The entire public rationale for going to war in Iraq was based on that one mans testimony in Congress. The propaganda was almost word-for-word.
Are you really saying that this man, a four star General, had no access whatsoever to the non-official but verifiable sources of cross intelligence? That he was so ignorant, so willfully blase’ about such information that he willfully disregarded it in favor of the lobbying and propaganda efforts in support of a War by the largest military contractors? A four star General is a political position more than anything else. One does not get to such a position in any military organization anywhere in the world without becoming an expert on the political workings of such an organization. One does not ignore the realities of one intelligence resource in favor of another except to create a specific political outcome, be it right or wrong, for good or bad.
Colin Powell resigned his commission rather than continue to support the Bush AD-ministration in its continued and ongoing efforts to expand the American Corporate Empire, and he refused to publically denounce them, knowing full well that any attempt by himself to “come clean” on the subject would very likely end up with him wearing a pair of cement shoes, or tragically dying in a plane crash while on some Heroic Mission To Serve the American People™. Not to mention destroying any domestic credibility he himself had, career notwithstanding.
He knew, he knew damn well, as he sat in that chair in front of the UN Security Council, that he was telling a lie, and he knew damn well that the lie only served the purpose of the companies like Halliburton, Bechtel, General Electric and such to extract a lot of money from the US Treasury. The ONLY purpose of such a lie was political and economic, not military. Much of that money went right back into the Politicians pockets in the form of campaign contributions, stock tips and discounts. Much of what went right back into the third-party lobbying and issue-based advertising in support of a War. It could just have easily been Venezuela or Syria or Iran.
And yet, you brownshirts complain about Trade Unionists supporting candidates for political office.
The drumbeat for War still goes on, and the propaganda is bought and paid for by the companies that would benefit from such a war. Not the American people, or any real concern for the security of the nation. Those are not even considerations. It is solely about making money. Extracting as much cash out of the US Treasury as possible, without any civilian ever being the wiser. The Stock Market comes first, in all things. Even if half the people have to go hungry and homeless to support it. Even if we have to butcher a million people in some foreign land. There has never been a war, ever in human history, that has occurred without the most influential political body buying off the richest people in the Nation, ever. The inverse of that is also true.
Colin Powell fully supported that notion, and gave his best performance as a top General Officer that day as he testified to the United Nations.

Over the past two years, a lot of people have wondered how the Republicans were going to survive considering the obvious inconsistency between their words and their actions. By 2005 it was apparant that their words and their actions didn’t match regarding the Katrina response. About the same time it was clear that their words and their actions didn’t match concerning Iraq. And by the summer of 2008, it was clear that their words and their actions didn’t match concerning the economy. And in the fall of 2008, it was clear that their basic financial ideology didn’t match their actions once their financial interests were in danger.
The problem is, those of us who expect a political party to have ideological consistency. But the Republicans abandoned ideological consistency a very long time ago – about the time of Goldwater’s defeat. Republicans then adopted a policy of taking care of the ultra rich, and relying upon the ultra rich to take care of them (via political donations, etc.). Everything else was mere cover story to be fed to the multitudes.
When Bush & Co. showed that their primary goal was to give federal money to the financial movers and shakers in the form of an unrestricted and uncontrolled TARP bailout, everyone saw that the emporer wore no clothes. But after picking themselves up from the floor after their shellacking in the 2008 elections, they decided to declare Bush to not be a “real Republican”, and tried to distance themselves from him – and then go back to business as usual.

Of course, part of going “back to business as usual” is attempting to delay the economic recover by obstructing every bill in Congress through Senate filibuster. It’s not that they really objected to the bills so much, they just wanted Americans to suffer from continued hardship so the Republicans could blame it on Obama. Which they promptly did in 2010, claiming that “jobs” were the real issue, and enough Democrats stayed home in that election to let the Republicans take back control of the House.
At which point, of course, the Republicans abandoned all attempts to do anything about jobs, and has concentrated on slashing NPR funding, hiring IRS agents to audit people to see how they paid for abortions, etc.

This one caught the Republicans by surprise. What position do they take? Do they support the dictator’s regimes in the hopes of maintaining stability and low oil prices? Or do they support freedom and democracy in the hopes that will reduce the amount of terrorism wordwide, and conform with our stated foreign policy goals (observed more in the breach than in the practice)?
Most Republicans, especially those hoping to run for office next year, are saying nothing. They express concern, they condemn Obama for not doeing enough, doing it too early, or doing it too late, but they avoid taking a solid position on whether the U.S. should take military action in Libya, and what type of action, and when. They want to sit back and see how it goes. If Obama’s policies work, they will argue that that’s what they would have done, only earlier, and condemn him for waiting too long. If Obama’s policies backfire, then they will be the first to pile on to argue that he should have done something different.
But that hasn’t stopped some from trying to take positions, and then reverse them 180 degrees a few days later, and try to argue that they haven’t changed their minds at all.
So looking for consistency by Republicans here is wasted effort.

Sarah Palin has pretty much said that if she had been on the top of the ticket in 2008, she could have defeated Obama. And she is now comparing the Tea Party to the protests in Egypt and elsewhere.
When asked what important lessons she learned from the campaign, she talked about public relations and media strategies.
Apparantly she hasn’t really learned anything yet, other than how to cultivate the cult of celebrity.
