– I don’t know if it’ll come together, but I’m working on something about King County punting on Metro.

– Rachel Beckwith’s story has been discussed in the comments already, but for those who missed it.

– I haven’t said anything about Norway because what I don’t know what I could possibly add. But David Futrelle and William Saletan (h/t) explore the narratives that surrounded him online. Neil Sinhababu notes who might be happy about the whole thing. And Glenn Beck can still go fuck himself (h/t).

– Figgins’ line is “.182/.236/.240 on the season. Each of those numbers feels dramatically worse than the last.”

– What scandal?

The Tea Party advocates within the Republican Party and in Congress claim to represent the ideals of the Founding Fathers. But some are actually encouraging a default: some say it would be a way to push the “re-boot” button on the American economy, others merely hope to use it as a campaign tactic against the president.

So it is a bit ironic that in the book I happened to be reading before work this morning, I came across a discussion of the problems of the budget and financing the Revolutionary War. In 1777 the rapidly depreciating “Continental” paper currency was causing huge price increases, and the Congress resolved that it could no longer continue issue paper money (basically, on “credit”), and instead use taxes to raise the needed money to fund the war. But since Congress had no power to impose a tax itself, it was compelled to ask each of the states to do it for them, and to remit the money to Congress so it could pay it’s bills.

In a resolution issued to each of the states in 1777, the Congress stated:

“A bankrupt faithless republic would be a novelty to the political world, and appear among reputable nations like a common prostitute among chaste and respectable matrons….The pride of America revolts from the idea, her citizens know for what purposes these emissions were made, and have repeatedly plighted their faith for the redemption of them… knowing the value of national character, and impressed with a dues sense of the immutable laws of justice and honor, it is impossible that America should think without horror of such an execrable deed”.

Source: Rappleye, Charles, “Robert Morris: Financier of the American Revolution”, Simon & Shuster, N.Y., 2010, page 190.

It seems that once again, the Tea Party folks only take what lessons they want to learn from the actual Founding Fathers, and ignore those which are inconvenient for them to remember.

In case you didn’t see it, the comments which have been frequently quoted here, and in many places elsewhere, were:

“The camp “sounds a little like the Hitler Youth or whatever,” Beck said. “Who does a camp for kids that’s all about politics? Disturbing.”

Glenn Beck says Norway camp like ‘Hitler Youth’

    So what say you?

I know that if the positions were reversed (a liberal gunman attacked a youth camp sponsored by the Republican Party, and anybody other than Fox News made such a comment, you would be outraged and calling for his head. Why the silence here?

Oh, and despite Beck’s feigned incredulity, it seems Beck has himself sponsored political youth camps under the guise of “teaching young people about their heritage and the Constitution” (as he interprets it).

    Christian Terrorism
If Muslims are responsible for Islamic terrorism, are Muslim-bashers responsible for the massacre in Norway?

On Friday, anti-Islamist blogger Pamela Geller pounced on news of a massacre in Oslo. “Jihad in Norway?” she asked. She posted a second item—”You cannot avoid the consequences of ignoring jihad”—and linked to a previous one: “Norway: ALL Rapes in Past 5 Years Committed by Muslims.” As the Oslo body count grew, she piled on: “if I hear another television or radio reporter refer to muhammad as ‘the Prophet Muhammad,’ I think I am going to puke. He’s not your prophet, assclowns.”

Then things went horribly wrong. It turned out that the suspected terrorist in Norway wasn’t a Muslim. He hated Muslims. And he admired Geller.

In another of today’s history lessons, let’s look at 1940-41, when Republicans in Congress blocked proposals to fund the new Philipine Army for over two years. Republicans insisted that the territory should pay for it’s own defense. The logjam was only broken when a “sugar tax” was imposed on imports of sugar cane and by-products from the Philipines, with the funds to be used to pay for the Philipine Army. This was, if my memory serves me correct, about August of 1941.

So Gen. MacArthur, who held the dual role of head of U.S. forces in the Philipines and head of the Philipine Army, quickly put together a plan to train the initial core of an army in three groups, with the first to report in November, 1941, after their training camp was established. Those who reported barely had enough time to get organized into units, learn the basics of drill, and issued uniforms before the war began on Dec. 8, 1941 (Philipine time).

Despite being poorly armed and having received only two or three weeks of training, they still fought bravely with the American forces against the Japanese attack, and upon the surrender at Bataan actually suffered worse at the hands of the Japanese victors than did the U.S. forces (which was brutal in and of itself).

So here we have yet one more example of how Republican tax and spending policies are an example of being penny-wise and pound-foolish. They have yet, to this day, failed to accept their share of the responsibility for the fate of the Philipines in WWII, instead trying to float conspiracy theories blaming F.D.R. with for-knowledge of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

In 1915, a new klan (KKK) was started in Stone Mountain, Georgia, by William Simmons, a Methodist minister who had taken inspiration from the favorable portrayal of the klan in D.W. Griffith’s epic film, The Birth of a Nation. Emphasizing costumes, rallies and secret rituals, the klan grew rapidly in the South. The initial targets were blacks, whom many whites felt had been warped by wartime experiences. Black workers on the home front had earned respectable wages and expected the same after the war, and black veterans, who had witnessed a racially tolerant society in France, longed for a more accepting America. Perturbed whites believed the blacks had to be put back in their place.

The appeal of the klan spread to the North and West, and at its peak in the mid-1920s achieved a total membership of four million or more. Members served in state legislatures and Congress, and were elected to the governorship in several states. Indiana, Oklahoma, Texas and Oregon saw significant klan influence.

The central klan offices marketed regalia and literature to local units, but agendas were molded by community conditions and concerns. Blacks were the subject of klan activity in both the North and South, as were Jews, Catholics and immigrants. The klan also organized to oppose the teaching of evolution in the schools, dissemination of birth control devices and information, and efforts to repeal prohibition.

The KKK of the 1920’s sounds a lot like the Teahadist dominated Rethug party today. New target, same old hatred.

    • Divide group in half. One half ‘earns’ Tootsie Rolls by doing 25 jumping jacks
    • The other half is not required to do jumping jacks, but can relax or do what they want
    • Teacher suggests that it’s “not fair” that one group has no Tootsie Rolls, then instructs
‘jumping jack’ group to give half of their Tootsie Rolls to the other group to even things
up – kids immediately understand that principles behind redistribution of wealth are NOT
    fair
    • Emphasize that America guarantees equal opportunity, not equal results
    • Emphasize that it is our own individual responsibility to be charitable, not the
government’s job to redistribute our wealth, or take our money to give to others

And quite frankly, I don’t even know what he is talking about, or what it is he’s asking me to do.

But I’ve tired of playing this game. Puddy’s had multiple opportunities to denounce Beck, and after almost two days of silence (at least on this issue), he first tries to deflect, and then he tries to change the subject, then he tries to condition his denial on me first jumping through whatever hoops he can think of to put in front of me.

Apparantly he thinks that what Beck said isn’t bad, despite the outrage his comments are creating from our fellow NATO allies of Norway and Great Britain, among others.

It’s pretty similar to current GOP tactics over the debt ceiling. Every President and Congress since the early 20th century has routinely approved debt limit increases to allow for payment of previously incurred obligations. Only the current GOP-controlled House hasn’t done what it knows it should do, and instead is trying to put the country’s economy at risk by playing a game of chicken and demanding a political ransom in exchange for doing what they are morally required to do in the first place.

So Rachel’s being sued for telling the truth?

He once made a statement on the radio criticizing his fellow Christians for not taking a stronger stand about the “gay” rights lobby promoting homosexuality in schools. According to the ministry announcement, he made a strong reference to Muslims taking the issue more seriously than Christians, referring to Islamic law, but did not condone their practices. It was Bradlee’s intent to focus attention on the issue, not to advocate harm to anyone, the statement said.

Despite the clear statement by Dean on his ministry’s website and elsewhere that he was not calling for the execution of homosexuals, according to the announcement, “MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow and others seized on and accused Dean on her show of supporting the killing of homosexuals, as is the practice in some radical Islamic countries. This seriously has harmed Dean and the ministry, who pride themselves on respect and love for all people.”

    But what did Bradley say?

Last year, he even had kind words for the way Islam deals with a group he abhors even more—homosexuals. “Muslims are calling for the executions of homosexuals in America,” he said on his radio show, The Sons of Liberty . “It shows you they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God, but they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do, because these people are livid about enforcing their laws. They know homosexuality is an abomination ”
    http://www.thedailybeast.com/a.....proar.html

    He said
Muslims who kill gays are more moral than Christians
    Therefore,
Christians, be more moral, have to kill gays.

And that logic is NOT somehow supporting the killing of homosexuals?
How does that logic further “respect and love for all people”?

CEOs Call For Corporate Income Tax Overhaul

“The CEO of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and other major U.S. employers told Congress Wednesday they would be willing to give up tax breaks … in return for a steep drop in the … corporate tax rate. Companies … pay a much lower overall effective rate by exploiting tax breaks, … that in 2011 are costing the government about $102 billion in lost revenue.”

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43....._business/

Roger Rabbit Commentary: Let’s start this discussion with this fact: Corporate taxes, as a percentage of GDP, have dropped dramatically since the end of World War 2, from 6% in 1948 to 1% in 2009 — a sixfold decrease. Nominal corporate tax rates are pretty meaningless; two-thirds of U.S. corporations pay no corporate income tax at all. General Electric, for example.

    http://www.huffingtonpost.com/.....30361.html

Conservatives used to argue that taxing corporate income, and then making individuals pay income taxes on dividend income, was “double taxation,” i.e. the same income is being taxed twice. This argument has always been dubious, because it rests on the assumption that a corporate entity and its shareholders are one and the same — an idea that has been blown completely out of the water, not only by Citizens United, but also by a whole string of court decisions that have effectively deprived shareholders of any say in corporate governance. Until the notion of corporate personhood is abolished, this argument just won’t hold water.

But now, conservatives want to go even farther by replacing “double taxation” with “no taxation” — i.e., neither corporations nor shareholders would pay any tax. They also want to abolish capital gains and inheritance taxes, so that only wages would be taxed, and hourly workers would have to bear the entire burden of supporting the federal government — a greedy, dishonest, mean, immoral, and selfish idea if there ever was one.

This is not to say that corporate tax reform is a bad idea. The current corporate tax code sucks, simply because so few companies pay taxes under it, and individual taxpayers have had to make up the revenue losses from the steadily shrinking corporate tax take.

I more or less agree with the CEOs on coupling a lower nominal rate with aboliton of the loopholes that allow many companies to pay little or no corporate tax. Corporate tax reform shouldn’t be revenue-neutral, though; with corporate tax revenues near an all-time low, it’s time to shift some of the overall tax burden back onto corporations.

Let’s take a look at what would happen if corporate taxes were eliminated. Conservatives argue this would stimulate investment and job creation. This theory is pretty easy to test, because many corporations pay no taxes now, so all you have to do is ask yourself whether employment went up or down during that steep drop in the tax curve from 2007 – 2009. Or, if you like, you can look at the employment statistics for 1980 – 1983, when corporate tax revenues were in another period of steep decline.

Eliminating corporate taxes tomorrow probably wouldn’t create a single job. Why? Because companies already have more cash than they know how to spend. Jobs aren’t being created, but that’s because of lack of demand, not lack of capital. The corporate world is awash with idle capital. Much of that money is simply sitting in banks, but some of it is being used for acquisitions, stock buybacks, or dividend increases — because CEOs and directors can’t figure out ways to reinvest it in their own businesses.

No, you can’t eliminate corporate taxes — that’s a cockamamie idea. But let’s streamline corporate taxes. By all means, give all companies a lower rate — but make all companies pay taxes, and do away with special tax breaks that create economic distortions.

I’m sure you all know how economic distortions work. If you give Company A a tax subsidies for making more Widgets, but make Company B pay taxes on its profits from making Gadgets, you’re gonna end up with too many Widgets and not enough Gadgets, as sure as it rains in Seattle in winter.

One more thing: Talk of giving corporations a “tax holiday” on foreign profits is nonsense. With the federal government drowning in red ink, the last thing we need to do is give rich corporations a massive new tax break. According to MSNBC, “A prior tax holiday was later proven to have created few, if any, new jobs.” So there’s absolutely no rationale for doing it.

Roger @ 91: More to the point, corporations don’t need a tax break in order to hire more workers because corporate spending on workers isn’t taxed. It’s an expense, and therefore deductable.

Any corporation which is concerned that this year’s obscene profit accumulation will subject it to taxation only has to hire more workers and the problem is solved. At the same time, they can put those workers to work doing any number of things they have been putting off for years (or decades). Heck, maybe they might actually start making a product or two – that would be a change!

By the way, it looks like the first lawsuit on health insurance reform will make it to the Supreme Court this year. The challengers to the law who lost in an appeals court decision earlier this summer have asked the court to consider the appeal in it’s October session.

Health care lawsuit reaches Supreme Court

Although there is no guarantee the court will accept the case (it could refuse to issue the writ of certiori and allow the Court of Appeals ruling to stand), there is every reason to believe it will accept the case, in light of the differences in district court rulings on the issue.

So by next June, right in the middle of the presidential campaign season, the court might well issue an opinion which will put health care reform right into the middle of the election battle.

If I had the money, I would love to make a series of TV commercials which would run every day, between now and the next election. The subject would be “Why no one should ever vote for a Republican”. Each day, we would provide a different reason, with an example from the recent news.

We could get several commercials just by showing the faces of the Republican nominees to the Supreme Court, and recount the decisions they made which showed them to be tools of the GOP and big corporate interests. Then remind voters that the person who wins the 2012 election will also probably select at least one or two new Supreme Court justices.

The big surprise here is Sen. Darling, a big fish, is locked in such a tight race that GOP backers have been forced to pour at least $400,000 into her campaign.

In general, it looks like Democrats should easily win one of these races, have a good shot at three more, and all six are potentially winnable.

A week later, on Aug. 16, Democrats have to defend two senate seats against GOP-led recall efforts. One of those seats looks safe, the other one is contested but should be a Dem win. Four wins on Aug. 9 probably is enough to ensure the Dems will take control of the state senate.

    http://www.dailykos.com/story/.....via=blog_1

Meanwhile, Gov. Walker could be in real trouble when he faces a likely recall drive next year. The latest Badger Poll by the University of Wisconsin shows 37% of Wisconsin residents approve of the job he’s doing while 59% disapprove.

F-22 – Super Stealth, Super Fast, Super Costly

    By JAMES W. CRAWLEY
    Media General News Service

LANGLEY AIR FORCE BASE, Va. – The gold-tinted canopy closed and a wave of apprehension swept over Air Force pilot Wade Tolliver as he started the jet engines for his first flight in an F-22 Raptor.

“I was scared I’d scratch the jet,” Tolliver said.

The lieutenant colonel, a veteran of more than 2,000 hours in jets, had reason to worry. A mistake could be very costly. The plane he sat in cost $339 million.
    …
So far, the Air Force has 62 Raptors. Current plans call for a total of 183. Cost: about $63.2 billion, counting research and development, aircraft and construction of new facilities.

In the center of the hole was a late-model Rolls Royce moving along at about 5 mph below the speed limit. All the traffic behind it was also doing 5 mph under the limit. Nobody was passing. Nobody wanted to get anywhere near that Rolls, a fender scratch to which could cost your insurance company $7,500. And that Rolls was CHEAP compared to an F-22.

Full Disclosure: The super-expensive F-22 is built by Lockheed Martin. Roger Rabbit owns Lockheed Martin stock. With a pricetag of $339 million per plane, imagine what the profit margin is! But if the plane ain’t cheap, the stock is, you can buy a share of LMT for less than it cost five years ago — and the dividend has doubled since then! I ain’t stupid, when a company gets away with ripping off taxpayers like this company does, I gotta own it!!!

I expect we’ll see more triple-digit selloffs tomorrow and Friday, but the real fun will come next week! It doesn’t matter if the government actually defaults, this’ll work out fine if the GOPers simply scare the living shit out of investors. I’m not greedy, I’ll be happy with a 40% market drop. @90. Roger Rabbit spews:
Conservatives used to argue that taxing corporate income, and then making individuals pay income taxes on dividend income, was “double taxation,” i.e. the same income is being taxed twice. This argument has always been dubious, because it rests on the assumption that a corporate entity and its shareholders are one and the same — an idea that has been blown completely out of the water, not only by Citizens United, but also by a whole string of court decisions that have effectively deprived shareholders of any say in corporate governance. Until the notion of corporate personhood is abolished, this argument just won’t hold water.
    ——————————–
income is taxed at the corporate level and again when dividends are paid, why is this not double taxation.

    ——————————–
this is nonsense, in a recession corporate income and employment both go down because of a decline in economic activity

    ————————–
this is also nonsense, your argument amounts to the assertion that business decisions are made without consideration of tax effects. Apparently you haven’t been able to find any support for that argument even in the leftwing Brit economics website that you claim is pro-business.

    —————————
right, good to see your sensible side appear

One more thing: Talk of giving corporations a “tax holiday” on foreign profits is nonsense. With the federal government drowning in red ink, the last thing we need to do is give rich corporations a massive new tax break. According to MSNBC, “A prior tax holiday was later proven to have created few, if any, new jobs.” So there’s absolutely no rationale for doing it.
    ———————————-
That doesn’t make sense to me either, why foreign and not domestic, what “talk of giving corporations a “tax holiday” on foreign profits” do you refer to?

On June 12th 2011, I’m turning 9. I found out that millions of people don’t live to see their 5th birthday. And why? Because they didn’t have access to clean, safe water so I’m celebrating my birthday like never before. I’m asking from everyone I know to donate to my campaign instead of gifts for my birthday. Every penny of the money raised will go directly to fund freshwater projects in developing nations. Even better, every dollar is “proved” when the projects are complete, and photos and GPS coordinates are posted using Google Earth. My goal is to raise $300 by my birthday, June 12, 2011. Please consider helping me.

    Thank you so much!!!

I reckon little boys and girls all over the world offer similar small sacrifices like Rachel’s for some good cause such as this every day. Alas, not very many people hear their voices. Perhaps little Rachel had to die to be heard, but now that she is, she’s speaking to the world not only for them, but for the good in all of us.

    Tea Party Hobbits!

    http://www.latimes.com/news/na.....7765.story
Sen. John McCain on Wednesday took on conservatives reluctant to raise the national debt ceiling, calling them “tea party hobbits” and saying that if they reject the House Republican plan, they will help reelect President Obama.

At times reading from a Wall Street Journal editorial during his floor speech, the Arizona Republican also ridiculed Democrats, saying Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s plan is “full of smoke and mirrors.”

But he directed the most biting sarcasm at his own party.

The “hobbits” remark came from the Journal editorial, a reference to the little people of Middle-earth in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy.

McCain said conservatives’ insistence that an increase in the debt ceiling be accompanied by a balanced budget amendment was “worse than foolish” because it couldn’t get through the Senate.

Many U.S. corporations now derive a substantial part of their revenue and profits overseas. They’re reluctant to repatriate those foreign profits because doing so would subject them to U.S. taxes. The business lobby has been asking Congress for a “tax holiday” that would allow them to bring that money into the U.S. tax-free.

The Real Deal: Muslim Witness To Cain’s Mosque Visit Calls Sentiments Genuine

    Evan McMorris-Santoro | July 28, 2011, 5:50AM

The change of heart is a time-honored part of American political theater. As public sentiments (read: polling) change, politicians often find a way to alter their positions through seemingly heart-felt rhetoric. But there are rare occasions when the change of heart is real. And according to one of the Muslim community members Herman Cain visited with Wednesday, the Republicans newfound respect for Islam is completely genuine.

Debt Madness Was Always About Killing Social Security

    Posted on Jul 27, 2011

    By Robert Scheer

This phony debt crisis has now passed through the looking glass into the realm where madness reigns. What should have been an uneventful moment in which lawmakers make good on the nation’s contractual obligations has instead been seized upon by Republican hypocrites as a moment to settle ideological scores that have nothing to do with the debt.

Hypocrites, because their radical free market ideology, and the resulting total deregulation of the financial markets, is what caused the debt to spiral out of control this last decade. That and the wars George W. Bush launched but didn’t have the integrity to responsibly finance. The consequence was a banking bubble and crash leading to a 50 percent run-up of the debt that has nothing to do with the “entitlements” that those same Republicans have always wanted to destroy.

Yep. Let Granny and Grampy eat cat food.

    # 160: I think the GOP is split on Social Security. One-half wants to do away with it entirely, forcing people to work until they drop dead from old age, just on general principle. The other half don’t want to do away with it entirely – they are drooling at all the surpluses it accumulates (as savings toward the Baby-Bommer’s retirements), and trying to figure out how to get their hands on it through privitization.

  162. 162

    rhp6033 spews:

    Thursday, 7/28/11 at 9:00 am

Continuation of # 161: The key to deciphering the GOP strategy is to ignore what they are saying and concentrate on their actions. Their actions show that they are entirely within the control of the wealthiest financial interests in the world, and their goal is to take whatever the rest of us still have and convert it to our own use.

    Let’s review recent history:

    1. In year 2000, we have a balanced budget and are on track to pay off the ENTIRE FEDERAL DEBT before the end of the decade. Using the concept of OPM (using “other people’s money” to make investments), the Republican Party gives tax breaks to the wealthiest Americans, paid for entirely by federal debt owed by the American public at large. Since the rich are astute at avoiding taxes, and the poor don’t have any money with which to pay more in taxes, the bill is expected to be paid by future generations of the American middle class.

    2. Now their eyes focused on a growing source of wealth and security of the American people: the equity in their homes. The 2005-2007 housing bubble, along with complete cooperation by the Republican Congress and the White House and the various regulatory agencies under it’s control, accomplished two things in one fell swoop: it encouraged homeowners to re-finance (and take more money out against the equity for other spending), and giving wall street and brokerage firms obscene profits on “finders fees”, real-estate backed mortgage securities, etc. When the house of cards collapsed, and American homeowners found themselves owing far more on their houses than they were worth, they approached Congress with an ultimatum: “Give us a trillion dollars in bail-out funds, with no strings attached, or you will face another Great Depression. Oh, and you have 48 hours to make up your mind”. Congress relented, the TARP bailout was made under the Bush administration, and Republicans immediately began working to try to pass the blame on the Democrats.

    3. In 2005 Bush offered his Social Security privitazation plan, which met with a resounding thud among the American people. IN 2011 Paul proposed a similar plan: give all the social security trust funds to wall street and give vouchers to seniors for them to try to shop for insurance on the open market. Paul’s plan also met with a resounding thud, so the “crisis” created by the Republicans in refusing to pay America’s debts, already incurred, in just the sort of excuse they look for in trying to do something which would otherwise be political suicide.

Why would the Republicans want to kill Social Security? It’s not contributing to the deficit or the national debt by one thin dime, it’s currently running surpluses which are going toward paying off other debt incurred under the Bush administration. You would think, if debt and deficits were a bad thing, Republicans would LOVE Social Security. But the fact that they can’t wait to get their greedy little paws on all that money.

They want it to be dispersed in individual accounts which Wall Street firms will offer to manage (for an annual fee, plus transaction fees, plus statement fees, plus a percentage of the total funds managed fee, plus fees to access the money or call your broker, etc.). In return for such a windfall, helpful Republican Congressmen can expect to receive (in the future) very profitable positions on corporate boards, do-little executive positions with big stock options and bonuses, etc.

When the debt tsunami hit, I was sitting pretty, and profited from the stock market crash brought on by the credit market crash. Tax breaks for the job creators?

By this time should we not know which corporations have been creating jobs? Should they not prove they have created jobs. Good jobs?

Take Walmart as an example. Basically the only jobs Walmart has created in their stores are low paying part time jobs. They drive other retailers out of business by using unfair business practices, businesses that use to pay decent wages. They have forced their suppliers to relocate their manufacturing outside the country costing our country even more good paying jobs.

So why should Walmart get any kind of tax breaks?

Walsh’s ex-wife Laura Walsh asked a judge to suspend Walsh’s driver’s license until he paid his child support, the newspaper reports. In response, Walsh asks his ex-wife’s lawyer: “Have you no decency?”

    Regarding illegals in this country…

Many years ago we had a few illegals around. Not many, though. You see, if an employer got caught hiring illegals, well he went to jail and had to pay fines. Not many employers wanted to risk that.

Then we got a new President by the name of Reagan. He changed the law. Then it was OK for employers to hire illegals. But not for the illegals to be hired. And all of a sudden, there was an ever expanding number of illegals flooding into this country willing to work for shit wages.

Of course now, if you changed the law back to pre-Reagan, you’d get a lot of screaming from said employers because they can’t hire any Americans for shit wages.

AGUA NEGRA, Mexico — The extraordinary Mexican migration that delivered millions of illegal immigrants to the United States over the past 30 years has sputtered to a trickle, and research points to a surprising cause: unheralded changes in Mexico that have made staying home more attractive.

A growing body of evidence suggests that a mix of developments — expanding economic and educational opportunities, rising border crime and shrinking families — are suppressing illegal traffic as much as economic slowdowns or immigrant crackdowns in the United States.

Here in the red-earth highlands of Jalisco, one of Mexico’s top three states for emigration over the past century, a new dynamic has emerged. For a typical rural family like the Orozcos, heading to El Norte without papers is no longer an inevitable rite of passage. Instead, their homes are filling up with returning relatives; older brothers who once crossed illegally are awaiting visas; and the youngest Orozcos are staying put.

“I’m not going to go to the States because I’m more concerned with my studies,” said Angel Orozco, 18. Indeed, at the new technological institute where he is earning a degree in industrial engineering, all the students in a recent class said they were better educated than their parents — and that they planned to stay in Mexico rather than go to the United States.

The following editorial appeared Friday in The Dallas Morning News:

The vast majority of illegal immigrants in the U.S. come from Mexico. That shouldn’t surprise anyone. A big surprise is that Mexican migration appears to have fallen to a trickle because of several factors, not the least of which is an improving job market south of the border.

Exhaustive academic research suggests multiple, overlapping circumstances are affecting the migration decline, creating a perfect storm of good news for both sides of the border.

Yes, a growing anti-illegal immigrant sentiment across the U.S. is one ingredient, but this is no cause for hardliners to claim victory. Bigger, yet subtler, economic and social forces are at play, some of them years in the making.

A major factor is the drooping U.S. economy, which continues to take a heavy toll on immigrants as U.S. employers come under increasing federal pressure to stop hiring anyone who can’t prove legal work status. If migrants can’t find jobs, the higher expense of life in America cancels out any meager economic benefit from being here.

All of the sudden, life in Mexico is looking a lot better.

At the same time, Mexico’s economy is taking off, having reached a 5.5 percent growth rate last year according to The New York Times. Job growth is particularly strong in the manufacturing and export sector along the U.S. border. Even in violence-plagued Ciudad Juarez, job growth rivals that of the healthiest U.S. cities. An 8.2 percent increase in Mexican manufacturing jobs appears to be providing much of the incentive for workers to stay in their own country, rather than migrate north.

Here’s the prayer. It’s more stupid than offensive.

I’d never heard of Bradly Dean before. He’s a real piece of work. People who believe that deeply in false narratives and look to the past to rationalize the use of violence can be some scary folks.

Essentially, he gave a highly controversial political speech disguised as a prayer. Shut down the House until the Rs figured out how to get out of the mess Dean created for them.

    Mr. Dean sayz:

Muslims are calling for the executions of homosexuals in America. This just shows you they themselves are upholding the laws that are even in the Bible of the Judeo-Christian God, but they seem to be more moral than even the American Christians do, because these people are livid about enforcing their laws

Mr. Dean, it would seem, is unaware that the Muslim faith is one of three branches of Abrahamic Faith, the other two being Judaism & Christianity of course.

    ———————————-
Good point, yet another Obama promise kept. He solved the illegal immigration problem by ruining our economy to the point that the Mexican economy does far better than the American.

    @182. Roger Rabbit spews:

@175 So now our newest troll is blaming the debt crisis on immigrants? That figures! Hey, if you’re mad about the national debt, throw all the Republicans out of the country and let the Mexicans stay! Here’s where the debt actually came from:

    http://investmentwatchblog.com.....come-from/

Yep, that’s right, Wingnut Whack-O-Nomics caused nearly all of it!
    ——————————————
Another good point, what about that Obama promise to cut the debt in half? Put your glasses on and look for the largest spike in debt since WWII; that would be right after Obama and the Dims came to power.

    @181. Roger Rabbit spews:
… looks like Boner doesn’t have the votes from his own caucus to pass this turkey … so the Senate won’t have to shoot it down after all.

The Yakima County “Rethug producers” alone are sucking over $400,000,000 a year from the state’s teat.

    @154. Roger Rabbit spews:
Many U.S. corporations now derive a substantial part of their revenue and profits overseas. They’re reluctant to repatriate those foreign profits because doing so would subject them to U.S. taxes. The business lobby has been asking Congress for a “tax holiday” that would allow them to bring that money into the U.S. tax-free.
    ——————————————-
Thanks, I do remember hearing of that now and it makes more sense.

Not so, oh shit for brains. The illegals would not be there if your “Rethug producers” did not hire them.

And all the Rethug counties in the state, except for one, suck at the state’s teat, and the one that doesn’t, only contributes a small cash flow to the state. They are a nothing but a bunch of fucking Welfare Queens who bitch about their taxes being too high.

    @201
The really bad part about the welfare queens in Yakima county is that all that state and federal money distorts the markets. It makes it harder for farmers, who don’t have all those connections and get all those subsides* to farm, it makes it harder to keep land closer to population centers in production and leads to the building of ticky-tacky subdivisions on farm land and so on.

*Most of the subsides are gobbled up by a small group of farmers.

The House vote is still on hold. The Boner has got to be feeling very limp right now. His hobbits are in revolt and the DJ is going down. And the best the Rethugs can spin it is that this is the fault of the Senate Dems. If it wasn’t so sad it would be funny.

Oh, what is a Boner to do?

Lawrence O’Donnell spelled out one answer. The Boner could work a deal with the House Dems. You know, a compromise bill a majority from both sides could agree on. Then all the Boner would need is maybe 50 of his saner (non hobbit) Rethugs to vote for it and the Dems could round up the rest of the needed votes.

Raising the debt limit means we can pay our bills. Bills congress has already authorized ans the US is committed to paying. It does not authorize new spending.
