Appropriate to Colbert’s satire, at this week’s DL, one of the participants utterly lost his cool .. becoming vituperative and obscene. His anger was utterly inappropriate and if the target of this behavior had not acted like an adult (by moving away), we might well have had a bar scene involving police.

This fellow was not one of our rare wingnut visitors but a card carrying progressive. Politics and even personalities aside, may I suggest that we all leave that sort of schoolyard behavior in the threads here?

There is of course no possibility that [Republicans] block the initiatives of Obama because, just maybe, they don’t believe them to be good ideas.

That would be plausible if Republicans hadn’t already argued that most of those ideas were good ideas before Obama became President.

How else does one explain, for example, the Republican opposition to the public option in health care reform? If the private sector can do insurance better than the government can, then surely the public option represents no threat to private insurance.

The real problem is that Republicans want to press policy ideas that the American public won’t buy: privatizing Social Security; severely cutting back, if not totally eliminating, Medicare; the elimination of all forms of welfare; and tax cuts for the wealthy over and above the same tax cuts that the rest of us get.

Republicans can’t even conjure up a cogent economic argument in support of their policies. They’re reduced to some moral argument about people having some right to their hard-earned money–a moral argument that falls flat on its face when we consider the fact that, without government, there would be no such thing as hard-earned money in the first place.

As you yourself have demonstrated time and again in this forum, the conservative rhetorical guns are loaded with nothing but blanks. Unable to win the actual policy debates, they resort to cynical political tactics like the filibuster in the Senate.

So, once again, you’re totally wrong. Liberals have, indeed, considered the notion that Republicans simply don’t agree with Democrats on major policy issues. The problem is, that conclusion isn’t supported by the facts.

  64. 72

    Don Joe spews:

By the way, wingnuts, Colbert makes a rather good point. If we are to follow the dictates of Constitutional Originalism, then the word “arms” in the Second Amendment should be restricted to what it meant in the 1790′s, and, therefore, the Second Amendment really only protects the citizens’ right to keep and bear muskets and flint-lock pistols.

“By the way, how’s the psychiatric practice going.”

I’ve never claimed to be a psychiatrist. I have never claimed to have obtained a degree in psychiatry. I have never claimed to have co-founded a psychiatric clinic. In case you don’t know, there’s a difference between psychology and psychiatry, Lost. Try Google. Better yet, ask your psychiatrist.

    “Sorry, keep forgetting”

    Um, speaking of basic English.

    “You’re an engineer.”

    Sniff, yes, I am. heh-

Umm hmm. And the hate speech from Maddow, Schultz and their ilk about conservatives?
What you think of hate speech is them simply point out the facts and the hypocrisy of the right. Seems your definition of hate speech is anyone who challenges what you think. Give me a some examples of what Rachael said that you define as hate speech? Other wise you don’t have any facts to back up your claims.

    What does Rachael talk about?

Fox News’ parent company gave $1 million to the pro-GOP U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Carl Paladino admits he has no proof to back up his smear on his opponent.
Sen. Saxby Chambliss apologizes for an anti-gay threat posted from an office computer, and says a staffer has been fired
New ‘Super Pacs’ bringing millions into campaigns
Arianna Huffington to the middle class: Obama’s not your guy
GOP for big government in a small uterus
Sharron Angle tries to deny she ever said she wants to privatize the VA hospital system. I wonder what Fox News contributor Dennis Miller will say about that when he campaigns for her?
    Jim DeMint vows roadblock

I don’t see the hate speech in what Rachael is saying. I’ve watched her show. It’s calm and reasoned. She doesn’t advocate violence.
Ed gets passionate. I’ll give you that.

    By contrast

Beck: The next two years are “most dangerous time in our country’s history” and “the Republic may not survive”
Beck calls NCLR a “nasty, take America and give it to the Mexicans” group (National Council of La Raza (NCLR) – the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States )
Beck: “This is where the Republic ends or it begins again; we are at the end”
Beck: Obama was “sent away” from Indonesia because his mom didn’t want him influenced by “someone who’s not a Marxist”
Beck: After election, “our streets will not be peaceful” due to progressives “agitating”

    Republicans are sociopaths.
Sociopaths = Unconcerned about the adverse consequences for others of one’s actions. Sounds about right.

Republicans are intentionally destroying the country for a)personal gain or b) to destroy Obama. Or both.

“If we’re able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo. It will break him,” Senator Jim DeMint said.
Won’t try to keep jobs in America. Won’t try to stop Outsourcing. Republicans support off-shoring jobs. Republicans block ending offshore jobs US tax breaks
Net neutrality bill blocked by Republicans
Obama Blasts GOP for Stalling Judicial Nominations, GOP now blocking picks for lower courts
Republicans Block Repeal Of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell
Republicans block campaign finance bill again
Sen. Coburn blocks wildlife protection bills
    GOP Still Thwarting Spill Panel

I owe everyone an apology. I’ve just realized that in my frustration with basically intelligent folks who believe palpably wrong things blah, blah, blah.
So long as it is my sincere belief that America was formed on sound principles blah, blah, blah.
The Constitutions, state and federal, specify directly, blah, blah, blah. Leviticus. Samuel.

I simply don’t have the data to say one way or the other.

For some reason that I can’t quite put my finger on, I felt that that line could use just a wee bit of editing.

By the way, wingnuts, Colbert makes a rather good point. If we are to follow the dictates of Constitutional Originalism, then the word “arms” in the Second Amendment should be restricted to what it meant in the 1790’s, and, therefore, the Second Amendment really only protects the citizens’ right to keep and bear muskets and flint-lock pistols.

and slavery would still be legal, and the first amendmant would apply to the internet. and women couldnt vote. yeah lets go back.
