This is an effective, riveting ad. I definitely agree with going after the leadership. The more pressure the better. And I’d also note that I haven’t seen such effective advocacy on the leftish side of things for HCR in my memory. Lots of great, effective ads.
How the Ds deliver on HCR will make or break them in 2010.
Today’s WaPo poll shows 57% favor a strong public option, a roughly equal percentage don’t care if it’s bipartisan. They want the Ds to lead and aren’t very happy so far.
But of nearer term local concern, we’ll not know the outcome of HCR until after our November elections.
I think it’s prudent to be concerned about who turns out in the upcoming off-year election given the D cat herding and Snowe blindness.
If R-71 is rejected and 1033 passes, I think you could make a strong case that national D leadership (or lack thereof) on HCR and other issues depressed voter ballot returns. Disasterous collateral damage if it occurs.

“The priorities of the administration should have been more directly focused on job creation from the day of the inauguration forward. That’s the thing that changes America. If the government had used its power to restrain its tax collection, they would have given everybody who runs small businesses, large businesses, a chance to hire more people. Government has never increased the standard of living of one single human being in civilization’s history.”

18
Gmanspews:
I cared back in 2001, unfortunately giving tax breaks to the top 5% earners was more important. Now we are in a depression, where GWB put us and the rest of his buddies including some Democrats, but some people want to believe that there wasn’t even a recession. GWB started the bailouts, which may have been warranted, or we would be seeing much higher levels of unemployment. But Republicans want to make this more about a political football and calling names like socialism, and everything else. So do I really care about your fears, no. But only when the time is right we need to start collecting more taxes and watching spending.
Well – we will see what happens. My personal opinion is that Obama should fix the economy first and get us back on our feet before putting us in debt up to our noses!
@20 – makes no sense to fix then break it again by going into debt later after fixing the economy. How about take the debt now that may be needed, then fix forever by collecting enough taxes and curtail spending. You are starting to sound like a murdering, raping and thieving heterosexual.

Roger Rabbitspews:
@20 “Well – we will see what happens. My personal opinion is that Obama should fix the economy first and get us back on our feet before putting us in debt up to our noses!”
Uh, dummy, you know nothing about economics. Hoover tried what you’re suggesting and the result was the mother of all deflationary spirals.
26
Quincyspews:
Joe Sestak, like Chris Matthews, says “pence-uh-vain-yuh” instead of pronouncing the name of the state properly. Ugh! Does this bother anyone else as much as it bothers me? Goldy? Anyone?
27
Roger Rabbitspews:
@23 “once its economy recovers”
Those are the key words. Investors pulled trillions of dollars out of circulation. Without government intervention that would result in a severe contraction of money supply and a deflationary spiral. Deficit spending, which expands money supply, heads off deflation by putting money in circulation. When the trillions sitting on the sidelines returns to the economy the Fed will prevent overexpansion of money supply by raising interest rates. However, doing that too soon could choke off the recovery by discouraging expansionary borrowing by businesses and consumers.
28
Roger Rabbitspews:
Here’s a question for you wingnut idiots: Why is it good for businesses and consumers to borrow and increase spending in a recession, but bad for government to do it?
The answer is money doesn’t care whether it got into circulation by private or government spending.
29
Roger Rabbitspews:
@17 “If Obama does not cut spending we will have hyperinflation with Bread costing $129.00 per loaf instead of $1.29.”
You are an economics illiterate. If Obama cuts spending we will have a deflationary spiral and 25% unemployment. Don’t believe me? Read about what caused the Great Depression.
30
Mespews:
Roger – you are wrong again!! Yes I do know about economics and Yes we have to fix the economy first as Geithner states – We fix the economy by creating jobs particularly with small businesses, then we have money available for taxes – Having the Goverment create jobs won’t do that. Having the Government borrow trillions of dollars won’t do that. The other countries like China are starting to refuse to buy our debt.
If Obama has his way we are going to be so far in debt that we will become a third world country. Your $1590 dollar Social Security will be worth squat!!
So I hope you enjoyed the weekend – Please enjoy the week!!
31
YLBspews:
Yes I do know about economics
Oh let me guess – that Hayek and von Mises stuff. In the long run everything will work out, markets will rebalance, blah, blah…
A better economic thinker pointed out that in the long run – we are all dead.
32 – and there’s a legitimate role for the government to play as an economic actor in re-balancing an economy, i.e. the idea is to accomplish the re-balancing more adroitly with less pain on the part of individuals than if the economy was left to itself like Hoover tried to do.
We have a much different economy than we had in the seventies – inflation is not a threat. In fact I’ve seen deflation as a threat twice now versus zero for inflation since the early eighties.
I only see inflation becoming a problem with recovery and normal employment – this drives up demand for oil which will drive up the price of oil and the prices of all the things dependent on oil if too many dollars are chasing it. We can solve that with electrifying transport with the right kind of nuclear power – cars, trains, mass transit. Of course that will take quite a few decades of steady investment.
34
Mespews:
I don’t think anyone wants to Hooverize the recovery. Yes the government needs to be a key player to bump the businesses both small and large to increase their production so they can hire. What I have not seen is what the current stimulus bills were or are being spent on other than an occasional news article that only 10% or whatever of the last bill has been spent. And Congress is considering spending on a third stimulus bill.
So that is the frustrating part! So far as inflation – if China and other countries do not purchase our treasury bonds and our economy is still downhill then we have the problem that we will be printing money which = inflation. So a finesse control today of the recovery is extremely important – Hopefully, Geithner has that finesse!
So my point right now is we don’t need more debt if we can help it (except very specific stimulus spending). The debt we don’t need includes the very potential increases for the proposed Health Care, Cap and Trade, and the Copenhagen climate treaty until such time that we are back on our feet and can afford it.
So that is my opinion and my concerns of where I think we are and where we want to go.
35
Gmanspews:
Proof that it is not Government that is the problem, but the citizens of the United States that are the problem. Their Heterosexual tendencies can’t keep them from murdering, raping and stealing. God hates Heterosexuals.
Perhaps you should look at a little history. The greatest debt to GDP ratio in this nations previous history was at the end of WW2 – this ended the depression and led to one of the greatest sustained economic recoveries in our history. We eneded up stimulating the conomy and erasing much of that debt.
Yes – overall debt is bad. But in a recession, we need to stimulate the economy and private industry is still retracting.
Inflation! right now we still are having deflation – and if it weren’t for the speculators driving energy costs, we would be having even more deflation.
Bush managed to create debt in good economic times and to mess up the economy – plus he cut taxes for the rich (a trifecta of incompetence).
Obama has tried soooooooooooo hard to be popular. Schmoozing on Leno & Letterman…giving endless speeches etc.
Here is what all that effort has gotten him– Tuesday, October 20, 2009
The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Tuesday shows that 28% of the nation’s voters Strongly Approve of the way that Barack Obama is performing his role as President. Forty percent (40%) Strongly Disapprove giving Obama a Presidential Approval Index rating of -12. The Approval Index rating has been lower only on two days since the current President took office

CorrectNotRight – The United States was in tremendous debt in 1945 because of the spending on the War. The American people had worked during the War and did not have access to the basic goods because of the War economy and they had a lot of money saved during the War because of that. So after the War they spent their money purchasing (Capitalism) which then increased business which then caused more people to be hired and on and on. Our only current comparison to 1945 is the amount of debt we have in comparison to the economies back then and now.
Our people have very little savings and our government is in deep debt and headed even further in debt with Obama. My point I made above is we need very specific stimulus spending to get the economy back on its feet not trillions of dollars of more debt we can’t pay!!
Please read my previous post completely – Yes Bush put us in more debt and yes if other countries refuse to purchase our debt our money will be worthless and the Federal Government would basically STOP to include Medicare, Social Security, etc unless they PRINT money which will cause hypoerinflation. Oh the only possible good thing is then Obama can payoff $12 trillion(+) dollars in debt with printed paper.

Gates says Obama must pull his head outta his ass! TOO DAMN FUNNY!
The talk began during the Sarah Palin rallies on the campaign, when a Palin supporter yelled “Kill him!” about Obama while Palin did nothing, and continues to this day. Remember the Teabaggers marching on the mall, talking about “next time we bring our guns”? Remember the crazy Republicans bringing guns to meeting where Obama was speaking? There is a serious violence and extremism problem in the Republican party. If you or I were to joke about assassinating members of Congress, the FBI wouldn’t let us shrug it off as a joke. But this joker talks about shooting congressional Democrats, and it’s funny. FOX News’ Glenn Beck talks about poisoning House Speaker Pelosi and it’s funny.
The GOP is a party rather focused on jokes about murder and assassination. Is this a reflection on the poor caliber of its politicians, or the poor caliber of its voters?

Virtually every reputable economist in the country advocated massive deficit spending to address the Bush-caused financial crisis. Many advocated spending much more than was ultimately spent. You know what? The spending, at least so far, prevented the recession from becoming a depression. So, that was good. It doesn’t mean the deficit doesn’t matter; it does. But, the deficit is an evil far preferable to a depression, which is what your economic priorities would have produced.
With regard to your claim that Obama has proven that Progressivism is unsustainable, let me remind you that he has been president all of 9 months. Do you realize how silly you look claiming that anything has been proven in that short time? You need to become more careful in your claims. I remember all your posts in the first couple months of Obama’s presidency about his negative impact on the stock market. You sure proved to be prescient about that, didn’t you? He wrote about discrimination as an abstract concept, not as a flesh and blood reality for countless of his fellow citizens.”
– “I believe myself that the secretary of state, secretary of defense and — you have to make your own decisions as to what the president knows — that this war is lost and the surge is not accomplishing anything as indicated by the extreme violence in Iraq.”
– “The major oil companies haven’t even tried to build one single new refinery or significantly expand a refinery in this country in 30 years.”
– “The failure of the White House to produce relevant documents is reason enough for any senator to oppose this nomination. The administration cannot treat the Senate with such disrespect without some consequences.”
– “The president said, “Let’s send some more troops over there, and that will give the Iraqis the time to take care of themselves.” We sent other troops over there, and there are a lot of reasons the surge certainly hasn’t hurt. It’s helped. I recognize that. That said, you know, the ethnic cleansing has taken place all over Iraq.”
– “This flu is going to strike us all, me, my children, my grandchildren, and if they get it, half of them are going to die.”
– “This is a very close question for me. But I must resolve my doubts in favor of the American people whose rights would be in jeopardy if John Roberts turns out to be the wrong person for the job.”

U.S. must live within its means: Geithner
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/200.....y_geithner
“WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The United States must live within its means once its economy recovers if it is to preserve global confidence in the U.S. dollar’s status, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Friday.”
Gman spews:
@23 – I agree lets not spend more than we need, but collect taxes responsibly to pay for what we do spend.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@20 “Well – we will see what happens. My personal opinion is that Obama should fix the economy first and get us back on our feet before putting us in debt up to our noses!”
Uh, dummy, you know nothing about economics. Hoover tried what you’re suggesting and the result was the mother of all deflationary spirals.
Quincy spews:
Joe Sestak, like Chris Matthews, says “pence-uh-vain-yuh” instead of pronouncing the name of the state properly. Ugh! Does this bother anyone else as much as it bothers me? Goldy? Anyone?
Roger Rabbit spews:
@23 “once its economy recovers”
Roger Rabbit spews:
Here’s a question for you wingnut idiots: Why is it good for businesses and consumers to borrow and increase spending in a recession, but bad for government to do it?
The answer is money doesn’t care whether it got into circulation by private or government spending.
Roger Rabbit spews:
@17 “If Obama does not cut spending we will have hyperinflation with Bread costing $129.00 per loaf instead of $1.29.”
You are an economics illiterate. If Obama cuts spending we will have a deflationary spiral and 25% unemployment. Don’t believe me? Read about what caused the Great Depression.
Me spews:
YLB spews:
Oh let me guess – that Hayek and von Mises stuff. In the long run everything will work out, markets will rebalance, blah, blah…
A better economic thinker pointed out that in the long run – we are all dead.
Me spews:
YLB – and….
“I dont hate anybody” spews:
Me spews:
I don’t think anyone wants to Hooverize the recovery. Yes the government needs to be a key player to bump the businesses both small and large to increase their production so they can hire. What I have not seen is what the current stimulus bills were or are being spent on other than an occasional news article that only 10% or whatever of the last bill has been spent. And Congress is considering spending on a third stimulus bill.
Pelosi Shuns Conservatives in Economics Forum
http://www.newsmax.com/insidec.....73920.html
Gman spews:

@ 34 me:

I just watched a news story on California.
Just 150,000 pay over 1/2 the taxes….and many are fleeing.
Also, they showed the cost of a U-haul from San Francisco to Austin Texas is $3200…from Austin to SF is only $400.
Can any of you KLOWNS explain why?
It’s a simple question and a simple answer.
So Called “PROGRESSIVE” Tax Systems have unwanted consequences. You KLOWNS sit on your unemployed asses dreaming/scheming ways to take more of peoples hard earned money rather than create wealth yourselves. Your problem is folks aren’t gonna take it anymore. Jobs are evaporating BECAUSE BUSINESS OWNERS HAVE HAD IT!

Mr Cynical is correct!!

Nonfarm payroll employment continued to decline in September (-263,000), and the unemployment rate (9.8 percent) continued to trend up, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. The largest job losses were in construction,
manufacturing, retail trade, and government.
Since the start of the recession in December 2007, the number of unemployed persons has increased by 7.6 million to 15.1 million, and the unemployment rate has doubled to 9.8 percent.

If the missus and I are still in Nevada by the time the 2010 elections roll around (my wife was recently given a preliminary diagnosis that she has MS – and we’re moving back to Washington if it’s confirmed), we would look forward to seeing a strong Progressive challenger to Reid in the D primaries, a la Ned Lamont. There really isn’t a strong candidate amongst the R’s to challenge Reid as of yet, despite rumors that Mitt Romney may move to Nevada for that reason.
IMHO, Reid drank the Bushie kool-aid too much and too often (so did Pelosi and a lot of other Congressional D’s), and needs to be replaced by D’s free of that taint.

Why are you know longer talking about the stock market on a daily basis?

– “No one suggests that John Roberts was motivated by bigotry or animosity toward minorities or women, … But these memos lead one to question whether he truly appreciated the history of the civil rights struggle.
– “We want him to give us a candidate who is mainstream, not extreme.”
