disagree, then talk about families, jobs, etc.

But this Sunday, one of the fellows was adamant that President Obama was not going to win re-election. I asked him why. His response was, in general, that everyone he talks to doesn’t like him. He also insisted that “we” should all work together to vote the President out of office this November.

I pointed out that his “sample” was too small and insular a group to be a legitimate reference to the feelings of the community at large. That got him going on the subject for a while again. Then I asked him if, given the electoral college system, he thought that his vote and those of his compatriots would make a difference in deliverying Washington into the Romney camp. After he insisted that it would, I just smiled, and said “Good luck with that”.

We’re in a presidential campaign. It’s typical for info to be released well ahead of the actual FEC filings. Very few articles are written by people who wait for the FEC filings. Reminds me a lot of the guys who were peddling programs to cities where their muni bonds would be backed by funds which all but evaporated in 2012. Quite a few small towns and counties, especially in the south-east, ended up bankrupt or close to bankruptcy as a result. Of course, the fund managers already took their profits and bonuses and are long gone from the picture. The taxpayers are being asked to make up the difference – at a time of high unemployement (especially in those areas).

Of course, Romney and his types see nothing wrong with this picture – the local officials got the 293 page perspecuts in 8 point font which included a few sentences saying that all investments carry risks, didn’t they? Sucks to be you, folks!

No…it is not a matter of “perspecitve.” It is a matter of taking words out of context by selectively editing. It may be effective with the uninformed, but it is fundamentally dishonest.

You may remember, early on, the Romney people showing Obama in 2008 saying, “If we keep talking about the economy, we’re going to lose.”

Again…that was some good “hit politics” in that ad. But it was entirely dishonest to use the clip out of context.

It isn’t just “perspective” when an out-of-context quote is used to generate a completely different message from a person.

I hope you will have the honesty and decency to avoid the use of such tricks in these comment threads, and, more generally, in your life. We need more people around here to analyze and critically evaluate ideas and issues.

This is one time I won’t support what Harry Reid did. His spokesperson suggested over the weekend that Romney didn’t pay any taxes for 10 years. If that comment was unauthorized, Reid should repudiate it, and box his staffer’s ears (so to speak). If Reid did authorize this statement, and it’s his position, then either (a) he knows what’s in Romney’s tax returns, or (b) he’s guessing.

I’m against a U.S. senator guessing about something of this nature. The Senate Majority Leader shouldn’t lower himself to such tactics. Campaigns, too, must be above such behavior. They should leave that sort of dirty work to lowly ditch-digging bloggers like me.

The news said today that Romney was in his New Hampshire home today, “taking meetings”. I found this a bit surprising – I would have expected him to be on the road, campaigning hard in battleground states.

So who exactly are at those meetings? Maybe it’s campaign strategy meetings. Perhaps they’ve decided that their current strategy isn’t very effective, and Romney has called for a meeting on the issue. Or Romney’s campaign advisors are meeting with Romney to tell him to stick to the script, and to not make any extranious comments. Or Romney’s advisers are pleading with Romney to release the tax returns now, several months before the election, so any bad news will have time to become “old news” by November. Or maybe they are making a final decision on a vice-presidential nominee.

Or, Romeny could simply be conducting meetings with fundraisers, both for his campaign and for “independent groups”, the details of which won’t be available for months, if not years. After all, Romney went to Britain to secure bribes (er, “contributions”) from the very folks who are being investigated their for the LIBOR scandel, which may become a U.S. issue by the end of the year. It helps to have friendly people controlling the prosecutors’s ofice, eh?

A thought just occured to me concerning Romney’s tax returns. Perhaps he’s planning on releasing them two days before the election. Then he can say – “See, I released them! Like I said, nothing to see there!” Of course, it will take a week or so for the news folks to scour through them and find the ticking bombs.

Another possibility: His accountants have been busy drafting amended returns which have been scrubbed a bit to conceal the political liabilities a bit more.

It’s not like Romney’s never done this – in a previous election (1992?) he had insisted that he had paid taxes in both Utah and Masshachusetts, then after the fact made a “retroactive” payment of the Massachusetts taxes, to make sure he was qualified for the ballot. And, of course, there is his “retroactive” retirement at Baine Capital, as he seeks a retirement date which is more politically suitable for him – after the fact.

I filed one a few years back (mine was because I missed a big deduction).

Finding an occassional error (or additional deduction) might merit the filing of an amended return. The scenario I was postulating was that an entire decades worth of returns might be amended just before they were released, for political purposes – and only the amended returns made available to the news media.

Of course, we are only speculating, because at this point Romney has left us with nothing except speculation, by his refusal to release his returns. Some might say that “no news is good news”, but in politics “no news” creates a vacume which must be filled by -something.

As they say in litigation, “the defendant has always had all the information needed to exonerate himself, and his concealed that information from the authorities. We may therefore conclude that the information would be interpreted in a manner which is most harmful to the defendent’s case”.

    # 49: Karl Rove is the master of the smear job.

When he was doing local elections he would print up outrageous fliers, purporting to be from the opposition, in a “false flag” operation. In Alabama he started a whispering campaign against a sitting Supreme Court justice, claiming (without any truth whatsover) that he was a child molester who used his children’s charity to groom victims, in an attempt to win that election. The rumor went on to claim that his position made him too powerful for the news media to report the “truth” or posecutors or police to press charges. Then with George H.W. Bush, Rove hit the national stage, knocking off his primary opponants and winning the general election with help from the notorious “Willie Horton” ad.

Of course, with George W. Bush Rove became a permanant fixture in the White House, until he became too toxic in the later years of his administration to keep around any longer. He’s the author of the “Swift Boat” campaign against Kerry, which has been pretty much discredited (after the fact), and I’m pretty sure he was behind the “leaked” forged memo from the Air Texas National Guard which brought down Can Rather and made Bush’s poor record in military service to hot a topic to touch.

The extent of Rove’s involvement in this election are unclear. He’s been raising PAC money to put out ads which probably won’t air until October, at the earlist. In the meantime, he’s trained thousands of Republican operatives in his methods, both in his firm and among Republican campaign consultants all across the country.

Check out all the times here in Washington State where Republican candidates have “reserved” portions of public parks for campaign events, and excluded everyone who is not invited (particularly the media). They’ve even gone so far as to threaten people videotaping from public sidewalks well outside of the reserved areas!

And then there’s the entire town that was seized by Republican “trustess” this past year because tax collections didn’t meet the budget (after Republicans cut off the tax base), and then turned over the public beachfront park to a private corporation for development!

Heck, I remember back in the early 1970’s when Billy Graham held a revival at the Univ. of Tennessee stadium and brought in Richard Nixon as an honored guest. It was election season, of course. People complained that there was no compensation paid for the rental of the facilities, and the State Supreme Court agreed, but nothing ever came of it as far as I know.

Of course, putting down a soap-box and speaking on public issues in the public square (or parks) is pretty much a sanctified first-amendment right. Exclusions of others is problematic, but necessary to some extent with both candidates due to security concerns. The dinner probably pushes the limits, but I’ll bet if you look into it further you will see that this particular public park probably rents out portions of the park for private events all the time, in order to raise enough money to fund their operations.

    # 57: Okay, give me specifics.

I’m going completely by memory here, but it took a long time for Romney to break above 20%. By the time most of his opposition had dropped out, he was left facing Newt Gingrich, who didn’t have a fat chance of ever getting the nomination (the party leadership would have ensured that). Heck, if Gingrich hadn’t been bought and paid for by the Los Vegas mogul, he would have been forced to drop out at least a couple months earlier than he did.

The fact is, that most Republicans preferred anybody else other than Romney, but Romney had the cash and organization to keep going long enough to win.

I’ve sat down with some pretty ardent Republicans who hate the President and really, really want to vote him out of office, but are unwilling to commit to voting for Romney. They are still hoping for a miracle at the convention, or a credible third-party candidate they can vote for. A number of Evangelical Christians are not comfortable with his Mormanism, but a large number don’t feel he represents them, economically. They don’t like the President’s policies, but they don’t feel that Romney can empathise with their concerns, either.

They want to appeal to their racist viewers who prefer cute, white, blonde teenage girls to ogle, rather than a real athlete who happens to be African American.

    http://www.foxnews.com/politic.....reference/

MY recollection is that the early knock on Romney is that he was stuck more or less around 25% and couldn’t break above that.

    True, but…….

At one point in the 1992 campaign, Bill Clinton was polling at 2%. We know how that turned out.

While you’re busy telling yourself how likable Obama is and how creepy and weird Willard is, maybe keep this in mind (also from the link above):

Winning matters more than issues. By a wide 20-percentage point margin, GOP primary voters are more likely to say it’s “very important” their nominee can beat Obama (73 percent) than to say it’s “very important” for the nominee to share their views (53 percent).
Even so, if forced to pick, most Republican voters would rather see the economy turn around (80 percent) than be guaranteed their favorite candidate would win in 2012 (14 percent).
That’s similar to how voters overall feel. By a 5-to-1 margin, most voters would prefer economic growth (77 percent) over their candidate’s victory (15 percent).

It’s the economy. It’s the economy and nothing else. It’s why the Dems are so desperately trying to make it about magic underwear, dressage, and tax returns.

Let’s talk about the Republicans who’s admitted main goal was not to get Americans employed, but to get Obama out of office. From there, we can talk about Republican’s intentional sabatoge of recovery plans by use of the Senate Veto/Hold (2009-10) and the House refusal to act (2011-12).

Let’s talk about mostly Republican opposition to assistance to the American car companies in 2009, with Romney saying they should all be allowed to collapse (leaving millions more out of work).

Let’s talk about the deficit run up by George W. Bush for the tax cuts which led to no new hiring, and the Iraq war, with profligate spending in both Iraq and Afganistan to big contractors with political connections and lots of missing money (typical Republican mis-management?).

While we are at it, let’s talk about the Tarp I, where the Republicans dared the Democrats to vote against it on pain of another Great Depression, only to switch their votes against it after it was assured of passage, just so they could use it as a campaign issue.

And let’s talk about the Bush administration’s “there’s no time for details, trust us” open-handed authority under Tarp I, then simply shoveling the money out to favored Wall Street brokerage firms with no accountability.

Let’s talk about the money wasted by the House Republicans in yet another of their votes (what is it 33 so far?) to repeal the Affordable Care Act.

Let’s talk about how the Republicans’ only “jobs” plan is to shovel more money in the direction of the uber rich through more tax cuts, without any requirement that they actually hire a single American worker. That, and lifting of environmental regulations so that workers and their communities could find themselves back in a 1960’s could of emissions and lake and rivers which spontaneously combusted.

Oh, and let’s talk about 22 months straight of job growth under the Obama administration. They say it’s not enough, but it’s a lot better than during either of the previous two Republican administrations.

Nah, they don’t want to to talk about they’ll do, and what good for America might come from a Romney presidency. No plan. No details. No tax returns. Nothing. Better to prattle on about how the president’s kid “looks like a man” and accusing the president of being some kind of uppity Kenyan commie-jihadist who is gonna take everybody’s guns away while imposing Sharia’ Law.

Soon, the Obama campaign should be issuing a daily press release, entitled “This Day in History”, which details the headlines of the Bush administration’s economic collapse during the summer and fall of 2008. Just to make sure everyone remembers. They should follow it up with a Democratic Congressperson each day holding a press conference where they discuss the events and their own experiences, and the recovery which has come under the Obama administration.

Be sure to include some photos of Sen. John McCain looking befuddled as he his hustled into a meeting on the issues for a photo-op.

The most terrifying danger Americans face from a second Barack Obama term isn’t the economy, which is scary enough.
The most harrowing prospect is the Obama Administration’s passivity in the face of attempts to introduce aspects of sharia law into our legal system. Now there is strong and open evidence of the Obama administration collaborating with Islamist activists to ensure the path toward sharia law is accelerated.
Just last week, Thomas Perez, Assistant Attorney General of the Department of Justice (DOJ) Civil Rights Division, was asked this question by Trent Franks (R-AZ), a member of the House Judiciary Committee Subcommittee on the Constitution: “Will you tell us here today that this Administration’s Department of Justice will never entertain or advance a proposal that criminalizes speech against any religion?”

Well, yeah…but not necessarily the kind we’d like to have. For a long time, from what I remembered from a couple classes I took in marine biology, I figured that if the oceans accumulated a little extra carbonic acid, we’d see some algal blooms that would slurp it all up. That, indeed, has been happening, but many if not most of the varieties of algae are really nasty stuff. There are places where hundreds of square miles of ocean have been overrun with toxic glop that kills every other known life form before it dies off itself. Similarly, on land where in other circumstances there might be growth of stable conifer forests we may get fast-growing alder, cottonwood, Scotch broom (ah-CHOO!) and tall grass that dry out and become tinder in the summer.

So here we see yet again the hoary rightwing myth that federal spending is weighed down by lazy bums who live the good life on welfare.

Never mind that welfare was never, even in its heyday, more than 3% of the federal budget. And that nearly all welfare recipients were children living with one parent. After all, there’s a reason why they called it “Aid For Dependent Children” (AFDC) and then “Temporary Aid for Needy Families” (TANF). And an awful lot of those children were on AFDC/TANF because their dads were deadbeats who wouldn’t pay child support unless threatened with jail. Like a certain GOP congress critter from Illinois named Joe Walsh, who owes his kids more than $100,000 in unpaid child support.

Yeah, just keep playing that fiddle, righties. And after you cut welfare to nothing, after you’ve kicked the last starving welfare mom and her kids to the curb, who will you blame your deficits on then?

Surely not corporate welfare. Surely not tax cuts for billionaires and millionaires. Surely not runaway defense spend and trillion-dollar recreational wars.

My guess is after they’ve run out of other scapegoats for their fiscal profligacy they’ll go after veterans. But they’ll never, ever touch their special fiscal and tax privileges for the rich and powerful. Preserving those is what they live for.

And he’s done so by boldly slapping Mittens in a way the he can’t effectively his back. Mitt accuses him of baselessly speculating about Mitt’s taxes, but that’s exactly what Mitt’s doing – asking the American people to speculate about his taxes in the absence of any actual facts, which he refuses to provide.

So like what happened in Wisconsin where the libtards in the media were saying Scott Walker was in trouble based on their biased polling, when he won by 7%, this could be happening again. This is why:

    http://news.yahoo.com/santorum.....54008.html

Picking Paul looks like a particularly elegant solution to what might have been a thorny problem. Ron Paul’s campaign didn’t gain traction with voters, but his supporters understood party rules better than other campaigns, giving them the opportunity to win delegate seats at county and state party conventions. Had Paul won a majority of just one more delegation, he would have been allowed to be formally nominated for president, which could have been a hurdle for organizers trying to arrange an event that will serve as a Romney coronation.

Republicans Blasted Obama Administration For Warning About Right-Wing Domestic Terrorism

By Annie-Rose Strasser on Aug 7, 2012 at 10:25 am

The gunman in the shooting at a Sikh temple over the weekend has been labeled a potential domestic terrorist — defined as one who incites politically-motivated violence against his or her own country. In Wade Michael Page’s case, that political motivation was likely white supremacy, a growing problem in the United States.

But when, in 2009, the Department of Homeland Security reported that white supremacy is the US’s biggest threat for domestic terror, it was met with harsh criticism. Conservatives blasted the department for defining terror threats too broadly, instead of focusing on potential Islamic terrorists. Then-House Minority Leader Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) was one of those who berated DHS, saying that they weren’t focusing on the real threats the US faces:

    The puddywhippedpussy’s heroes in action.

Frist (R-Tenn.), appearing on three network TV shows, agreed with this week’s autopsy conclusion that the Florida woman had suffered severe, irreversible brain damage. “I never, never, on the floor of the Senate, made a diagnosis, nor would I ever do that,” he told NBC’s “Today” show.

As it turns out, Tucker made no pretense about being a journalist when he first announced the Daily Caller. It was no surprise that the first edition featured gay-bashing, rape jokes, mockery of leading Democrats and opinion pieces by Republican Congressmen. In 2009, he declared his goal was a news site “along the lines of The Huffington Post” with an ideology “not in sync with the current program.” And as Kurtz noted:

When he announced the Daily Caller last spring, Carlson was more explicit about its ideology, telling Human Events the site would be “opposed to what’s going on” under President Obama — “a radical increase in federal power… a version of socialism.”

But as his coverage of the Valerie Plame affair showed, Tucker Carlson’s past is a guarantee of future performance.
The scandal surrounding the outing of the covert CIA operative and the subsequent conviction of Cheney chief-of-staff Scooter Libby provides case in point. Few voices on television were more strident in Libby’s defense than Tucker Carlson. But throughout, he remained silent on his father’s leadership of the Scooter Libby Legal Defense Fund.

From the beginning, Tucker Carlson aimed both barrels at Libby prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald. In November 2005, he insisted Fitzgerald was “accusing Libby – falsely and in public – of undermining this country’s security,” adding, “Fitzgerald should apologize, though of course he never will.” Reversing his past position in support of independent counsels, Carlson in February 2007 blasted “this lunatic Fitzgerald, running around destroying people’s lives for no good reason.”

    Yeah. Right.

White supremacists react to Sikh massacre

    By Ryan Lenz

Message boards and forums across the racist radical right have erupted in the days following Wade Michael Page’s deadly rampage at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin, with some racists calling the skinhead gunman “brother,” commending his actions on behalf of the white man and excoriating those who have tried to distance themselves from the racist cause.

“Take your dead and go back to India and dump their ashes in the Ganges, Sikhs,” wrote Alex Linder, the foul-mouthed neo-Nazi who operates the racist website Vanguard News Network (VNN), on his forum. “You don’t belong here in the country my ancestors fought to found, and deeded to me and mine, their posterity. Even if you came here legally, and even if you haven’t done anything wrong personally. Go home, Sikhs. Go home to India where you belong. This is not your country, it belongs to white men.”

Is It True Romney Paid No Taxes For 10 Years?

When this story first broke, it semed as though Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) was floating unsubstantiated gossip or rumors. But this story is gaining traction as it becomes clear he actually had information from a knowledgeable source:

“‘Harry Reid made a statement that is true. Somebody told him. It is a fact,’ House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) told the Huffington Post on Monday in support of Reid. …

“‘I don’t know who Harry Reid’s source was, but I do know that this is a question that has swirled around Mitt Romney for this entire campaign,’ Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said Sunday on ABC …. ‘I do know that he could clear it up just like that, lickety-split, by releasing his tax returns.'”

    http://firstread.nbcnews.com/_.....claim?lite

Roger Rabbit Commentary: I’m not saying R-Money has an obligation to release his tax returns. I’m simply saying everyone else since Reagan has, and if he doesn’t, people will assume the worst. It’s kinda stupid to keep holding out, because people will use their imaginations to fill in the blanks, and what imagination produces usually is worse than reality. But so stubborn is R-Money about this, you gotta wonder …

    The Job Creator Debate

This article from CNBC, which is usually investor-friendly, says Romney and Obama are both right about where jobs come from. And that’s more or less where I am with this issue.

    http://www.cnbc.com/id/48546245

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Of course taxes and regulation burden businesses; but that’s like saying stop lights and speed limits slow traffic.

We have consumer protection laws because consumers need protecting from predatory business practices. We need bank regulation because greedy and dishonest bankers will destroy the banking system if they’re left unsupervised.

Businesses, especially those in the finance sector, habitually behave like toddlers. You don’t leave daycares unsupervised. At least, the responsible adults — us pro-regulation liberals — won’t. Conservatives? They’re the todders who need supervising, so who cares what they think.

We have all these regulations and agencies for good reasons. All of them sprung up from the ashes of past abuses and disasters. Over the years, many smart people have given much thought to balancing the need for regulation with the burdens and restraints it puts on businesses. You probably can find isolated examples of regulations that went too far, were unnecessary, or overly burdensome. But that doesn’t invalidate the broad idea that traffic systems don’t work without traffic rules and traffic cops.

Our regulatory system isn’t perfect and could withstand constructive tweaking. But the conservatives’ idea of doing away with it altogether defies common sense. And policing business so our economy isn’t taken over and run by people with a criminal mentality won’t keep legitimate entrepreneurs from creating jobs.

My ass spends most of its time interfacing with a comfy chair in front of a computer screen on which I watch my stocks go up — about $2500 today.

A stock I bought last week for $37 is $44 today; so much for the idea that markets are rational, professional traders know what they’re doing, and small investors don’t have a chance.

I did absolutely nothing to earn that $7 per share profit. I didn’t invent a new product, I didn’t create a single job, I didn’t do a fucking thing except guess that “the smartest guys in the room” were selling their shares of that stock at too low a price. All this does is take money out of their pocket and put it in my pocket — it’s a zero-sum game from which nobody else derives any benefit whatsoever.

I vote for the most progressive candidates on the ballot, but anyone who calls me a “socialist” is out of his/her fucking mind; I’m as capitalist as they come. Skimming off the top, like all the rich capitalists do, sure beats fighting commuter traffic, putting up with abusive bosses, and working Republican wages. Anytime I can make more than $300 an hour for sitting on my fat rabbit ass, I’ll take it!
