Has anybody else noticed how thoroughly Susan Hutchison got her ass kicked?
With the latest ballot drop, Hutchison has fallen to 40.93% of the vote. To put that in perspective, that’s less than a point and a half better than admitted-Republican David Irons garnered in 2005, a race in which a third party candidate captured 4.6% of the vote.
And an 18-point margin? That’s embarrassing, especially considering that she actually thought she was going to win this thing up until a couple days before the election.
In Arkansas, we would say that we stuffed his (or in this case, her) mouth full of ballots and sent him (or in this case, her) home.
Any way you view it, it was a horrible ass-whipping. And well-deserved.
Yesterday was an important anniversary, the 20th anniversary of the day people would say never happened. The fall of the Berlin Wall, I have been surfing Deutsche-Welle’s site for their coverage off and on the past few months, and one of the interesting things was interviewing the 2 activist/film makers that filmed the Leipzig protests and lack of a crackdown. The film got to West Germany, and DW-TV was beamed into East Germany and the anchors added the words “The Police and Army did nothing”, and the protests, already in the tens of thousands, kept growing, and in an attempt to appease them, by mid-October, the East German establishment threw out long time hardliner Honniker and replaced him with the man who ironically ordered the stand down of the police and army units in Leipzig. It set up the blunder that led to the events of November 9th. The propaganda minister makes a hastily called press conference saying that all travel restrictions would be lifted immediately and crowds gathered at the wall.

Some say the fall of the Berlin Wall on the same anniversary provides a nice set of “book ends” to the Nazi movement – the former marks the beginning of what became the Holocaust, the latter marks the end of Germany’s long nightmare of destruction which resulted from Nazi policies.
Maybe future candidates will answer questions, instead of suggesting that they think the question isn’t relevant to an election.

One thing that bothers me about the victory over Hutchinson. It wasn’t big enough.
Let’s face it – the Republicans screwed up big time while they were in power over the past several years, and it became apparant in some very big ways:
* The dismantaling of FEMA and limits on outsourcing basic government services was exposed by Katrina in 2005;
* the resurgent Iraqi insurgency in 2004-2008 demonstrated that Republicans didn’t know how to plan or run an occupation which naturally following a war;
* the explosion of the budget deficit and the national debt due to tax cuts favoring the wealthy showed they weren’t really “fiscal conservatives”;
* The huge profits under “no-bid” contracts showed they supported profiteers in both war and natural disaster;
* The near-collapse of wall street and the banking system showed they didn’t know how to do basic oversight and regulation of the country’s financial system.
So with all that in mind, the Republicans still field a candidate in the King County race who has no experience running for public office (not even for a school board seat!); who’s private sector experience is limited reading a telepromter and managing a non-profit entity funded by contributions from the wealthy; and who has a history of not being entirely truthful with her employer (and later the voters).
And this candidate still gets 40% of the vote!!!!
Given Luke Essner’s comments the other day concerning Abe Lincoln, I suspect that they could roll out his dead corpse and run it as a candidate, and it would still pull in 39% to 40% of the vote.
I think it’s past time for us to keep congratulating ourselves on the victories of 2008 and realize that if the Republicans ever do run a creditable candidate, they might actually win an election. Waiting on the other side to self-destruct might be an amusing recreational activity, but it’s hardly a strategy.
Military history is ripe with instances where a general, believing victory had been achieved, failed to pursue a “beaten” enemy, only to have the enemy rally and ultimately win the war.
Now is not the time to let up.
We need to continue to clean our own ranks of the currupt and chair-warmers who hold office. Gone are the days when we couldn’t afford to do without anyone who had once carried a district.
We need to build up strong local candidates who will be the future of the Democratic Party. By feeding a new generation into the lower-level offices, we can field experienced and qualified candidates in major elections over the next 5, 10, 20, and 30 years.
We need to agressively attack Republican attempts to negatively define us. We should never hesitate to challenge them to open debates in fair forums to show that their ideology is nothing more than empty sloganeering. It seems to have worked with Susan Hutchinson, when they got her away from reading from the teleprompter, she had to open her mouth and use her own words, and at that point she lost the election.
@16-17: It’s interesting how, in terms of cynical ploys, the WSRP is right in line with the national party, with Hutchison’s candidacy mirroring the selection of Palin by McCain, and Steele being made national party chairman.
If the party had found an actual, non-cartoonish stealth Republican candidate for King County, maybe their affiliation laundering scheme would have worked, or failed less spectacularly.

31 – One interesting set of numbers I see in the election returns for King County is the percentages of approval for I-1033 and rejection of R-71.
They both stand at about 30 percent with R-71 being slightly higher for rejection at 33 percent.
I chalk up the slight difference to the religious noise for R-71 with some religious conservative Dems being fearful of same sex marriage or “special rights”, what have you.
Suzie’s 10 percent premium on top of that 30 percent I chalk up to her name recognition and some people including a lot of women getting antsy with the Dem establishment and wanting to try something new.
The thirty percent is interesting. Here in Seattle/7th CD a solid 17 percent votes for the nutcase that runs against Jim McDermott. I’d have to check past election returns but that 30 percent might be a solid right wing block in King County – tuned into KVI/KTTH, watching Faux News and trolling blogs. 30 percent at least in off-year elections that an Eyman initiative brings out. The number is probably somewhat lower in the even years with its higher turnout and GOTV energy.
I sense people are getting some Dem fatigue and they will more than likely “try out” someone like a Rob McKenna for Governor in 2012 – who strangely enough is hated by a lot of wingnuts but they’ll come around eventually.

Communism principally collapsed due to the internal strains within it. Some factors did either speed up that collapse, others tended to delay it.
Communism in 1939 was already dying due to internal economic stresses. Stalin had tried to prop it up with draconian police-state tactics, the creation of the Gulag system as a cheap labor system as well as a method of discouraging dissent, the seizure and re-distribution of wealth from his opponants to his supporters, and territorial expansion (Finland, Baltic States) in an attempt to find new fodder to feed the ponzi scheme which was the Soviet economy. By late 1939 he had pretty much exhausted his ways to keep the Soviet economy propped up, and collapse was inevitable absent some outside grand event.
Of course, the Germans provided that event with the invasion of Poland, and his recipricol invasion of eastern Poland (agreed to in advance under secret covenants of the non-agression pact signed with the Germans months earlier). As Stalin absorbed the wealth of eastern Poland and fought the Winter War with Finland, he was then hit by the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Although the Germans expected this to be the the final blow which would cause the USSR to collapse, it actually brought the country together and provided the impetus for aid from the U.S. under the lend-lease act.
By 1945, with the USSR occupying all of eastern Europe, the USSR was free to absorbe the wealth of those countries to feed it’s continuing ponzi-scheme of an economy. This, along with a continued militarization of the economy, kept things going for about twenty years.
To keep in perspective how fragile the USSR economy was at that time, a Soviet officer who defected to the west once reported that a Soviet general had closed down a tavern in east Germany becuase his soldiers were coming back to base late (and drunk). But when it came time to issue pay to the soldiers, he was dismayed to learn that there was no pay available – the Soviet system relied upon it’s soldiers spending all of their pay in the tavern, which was then fed right back into the payroll system.
So by the 1970’s the Soviets were suffering from considerable stresses – economic, diplomatic, and political.
The signing of the Human Rights accords in Helsinki accords gave dissidents in the Soviet Union an international forum and legitimacy – the Soviets could no longer claim that it was an “internal matter” only. Jimmy Carter’s insistence on adherence to those principles, by both our friends and our enemies, created difficulties politically at home and in dealing with “friendly” despots like the Shah of Iran, but also placed incredible pressure upon the Soviets. This created the environment where even old-guard communists like Breznev felt it was politically impossible to crack down on an outspoken Polish bishop (who became Pope) and a trade-union movement. So after Breshnev died and after a short term in office by another old-guard KGB guy, Gorbachov comes to power.
But saving the economy of the Soviet Union at that time was the big jump in oil prices starting in the mid-1970’s. With few of their citizens able to afford cars, the USSR could afford to sell the produce from their oil fields at market prices to the western world, which subsidized their economy for a while. U.S. oil policy in the 1980’s – which reversed Carter’s conservation initiatives and encouraged more consumption – helped keep the USSR economy humming.
It was during this time that Reagan pursued the missle defense initiatives that the Republicans contend “bankrupted” the USSR. But there were lots of other economic and political factors at play.
By the late 1980’s there was an explosion in the availability of computer technology in west. This had military implications, to be sure. But more important from an economic standpoint was the productivity advances. By the time the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 just about every office worker had a PC (or Apple) on their desk. Fast departing were the days when office work required a “team” of an executive and a typist/secretary, computers soon merged those jobs into one. Computers also led to rapid communications, which threated the Soviet regime – even if they could catch up in computer technology and production, they could hardly let everyone have one, without making it possible for average citizens to bypass the internal controls the Soviets had to suppress dissent.
Gorbachev knew that he had to reform Soviet society to make it competitive. This meant that he had to open the Soviet society to creative dissent, and he had to push the East European nations to do likewise. But once unleashed, the creature could not be put back into the box.
So the fall of the Berlin Wall came in stages. First, Gorbachev opens up the Soviet Union to limited dissent. Then Gorbachev informs his E. European allies that the USSR won’t support them economically any longer, and that they must also open up to dissent. Then the Hungarians (in part due to an internal power struggle) open up their borders with the west. Since E. Germany has open travel between E. Germany and hungary, thousands of young people immediatly pack their backpacks for “vactions” in Hungary, followed by a quick transit through the Hungarian border to the west. Shortly before that, E. Germany and W. Germany sign an agreement whereby W. German lends E. Germany badly needed money in return for E. Germany removing automatic firing weapons on the border zones. The E. Germans see that continued attempts to keep their citizens out of the west have failed, and the German Propoganda minister mistakenly announces that the borders would be opened immediately (it was supposed to be a limited opening not to be effective until the next day).
As hundreds of thousands of E. Germans streamed through the open gates, Pres. George W. Bush had enough sense at the time to keep his mouth shut, and not proclaim victory (which might have goaded the hard-liners in the west into action).
Anyway, lots of factors played into the fall of the Berlin Wall. Reagan’s “star wars” program was just one of them.
